Tea Can Decrease Dht Levels
If youve read our guide to hormonal acne, youll know that I usually dont recommend lowering testosterone in order to achieve clear skin, especially if youre a male.
With that being said, lowering DHT levels while maintaining healthy overall testosterone levels may be a generally safe and effective method at preventing and treating hormonal acne in men and women.
One study found that EGCG may be effective at preventing testosterone from converting into DHT.https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3665011/ Lower DHT generally means less sebum oil, which means a lower risk for clogged pores and acne infections.
Its worth noting that there are also studies that find green tea lowers overall testosterone production in rats. While we lack human studies to support this, its something to be aware of before consuming tea on a regular basis .
Possible Benefits Of Tea Tree Oil
Tea tree has been shown to have antimicrobial properties, which is probably why it is a popular natural remedy for treating acne. It’s believed that tea tree oil helps kill Propioni acnes bacteria, which are responsible for acne breakouts.
As a 2015 Cochrane review of studies found, only a few small studies have been done, so the actual effect tea tree oil has on acne is still unclear. It found only one worthy of inclusion. That was a 2007 study that found 5% tea tree oil improved acne when compared to a placebo.
Much more research needs to be done before tea tree oil can be listed as a proven acne treatment.

Is Tea Tree Oil Good For Acne
Tea tree oil is an essential oil that contains certain components that can potentially soothe inflammation and reduce acne lesions.
However, tea tree oil is not necessarily good for acne because there is the potential for allergic reactions or irritation from other components that are less friendly towards the human skin.
Tea tree oil is steam-distilled from the Australian native plant, Melaleuca alternifolia, a name you will most likely find on the ingredient list in products containing tea tree oil.
Tea tree oil has been reported to have broad-spectrum antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties against bacterial, viral, fungal, and protozoal infections affecting the skin and mucosa.
This is due to the high content of a component known as Terpinen-4-ol, which has been linked with antimicrobial and antifungal activity in in-vitro studies .
This essential oil has been used for almost 100 years in Australia after Australian chemist Arthur Penfold first reported the medicinal properties in the 1920s.
Penfolds report served as a part of a larger survey into Australian essential oils, and it had a good economic potential for the country.
Australians went so hard selling the beneficial effects of the tea tree oil to the point where legends say soldiers in World War II were given vials of tea tree oil in their survival kits to help them disinfect and heal their wounds.
But all that aside, what does modern research say? Well, not much, apparently.

Can Spearmint Tea Make Acne Worse
Ive also been asked if spearmint tea can make hormonal acne worse.
As far as I understand, hormonal acne is caused by androgens. So this specific type of regularly occurring acne, caused by your monthly cycle. In that case, any worsening should not be caused by spearmint tea.
But, you might also have acne for completely different reasons! It might be due to some inflammation in your body, some other illness, or some other hormonal imbalance thats not high androgen.
And, who knows, maybe there might be some interaction that causes spearmint tea to make your acne worse. I couldnt find any possible reasons for this, but who knows!
So, again, this is why its super important to try and find the cause for your acne with a medical professional first.

Heavy Metals Fluoride And Thyroid
Tea shrubs and trees naturally absorb several heavy metals through their roots, including lead, aluminum, and mercury.https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3821942/
While these metals can have significant consequences for your health, studies show that the vast majority of teas you can purchase show very low levels of heavy metals after steeping for 3 minutes.https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3821942/
The main concern around tea and acne is fluoride.
Many individuals with adult acne claim going fluoride-free cured their cystic acne. One dermatologist even found that telling his patients not to use toothpaste with fluoride led to fewer pimples around the mouth.https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamadermatology/fullarticle/535073 It also looks like societies with diets naturally low in fluoride have considerably less acne.https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12472346
Why is this?
Well, the main reason is that too much fluoride can lead to thyroid problems, a common cause of stubborn acne. Even a relatively small amount of fluoride found in drinking water seems to be able to significantly impact thyroid hormones. This can lead to hypothyroidism, a condition where the thyroid doesnt make enough thyroid hormone.
Can you guess what one of the primary symptoms of hypothyroidism is?
Thats why iodine is one of the few supplements we actually recommend that most people take.
How To Use Green Tea For Acne
If youre ready to try using green tea for acne, you have several different options. A trial and error approach may be the most beneficial. Keep in mind that theres no specific dosing recommendation in place for using green tea for the skin.
Also, although many at-home treatments have anecdotal evidence to back them up, scientific research has not yet proven them to work. Things to try include:
Green tea mask for acne
- Remove the leaves from one or two tea bags and moisten them with warm water.
- Mix the leaves with honey or aloe vera gel.
- Spread the mixture on the acne-prone areas of your face.
- Leave the mask on for 10 to 20 minutes.
If you prefer your facial mask to have a more paste-like quality, add 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda to the mix, but be mindful that baking soda can strip the skin of its natural oils and may be very irritating.
You can also try placing the tea leaves in a blender or food processor and blending them until they become powder-like.
Apply the green tea mask two times a week.
For a midday pick-me-up, you can drink a cup of iced green tea or add moisture directly to your face using an EGCG-packed green tea facial spritz. Heres one way to make your own:

Both men and women need some testosterone to function, but unlike men, women need significantly less to function optimally. In fact, conditions where women produce too much testosterone, like polycystic ovary syndrome , tend to be linked to higher rates of acne.
The best way to naturally lower testosterone without birth control or hormonal therapy is with a healthy diet. Low-carb diets have been shown to be particularly effective at treating hormonal acne.
Still, drinking mint tea is a good strategy for lowering testosterone and DHT levels in women.https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19585478https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15679984
Start out by drinking a cup or two of high-quality, organic spearmint or peppermint tea per day. Itll probably take some time to see results, but if you think you have hormonal acne due to high testosterone levels, its definitely worth a shot.
What The Research Says
Tea tree oil is known to have antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. As such, it can help reduce the inflammation associated with acne and prevent acne lesions. While its effectiveness in treating acne is widely accepted, tea tree oils effect on scarring is another matter altogether.
Despite the availability of numerous extensive studies conducted on acne and other related skin conditions, research on the effectiveness of tea tree oil in treating acne scars is still lacking. A study conducted in 2015 established that tea tree oil has clear positive effects when used to treat acne. With regard to the oils effect on scarring, however, the findings were not as conclusive. Even so, tea tree oil is thought to reduce the appearance of hypertrophic scars.
Here are other ways in which tea tree oil can help reduce scarring:
It is true that acne scars can often develop below the skins surface. Even so, the use of this essential oil to help prevent active acne breakouts is bound to provide added benefits. At the very least, it might help reduce both the severity of acne and the risk of scarring.
