According to past research, acne is one of the most common dermatological problems among Black people. It can appear on any part of the body, but often appears near the hairline in Black women. Acne in this area is likely the result of hair-care products clogging pores near the hairline.

More than two-thirds of Black women with acne also develop post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and scarring. But despite the prevalence of acne among this group, Black individuals are less likely than their white counterparts to see a dermatologist for treatment, per research published in May 2018 in the Journal of Dermatological Treatment. Researchers said more studies are needed to understand the cause of this disparity.

What’s The Best Way To Treat Acne

Medicated creams with benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, or alpha-hydroxy acid are the first treatments to try. You can get them over the counter or by prescription. Retinoids — vitamin A-based creams — also work to unclog hair follicles.

Your doctor can prescribe stronger creams, or other medications that help, such as antibiotics, oral retinoids, androgen blockers, and low-dose birth control pills.

Why Do I Have Acne

Acne is most commonly linked to the changes in hormone levels during puberty, but can start at any age.

Certain hormones cause the grease-producing glands next to hair follicles in the skin to produce larger amounts of oil .

This abnormal sebum changes the activity of a usually harmless skin bacterium called P. acnes, which becomes more aggressive and causes inflammation and pus.

The hormones also thicken the inner lining of the hair follicle, causing blockage of the pores. Cleaning the skin does not help to remove this blockage.

The Sebaceous Glands And Pimples

The sebaceous glands are tiny skin glands that secrete sebum, a waxy or oily substance that lubricates the skin and hair.

Sebaceous glands are found inside the pores of our skin, all over the body, except the palms of the hands and soles of the feet. There are more sebaceous glands on the face and scalp than elsewhere.

As the glands produce sebum inside the pores, new skin cells are constantly growing, and the outer layers of skin are being shed.

Sometimes, dead skin cells are not shed. They remain in the pores and get stuck together by the sticky sebum, causing a blockage in the pore.

Pore blockage is more likely to occur during puberty, as the sebaceous glands produce more sebum at this time.

The goal of any soap or wash you use is to clean the skin and remove impurities and dirt from the day. Remember to thoroughly cleanse your skin for one minute a simple splash-and-go isnt enough time to clean those pores.

And its best to avoid using an entire line or multiple anti-acne products at once as that can dry out your skin. Consider incorporating products that work for you at various points in your routine. Some people find toners and serums to be especially helpful in clearing acne, while others find spot treatments to be their best bet.

Why Do Adults Get Acne

If youre older than age 25 and have acne, this is called adult acne or post-adolescent acne, writes Harvard Health Publishing. The same things that cause teen acne can also cause acne in adults: too much oil, clogged pores, bacteria, and inflammation, as well as medications, hair and skin care products, and cosmetics.

Womens menstrual cycles can contribute to acne. Women may notice that acne appears or flares up right before their period starts. This acne differs from adolescent acne in that it usually appears as papules, mostly on the lower third of the face, jawline, and neck. How Is Acne Treated

Your healthcare provider may suggest some non-prescription medications for your condition. Depending on the conditions severity, your age, the type of acne you have and how effective the over-the-counter remedies have been, you may need stronger prescription medications.

The use of certain contraceptives can sometimes help a womans acne go away. The Food and Drug Administration has approved three types of birth control pills for treating acne. All four contain a combination of estrogen and progesterone .

Various medications and therapies have proven to be effective. They target the underlying factors that contribute to acne. You might require at least one or multiple, depending on the severity of your condition.

Try to resist the temptation to pick or squeeze the spots, as this can lead to permanent scarring.

Treatments can take up to 3 months to work, so do not expect results overnight. Once they do start to work, the results are usually good.

Like most things in life, acne is not always completely in ones control. There are, however, some key tips we offer to help prevent breakouts:

  • Never go to bed with makeup on.
  • Check labels: when purchasing cosmetic and skincare products, always look for the terms “non-comedogenic,” “oil-free,” or “wont clog pores.”
  • Avoid facial oils and hair products that contain oil.
  • Some acne spots are not actually acne but are post-inflammatory pigment changes from previous acne lesions or from picking at acne or pimples. Wear sunscreen with SPF 30+ daily, rain or shine, to prevent darkening of these spots.

There is some evidence that specific dietary changes may help reduce the risk of acne. For example, one meta-analysis of 14 observational studies that included nearly 80,000 children, adolescents, and young adults showed a link between dairy products and increased risk of acne. And some studies have linked high-glycemic-index foods and acne.

With that said, its important to be wary of misinformation about nutrition and skin. As physicians, we seek scientifically sound and data-driven information the evidence on the relationship between diet and acne is just starting to bloom. In the future, the effect of diet on acne may be better understood.

Why Do Some People Get Acne & Some Dont

Many factors can contribute to acne formation and this can indeed include hormones, lifestyle choices, hygiene, diet, etc.

However, this is a difficult question to answer without the background to work with. And by this, I mean that not everyone experiences the same circumstances that might be a potential acne trigger and it varies drastically from person to person.

As an esthetician, I get this question more regularly than youd think, however, I always want to get informed on the clients back story before I can recommend adequate treatment.

For example, do they live their daily lives in a stressful environment, how often do they wash their face, what are the products they are using, what does their diet consist of, etc.

Hormones, for example, can indeed play a role in triggering acne. Androgens, in particular, increase during puberty and this contributes to the oil glands becoming larger and making more sebum.

So this explains why most people get more acne during puberty.

Additionally, the hormone thats known as cortisol or the stress hormone is known to also rev up the activity of sebaceous glands in the skin, leading to higher than normal levels of oil production.

Excessively greasy or sugary foods can also have a side effect on the oil glands, increasing oil production.
