Why Do Babies Have Acne

Keep Your Babys Face Clean

How can I help my baby’s acne?

Wash your babys face daily with warm water. Bath time is a great time to do this. You dont even need to use anything but water, but if you want to, look for a mild soap or soap-free cleanser. Dont hesitate to ask the pediatrician for recommendations.

Fragrance-free products are least likely to irritate your babys skin.

What Is Baby Acne

Baby acne is a series of reddish bumps and pustules that usually appear on your babys forehead, cheeks, and nose. It can also spread to your baby’s scalp, chest, neck, and back, though its less common. Baby acne is not a serious condition.

About 30% of babies have baby acne. Its not the same acne that a teenager or adult would have. Baby acne doesnt usually cause scars if its left alone and the affected area is kept clean. Having acne as a baby doesnt necessarily mean your child will develop it in the future.

Doctors arent sure exactly what causes baby acne. Some theories say it comes from the mothers hormones during birth or a type of yeast that lives on your babys skin.

Neonatal acne vs. infantile acne. There are two different kinds of acne: neonatal acne and infantile acne.

Neonatal acne. Baby acne is also known as neonatal acne. Neonatal acne can appear on babies from two weeks of age up until 6 weeks old. This type of acne usually goes away on its own within three to four months.

Infantile acne. Infantile acne can happen when your baby is 3 months to 6 months old. If your baby develops acne after 6 weeks of age, its helpful to take them to a dermatologist to help treat it. Infantile acne can last longer than neonatal acne.

Treatment For Baby Acne

Even though baby acne can look similar to adult acne, you must treat it differently. Keep in mind that infant skin is sensitive, and handling it incorrectly could result in scarring.

Additionally, never try to pop any pimples or squeeze any blackheads. Yes, I know it may be tempting. But, not only can you increase the chance of infection.

So, to all of you pimple-popping mommas, here are a few ways to treat your babys acne.

Pat Your Baby Dry After A Bath

Towels can be notoriously coarse…especially on your babys tender skin. And if they suffer from baby acne, the feeling can be even worse.

To keep bath towels from wreaking havoc on your babys acne, always pat their skin dry instead of rubbing. Rubbing with a rough cloth like a towel or washcloth can remove skin cells , which, in most cases, is a good thing. But for your babys already-irritated skin, it can cause more problems.

Similarly, the heat created by rubbing your little one dry can contribute to the discomfort caused by baby acne. Always gently pat your babys skin dry.

When To See The Pediatrician About Baby Acne

Why Does My Baby Have Acne?

The doctor will look at your baby and make sure the skin condition is in fact acne. Its possible to mistake acne with another skin condition, so your doctor will want to rule out other possibilities like rashes, infection, or skin irritation.

Baby Acne: Causes Prevention And The Best Treatment Methods

Even though baby acne is one of the most common skin conditions that develop in newborns and infants, watching these little bumps flare up can be a stressful time for a parent. To help alleviate that stress, the experts at Mustela have put together 11 tips for getting rid of baby acne.

Before we get to the top 11 baby acne treatment tips, lets touch on four important questions:

  • What is baby acne?
  • What does baby acne look like?
  • How can I tell baby acne apart from other skin conditions?
  • What causes baby acne?

Is It An Allergic Reaction

Allergic reactions can cause raised, swollen bumps, or hives, to appear on the skin.People do not tend to confuse hives with acne. This is because hives is very uncommon under 6 weeks old, does not look like acne, and is usually not confined to the face, neck, and upper chest back as baby acne is.

Babiesâ skin is thinner than adultsâ skin and has fewer oil glands. This makes their skin more vulnerable to injury and irritation.

Adult acne remedies can irritate babiesâ sensitive skin. Caregivers should avoid using OTC remedies unless a dermatologist or pediatrician suggests otherwise.

To treat baby acne at home, keep the skin clean but do not overmoisturize it. A gentle cleanser for sensitive skin can help. Avoid touching or picking at acne, which can make it worse and cause infections.

For most young babies, the fewer things that touch their skin, the better. However, if the baby has dry skin and a face moisturizer may work, it is best to use one that manufacturers have specifically designed for use on baby skin.

Though there is no clinical evidence supporting this claim, some caregivers claim that a breast milk remedy can work. Breast milk is rich in antibodies, and some believe that applying it to a babyâs acne can help clear it up more quickly.

Baby acne typically goes away on its own within a few weeks. If it does not go away, or if it gets worse, a person may wish to consider seeing a doctor.

Try The Breast Milk Remedy

There is no research to back up these claims, but many moms swear by the power of breast milk to clear up babys acne. Breast milk has high antimicrobial properties that can help keep your baby healthy. Those same antimicrobial properties can, theoretically, do just as much good when applied topically as they do when ingested.

Using a finger, just dab a small amount of breast milk on your babys inflamed skin several times a day. A great time to try this is during feeding periods when your baby is happy and content.

Newborn Acne Is Generally Nothing To Worry About

About 20% of newborns have a type of acne called neonatal acne. Youll usually see it at about 2 weeks of age. However, it can develop any time before 6 weeks of age. Sometimes, a baby is born with acne.

If your newborn has acne, youll usually see breakouts on your babys cheeks and nose. Acne can also appear on a babys forehead, chin, scalp, neck, back, or chest.

Neonatal acne is generally nothing to worry about. It rarely causes a scar and tends to go away on its own in a few weeks to months.

An Indicator Of Future Skin Problems

Its almost impossible to tell what issues we must deal with in the future. But there are some clues when we are babies.

If your baby has neonatal acne, theres no need to worry. Although your child may still develop acne as they grow up, it isnt due to your pregnancy hormones. There is no connection between baby acne and the acne that teens and adults suffer from.

Infantile acne, on the other hand, can sometimes indicate that acne is also in the cards in the future. Some studies revealed this type could lead to more severe cases of breakouts during adolescent years .

Tips To Prevent Baby Acne Or Not Make It Worse

  • Be gentle with the babys skin, especially when taking a bath. If your baby is already experiencing acne, avoid scrubbing the affected area to avoid causing irritation, and to help it heal faster.
  • Use lukewarm water when washing your babys skin.
  • As much as possible, use a mild soap, fragrance-free or a soap-free cleanser when washing your babys skin. It may be best to ask your doctor for product recommendations to know whats best for your babys skin type.
  • Avoid using adult acne products such as those with erythromycin or retinoids on your babys skin as they may be too strong and may cause further skin issues.
  • Avoid using oily or greasy products that may aggravate baby acne. Its also best to skip the lotion and heavy creams.
  • Most of all, please do not squeeze baby acne as this many only irritate your babys skin, cause scarring and/or just make it worse.

When To Seek Medical Advice

If your baby has a case of neonatal acne happening before six weeks, there shouldnt be a need to worry. You can follow some of the treatments above and it will no doubt run its course. But of course, always consult your pediatrician if youre in doubt.

Specialists recommend you seek medical advice if your baby develops acne after six weeks of age. This is generally to implement the right treatment to prevent scarring. Doctors will usually treat it with topical creams and oral medicines .

However, sometimes, infantile acne could be an indicator of a health issue in your baby. Your doctor might carry out blood tests or an X-ray to eliminate other conditions.

Dont Rub Your Babys Skin With Rough Fabric

Why Does My Baby Have Acne?

Rough fabrics can make your babys acne worse by further irritating the already-sensitive skin. Thats why its so important to keep rough fabrics away from your newborn. Dress your baby in super-soft clothing, and keep wool and other coarse fibers away from their skin.

Similarly, dont bathe your baby with a washcloth. The roughness of the cloth can rip open the bumps and lead to infection. Instead, wash your little one with your hands, but be sure to remove any jewelry that may poke or prick.

The True Cause Of Baby Acne

Babies get acne due to the maternal hormone that passes from placenta to child during pregnancy. This maternal hormone remains with the baby for the first six months of life. As the hormone targets and stimulates the oil glands, this may lead to breakouts on the babys skinincluding the scalp, which is known as cradle cap. Even after the hormone is metabolized, some babies oil glands may stay enlarged, allowing oil to clog pores, known as infantile acne, Dr. Joyce Teng, Everedens Chief Scientific Officer, and Director of Pediatric Dermatology at Stanford Medical School, adds. Infantile acne can last longer than baby acneuntil two years of age, and the more serious instances can lead to scarring.
