When Will The Breakouts End

Chin Acne: Why You’re Getting It & How To Prevent It Naturally

by Danielle Braff, AARP, April 24, 2019

Im in my 50swhy do I still have a pizza face?!?

When I was in my teens, my face was slathered in pimples. At least during that point in my life, my peers were also awash in spots.

Fast forward 25 years. I have a mortgage, a tween daughter and a full-time job. And I still have pimples. Only now Im one of a handful of people my age who is still dabbing toothpaste on my forehead at night, still shopping for Clean & Clear, still searching for concealers powerful enough to hide the massive red spots that pop up seemingly daily .

Turns out, Im not alone . Adult acne develops in up to 22 percent of women and 3 percent of men, says Tsippora Shainhouse, a Los Angeles-based dermatologist in private practice.

And while teenage acne can be attributed nearly 100 percent to hormones, adult acne occurs for myriad reasons, from hormones to genetics, diet, stress, cosmetics and smoking. Adult pimples are also dispersed differently than the teenage genre .

Tips For Cleaning Your Cats Face If They Have Acne

For most patients, improved hygiene is core to the treatment plan in other words, you are going to need to start washing your cats face.

Your vet may recommend cleaning their face with benzoyl peroxide facial wipes, but you need to get wipes specifically made for cats, as human wipes are too strong.

Clipping the nearby fur can also cut down the amount of bacteria.

Cleaning water and food dishes with increased frequency and a switch to stainless steel, glass, or ceramic dishes may also help for some cats.

What Gets Rid Of Hormonal Acne

Before you get downtrodden about the finicky nature of hormonal acne, remember that its pesky, but perfectly normal. So normal, in fact, that there are many methods to help treat it.

Most people with hormonal acne have tried over-the-counter treatments to no avail. If they arent working for you, you may need to seek the help of a dermatologist, who can offer prescription hormonal acne treatments. In general, its a good idea to see your dermatologist if you have deep or cystic pimples, because they could be a marker of something more serious, such as a thyroid condition or abnormal hormone levels, says Dr. Jegasothy.

If youve stumbled across natural treatments for hormonal acne, like using certain essential oils or other home remedies, Dr. Rodney says theyre not really legitand can sometimes make the situation worse. She recommends trying one of the hormonal acne medications or treatments listed below instead:

The hormonal acne treatment pyramid starts with good over-the-counter cleansers. When choosing yours, look for alpha7 or beta hydroxy acids, such as glycolic, lactic, or salicylic acids8. As you wash your face, each of these ingredients helps exfoliate the skin by unclogging pores to varying degrees of intensity. Finding the right kind that works for you might take some careful experimentation, but the La-Roche Posay Effaclar Medicated Cleanser and the Paulas Choice Pore Normalizing Cleanser are two derm-approved face washes for acne-prone skin.

Causes Of Pimples On The Chin

Acne is often caused due to clogged pores. Pores are usually clogged with oil, dead skin cells, and grime, and when bacteria get trapped in the skin pores, it causes inflammation, leading to the appearance of pimples.

On the other hand, hormonal acne occurs first around the mouth, chin, and jawline. These are hormonal acne that comes and goes throughout the menstrual cycle. The breakouts commonly appear during the ovulation or just before the period begins.

Three Main Causes Of Acne

Postpartum Acne: Causes and Treatments That Work

There are three main causes of acne:

  • Inflammation
  • Bacteria
  • Oil production

Oily skin has more acne due to excess oil, but acne in dry skin is more likely due to inflammation caused by irritation.

Dry skin is more likely to become inflamed because it is often more irritated by minor things, such as constant scratching or touching, or even harsh winter air. Overactive oil glands are undesirable, but our skin needs a thin layer of protective sebum.

Inflammation causes the tissue around the pores to swell slightly and prevents microbes from penetrating them. Excess sebum production caused by irritation is another of the bodys protective measures against irritants and bacteria. However, because of the inflammation, extra oil, any dead skin cells, or bacteria already present, get trapped in the pore. This can cause everything from blackheads to cysts and pustules.

Acne On Chin And Neck

If you have acne on chin and neck, it could be an indication for PCOS which affects your lower face including your cheeks, jawline, chin, and upper neck. Any other cause of acne under the chin can also cause them on the neck.

Generally, if you often get acne on your neck, it is a sign that your body might be battling with a bacterial infection.

Adult Acne On Chin And Causes

Some grown-up men and women tend to battle with acne, including the ones that affect their chin areas. If you doubt this, research from the University of Pennsylvania has found that low-grade, persistent acne is common among women in their twenties, thirties, and forties.

Of course, the causes of chin acne in adults are obvious, some of which have already mentioned and others we will also discuss more while looking at chin acne causes. Generally, the most common causes of chin acne in adults revolve around their diets, stress and hormonal changes. Unlike teenagers, adults will tend to have acne on their neck, chin and jawline. Rarely are their cheeks or forehead affected with zits or pimples.

Is Chin Acne A Sign Of Your Period

The fluctuation of hormones that occurs during a menstrual cycle may lead to increased production of oil on the skin. This excess of oil may cause clogged pores and, thus, acne. Furthermore, while having acne on your chin doesnt necessarily indicate that your period is coming, there could be a correlation between the two scenarios.

How to Clear Chin Breakouts (Truthful Expert Advice)

Treating acne in women is similar to treating acne in adolescents, but adult acne can sometimes be more stubborn to respond to treatment than adolescent acne.1,7

Oral contraceptives can regulate hormones and thus can be effective in reducing premenstrual acne, but can come with side effects, so it’s important to always consider this treatment carefully alongside a trusted physician.

Topical agents like benzoyl peroxide and retinoids can also be effective in treating adult female acne.1,10,11

Prevention: Women can make strides in preventing acne by properly using cosmetics, reducing stress, keeping body weight in check, getting plenty of sleep, eating well, and not smoking.

Chin Acne Treatment: What Works

Whether you have acne on your chin from playing sports, using the wrong toothpaste, or just being a teenager, there are solutions. When looking for a good treatment for chin acne, it helps to remember three things. First of all, your chin is naturally dry, so look for a moisturizing product. Second, your chin can easily accumulate oil and bacteria, so a cleansing product can help. Third and most importantly, remember that chin acne is very normal, so try not to worry.

If you have acne only on your chin, you may benefit most from our DIY spot treatments listed below, but if your acne is more widespread, the best treatment is a gentle, consistent acne treatment system. The best approach to acne treatment is a skincare routine you can follow every day, and treats your skin gently while still taking care of business. We recommend Exposed Skincare because of their affordable cost, one-year money-back guarantee, and carefully designed formula.

Unlike many other acne treatment systems, Exposed doesnt use high concentrations of active ingredients that will dry out your skin and cause more acne.

Instead, they combine low concentrations of active ingredients like benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid along with a variety of natural ingredients like green tea extract and aloe vera. This combination is gentle, but effective, perfect for treating chin acne.

Acne Mechanica Along The Jawline

Another primary jawline acne cause is friction and pressure, often caused by playing sports that require headgear with a chin strap, or playing instruments like the violin. This type of pimple is called acne mechanica.

Playing the violin or wearing a chin strap causes friction and pressure in that area, a perfect recipe for pimples, especially in dry skin.

Chin Acne: What It Means Treatments And Prevention

May 24, 2021

  • Acne is a skin condition in which pores become clogged by dead skin cells, oil and bacteria
  • Acne on the chin is often caused by hormonal fluctuations
  • It can be treated with over-the-counter products or prescription medication
  • Prevent occasional chin pimples by following a few simple guidelines

Chin acne is a common occurrence in both teenagers and adults of both sexes. Acne can occur anywhere on the face, but one of the most common areas for pimples to appear is in the chin area.

Although the reason for it isnt 100% understood, its widely recognized that acne on the chin and jawline is primarily caused by hormonal fluctuations.

Occasional pimples on the chin can be effectively treated with over-the-counter products. More severe forms of acne on the chin, especially hormonal acne, is most effectively treated with prescription medication.

Causes Of Feline Chin Acne

Although this disease is poorly understood, several potential factors may contribute to unsightly blackheads, including:

A distinct correlation has appeared between feline chin acne and the use of plastic food and water dishes. It was originally thought that a contact allergy to the plastic material caused acne, but now it is believed that an excessive amount of bacteria resides on plastic dishes, leading to acne development. Plastic is much more difficult to clean by hand than glass, ceramic, or stainless steel, as tiny abrasions easily trap bacteria. Avoid this potential issue by switching your cats dishes to an impermeable material and washing frequently if she is prone to developing comedones on her chin.

Allergies appear to be another common culprit for chin acne development. Pets allergies tend to manifest in their skin, rather than in the typical hay fever signs that people have. If your cat is allergic to an ingredient in her diet or a substance in her environment, you may notice chin acne, in addition to inflamed skin, itching, licking, chewing, ear infections, and hair loss.

How To Prevent Acne Mechanica

First, be sure to wash both your face and your instrument or chin strap before and after every use. This will help to get rid of bacteria, dirt, and extra sebum.

Choose a face wash with low concentrations of salicylic acid to unclog pores like Exposed Facial Cleanser. This will help break up any sebum that got clogged in the pores, but won’t irritate the skin further. That’s because it’s soap-free and hypoallergenic and contains sage extract and pro-vitamin B5 to calm existing irritation.

Treatment For Cat Acne

NEVER pick at your cats acne. Picking will only worsen the condition and potentially cause more pain and even infection.

Initially, treatment may involve the use of oral or injectable antibiotics and topical shampoo or wipes.

If your cats skin begins to clear, the shampoos and topical treatments can gradually be stopped, but if the outbreaks reoccur, your veterinarian will help develop an appropriate maintenance routine to keep your cats chin as clear as possible.

Maintenance cleansing with gentle scrubbing has been successful for many cats because it extends the amount of time between episodes and treatment.

Four Ways To Prevent Acne On Your Face

Wherever your breakouts tend to erupt, these general skincare tips can help:

  • Stay clean: Wash your face once a day with a gentle cleanser.
  • Favor foam: Dr. Kassouf recommends foaming cleansers rather than lotion cleansers since the suds are better at lifting oils and dirt from the skin.
  • Exfoliate with care: If you scrub too aggressively, you might irritate your skin and make acne worse. Use exfoliating brushes or scrubs once or twice a week at most. If you have any irritation, back off, she says.
  • Wash makeup brushes regularly: They can get gunked up with bacteria and oils, contributing to plugged pores. Try shampooing them every week or two with a gentle, fragrance-free shampoo.

We all have to take our lumps sometimes. But if you can read the clues in your breakouts, those lumps will hopefully be few and far between.

How To Get Rid Of Chin Acne Fast

Weve all seen the pimple popping videos that circulate the internet, but when it comes to an at-home remedy to quickly zap your chin pimples, that may not be your best answer. While it may be tempting, it is important to avoid picking, popping, or squeezing your breakout as that can trigger more inflammation and lead to potential scarring, Dr. Garshick warns.

Instead, try one of the expert-approved quick fixes or make an appointment with your dermatologist stat. For any patient struggling with acne, I suggest seeing a dermatologist to discuss options and to begin a treatment regimen. There is no one size fits all approach, and treatments are tailored to the individual patient over time to find an effective combination, says Heather Richmond, M.D., F.A.A.D., board-certified medical and cosmetic dermatologist in Texas.

Dr. Rogers says using retinol regularly for hormonal acne can help with skin turnover, getting the deep acne to surface and disappear. And not only will retinol help resolve your chin acne faster, but it can actually make the dark spots and shadows disappear quicker, too. She suggests starting with 0.25% for dry skin and 0.5% for oily or less sensitive skin. Anything higher will be super drying.

Retinols are extremely beneficial to unclog pores and prevent acne, and they can be found in many over-the-counter formulations, Dr. Richmond says. She notes that retinol can also be sold under the name adapalene.

Signs And Symptoms Of Pimples On Chin

There are several different types of acne, each of which looks a little different. In addition to pimples, there are other blemishes that may indicate mild or severe acne.

Common signs of acne on the chin include:

Whiteheads and blackheads

These are clogged pores and are the mildest forms of acne. When the pore is clogged, it can either close over the debris or remain open. If it closes, you will see a small white or flesh-toned bump, which is called a whitehead. If it remains open, it will look like a dark spot and is called a blackhead.

Whiteheads and blackheads usually go away on their own but can turn into pimples.

Papules are early pimples. They occur when debris pushes deeper into the skin instead of remaining at surface level. They are small, red bumps that feel hard to the touch.

Pustules are much like papules but contain a yellowish pus. The center of the red pustule is often tinged white or yellow as a result.

Acne nodules and cysts

These are often painful blemishes that penetrate deep into the skin and can cause scarring. If you have this form of acne, you should see a doctor to help treat it.

Causes Of Acne On The Chin

Hormonal acne is caused by raised levels of androgens. Androgens are male hormones such as testosterone that increase the production of sebum, your skins natural oil.

Hormonal acne can occur in both genders during puberty and can continue to be an issue for adult women when androgen levels increase in the days leading up to menstruation.

Acne on the chin can also be caused by diet, genetics and poor skin care practices.

For men who shave, chin pimples may in fact be ingrown hairs. An ingrown hair is a hair that grows back into the skin causing a painful red bump resembling a pimple.

Hormonal Acne: Diet Dos And Donts

The exact role between diet and hormonal acne isnt fully understood. Some foods may help prevent acne particularly inflammation-fighting foods.

Plant-based foods high in antioxidants may help reduce inflammation and promote clearer skin. Omega-3 fatty acids may also decrease skin inflammation.

Contrary to popular belief, junk food alone doesnt cause acne. But overdoing it on certain foods may lead to increased inflammation.

You may consider limiting the following:

  • sugar
  • refined carbs, such as white bread and pasta
  • red meats

Treatments For Chin Acne

There are many acne treatment options to choose from. Not all treatments work for everyone but most pimples can be eliminated with a little work. Mild cases of small pimples or pustules can typically be treated with over-the-counter acne creams.

Products containing benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid usually help dry up pimples within a few days or weeks.

More stubborn cases of acne require help from a dermatologist. Depending on the type and severity of your acne, your dermatologist may recommend one or more of the following treatment options:

  • Topical treatments.Topical gels, creams, and ointments help to kill bacteria on your skin, reduce oil, and unclog pores. Prescription treatments may contain retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, or antibiotics.
  • Antibiotics. Your dermatologist may prescribe a course of oral antibiotics to help reduce the bacteria on your skin.
  • Birth control. Your doctor may prescribe hormonal birth control pills to help regulate acne-causing hormones.
  • Isotretinoin . You may receive this medication for severe acne that hasnt responded to other treatments.
  • Laser therapy. Laser and light therapies can help reduce the number of acne-causing bacteria on your skin.
  • Chemical peels. A chemical peel performed in your dermatologists office can reduce the appearance of pimples and blackheads.
  • Extraction. A large acne cyst or nodule can be drained and surgically extracted by your dermatologist.
