What Acne Treatments Are Best For Me
That depends on many factors: your age, whether youâre male or female, how severe your acne is, and how long youâve had it, among others. There are several options available.
For mild to moderate acne, many dermatologists will start with a combination of a topical cream or gel containing either a retinoid or benzoyl peroxide along with a topical antibiotic. For more inflammatory acne, an oral antibiotic may be added. For more significant cases of acne, women may be placed on birth control pills or on the drug spironolactone, a water pill which also blocks male hormones. They may also prescribe the newly approved topical treatment clascoterone which works a lot like spironolactone, only as an ointment.
Severe cases of acne may be treated with the drug isotretinoin, which is very effective. However, side effects and blood abnormalities must be monitored monthly and requires registration with the FDA to obtain a prescription. There are also various types of light or photodynamic therapies available.
What Is Fungal Acne Vs Hormonal Acne
Fungal acne and hormonal acne are often confused with each other because both types of acne start in the hair follicles. Fungal acne occurs when excess yeast develops, whereas hormonal acne is caused by excess sebum. Fungal acne can result in whiteheads, itchiness and often becomes red, irritated and inflamed.
Practice Good Skin Hygiene
Not taking care of your skin and going to bed without washing your face can cause or worsen acne, says Engelman. In addition, you should wash your pillowcase frequently and keep your makeup brushes clean. Also, dont share your makeup brushes with friends as this can transfer their dirt and oil onto your skin.
Your makeup could also be clogging your pores and contributing to your acne. Look for makeup and skincare products that wont clog pores or have labels like non-comedogenic, non-acnegenic and oil-free.
Avoid touching your face. Dont touch, pick or pop pimples as it can make acne worse and cause scarring. If you have a large pimple or acne cyst, talk to your dermatologist and they can determine if an acne extraction is needed.

Use Sunscreen That Doesn’t Clog Pores
While SPF is a must, some sunscreens can trigger breakouts. You want to look for oil-free and non-comedogenic formulas that won’t clog pores, says Dr. Karen Hammerman, MD, from Schweiger Dermatology. Options from brands like Elta MD and Peter Thomas Roth, which are recommended by the pros, are specifically tested on acne-prone skin so you can get your dose of SPF without having to worry about clogged pores.
With some acne-treating products, though, youll need to go a level above a strong SPF. If you are using a retinol or retinol-derivative treatment, or any ingredients that make your skin more sensitive, avoid sun exposure, Dr. Dendy Engelman, MD, FACMS, FAAD, said.
What’s The Best Way To Prevent Acne

First, avoid touching your face. Touching your face can increase oiliness, irritate your skin, and encourage the growth of bacteria. Develop a hands-off policy.
Second, keep oily hair off your skin. And look for oil-free hair products. Oily hair care products can get on your face and clog pores.
Third, be gentle with your skin. Use your fingertips to wash your face with a non-abrasive cleanser. Use mild skin care products.

Does Pregnancy Acne Go Away After Birth
It would be nice if those pesky pimples went poof the moment your baby was placed into your arms. While pregnancy acne does eventually get better as your hormones return to their pre-pregnancy state, it doesnt always happen overnight.
In some cases, postpartum hormonal fluctuations paired with sleep deprivation and the stress of caring for a newborn can be yet another acne trigger.
Try to stick with the same healthy skin care habits you had during pregnancy . And ask your doctor about the acne treatments that were off-limits during your pregnancy. Even if youre breastfeeding, some topical treatments may now be okay.
Hormonal birth control may help too. If the pill had helped keep your acne in check before becoming pregnant, youll likely notice an improvement in your skin once you start taking it again.
Keep in mind, though, that the mini-pill a progestin-only birth control pill often recommended for breastfeeding moms wont help acne and can actually make it worse.
Above all, try to be patient. A fresh wave of postpartum pimples isnt fun. But eventually, your skin will settle back down.

A Diet High In Processed Food And Refined Carbs May Lead To Acne
Bisual Studio/Stocksy
As teens, we believed that greasy grub and chocolate cake caused our pimples. And that might hold true for you now that youre an adult.
The latest scientific evidence suggests that high-carbohydrate diets may predispose you to acne, Fusco says. Specifically, diets high in refined carbohydrates that are high on the glycemic index may increase the development and severity of breakouts, yet more research is needed. The glycemic index is a scale that gauges how much a certain food can affect blood sugar levels.
There may also be a link between acne and dairy, according to Harth.
Dairy products have been shown in multiple studies to increase levels of insulin-like growth factor 1 , that can trigger or worsen acne breakouts, says Harth. One of the most triggering forms of dairy is cow’s milk, especially low-fat milk, which contains a large amount of progesterone-like hormones and has a higher sugar content than full-fat milk.
Zit zapper Cut back on snacks, like chips and ice cream, and switch to whole grains, veggies, fruits, and high-protein foods.
Better skin may lie at the end of your fork, research reveals.
What Causes Hormonal Acne
Aaand were back to hormones. The hormones that cause this type of acne are fluctuations of estrogen and progesterone, which both vary widely throughout the menstrual cycle, S. Manjula Jegasothy, M.D.4, board-certified dermatologist and founder of Miami Skin Institute, tells SELF. In addition, the ratio of each of these hormones to each other can also affect womens testosterone levels, and can also be causative in hormonal acne. Cortisol, the stress hormone, can affect all of these hormones too.
It is believed that hormonal fluctuations, which can be menstrual or cyclical in women, do cause increased oil production in the pore, says Dr. Jegasothy. This is how skin-care experts believe hormonal acne starts5, although the actual cause has yet to be determined.

Am I Stuck With Acne Forever
On its own, acne does seem to go away with age. According to one study, acne becomes less common after age 44. And for some women, acne ends with menopause.
Until then, fortunately, there are treatments for adult acne. Most people find a combination of products work best. Treatment takes time — usually 4 to 12 weeks — and you need to continue it for it to work.
Youre Trying Every Acne Solution All The Things
I see this so, so often. In fact, its so, so natural. Youre hating on your skin because your acne wont go away so youre desperately seeking out what can work.
Now I love me a good Google. Its likely how we met eh Thank you Google.
But you do need a Google filter.
Because trying every spot solution blindly can actually make your acne worse. Especially if you dont know whats causing your acne.
Imagine trying to whack a piñata blindfolded.
This is like that.
But instead of someone guiding you to within a meter of the unicorn piñata youre in the next room or down the street, heck maybe even not in the same neighbourhood.
And some blemish solutions will work against each other because acne can be caused for completely opposite factors.
For example, some women get acne when their skin is oily and others get acne when their skin is dry. There are different causes at play here. Your war plan needs to be different too
Trying all the things at once not only makes it incredibly hard to identify the causes of your acne, it also can be a sole reason for acne flares.
Bottom line keeping things simple is most effective.

Why Do I Still Have Acne In My Late 20s
At its root, adult acne is caused by the same things that cause teen acne: excess skin oil and bacteria. Any changes in hormones, including those brought on by pregnancy and menstruation, can trigger excess oil. Women who smoke also seem to be more prone to acne.
Acne tends to run in families, so if a parent had adult acne, you’re at higher risk. People can get acne into their 40s and beyond.
How Is Acne Treated

Over-the-counter products work to help clear up acne for some teens. It may take time to find one that works best for you some may not help and others may irritate skin. OTC acne products come in different strengths. The most popular and effective OTC acne-fighting ingredient is benzoyl peroxide. Another ingredient, salicylic acid, can help dry up pimples.
If OTC products don’t work for you, get a doctor’s advice. Doctors can prescribe special gels or creams, pills, or a combination of both. It may feel a bit awkward to talk about your acne with someone, but your doctor is trained to help get your skin looking its best.
It’s tempting, but popping or squeezing a usually won’t get rid of the problem. Squeezing can actually push infected material and pus deeper into the skin, which can lead to more swelling and redness and even scarring, which can be permanent.
If you’re taking a prescription acne medicine, finish your entire prescription even if your skin clears up, unless your doctor says its OK to stop. If you stop too early, there’s a chance your skin could break out all over again.
Eating nutritious foods can help keep you healthy and your skin will benefit from getting enough vitamins and minerals. But you don’t need obsess about what you eat or how often you wash your face to control acne. If no OTC product works for you, talk to your doctor or a about how to manage acne.

Is That Stubborn Acne Really Acne
Stubborn acne can also be a sign of something serious going on inside your body. To see clearer skin, youll need to get that serious condition under control first.
Youll find pictures along with descriptions of such skin conditions below. If your acne resembles any of these pictures, seeing a dermatologist can help you get the right diagnosis and treatment.
Apply A Warm Compress
You can encourage the pimple to heal on its own by using a warm compress. Make one by soaking a washcloth in really warm water. Apply it to the pimple for 20 minutes or so, a couple of times a day. You might have to do this for several days.
The warm compress can help the pimple to drain on its own. Remember, though, don’t squeeze at the pimple even if it comes to a head. Let it drain naturally.

Stress Is Accompanied By Hormonal Changes That Increase Your Risk For Acne
Are you worrying about that deadline for a big project? Relationship troubles keeping you up at night? While stress alone cant spark breakouts, it can exacerbate them.
Stress can worsen acne by leading to a release of inflammatory chemicals called neuropeptides and hormonal changes, Fried says.
Even good stress, like getting ready for a big event, might trigger breakouts. Thats why a huge pimple pops up on your wedding day or before a big date.
Zit zapper Use acne products with ingredients like salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide to clear up stress-induced breakouts. To prevent future flareups, find a way to calm your nerves, whether its yoga, deep-breathing, or watching a chick flick.
Your Makeup Remover May Trigger Acne
Pore-clogging cosmetics can combine with your natural skin oil to cause breakouts called acne cosmetica.
The problem isnt only the products, but also how you remove the makeup, Frank warns.
Either women clean their skin in a cursory manner, or because theyre wearing mineral makeup they think they dont need to wash their face thoroughly, he adds.
After a long day, makeup, oil, and dirt build up. This is a triple threat that can easily clog your pores, trapping acne-causing bacteria and triggering breakouts.
Zip zapper Look for noncomedogenic products, and wash your face thoroughly and gently every night. Gently apply makeup, clean your makeup brushes every week, and dont share cosmetic products.

Whats The Truth About Chocolate And Acne
There’s no scientific proof that eating chocolate, sugar, or greasy food causes acne. However, if it seems that certain foods trigger breakouts, avoid them.
Sugary or greasy foods hinder your health in other ways, contributing to diabetes and heart disease. Reach for fresh food for better overall health.
Acne Can Affect Dry Skin Too
Acne is generally thought of as an oily skin condition, but you can also get acne with dry skin. Although the skin is dry, the mechanisms of acne are essentially the same. Pores become clogged with dead cells and sebum, turning them into a breeding ground for a bacterium called P. acnes which multiplies in the clogged pore, causing inflammation . Acne with dry skin can take longer to treat because it is particularly important to take a softly-softly approach. Harsh products and strong peels will leave it feeling stripped and sensitive, leading to redness and flaking. As with other forms of acne, patience is the key to effective treatment.

Does Acne Mean Im Not Keeping My Face Clean Enough
Not necessarily. In fact, scrubbing too hard at your face can aggravate your acne, and using alcohol-based astringents can dry out the skin. Acne is triggered by hormones, and while gentle, regular cleansing with soap and warm water can sometimes help with mild breakouts, more significant acne requires more than just good hygiene.
Washing Sheets And Pillowcases Regularly

Bacteria, dead skin cells, and dirt can collect on surfaces that the body comes into contact with regularly, including pillowcases, bedsheets, and clothing. These substances can block pores and cause pimples to form.
If pimples tend to form in a certain area of the body, regularly washing anything that comes into contact with that area can help reduce breakouts.
Changing bedsheets every week and pillowcases 23 times a week can help keep pimples from forming or worsening.

So What Is Nodulocystic Acne Anyway
Cysts and nodules are large, deep, and painful bumps, filled initially with blood, then with pus, Dendy Engelman, M.D., a board-certified dermatologic surgeon at Medical Dermatology and Cosmetic Surgery in New York City, tells SELF. Delightful, right? You might not even be able to pop it should you want to. These bumps can linger under the surface for weeks or even months and can eventually harden, Dr. Engelman says.
To break it down further, this form of acne is composed of two parts. Technically, nodular refers to bumps over one centimeter in diameter, and cystic refers to a lesion thats under the skin and lined by a hair follicle, Hooman Khorasani, M.D., chief of dermatologic and cosmetic surgery at Mount Sinai Health System, tells SELF.
These are different than typical acne, which are white or black comedones, Dr. Khorasani says. They are larger, deeper bumps under the skin.
Cysts and nodules can occur on their own or together, but they are caused by different circumstances. A nodule is when a pore ruptures under the skin, resulting in a large, raised bump, Dr. Engelman says. On the other hand, a cyst happens when a pore is clogged with oil, dead skin cells, or bacteria. The pore ruptures under the skin, causing the inflammation to spill out into the surrounding tissue, she explains. The difference here is that the body forms a cyst around it to stop the inflammation from spreading. Plus that makes them super painful.
