Baby Acne: Causes Prevention And The Best Treatment Methods

Even though baby acne is one of the most common skin conditions that develop in newborns and infants, watching these little bumps flare up can be a stressful time for a parent. To help alleviate that stress, the experts at Mustela have put together 11 tips for getting rid of baby acne.

Before we get to the top 11 baby acne treatment tips, lets touch on four important questions:

  • What is baby acne?
  • What does baby acne look like?
  • How can I tell baby acne apart from other skin conditions?
  • What causes baby acne?

Dont Let Your Baby Scratch Or Pick

Unlike you, your baby doesnt understand whats going on with their skin. The swelling and itchiness may cause your little one to scratch, rub, or pick their baby acne without even knowing it.

If you see your babys skin becoming more red and swollen, or if you see your little one rub the inflamed areas, its time to cover their hands with baby mittens or soft socks. This doesnt have to be a permanent thing, and your baby doesnt have to wear them all the time. Its simply to give the acne time to heal.

Fight & Prevent Baby Acne With A Gentle Cleansing Product

Keeping baby acne under control and even getting rid of it completely can be as simple as cleaning your baby with a gentle cleansing product regularly. But you dont want to clean their delicate, sensitive skin with just any cleanser.

Its best to use one thats specially formulated for newborns. We recommend using a product that contains micellar water, like Mustelas Gentle No Rinse Cleansing Water, so it does not dry out their sensitive skin.

Best of all, Mustelas Gentle No Rinse Cleansing Water doesnt require rinsing and is great for when youre on the go!

Micellar water is composed of tiny cleansing oil molecules suspended in super-soft water. It dissolves dirt and impurities to cleanse your babys skin without stripping off its natural oils. And because Mustelas Gentle No Rinse Cleansing Water contains no parabens, phthalates, or phenoxyethanol, its safe to use on children of any age.

What Is Baby Acne

Baby Acne Go Away! Does your newborn have pesky pimples? #parenting # ...

As noted above, baby acne is a harmless and very common condition among infants that closely resembles acne in teenagers or adults.

The American Academy of Dermatology divides acne into two categories:

  • Newborn acne . This affects 20 percent of newborns and typically develops between the ages of two and six weeks. In some cases, a baby may be born with acne.
  • Infantile acne. This condition typically arises between the ages of three and six months. This type of acne may be slightly more complicated than newborn acne. In some cases, parents may mistake another condition for baby acne. For these reasons, its a good idea to consult your pediatrician or a pediatric dermatologist if your child develops acne after the age of three months.

Just like in older populations, newborn acne manifests as breakouts on a babys skin. Most commonly, these breakouts will show up on a newborns cheeks, nose, and/or forehead. They tend to look like small red or white bumps, and the skin around these bumps may appear reddish. The acne may become more inflamed when your baby is fussing or crying. In some cases, baby acne may appear on the back, scalp, chest, or other parts of the body.

How long does baby acne last?

While it can be a little alarming to see breakouts on your infants face or body, its helpful to remember that newborn acne is generally a harmless and temporary condition. The acne will typically clear up on its own within a few weeks or months, and it rarely causes scarring.

Common Types Of Baby Acne

If your newborn develops neonatal acne, the more common form of baby acne, it will generally appear within the first two weeks of life. If, however, the appearance of your babys skin shows the signs of acne at six months or later, then it could be infantile acne. Infantile acne looks similar to neonatal acne but may persist for one-to-two years and, in severe cases, may result in scarring as well as an increased incidence of adolescent acne.5

What Does Baby Acne Look Like

Baby acne looks like tiny red or white bumps or pustules that appear on your infant’s cheeks, nose, eyelids, chin, and/or forehead. Sometimes the acne can also appear on your babyâs scalp or on their neck or upper trunk. Unlike acne that teens and adults can experience, baby acne does not have blackheads or whiteheads.

What Causes Baby Acne

There is no way to prevent baby acne. Experts are not exactly sure what causes baby acne, but it could be due to one of the following:

  • Inflammation caused by yeast on your baby’s skin

  • Overstimulated oil glands in your baby’s skin caused by encountering hormones in the placenta during your pregnancy.

Baby acne has nothing to do with the type of acne that a teenager may experience.

If symptoms start at 3 to 6 months of age, this is known as infantile acne.

Like neonatal acne, infantile acne also generally affects the face and occurs more commonly in boys. This type of acne usually goes away on its own within three months to a year, but sometimes it can be more severe and carry a risk of scarring. As a result, long-term treatment with topical retinoids and antibacterials may be required. Testing for elevated levels of hormones is also done sometimes.

Most cases of infantile acne resolve by age 4 or 5, but some remain active into puberty. Babies with a history of infantile acne have an increased incidence of teenage acne. If your baby is developing acne, notify your pediatrician.

Dress Your Baby Carefully

Babies have super delicate skin thats intolerant and easily irritated. This is normal and nothing to be concerned about. Just be sure to dress your baby in soft, loose-fitting clothing so that you dont cause their baby acne to flare up.

Its also best to use baby-friendly, hypoallergenic laundry detergents to wash your babys clothes, sheets, and blankets. This will protect your little ones skin from any irritating chemicals that ordinary detergents may contain.

For bedtime, try Mustelas Stelatopia Skin Soothing Pajamas to relieve skin discomfort. These pajamas will also reduce your little ones desire to pick at their acne. Youll be relieved knowing that your little one is clothed in material thats hypoallergenic, free of parabens and phenoxyethanol, and made with 100 percent natural ingredients.

Newborn Acne Is Generally Nothing To Worry About

About 20% of newborns have a type of acne called neonatal acne. Youll usually see it at about 2 weeks of age. However, it can develop any time before 6 weeks of age. Sometimes, a baby is born with acne.

If your newborn has acne, youll usually see breakouts on your babys cheeks and nose. Acne can also appear on a babys forehead, chin, scalp, neck, back, or chest.

Neonatal acne is generally nothing to worry about. It rarely causes a scar and tends to go away on its own in a few weeks to months.

Is It Baby Acne Or A Rash

While its possible to confuse infant acne with that other common newborn skin condition, milia, the two arent the same. Baby acne looks like red pimples, while milia are tiny white bumps or whiteheads. But you need to treat both conditions the same: with washing, watching and waiting.

There are also a number of skin rashes and other skin conditions in newborn babies which, unlike newborn acne, are often itchy and uncomfortable for your little one and tend to spread beyond the face. A few of the most common:

  • Baby heat rash: These clusters of tiny, moist, red bumps look similar to acne and often appear on babys arms, legs, upper chest and diaper area in addition to her face when its hot outside.
  • Diaper rash: This rash caused by moisture, irritants and too little air appears as red, irritated skin in babys diaper area.
  • Cradle cap: Also called seborrheic dermatitis, these tiny red bumps are smaller than acne and may be accompanied by yellow, flaky skin that looks like scales. While it usually appears on the head, it may spread to the eyebrows and upper body too.
  • Infant eczema: Skin appears dry, flaky and red, usually in patches around the cheeks and on the scalp. The rash then spreads, often to elbow creases and behind the knees, and progresses to fluid-filled pimples that pop. If eczema is not treated, it can lead to scabbing and oozing.

What The Nhs Says:

When Does Baby Acne Go Away? Experts Answer

‘Many things can cause a rash in babies and children, and they’re often nothing to worry about.’

For baby acne, they recommend that washing your baby’s face with water and a mild moisturiser will help their skin to heal, but, do not use acne medicines intended for older children and adults.

However, they do advise to go to A& E or call 999 if they have a rash and they:

What Should I Do

If your baby develops ETN, there is no need to worry. Your baby will not be in any discomfort or have any distress related to the rash. The skin may look red and angry but do your best to ignore it.

Avoid over-washing the baby – babies have delicate skin that can dry out easily with detergents. Resist any temptation to pick, squeeze or burst any pus-filled spots . This would make a skin infection more likely to occur and may lead to scarring. Creams and lotions are not required for the rash. If you are already using products to wash and moisturise your baby it is fine to continue them but ensure they are fragrance-free and designed for use in babies.

How To Prevent Baby Acne

While its impossible to prevent neonatal acne, the newborn period is the best time to develop smart infant skin care habits, which can help prevent future rashes, infant acne and skin issues. Even if baby was lucky enough to be born with silky-smooth skin, many of the strategies used to treat baby acne can also help prevent it:

Go fragrance free. The chemicals that make up artificial fragrances can irritate babys sensitive skin. Try hypoallergenic products, including lotions, shampoos and laundry detergents, when possible, to help prevent newborn acne.

Wash, dont scrub. Scrubbing can cause further irritation and make matters worse. Instead, gently wipe and pat babys skin dry to help prevent baby acne on the face.

Bathe baby regularly. For older, active infants, dirt and oil can get trapped in pores and exacerbate breakouts, just like with adults, so giving baby frequent baths can help minimize the possibility of breakouts.

Whats The Difference Between Baby Acne And A Drool Rash

Have you noticed that your baby has a rash around their mouth? Are you wondering if its baby acne? Well, we obviously cant rule that possibility out without seeing your baby. But we can point out that what your little one might actually be dealing with is a drool rash.

You know how babies are constantly drooling, right? The presence of saliva on babys chin, neck, chest, cheeks, and anywhere else they manage to get their slobber can cause irritation. That irritation, known as a drool rash, typically presents as flat or slightly raised patches of skin with small red bumps. To minimize the chance of this happening, keep a burp cloth handy and frequently dab babys face dry.

How Do You Treat Baby Acne

how i cleared my acne FOR GOOD *something finally worked*

In two words, you dont. Well, usually. Because baby acne typically disappears on its own within several months, no medical treatment is usually recommended, explains the Mayo Clinic. If your babys acne lingers for much longer, your babys doctor may recommend a medicated cream or other treatment.

You definitely dont want to try any over-the-counter medications without consulting your babys pediatrician. The last thing you want to do is exacerbate your cute little bubelas skin woes even more. What you can do is keep babys face as clean as possible by gently washing it with warm water every day. And no matter how many Dr. Pimple Popper videos youve watched on YouTube, do not squeeze the bumps on your babys face!

What Causes Newborn Baby Acne

Doctors dont know for sure why newborn baby acne develops but one of the most popular theories for the cause of newborn acne is that hormones passed from mother to baby through the placenta and also breastmilk are to blame.

These hormones aggravate the sebaceous glands causing pimples to break out on the newborns face, usually on the cheeks, nose and forehead, but sometimes on babys neck, back and chest too.

Interesting fact: Newborn baby acne is more common in boys.

What Else Could It Be

People may also confuse other skin conditions, such as erythema toxicum neonatorum and chickenpox, with baby acne or eczema.

Erythema toxicum neonatorum is a harmless skin condition that may occur within the first couple of days of life. It causes small spots and pimple of 14 mm in diameter on the arms and legs. Notably, the rash does not appear on the palms of the hands or the soles of the feet. It typically clears up by itself within 5 to 14 days.

Chickenpox is a contagious skin disease that causes a rash of blister-like spots and pimples on the stomach, back, and face. The rash can spread across the whole body and tends to occur alongside itching, tiredness, and fever.

Chickenpox can lead to severe complications in babies, so anyone who suspects chickenpox in a baby should take them to see a doctor immediately.

Tips For Baby Skin Care

Bathing

  • You dont need to bath your baby every day. Every second day or a few times a week is fine.
  • Pat, rather than rub, your babys skin to dry them off after a bath.

Powders and soaps

  • Do not use antimicrobial cleansers or any that contain chlorhexidine, as these are harsh on your babys skin.
  • Be cautious of herbal cleansers, as they can cause a skin reaction.
  • Do not use talcum powder.

Moisturisers

  • Most skin dryness will clear up on its own, but if you use a moisturiser, choose a simple one that has no added perfumes or ingredients.
  • Try to use a moisturiser that has been tested for use on babies.

Other tips

  • Keep your baby warm, but not hot. Being hot can dry their skin.
  • If you have a family history of skin issues your babys skin care may need extra care so talk to your midwife, nurse or doctor.

Caring For The Umbilical Cord

Water is all you need to clean it. Do not pull on the stump, even when it starts to come off. It will fall off on its own. You can prevent your babys diaper from rubbing the area by folding it over.

Contact your doctor if your baby has a fever or if the umbilical area:

  • appears red and swollen,
  • oozes yellow pus,
  • produces a foul-smelling discharge, or
  • bleeds significantly .

How Should Cradle Cap Be Treated

Cradle cap will go away on its own and does not need to be treated. If you want, you can wash the hair with a mild baby shampoo and gently brush out the scales with a soft bristled brush to help control it. However, shampooing your babys hair too often will also cause dry scalp.

Baby oil or mineral oil may help soften the scales. When applying the oil, rub only small amounts into the scales. Then shampoo and brush out the oil about an hour later to avoid more build-up.

If your baby has dry, scaling, thickened skin over the forehead, cheeks and behind the ears, this is called seborrheic dermatitis. An unscented moisturizer can be used 2 to 3 times a day on the skin. A mild hydrocortisone cream is safe and usually effective. If this doesnt help, see your health care provider. This will usually improve by 4 months of age.
