Newborn Acne Vs Infantile Acne

Unlike the tiny pimples of newborn acne, infantile acne can include blackheads, cysts, or nodules, and can persist until their first birthday.

In addition to the appearance of the acne, onset timing is also useful for distinguishing between newborn and infantile acne. Breakouts that begin in the first four weeks of life are typically newborn acne, while those that develop after four weeks are more likely to be infantile acne.

What Causes Newborn Baby Acne

Doctors dont know for sure why newborn baby acne develops but one of the most popular theories for the cause of newborn acne is that hormones passed from mother to baby through the placenta and also breastmilk are to blame.

These hormones aggravate the sebaceous glands causing pimples to break out on the newborns face, usually on the cheeks, nose and forehead, but sometimes on babys neck, back and chest too.

Interesting fact: Newborn baby acne is more common in boys.

Newborn Acne Is Generally Nothing To Worry About

Baby Acne: What Causes Them And How You Can Prevent

About 20% of newborns have a type of acne called neonatal acne. Youll usually see it at about 2 weeks of age. However, it can develop any time before 6 weeks of age. Sometimes, a baby is born with acne.

If your newborn has acne, youll usually see breakouts on your babys cheeks and nose. Acne can also appear on a babys forehead, chin, scalp, neck, back, or chest.

Neonatal acne is generally nothing to worry about. It rarely causes a scar and tends to go away on its own in a few weeks to months.

Dont Rub Your Babys Skin With Rough Fabric

Rough fabrics can make your babys acne worse by further irritating the already-sensitive skin. Thats why its so important to keep rough fabrics away from your newborn. Dress your baby in super-soft clothing, and keep wool and other coarse fibers away from their skin.

Similarly, dont bathe your baby with a washcloth. The roughness of the cloth can rip open the bumps and lead to infection. Instead, wash your little one with your hands, but be sure to remove any jewelry that may poke or prick.

When To See A Doctor

You may need to see a dermatologist if your babys acne doesnt resolve within several months. You should also visit a dermatologist if your baby has infantile acne after they are 6 weeks old. Following a doctors advice can help prevent infantile acne from causing scars.

The doctor will look at your baby and make sure the skin condition is in fact acne. Its possible to mistake acne with another skin condition, so your doctor will want to rule out other possibilities like rashes, infection, or skin irritation.

Your doctor may ask you if other people in your family have acne, and what kind of products youve been applying to your babys skin. If youre using multiple products, be prepared to list them all.

If your baby develops acne after theyre 6 weeks old, it could be a sign of another issue. Your babys doctor may want to do an x-ray or blood test to investigate.

Make sure to tell your doctor if your baby has had any other symptoms like fever, other skin problems, or abnormal behavior.

Most cases of infantile acne last six months to a year or longer. Children with infantile acne can have more severe acne when they are teenagers.

When To Consult Your Healthcare Provider

If anything about your baby’s complexion seems out of the ordinary, or if you’re concerned that the condition isn’t getting better after three to four months, consult your baby’s healthcare provider. The healthcare provider may offer a medicated cream or some other treatment. But be sure not to use any over-the-counter creams or medications without consulting your healthcare provider first, as these can damage your baby’s delicate skin.In addition, contact the healthcare provider if you ever notice any of the following with your baby:

  • Skin blisters

  • Poor feeding.

When To See The Pediatrician About Baby Acne

FDA Acknowledges Qualified Health Claim Linking Early Peanut Introduction and Reduced Risk of Developing Peanut Allergy in 2017:

For most infants with severe eczema and/or egg allergy who are already eating solid foods, introducing foods containing ground peanuts between 4 and 10 months of age and continuing consumption may reduce the risk of developing peanut allergy by 5 years of age. FDA has determined, however, that the evidence supporting this claim is limited to one study.

If your infant has severe eczema and/or egg allergy, check with your infants healthcare provider before feeding foods containing ground peanuts.

Fight & Prevent Baby Acne With A Gentle Cleansing Product

Keeping baby acne under control and even getting rid of it completely can be as simple as cleaning your baby with a gentle cleansing product regularly. But you dont want to clean their delicate, sensitive skin with just any cleanser.

Its best to use one thats specially formulated for newborns. We recommend using a product that contains micellar water, like Mustelas Gentle No Rinse Cleansing Water, so it does not dry out their sensitive skin.

Best of all, Mustelas Gentle No Rinse Cleansing Water doesnt require rinsing and is great for when youre on the go!

Micellar water is composed of tiny cleansing oil molecules suspended in super-soft water. It dissolves dirt and impurities to cleanse your babys skin without stripping off its natural oils. And because Mustelas Gentle No Rinse Cleansing Water contains no parabens, phthalates, or phenoxyethanol, its safe to use on children of any age.

    Natural Baby Acne Treatments

Although baby acne itself is as natural as it comes, its totally understandable to want to lessen the bumps for those adorable newborn photos . The American Academy of Dermatology has also endorsed the topical application of probiotics to treat acne. Research has found that topically applied probiotics help treat acne in three ways.

1.) Probiotics applied to the skin create a protective shield so that the babys immune system doesnt target and worsen acne.

2.) The probiotics themselves can attack bad bacteria that could be triggering inflammation.

3.) Probiotics have a calming effect on the skin cells to reduce immune responses.

After the study, some participants applied yogurt masks to their skin to recreate the helpful effects of probiotics. This could also be achieved by making a paste with liquid or powder probiotics. However, there has been no research or studies to prove the effectiveness of homemade probiotic masks.

While a dermatologist should examine a child who develops acne after 6 weeks of age, this type of acne often clears on its own. Clearing usually takes about 6 months to 1 year. Some children, however, have acne for a longer time. Its possible for acne to continue through the teen years.
