Why Am I Getting Chin Acne

Do Any Foods Cause Chin Acne

Here’s what your pimples are trying to tell you | Explains Dermatologist Dr. Shikha Shah

Newsflash, the link between diet and acne is weak.

‘For a small select group, reducing sugar or dairy may be of benefit but this is unlikely to help everyone. Food restriction to try and control acne can potentially lead to disordered eating patterns. ,’ says Dr Mahto.

‘For a small group of people that will be sensitive to dairy, and for them, it might be worthwhile to limit the amount of cow’s milk, cheese and yoghurt that they have,’ says Dr Mahto.

‘But youll have to make sure that you have other good sources of calcium and vitamin D.’

Causes And Prevention Of Chin Acne

  • Hormones: Higher levels of testosterone trigger more oil production, which can clog pores and lead to breakouts.
  • Lack of exfoliation: Excess oils, impurities, and clogged pores can lead to breakouts, particularly if the skin isnt being exfoliated well. Regular exfoliation can help minimize the appearance of blackheads.
  • Bacteria: With pustules, there is more of an inflammatory component that comes from the presence of bacteria trapped within the skin.

Your Laundry Detergent Is Irritating Your Skin

Per Dr. Downie, some of the chemicals in certain laundry detergents can be too harsh for your skin. And once you slip on your clothes or use your bath towels, your complexion might react to the residue thats left on the fabric, resulting in breakouts on your face, back, butt, chest, etc. If you recently switched to a new detergent because it was on sale and noticed a few breakouts ever since, that might be your problem.

The zit fix:

Choose a detergent thats fragrance-free, dye-free, and dermatologist-tested for sensitive skin, like Seventh Generation Concentrated Free & Clear Unscented Laundry Detergent.

Lynde advises his patients to get lots of sleep and drink lots of water.

All the healthy things in life are important for any skin regimen, he said.

Stay away from things that irritate the skin, and dont pick at the skin.

When using products on your skin, be gentle. Kole recommends using your fingertips to apply a gentle, non-abrasive cleanser.

During application, avoid using anything that can irritate the skin, like a washcloth.

Scrubbing your skin can make acne worse, she said. Avoid the temptation to scrub.

However, its important to note that not all acne is caused by everyday habits. Both Lynde and Kole recommend seeing a dermatologist if problems persist.

Why You Get Acne On The Forehead

Why Am I Getting Cystic Acne On My Neck

If youve ever read a beauty blog or magazine, you know about the T-zone. Dr. Kassouf says the T-shaped area across your forehead and down the nose is a prime locale for classic blackheads and whiteheads. Thats because this area tends to have more oil glands than other parts of the face.

To treat T-zone acne, try:

  • Salicylic acid: Available in lots of over-the-counter products, this ingredient helps break up dead skin cells and clear out pores, Dr. Kassouf says.
  • Benzoyl peroxide: Another easy-to-find ingredient in OTC acne creams, this also helps clear plugged pores. But it can interact with some other topical acne treatments, so dont mix and match without talking to a doctor.
  • Retinoids: Retinoids are effective acne fighters, Dr. Kassouf says. But they tend to work better as long-term maintenance than short-term spot treatments. Topical retinoid creams and lotions are available in prescription and OTC strength.
  • Different hair products: Pimples along your hairline might be caused by your mousse or your favorite dry shampoo. Hair products tend to be very waxy and can build up at the hairline and cause flare-ups, Dr. Kassouf says. If you suspect your favorite hair product is to blame, focus it on the ends of your tresses and steer clear of your scalp.

Why You Get Acne On The Chin And Jawline

The jawline and chin are sensitive to hormones, Dr. Kassouf says. Teen boys often get acne along the jawline during growth spurts. Girls and women may see their chins erupt as hormones ebb and flow during their menstrual cycles. Compared to typical T-zone pimples, acne here is likely to be deeper, bigger and more inflamed, she says.

To treat chin and jawline acne, try:

  • Hormones: For women, Dr. Kassouf says birth control pills can help keep this acne under control. But some types of hormonal birth control can make breakouts worse, so talk to your doctor to find one that helps rather than hurts.
  • Sulfur: Topical treatments containing sulfur can help reduce the inflammation of deep acne. Theyre available in OTC and prescription varieties.
  • Retinoids: This superstar acne fighter can also help ward off hormonal acne.

Do You Have To Use The Acne Light Mask Everyday

The benefits of LED lights are cumulative, says Darden. So if youre going to spend all that money on the product, you need to be diligent. Everyone has their own routine, but I recommend five times per week. Sure, youll see some results when using it less oftenbut they wont be nearly as effective.

Don’t Miss: How To Prevent Acne From Makeup

You Are Using The Wrong Type Of Makeup

Your makeup is just as important to your skins health as your cleansing regime. Studies in Brazil have shown that 45% of women had skin problems connected to their makeup while 14% had active acne breakouts attributable to their cosmetics. The problem has even been given its own name, acne cosmetic. Once you get a case of cosmetic acne it can persist for years, this is because sufferers tend to try to use makeup to cover the breakout which of course only causes it to become worse leading to a vicious cycle of makeup induced acne.

What can you do? The obvious answer is to avoid wearing makeup altogether but for many people , going bare faced is just not an option, whether for personal reasons or due to societal pressure. If you absolutely have to wear makeup try to stay away from heavy cream based products. Try to avoid foundations or, if you have to wear them, opt for powder formulations where possible. Look at the labels and actively choose formulations which are fragrance free and stated to be non-comodogenic. This means they have fewer additives and will not block pores.

You Are Skimping On Your Sleep

Why popping your pimples is bad for you

If you are in your 30s you are busy! You will be juggling the demands of your job, your relationship , your family . There are just not enough hours in the day and when you do get to bed it is all too easy to stay up late watching tv or browsing rubbish on your cell because you want to relax and have some time to yourself before you sleep. Skimping on sleep may seem to be the best solution to your busy life but it is a terrible idea. Sleep is the time during which your body regenerates and repairs itself. It also allows you to dream which is your minds way of sorting through the stresses of the day and refreshing itself ready for the next one.

Too little sleep can cause you to become stressed which is linked to breakouts and acne . Lack of sleep can also contribute to insulin resistance which can prevent your body from dealing with sugars properly, excess sugar is also thought to be a potential cause for adult acne .

So what can you do? Try to establish a robust sleep routine, aim to go to bed at the same time every night and ban phones, tablets and other bluelight sources from the bedroom. You should aim to get between 7 and 9 hours of sleep a night. You will know that you are getting enough when you are able to wake up in the morning without feeling groggy. A few weeks of good sleep should help to reduce your breakouts.

The Studies: The Cheeks Are Most Affected Followed By The Chin And Then The Jaw

The following four studies show that adult female acne is common in the U-zone, particularly on the cheeks. According to the studies, this is seen worldwide, especially in people with darker skin types.

The first study shows us that the cheeks are affected most often, followed by the chin, and then the jaw.

A 2012 study published in the Indian Journal of Dermatology, Venereology and Leprology found that adult female acne affects the cheeks most often, followed by the chin, and then the jaw. The study included women and men over the age of 25 who had acne. The average age of women and men in this study was 30.5 years. Among the 230 women included in the study, 83% reported acne on the cheeks 71% reported acne on the chin, and 61% reported acne on the mandible . As indicated from these numbers, many women reported having acne in more than one area of the face. Percentages for men were lower, especially for the chin and jaw.3

The second and third study reiterate that the cheeks are most prone to adult female acne, followed by the chin.

A 2014 study published in the Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology also showed that women were more likely to have acne on the cheeks than the chin. This study compared Caucasian and non-Caucasian women. Among Caucasian women, 28% were found to have acne on the chin, and 31% were found to have acne on the cheeks. For non-Caucasian women, only 12% had acne on the chin, while 58% had acne on the cheeks.4

You’re Drying Out Your Skin While Sunbathing

By now, you know that baking in the sun and in tanning beds causes skin cancer, but if that still hasnt stopped you from hitting the beach without sunscreen, maybe this will: Contrary to popular belief, the sun isnt healing your acne, its actually making it worse. On top of all the other damage, the sun dries out your skin and triggers excess oil production, which, hi, is one of the acne causes.

The zit fix:

For starters, stop going to tanning beds. Period. And if you are in the sun, make sure to slather on a titanium dioxide- or zinc-based sunscreen, and wear a hat to shield your face from harsh rays.

Your Hair Products Are Clogging Your Pores

Those same pore-clogging moisturizing agents and sulfates that sneak their way into your skincare products can also be found in your shampoo, conditioner, and hairstyling formulas. And similar to how they can cause breakouts on your face, the ingredients can seep into the pores on your body and clog them, resulting in chest acne, back acne, and even pimples along your hairline or scalp acne, says Wright.

The zit fix:

First and foremost, switch to a sulfate-free shampoo already. Once you’ve moved on to the conditioning step, clip your hair up and off your back while you let the formula sit. When you rinse, tilt your head over and to the side to keep the potentially pore-clogging and acne-causing residue off your face, chest, and back.

Keep Your Cell Phone Clean

Why Am I Getting Acne On My Chin

Another small simple change that can make a world of a difference. Like touching your face, cell phones are not the cause of acne, but they can potentially make acne worse due to the presence of bacteria on your mobile device, experts say.

Be sure to wipe down your phone daily to avoid unnecessary bacteria from getting onto your skin and contributing to cystic acne.

Is Your Diet To Blame For Chin Pimples

Sadly, when tackling acne, your diet could be the cause. There are two main food culprits to avoid if you get chin acne, according to Nick. First off, its high GI foods like chocolate, white bread and sugary breakfast cereals . The body produces insulin-like hormones to deal with the high amount of carbohydrate youre absorbing in the bowel, and for some those hormones cause acne.

Milk can also be a trigger. In people susceptible to acne, drinking milk including skimmed can make the condition worse, because it contains androgenic hormones. Nick recommends swapping to soy or almond milk over a six to eight-week trial. It takes that long to see an improvement. The good news is, yoghurt doesnt seem to have the same effect, thanks to the fermenting process removing some of the hormones so your mid-morning Fage habit is safe.

What Is The Treatment Of Hormonal Acne

There are many treatments to take to clear up hormonal acne. From over the counter options, face washes or creams, DIY methods and doctor-prescribed medications, you can try out many different techniques to get rid of your acne.

For over the counter medications or face washes, try to include products and cleaners that include salicylic or glycolic acid. These ingredients stop bacteria and reduce inflammation.

If you go with the cream option, dermatologists recommend patients use topical retinoids. Retinoids can help rid your skin of dead skin cells that end up clogging your pores. And over time, these creams will help your skin stay clear. While you can find many of them over the counter, your doctor can prescribe a higher dose for more severe acne.

Some patients cure their acne problems with DIY or natural methods. Tea tree oil and alpha hydroxy acid are some of the best ways to fight hormonal acne organically. For more severe acne, contact your doctor or dermatologist.

If you are a woman, one of the medications a health specialist might recommend is birth control. Birth control balances out your hormones and clears your skin. However, not every woman can take oral contraceptives, and men cannot at all. So what can a doctor recommend? The next medication they can give you is anti-androgen drugs. Anti-androgen drugs suppress the male hormone androgen, which lowers oil production and secretion.

Belif The True Cream Aqua Bomb

Just as you might use a pore-sucking mask on your T-zone, you can do the opposite with your moisturizer, Mattoli says. For example, if your skin isnt dry on your forehead, use less in that area. Ive been dealing with acne my entire life, and if I dont keep it under control, I will be a breakout mess, she says. I only moisturize where I need it.

Its taken a long time to unlearn the urge to apply 10 different anti-acne products to my face at once, but Ive realized I need to take it easy. Sure, applying an intense spot treatment to your entire face may be effective, but it will also leave your skin incredibly inflamed. More is not always better, especially with acne, Zeichner says. Higher concentrations of ingredients like benzoyl peroxide have been shown in studies to be no better, but certainly more irritating, than lower concentrations. A product like Kate Somervilles Anti Bac Clearing Lotion, for example, is far more gentle at 5%.

Treatments For Chin Acne

There are many acne treatment options to choose from. Not all treatments work for everyone but most pimples can be eliminated with a little work. Mild cases of small pimples or pustules can typically be treated with over-the-counter acne creams.

Products containing benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid usually help dry up pimples within a few days or weeks.

More stubborn cases of acne require help from a dermatologist. Depending on the type and severity of your acne, your dermatologist may recommend one or more of the following treatment options:

  • Topical treatments.Topical gels, creams, and ointments help to kill bacteria on your skin, reduce oil, and unclog pores. Prescription treatments may contain retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, or antibiotics.
  • Antibiotics. Your dermatologist may prescribe a course of oral antibiotics to help reduce the bacteria on your skin.
  • Birth control. Your doctor may prescribe hormonal birth control pills to help regulate acne-causing hormones.
  • Isotretinoin . You may receive this medication for severe acne that hasnt responded to other treatments.
  • Laser therapy. Laser and light therapies can help reduce the number of acne-causing bacteria on your skin.
  • Chemical peels. A chemical peel performed in your dermatologists office can reduce the appearance of pimples and blackheads.
  • Extraction. A large acne cyst or nodule can be drained and surgically extracted by your dermatologist.

The Ingredients In Your Products Are Causing Acne

If youre frustrated because unlike your friends with perfect complexions you actually do take care of your skin, your acne trigger could be the sneaky ingredients in your products. According to cosmetic dermatologist Jeanine Downie, MD, mineral oil, for example, is a super-heavy moisturizing agent found in some face moisturizers and creams that could clog your pores if you’re prone to blackheads and whiteheads. Coconut oil is also notorious for clogging pores, too. Additionally, fragrance and sodium lauryl sulfate can be found in many products and are common acne causes.

The zit fix:

Read your labels is easier said than done if you dont know what to look for, but a good place to start is by getting rid of any products that contain the aforementioned common irritants, switching to fragrance-free skincare and sulfate-free products. And when in doubt, Dr. Downie says toshop for products marked as noncomedogenic. If youve tried all the above and your breakouts continue to worsen, make an appointment with your dermatologist to see if you could be allergic to another ingredient.
