Body Acne Can Be Treated Too
The face isn’t the only place that acne can pop up. It also commonly appears on the following areas:
Many of the same medications that are used on your face can also be used for other body parts. Benzoyl peroxide soaps and body washes are often used to treat body breakouts.
Your healthcare provider might also prescribe other medications, like oral antibiotics or even isotretinoin. This will depend on how serious your breakouts are.
Tell Somebody If Acne Has You Down

Starting treatment and seeing some good results can really help you feel better. So can focusing on things other than your skin. While youre waiting for results, distract yourself with sports, music, art, or any other interests you have.
There will likely be times when you just cant seem to not think about your acne. If acne is controlling more of your life than you want it to, let someone know. Tell your parents, a favorite teacher, clergy person, your healthcare provider, or anyone you trust.
You can get through it, you can get over it, and you can feel good about your skin and yourself again.

Early treatment for severe acne may help prevent scarring. If your teen uses treatments for mild acne for 3 months and their acne doesnt improve, take them to see your family doctor. You should also take them to the doctor if they feel down or depressed.

- acne on the back or chest

How Can I Treat Acne Scars
A persons acne needs to be under control before scars can be treated, but typically acne scars take two forms, says Dr. Martinez:
- Scars with a gradual dip or depression, which are sometimes called rolling scars
- Scars that are deep and narrow
Most serious scarring is caused by the more severe forms of acne, with nodules or cystic acne more likely to leave permanent scars than other types of acne.
Most of the time though, red or brown acne marks that are left behind after pimples clear up will fade with no need for treatment, though they can sometimes take up to 12 months to go away.
If a teen is upset about acne scars, contact a dermatologist for advice about possible solutions. Treatments depend on how severe the scars are. In some cases, a doctor or dermatologist may suggest a chemical peel or microdermabrasion to help improve the appearance of scars. These treatments can be done in a doctors office.
For serious scarring from previous bouts with acne, several types of treatment can help:
For rolling scars, dermatologists sometimes inject material under the scar to raise it to the level of normal skin. Finally, in some cases, a dermatologist may recommend surgery to remove deeply indented scars.

Be Careful To Not Shave Pimples
Shaving is another matter. If you have pimples in the beard area, do your best to shave carefully. The more you irritate your skin, the redder and more inflamed it’s going to look.
- Shave around pimples, if possible.
- Avoid shaving the tops off of your pimples.
- Shave less often until the inflammation goes down.
What Are The Symptoms Of Acne
While the symptoms of acne vary in severity, you’ll notice these signs on areas of your body with the most oil glands :
- Clogged pores
The least severe type of acne lesion is the whitehead or blackhead. This type is also the most easily treated. With more extensive acne, you may need prescription medications to ease inflammation, bacterial infection, redness, and pus.

What Can I Do About Acne
To help prevent the oil buildup that can contribute to acne, wash your face once or twice a day with a mild soap and warm water. Don’t scrub your face hard with a washcloth acne can’t be scrubbed away, and scrubbing may actually make it worse by irritating the skin and pores. Try cleansing your face as gently as you can.
If you wear makeup or sunscreen, make sure it’s labeled “noncomedogenic” or “nonacnegenic.” This means it won’t clog your pores and contribute to acne. And when you’re washing your face, be sure you take the time to remove all of your makeup so it doesn’t clog your pores.
Acne isn’t really helped by the sun. Although a tan can temporarily make acne look less severe, it won’t help it go away permanently and some people find that the oils their skin produces after being in the sun make their pimples worse.
If you use hair sprays or gels, try to keep them away from your face, as they also can clog pores. If you have long hair that touches your face, be sure to wash it often enough to keep oil away. And if you have an after-school job that puts you in contact with oil like in a fast-food restaurant or gas station, for example be sure to wash your face well when you get home. It also can help to wash your face after you’ve been exercising.
Some people do find that they notice their breakouts get more severe when they eat too much of a certain food. If you’re one of them, it’s worth trying to cut back on that food to see what happens.
Dont Put Weird Stuff On Your Face
Just like there are many myths about what causes acne, there are also a lot of misconceptions about what can be used to treat it. The internet is crawling with weird home remedies sworn to banish pimples, including:
These remedies simply arent effective. Actual acne medications are going to give you much better results.

Dandruff Shampoo Might Be The Cure
A condition that is often confused with traditional acne is fungal acne.
This is caused by a yeast called Malassezia that thrives in hot climates.
This yeast gets trapped in hair follicles and causes inflammatory bumps to appear that resemble traditional acne.
This is the same yeast that can cause dandruff, or seborrheic dermatitis.
Seborrheic dermatitis commonly affects the eyebrow, scalp, sides of nose and beard areas, similar to acne.
A great treatment option for fungal acne is to use a dandruff shampoo that contains the following ingredients: ketoconazole, sulfur, zinc pyrithione or selenium sulfide.
These shampoos can be used as a face wash to treat fungal acne. It is important to leave them on for 2-3 minutes after cleansing so that the medication can penetrate your skin and kill the yeast.
Do Teenage Acne Scars Go Away
One big reason why you shouldnt pick at your skin is you can easily get acne scars. Teenage cystic acne can also leave scars, as these types of pimples are usually quite deep and inflamed.
Acne scars usually dont go away on their own. If you have severe acne, or if your acne is negatively impacting your self-esteem, it can be helpful to see a dermatologist. A dermatologist may prescribe a topical medication like a retinoid, or an oral medication such as Accutane. They can also give you expert advice on what types of daily products to use, and how to care for your skin.
Having acne when youre a teenager is extremely normal, so dont feel alone if you have a couple pimples that are giving you grief. If you want to see a dermatologist, you can have an appointment via your laptop, tablet, or smartphone.

Why Do Teenage Boys Get Acne
During puberty, a boy’s skin on his face, neck, back and chest will start to overproduce a type of oil called sebum. Sebum is usually a good substance-it keeps the skin waterproof and fends off dangerous bacteria. But too much is definitely a bad thing. In addition to excess oil, the pubescent skin also sloughs off skin cells at a higher rate, and these skin cells-and the extra oils-are exiting the body by traveling via hair follicles and pores to the surface of the skin. As these pores and follicles get clogged up with this extra matter, there is a backup as the skin and oil behind the blockage begins building up with nowhere to escape. A bacteria known as Propionibacterium acnes becomes involved and causes the blockage to become inflamed. This pushes it outward, creating the visual sensation known as a “zit.”
There are many forms of acne, but the most usual is acne vulgaris. Acne vulgaris is the reason for your garden-variety pimples, blackheads, whiteheads and the cyst-looking large bumps. There is usually no escaping acne vulgaris-it afflicts almost everyone at some point, and boys have it worse than girls during puberty.
If you are a pubescent boy who has acne, this is your best bet: Wash your face gently twice a day, shower right after working up a sweat and don not pick at your face. Do not go crazy trying to clean your face, either, because too much scrubbing and agitating the skin can make things worse.

Can I Prevent Acne
There’s no sure way to prevent acne. But these tips might help reduce the number and severity of your breakouts:
- Washing your skin is the most important thing you can do. It helps remove excess surface oils and dead skin cells that can clog your pores. But washing too much can cause damage by making your skin too dry or irritating acne thats already there.
- Remember to wash after exercising because sweat can clog your pores and make your acne worse. If you work around greasy food or oil, if you’ve been sweating from heat or from working hard, wash your face and other acne-prone areas as soon as possible.
- If you use skin products, such as lotions or makeup, look for ones that are non-comedogenic or non-acnegenic, which means that they don’t clog pores.
- If you use hair spray or styling gel, try to keep them away from your face as much as possible. Many hair products contain oils that can make acne worse. Try to use water-based products.
- If you get acne on areas such as your chest or back, avoid wearing tight clothes, which can rub and cause irritation.
Outside Of Your Control
Unfortunately, acne is mainly caused by processes that happen inside our bodies and that are outside our control so it isnt usually possible to stop spots completely. Over the counter products can help when spots appear but if these dont work or your acne is severe you should see a consultant dermatologist they will be able to recommend alternative treatments, prescribe certain medicines and help guide you through your acne treatment.
Tips For Managing Teen Acne
Acne is a common condition faced by many teenagers. Although most teens will have acne at some point, your teen still may be embarrassed by it. As a parent or guardian, it is important to take your teen’s feelings about acne seriously. Acne can cause low self-esteem and lead to distress in teens. Helping your teen with acne management can make this time less stressful and decrease the long-term effects of acne.
You and your teen can follow these 13 tips to help manage or eliminate acne:
1. Have your teen use over-the-counter acne products, and wash problem areas with a gentle cleanser twice daily.
Look for products that contain topical benzoyl peroxide as the main active ingredient. Apply cleanser with fingertips, and rinse skin with lukewarm water.
2. After washing the skin, treat with a topical product containing adapelene.
Adapelene is helpful in unclogging pores and preventing new breakouts. A pea-sized amount should be applied to the entire face, avoiding easily irritated areas, such as the eyes and mouth. It also can be applied to the chest and back, if needed.
3. Avoid facial scrubs, astringents and facial cleanser masks, as well as excessive scrubbing and washing.
This can irritate the skin and worsen acne.
4. Remind your teen to use acne treatment, but only remind them occasionally.
A small study shows that fewer reminders from parents are more effective than reminding your child each day, which can be viewed as nagging.
5. Do not touch or pick at problem areas.
What Can Be Done About Acne
Shop with Sensitivity
If the causes of acne seem numerous, the number of products designed to treat it seem downright dizzying. Supermarkets and drug stores carry a huge selection of acne products, but most are very heavily labeled ACNE. Unless your teen has specifically asked you to buy skincare products to treat acne, tread lightly. Bringing heavily labeled products home uninvited can be too abrupt of a way to enter a conversation on acne. Instead, consider teaching your teen about your cleansing routine, and suggest setting a budget where the two of you can go shopping for products together. Either online, or in the store. CLn Acne Cleanser is gentle, non-drying, and unlike many teen acne products, it wont bleach clothes or towels. Also, it also looks like an elegant cosmetic product, which many teens appreciate.
Establish a Routine
Perhaps before the teen years, kids didnt wash their face more than once a day. Teens bodies produce more oil than kids and need more cleansing. Gentlevsharsh cleansing is best, and frequency is key. So help establish good habits in tweens and teens by gently reminding that faces should be washed morning, night and after sweating.
Dont Forget to Moisturize
Many teens can benefit from a good, lightweight moisturizer to soothe and prep the skin for cosmetics. CLn Facial Moisturizer absorbs quickly and does not clog pores. Any moisturizer used by teens should read non-comedogenic on the label.
