Before You Totally Discount Laser Acne
Like basically all other treatment options, lasers cannot completely remove your acne scars. They can only help reduce the appearance of scars and improve your skins texture. But still, lasers offer a straightforward, effective way to make a variety of different types of acne scars less noticeableincluding raised and depressed scars. And there are actually several different types of laser treatments, with some working more gently than others.
For starters, lasers can be ablative or nonablative. Ablative ones create wounds that actually melt or otherwise destroy scar tissue and tighten up the collagen in the skin, while nonablative alternatives promote new collagen production by heating up the skin rather than causing an actual wound. Current thinking holds that ablative lasers are generally more effective for treating all kinds of scars because theyre such an aggressive form of treatment. But they are also undoubtedly harsher and riskier to use in patients of color because the wounds they create also create a greater likelihood of hyperpigmentation during the healing process. In turn, nonablative methodswhich can still be incredibly effectivehave become more popular.
Fractional treatments can be ablative or nonablative, and even though nonablative options will be less invasive and allow for a quicker recovery time, neither are without their risks.
What Is Laser Acne Treatment
During the procedure, the laser passes through the skin, reaching a specific temperature in it and having several effects at the same time:
- First, the beam disinfects the skin, killing microbes that create a favorable environment for acne, pus, skin irritation, and inflammatory processes in its pores
- Then the laser has a drying effect, which helps both get rid of acne and prevent their reappearance and consequences in marks and scars.
- The laser launches the bodys natural defenses, immune processes, restoring the skin from the inside.
- Eliminates redness and visible irritation
- Synthesizes collagen, making the skin smooth, elastic, and taut
What Outcome Can A Person With Acne Scars Expect
Most treatments can reduce the size and visibility of acne scars. With time, many of the treated acne scars fade, making them barely noticeable.
Your results depend almost entirely on the knowledge and skill of the person performing the treatment.
Dermatologists and dermatologic surgeons perform these procedures frequently, so they have the skills and experience needed to perform these procedures safely and effectively.
While dermatologists offer safe and effective treatment for acne scars, there may be a better solution: prevention.

How Do Acne Scars Form
The skin can heal itself from injuries, such as an acne breakout, but the process is often imperfect. Scarring results from collagen fibers replacing cells that cannot grow back or are slow to do so. The scars final form depends on the interplay of various factors.
For example, the following events dictate acne severity and the extent of scarring:
- Stress, hormones, medications, poor hygiene, poor nutrition, etc. can raise ones proneness to pimple formation. These can lead to the following changes in the hair follicles:
- The oil glands become more active.
- Oily secretions change in quality.
- Testosterone-like hormones rise or become more active in the follicles.
- Dead skin cells, oil and debris accumulate in the follicles.
Immune cells wall off the infection and clear it up. Healing begins afterward. The repair mechanisms involved determine the kind of scar produced.
Volume Replacement For Acne Scarring
In many cases, volume loss occurs under the skin as a result of acne, particularly with cystic acne. Replacing volume with dermal fillers can aid in treating scarring.
Dermal fillers are a quick and effective means of replacing volume loss to improve scarring. By injecting these dermal fillers underneath scarring, they help to replace lost volume, and lift the skin towards its normal level.
Alternately, fat can be transferred from the abdomen, hips or thighs, and be injected underneath the areas of scarring. As well as providing additional volume to the area, fat contains stem cells which help in the skin regeneration process. Fat transfer can be combined with skin needling or laser resurfacing in the same session to synergise the treatments.

What Causes The Spots
Inflammation causes the dark spots that remain on skin during the skins healing process.
When your skin is open , and then closes back together, you can get abnormal tone, pigmentation, and even texture.
Sometimes broken blood vessels that remain after an acne lesion fades can cause a red or purple splotch rather than a brown one. These are common in people who have more fair/light skin.
Some acne marks are completely within your control while others are genetically predetermined. People with deeper skin tones are more prone to develop darker marks or hyperpigmentation.
People with lighter skin tones may get more of the redness and purplish post acne markings. There are lifestyle habits that can make dark marks and scars worse.
Sun exposure can get pigment producing melanocytes going, causing marks and scars to darken. Picking or squeezing pimples creates more inflammation which will lead to more pigment issues and scarring.
A special note to those with active body acne and high DHT who dont want to take a DHT oral blocker: High DHT can be lowered by certain bioidentical hormones like progesterone if you dont want to take conventional drugs. It can also be countered topically with shampoos like ketoconazole which is a cutaneous DHT blocker. And there are a host of products to help with both acne and acne scarring. Heres what to look for when scouting out medical treatments.
Cost Of Fillers For Acne Scars
Most fillers are sold per syringe, which usually contains 1 ml or 1.5 ml of filler with the exception of Sculptra, which is sold per vial.
- Sculptra: $700$1,000 per vial
- Juvederm: $500$750 per syringe
- Restylane: $600$800 per syringe
- Radiesse: $600$800 per syringe
- Bellafill: $1,000$1,500 per syringe
For moderate-to-severe scarring, anywhere from 0.54 mL of filler may be used per session. If you opt for Juvederm or Restylane, it would take more as the consistency is thinner than fillers such as Sculptra or Radiesse.
The cost of dermal fillers also varies by geographic location and depends on the fees of your chosen provider. You will also have to factor in the frequency of touch-ups as you will likely need additional treatments to maintain results.

This Is How You Really Get Rid Of Acne Scars
Dr. Caren Campbell, MD, in her San Francisco office
Acne scarring plagues the pores of so many who have long-since recovered from active acne. With the recent advent of laser technology and dermatological research, much progress has been made in understanding how to best care for patients while undergoing treatment and in improving treatment efficacy itself.
I recently discussed the subject with leading San Francisco dermatologist Dr. Caren Campbell, M.D., a physician who has treated many Millennial professionals in the area struggling to remove acne scars. Below, she shares the recent, notable progress that has been made in acne-scarring treatment options, how to know if scars will fade on their own, when to seek medical intervention and the questions to ask your physician.
First, what causes acne scars?
Campbell: Acne scars result from cystic, inflamed acne lesions. When the clogged, inflamed pore ruptures, the skins attempt to repair the broken skin isnt as flawless as the original skin. Depending on the depth of the ruptured pore, varying types of acne scars can be producedatrophic, icepick, boxcar, rolling. When the body overshoots the wound healing response keloids or hypertrophic scars can form, which represent excess scar tissue formation.
Will they ever fade on their own?
What You Can Do At Home:
Dermarolling stimulates collagen production in the skin. The procedure involves piercing the skin using the rollers micro-needles and breaking down fine wrinkles, sun damage, acne spots and some types of acne scars to induce tremendous collagen production. The skin needling treatment recommendation for home use is 0.25 mm to 1.0 mm needles. However, once you know what youre doing you can use the 1.5 mm rollers at home. If you use 1.5 mm needles, youll need skin numbing cream. The numbing creams are also called topical anesthetic creams or ointments. You can find them online, on the same sites you purchase titanium needle rollers.
Dermarolling produces a fresh layer of collagen underneath the epidermis. The newly created collagen layer will thicken the skin and will fill or reduce skin imperfections with varying amounts of treatments. I put this as a home treatment because, for a fraction of what it costs in office, using 2.0 mm needles, you can do this yourself. It is an integral part of my anti aging skincare regimen, and there are lots of Youtube videos to show you exactly how to do it.

Can Natural Remedies Improve Acne Scars
Because acne scars result from changes in the amount and structure of collagen and elastic fibers in the skin, the use of natural remedies such as apple cider vinegar, lemon juice, coconut oil, and other products arent effective in reducing scarring once it develops, says Shah.
She suggests making an appointment with a dermatologist to discuss treatments for existing scars.
Does Excision Work For Acne Scars
For some severe acne scars, such as deep ice pick or boxcar scars, excision can be used to remove the scar, during which the scar is surgically removed and the remaining wound is healed. However, this process of excision has a risk of acne scarring during the healing process. For this reason, Dr. Green only recommends certain acne scars be removed via punch excision over other treatment options. During your consultation, Dr. Green will discuss the most appropriate acne scar treatments based on your type of acne scars, pigmentation, and skin tone.

Correct Minimal Acne Scarring
Laser skin therapy offers advance AFT- IPL laser treatments to correct minimal acne scarring. More aggressive laser procedures such as erbium laser or CO2 fractionated laser are needed when dealing with deeper scars. No matter which laser treatment is chosen, the result is a smoother, more even facial surface where the scars are minimized. Usually, several treatments are needed, but the results of laser skin therapy is long lasting, and the existing acne scars can be eradicated for good.
For deep scarring, surgery may be a practical solution. One surgical procedure called punch excision uses a sharp, round tool matching the size of the hole to remove the scar and then pull the edges of the skin together with stitches. Skin grafting can also be performed on deep scars, and when the 2 procedures are combined, it is called punch grafting. However, with the advances of laser therapy, these methods are rarely necessary anymore.

Acne Scarring: The 6 Best Treatments
Even after you’ve gotten rid of a stubborn pimple, you may be left with an unpleasant reminder in the form of a scar. These scars form when the dermis is damaged, typically from picking at or popping a zit. Acne scars may not be as physically irritating as acne itself, but they can reduce ones confidence and linger for years. Its important to find the best treatment to get rid of those pesky pigmentations as quickly as possible.
Just as there are several effective treatments for acne, there are a number of ways to get rid of acne scars. We wont list every single method, brand, or product here, but we will go over the 6 best treatments for acne scarring.
What Makes Acne Scarring Worse
Your own DNA plays a role in your scars! Your genes determine how well your skin heals, the amount of collagen produced and the depth of the acne lesions also controls the severity of the scars. However, you can make the scarring worse by smoking, squeezing the acne and picking at it. Try to keep your hands away from your face.

Treatment For Hypertrophic Scars
Many patients suffer from keloid scars or hypertrophic scars. These types of scars need to be treated differently from atrophic or depressed acne scars. These hypertrophic scars are raised, and the best treatment involves intra-lesional cortisone injections and laser treatments to shrink these scars. In general, surgically excising or attempting to remove keloid scars, causes them to re-grow, and often larger than before. That is why the best treatment for hypertrophic scars is a a conservative one. If these scars are red, as they often are, especially from surgical scars from breast reductions, face lift, or a tummy tuck, the Vbeam laser treatment will work best to remove this color and return the skin back to its original color.
Efficacy Vs Other Treatments
Efficacy depends on the severity of the scars as well as individual response. Surgical procedures, subcision and microneedling are also effective options as are laser treatments. In a study that reviewed various scar treatments over a 10-year period, researchers found fillers achieved better results compared to microneedling and chemical peels.

What Are Pitted Acne Scars
Pitted acne scars are a name given to acne scars that are characterized by a hollow, indented impression in the skin. This concave appearance is due to a sudden loss of collagen. Unlike hypertrophic scars , which result from an overproduction of collagen, pitted acne scars result from the damage and inflammation of deep breakouts, which create a small pit-like structure on the facehence the name.
According to Camp, pitted acne scars are often categorized based on their appearance, within three common types: boxcar scars, ice pick scars, and rolling scars.
- Boxcar scars: Boxcar scars are broad and have sharp, well-defined edges. A good example is a chicken-pox scar, says Camp.
- Ice pick scars:Ice pick scars are small, narrow, and deep. Because they are deep, they tend to be difficult to treat, Camp explains.
- Rolling scars:Rolling scars are similar to boxcar scars but have smooth, undulating edges that make the skin surface look uneven. They tend to be more shallow, he says.
