What Are The Best Treatments For Acne Scars
Luckily, there’s a bevy of gels, creams, and treatments that can bring blemish-induced discoloration down. Dr. Sarkar says that collagen-building ingredients will generally help acne scars, so she looks to retinoids, vitamin C, and alpha hydroxy acids when treating her patients.
“Retinoids, a vitamin A derivative, help to increase collagen, even out skin tone, and prevent future acne,” she explains. “Vitamin C is a brightening agent and an antioxidant, and it has been shown to build collagen as well. Glycolic, lactic, and mandelic acids help to resurface the skin to even out skin tone.”

How Can You Prevent Acne Scars In The First Place
Besides not popping your pimples under any circumstances, what else can you do to prevent acne scars and marks?
It may seem like a no brainer, but the best way to prevent acne scars is by preventing the acne in the first place. Severe cases of acne might require oral antibiotics or Accutane . You might be able to treat mild cases with alternatives, said Dr. Suzanne Friedler, a dermatologist at Mt. Sinai Medical Center inNew York City.
If acne is mild then it may be controlled with topical therapies, including topical antimicrobials and retinoids, Friedler told HuffPost Finds.
Reducing inflammation of existing pimples is key because its those deeper, more cystic spots that tend to leave behind permanent scars, according to Dr. Jeremy Fenton of Schweiger Dermatology Group in New York City.
If youre sensitive to hyperpigmentation, time is of the essence when you have a pimple. Fenton recommended using a targeted dark spot lightening cream when the pimple is at its peak before the discoloration starts.
Are There Any Home Remedies For Acne Scars
Parks tells us that more intense, deeper scars can be tough to remedy at home. But for hyperpigmentation, he says you can try things like rosehip seed oil and aloe vera to help heal the skin, but this isnt guaranteed to help.
Frank warns that some at-home devices like self-microneedling kits can cause more problems than they solve and even cause infections. So, if you want to get your microneedle on, get a pro to do it, hun.

Promising review: “I suffered from cystic acne from around 1922 years old. I decided enough was enough so I saw a dermatologist and got on oral and topical antibiotics. Figure Out What Kind Of Acne Scars You Have
Frank says the color and age of your scars come into play too. So its important to figure out the type of acne scars youre working with and your skin type.
Parks gave us a crash course in acne scar types. Heres what you need to know:
These are flat, shallow depressions that sit beneath the surrounding skin. This type heals below the top layer of skin. These guys are usually thanks to severe cystic acne.
Glycolic acid and salicylic acid are your go-to ingredients here, Parks says, because they help to renew the top layer of skin quicker for fresh, smooth skin.
Usually pretty wide, these box-like depressions typically have some sharply defined edges. Widespread acne all over the face is usually the culprit. These can be difficult to heal, Parks says, and may require treatment from your dermatologist.
Buuuuut the good news here, according to Parks, is that most superficial boxcar scars might see relief from ingredients like retinol and salicylic acid.
Ice pick scars
Here we have smaller, narrower indentations that point down into the skins surface, usually posted up on our cheeks .
Unfortunately, Parks explains, this type of scar wont heal with topical ingredients, so you should talk with your dermatologist about treatments for these scars if you can.
For keloids, he says to look for ingredients like retinol to renew and heal the skin.

What Are Acne Scars Why Do We Get Them
When the skin’s pores get clogged with dirt, bacteria, dead skin cells or impurities, acne tends to form. When our pores get blocked, they swell up and cause the follicle wall of the skin to break, creating both deep and shallow lesions that remain of the skin afterward. These scars are usually a byproduct of inflamed lesions, which penetrate through the skin’s tissue under and leave behind marks. Since acne is an inflammatory condition, its scars have a lot to do with the severity of inflammation as well as its duration, which is why the scars usually differ from time to time as well as person to person. Delaying the treatment of acne can increase the potential risk of scarring, which is why it is best to take action soon.
Acne scarring increases over time, as our skin tends to lose collagen as we grow older. As we all know, collagen plays a vital role in the skin’s healing process. However, after a breakout the skin needs to produce more collagen to repair itself and if it is not enough, it causes a scar to form.
What Kind Of Results Should You Expect From Natural Products
There are numerous tests and studies along with anecdotal evidence that support the use of nearly all the natural ingredients above. When used on their own, these products are remarkably effective.
The best part is that you do not have to give up your regular skin care regimen or anti-acne treatment when using these products. They rarely react negatively with chemical ingredients since they are all natural.
Most of these plant-derived substances have powerful anti-oxidant properties, which not only help to ward off pimples but also keep free radical damage at bay.
Because people with acne prone skin often end up using products that are too harsh, it is not unusual to find them with dry, flaky skin that is sensitive to sun exposure and vulnerable to the signs of aging. In fact, the constant use of chemical products often turns into the bane of youthful looking skin.
However, if you are like me, chances are that your primary concern is to get rid of the ungainly pimples even if it is at the cost of your skin health.
But, if you can get a product that can address the issues of scars and dark spots while keeping your skin soft and healthy, why not?
The most important thing to understand here is that although natural products are quite effective, the results are usually slow in the coming, which can be disheartening at first.

When To Apply Treatments
Frank says that most of the active ingredients used to treat acne scars cause sun sensitivity, which can make scars worse. That means its best to apply them at night: Use a thin layer, starting every other night, and increase with tolerance, he says.
In terms of when to use them in your skin care routine, Frank says active ingredients should always be put on first, after cleansing and always followed by a moisturizer.
But when to apply treatments also depends on the type of product youre using:
- Stand alone acne scar treatments. A stand-alone acne treatment is best applied as a serum step, meaning that it should be applied after cleanser and toner and before moisturizer and oils, Parks tells us.
- Moisturizers. If youre using an all-over moisturizer that has scar-fighting active ingredients, he says to apply after any serums and before any oils.
Frank also suggests cleansing your face the next morning to get rid of any residual product before being exposed to sunlight. And remember to use SPF, friends!
What Is The Difference Between Acne Scars And Marks
Acne marks are usually experienced by those having darker complexions, and they may experience brown marks whereas those with lighter complexions develop purple or red marks called post-inflammatory erythema. These tend to fade faster over time.
On the other hand, scars are deep indentations in the skin which are formed when pimples are picked on. They take longer to heal in comparison to marks and may even be permanent sometimes. In order to completely reduce your scars, medical treatment may be required on certain occasions.

Pmd Personal Microderm Pro A Spinning Disc Vacuum Suction Device That’ll Reduce The Blemishes And Enlarged Pores By Exfoliating Your Skin It’s A Safe And Effective Way To Get An At
Promising review: “I suffered from cystic acne most of my teen years and adult life and at 34, I finally figured out the right combination of medications . Since my focus has always been on skincare products, and I research a lot, you can believe Ive tried most products and brands. PMD did not disappoint. My scars are fading, my skin is brighter , softer, and most importantly, my texture has improved greatly. Scar indentations are not prominent anymore, but they were never too severe. Patience is key. Ive also noticed that my hormonal/sun dark spots are lighter and now I use less concealer. Its so easy to use and such a fast process. Just use it after your shower on a dry face and immediately slap on your favorite toner and moisturizer. The green discs are my go-to because theyre not too coarse, but coarse enough and they dont irritate my skin. Just dont use over acne. Go around it because it will irritate your skin further on an active breakout. Try it!” strawberrieland

How We Chose The Best Products To Get Rid Of Acne Scars
To create this list, we asked dermatologists which products they swear by for the different types of acne scarring.
They took into consideration skin type, efficacy of the products, and any safety concerns patients should be mindful of.
Keep in mind that some scarring can be treated at home, but its best to talk with a dermatologist about severe scarring.

What Are Acne Scars
Most cases of acne scarring are caused by picking or squeezing at the skin during a breakout, which causes inflammation and interrupts the healing process leaving lasting damage to your skin. The type of acne scars youre left with after a breakout is determined by the severity of your acne. It might be red marks, bumps or what seems like holes in your skin that have been left behind. Identify what youve got before you try to treat it.
If youve got red marks that wont shift after a pimple has healed, Dr Martin Wade, Consultant Dermatologist Medical Director of London Real Skin, explains, It is not actually skin pigmentation but rather a red colouration after having acne lesions. This is referred to as Post Inflammatory Erythema . The redness is a result of the inflammation that causes dilation of the blood vessels. It is part of the healing process and can last for months after the lesion is gone.
The bump? That might be due to your bodys immune system trying to heal the area. The small bump remaining could be an increased collagen deposit or scar tissue that has occurred due to the inflammatory nature of the acne lesion. says Dr Wade. If a patient has experienced a very inflamed lesion, it will settle down but can leave a gland, also referred to as a cyst, under the skin.
In cases of severely inflamed lesions, depressed or pitted scars are often left due to the depth of infection. These are the ones that look like holes in the skin.
