Newborn Acne Vs Infantile Acne

It’s important to note there’s a significant difference between acne in a newborn and acne in an older baby.

Infantile acne can appear in babies around 6 weeks of age. It’s not nearly as common as newborn baby acne but it’s much longer-lasting, lasting from a few months to several years.

Just like with newborn baby acne, infantile acne typically is harmless and goes away on its own. But, in some severe cases, it causes scarring and may be treated with prescription medications.

If your baby is older and developing acne, bring it to the attention of your pediatrician.

Antibiotics are prescribed for mild acne that is inflammatory. The antibiotics come in the form of cream, and its applied to the skin. Antibiotics are used to treat severe acne too, but these are usually taken by mouth. Multiple medications may be prescribed at once.

    • 1 Dont Pick, Pop, or Squeeze:

Babys skin is delicate, and opening up pimples on their face risks damage.

    • 2 Wash Baby with Lukewarm Water:

Cleansing the affected area with lukewarm, not hot, water and a soft washcloth is helpful. If youd like to use a cleanser, opt for a mild soap made specifically for babies instead of generic body soaps or adult face cleansers.

    • 3 Avoid Scrubbing:

Rubbing babys acne roughly or with a coarse cloth can further irritate the skin. Instead, wash gently with a soft washcloth and mild cleanser designed for babys delicate skin. Afterward, gently pat dry instead of rubbing.

    • 4 Skip the Treatments:

Babys acne may persist for weeks or even a few months, but its critical to steer clear of any over-the-counter acne treatments unless specifically directed by your doctor.

How Do I Treat Baby Acne

For neonatal acne, the best course of action is to simply take a deep breath and let it be. Parents may try all sorts of lotions and soaps to try to make it disappear, but they can exacerbate already sensitive skin, says Diambomba. Most of the time, you should just leave it alone and keep it dry and it will go away on its own. If youre really concerned, check with your family doctor, who may recommend a low-potency cortisol to calm inflammation, along with topical anti-yeast medicines, such as clotrimazole and tioconazole, says Rehmus.

Since infantile acne lasts longer and can cause scarring, its a good idea to request a referral to a dermatologist for an assessment. Infantile acne is treated like typical teenage acne but with more gentle preparations because of the age of the child, says Rehmus. This may include topical retinoids, antibiotics and benzoyl peroxide. When its severe enough, babies at risk of scarring will be treated with oral medication.

When Should You Speak To A Doctor

As with all things baby-related, its best to consult with their pediatrician anytime you have a concern. Generally, you can just make a note to bring it up at the next well-baby visit. But if your babys acne is characterized by blackheads, inflammation, pus-filled cysts, or pain, go ahead and call the pediatrician ASAP. They might want to rule out an allergic reaction, rash, or other skin conditions.

    How To Prevent Baby Acne

While its impossible to prevent neonatal acne, the newborn period is the best time to develop smart infant skincare habits, which can help prevent future rashes and skin issues.

Even if your baby was lucky enough to be born with silky-smooth skin, many of the strategies used to treat baby acne can also help prevent it:

Gofragrance-free. The chemicals that make up artificial fragrances can irritatebabys sensitive skin. Try hypoallergenic products, including lotions, shampoosand laundry detergents, when possible.

Wash, dont scrub. Scrubbing can cause further irritation and make matters worse.Instead, gently wipe and pat the babys skin dry.

Bathebaby regularly. For older, active infants, dirt and oil can get trapped inpores and exacerbate breakouts, just like with adults, so giving baby frequentbaths can help minimize the possibility of breakouts.

    What Causes Pregnancy Acne

Its not guaranteed that your face will break out during pregnancy, but theres a good chance that zits or splotches will strike even if youve never been plagued by pimples before.

The breakouts, which tend to hit sometime around week 6 of pregnancy, have to do with hormone surges, of course. Specifically, progesterone causes your glands secrete more oil, called sebum.

All that extra sebum can clog up pores and cause bacteria to build up, leading to breakouts.

Pat Your Baby Dry After A Bath

Baby Acne: Causes, Symptoms, And Treatment

Towels can be notoriously coarse…especially on your babys tender skin. And if they suffer from baby acne, the feeling can be even worse.

To keep bath towels from wreaking havoc on your babys acne, always pat their skin dry instead of rubbing. Rubbing with a rough cloth like a towel or washcloth can remove skin cells , which, in most cases, is a good thing. But for your babys already-irritated skin, it can cause more problems.

Similarly, the heat created by rubbing your little one dry can contribute to the discomfort caused by baby acne. Always gently pat your babys skin dry.

Newborn Acne Is Generally Nothing To Worry About

About 20% of newborns have a type of acne called neonatal acne. Youll usually see it at about 2 weeks of age. However, it can develop any time before 6 weeks of age. Sometimes, a baby is born with acne.

If your newborn has acne, youll usually see breakouts on your babys cheeks and nose. Acne can also appear on a babys forehead, chin, scalp, neck, back, or chest.

Neonatal acne is generally nothing to worry about. It rarely causes a scar and tends to go away on its own in a few weeks to months.

Other Ways To Help Clear Baby Acne

But while breast milk is a natural remedy, it isnt the only remedy to help get rid of stubborn baby acne. Here are a few tips to help clear your babys skin:

    • Bathe your baby. Newborns dont need to be bathed daily. But you can give your baby a bath using warm water and mild baby soap to gently cleanse their pores. Baby soap is gentle and delicate to their sensitive skin, thus less likely to cause skin irritation.
    • Dont put lotion on your babys face. Clogged pores can cause acne, so only use moisturizing body lotion thats designed for a babys sensitive skin. Also, choose baby lotion thats fragrant-free and nongreasy to avoid skin irritation. Try these options.
    • Dont scrub bumps. When bathing your baby or applying breast milk to acne, be gentle and dont scrub. Accidentally popping acne bumps can cause scarring or a skin infection. Also, take steps to prevent your baby from scratching their own acne. Cover their hands with socks or mittens, and keep their nails trimmed.

    What Is Baby Acne

There are two different types of acne, depending on babys age. Newborn acne, otherwise known as neonatal acne, can appear when the baby is a newborn up to 3 months oldand its normal.

Neonatal acne is a benign skin condition that roughly 20 per cent of newborns have, explains Katie Pyle, DO, a pediatrician at UCHealth Pediatric Care Clinic in Firestone, Colorado.

We dont know the cause, but its likely either due to the stimulation of babys oil glands from moms hormones or an inflammatory reaction to a type of yeast that colonizes on a babys skin.

The good news: While your baby may have a few pimples in her pics, newborn acne doesnt point to future skin problems.

If the baby is older than 3 months, he may be experiencing whats called infantile acne, especially if you notice larger red, raised blemishes or pustules, says Meagan ONeill, MD, a paediatrician with Riley Childrens Health in Indianapolis.

Like newborn acne, infant acne occurs in about one-fifth of babies. While neonatal acne tends to go away on its own with age, infantile acne may stick around longer and, since it can be more severe than neonatal acne, may require treatment to avoid scarring.

For parents dealing with neonatal acne, they can rest assured that this common skin condition isnt painful. The child is not inconvenienced, says Diambomba. Actually, it bothers the parents more because thats when people often take a lot of pictures.

Green was worried about her sons comfort at first. You feel bad, she says. It looks angry because its so red, but it doesnt affect them at all.

Three weeks after onset, Green found that Charlies skin had mostly cleared up. I ended up doing the path of least resistance, she says. Every morning, I would clean his face with a warm compress and dry it really well. I didnt put anything on it. I thought it would figure itself out.
