Zinc Oxide’s Effect On Acne Bacteria

Acne is, in part, a bacterial disease, and a bacteria called C. acnes is normally found growing within clogged skin pores. C. acnes is thought to lead toward a worsening of inflammation within acne lesions.

So it makes sense that we might learn a bit more about the potential of zinc oxide from how it kills C. acnes bacteria. Studies are preliminary and have only been performed in the lab and not in human skin, so we cannot confidently extrapolate to human skin, but from what the studies show us, zinc oxide, particularly smaller particles – which calamine lotion usually does not contain – may be able to help slow the growth of C. acnes bacteria. Can the larger particles in calamine lotion work as well? More research, and preferably research on human skin, using larger particles of zinc oxide would be needed for us to answer this question more confidently.

Scientists have performed three studies thus far to investigate the antibacterial effect of zinc oxide on C. acnes. In these studies, researchers grew C. acnes bacteria in the lab and then added zinc oxide to see whether this would slow the growth of the bacteria. They found that zinc oxide was moderately successful in slowing the growth of bacteria in the lab.3,4,7 However, it remains to be seen whether a lotion containing zinc oxide would likewise slow down C. acnes growth on human skin.

Studies Of Clindamycin For Acne

Research shows that clindamycin works well. For example, a study from the early 80s involving more than 350 participants found that topical clindamycin produced a reduction in acne lesions over the course of eight weeks of treatment, outperforming a non-therapeutic placebo.

Like many other acne treatments, clindamycin for acne is often used alongside other medications to treat acne from multiple angles.

For example, one study from 2009 found that a combination formula of clindamycin and benzoyl peroxide reduced acne lesion counts and severity over the course of 12 weeks of treatment.

A different study from 2015 also found that a combination of clindamycin and benzoyl peroxide produced large improvements in teenagers and young adults with acne, including a significant reduction in the total number of acne lesions.

Finally, a study from 2019 concluded that a combination of clindamycin and tretinoin produced a continuous improvement in facial acne over the course of 12 weeks of treatment in teenagers and young adults.

In short, clindamycin works very effectively, especially when its used in combination with other acne medications.

Will It Clog Pores

This one is a bit arbitrary because the whole science behind comedogencity is outdated, and relies on data obtained from rabbit ear testing. It doesnt take a rocket scientist to figure out that rabbit skin is not human skin. What clogs poor bunny ears will not always clog human skin.

Theres been several occasions when rabbit ear testing has suggested an ingredient is pore-clogging, only to work perfectly fine on humans. Go figure.

Point being, use the comedogenic scale as a really vague guideline instead of fact. Everyone reacts differently, which is why we should always PATCH TEST. Its the only way to ensure something wont go astray and break our skin out.

Simply test the product out on a small area of skin for a few days, and see if anything happens. See any new breakouts? Clogged pores? That would be an indication that this moisturizer sucks balls for your skin. If you see nothing wrong after a few days or a week, go ahead and use it on your full face.

The takeaway: comedogenic scales arent very accurate, so use them cautiously. And most importantly, make sure to patch test first!

And thats it! Without further ado, lets break down my top 7 list. We will be going over each moisturizer, and seeing how well it fares up against the 3 questions:

  • Will it replenish skin on an acne regimen?
  • Is it moisturizing enough?
  • Will it clog pore?

Can Lacto Calamine Be Used As A Sunscreen

My Drugstore Skincare Routine (for adult acne prone skin ...

The zinc oxide in the lotion does protect against the sun. Whether it provides enough sun protection is not clear as there is no SPF number given on the label. But if you are outside only for 15-20 minutes, Lacto Calamine can be a good zinc oxide based physical sunblock. If most sunscreens break you out, you can try this.

How Can You Treat Acne

Identifying your skin and acne type

The treatment of acne depends on its seriousness. Severe acne will need agressive treatment than lighter ones thus, the need to consult a dermatologist. There are many treatments for acne including cortisone shots, laser therapy, chemical peels, home remedies, prescriptions and over-the-counter medications containing benzoyl peroxide, sulfur, salicylic acid, and others. It would be best to consult a dermatologist first before using any treatments to reduce the risk of further aggravating the acne or to avoid health complications.

Home treatment using medications for acne should only be done based on your dermatologists recommendation. There are lots of great products out there, but if you want something that will really work with less or no side effects to your skin, follow your dermatologists advise.

Acne Treatment With Hydrocolloid Patches

Another form of acne treatment is with hydrocolloid bandages or patches. Hydrocolloid bandages are used to help reduce the size of zits and minimize the appearacne of acne by absorbing the oils and pus from your pimple. While there are pimple patches, sheets of hydrocolloid bandages have proven to work just as well. You are able to apply the whole sheet to the desired area or cut out a piece to fit comfortably on your pimple, this also helps keep you from picking at your zit causing it to become inflammed. Wear it overnight or just for a couple of hours, and you’ll be able to see the bandage go from clear to white spots from all it’s absorbed. Once removed, you’ll notice the pimple has now been flattened out and even reduced in size.

The Science: Studies On Topical Zinc Oxide

We have very little clinical evidence on how well topical zinc oxide works on acne. Just one study that was performed in 2000 and published in the journal Clinical and Experimental Dermatology investigated the effect of the main calamine lotion ingredient, zinc oxide, on acne. In the experiment, a lotion containing both zinc oxide and a separate antiseptic called chloroxylenol, showed good results, but the researchers believe the chloroxylenol likely provided much of the benefit.6 In other words, we currently have no evidence that zinc oxide by itself is effective for treating acne.

Researchers compared the effectiveness of Nels cream, which contains zinc oxide and an antiseptic called chloroxylenol, to that of benzoyl peroxide. Benzoyl peroxide is a medication that is effective at treating acne. To perform this study, the researchers divided the 41 participants into 3 treatment groups. The first group received Nels cream the second group received a 5% benzoyl peroxide cream and the third group received a placebo cream containing neither zinc oxide nor benzoyl peroxide.

    Can Moisturizer Cause Acne

Moisturizing is a very important part of treating acne as moistened skin tends to loosen sebum built up inside pores. Finding a moisturizer for your acne-prone or oily skin can be tough. The same lotion used on your body shouldnt go near your face. We wouldnt even recommend using the same lotion on your neck, chest, back and upper arms since acne tends to occur there as well . When choosing the best moisturizer for acne, steer clear of clogging ingredients like petroleum, mineral oil or silicones like dimethicone, which can cause acne. Its also best to stay away from anything containing alcohol as drying out skin to control oil production will only produce more oil that can lead to inflammation.

No, Curel is very safe for use on various skin types. At most, there is a moderate risk of skin irritation, reddening of eyes, blocked nose, etc. Some of its ingredients, like parabens and fragrances, are feared to cause health problems. These include kidney failure, organ damage, etc.

But this is only a possibility if the lotion is ingested in large amounts. Or, if high concentrations that are beyond regulated quantities are used for a prolonged period.

Instead, opt for moisturizers labeled “oil-free.”

“Dimethicone substitutes for petrolatum in most ‘oil-free’ moisturizers… and can be preferred by patients with acne,” added Dr. Suozzi.

    Cetaphil Moisturizing Lotion Review

My skin tends toward being dry, but I also tend to sweat a lot. Surprisingly, this lotion worked for me. I had some trouble figuring out how much to use in the beginning, but then I figured out that a little can go a long way. My skin feels moisturized throughout the day, and its texture has improved to be more soft and smooth.

The product promises to bind moisture skin to keep it hydrated and soothed, and thats exactly what it does. What I like best is that the Cetaphil moisturizing lotion is completely fluff-free and does not mention any special ingredients or properties. It is formulated to simply hydrate your skin, and it completely delivers on its claims.

I also noticed that the blackheads on my nose have visibly reduced about two weeks into using Cetaphil moisturizing lotion on my face.

If I could change one thing about this product, I would add SPF to it so that I dont have to use a sunblock over it.

I had a friend with cystic acne try out the product with me and she seems to have liked it as much as I did, if not more. She was already using the Cetaphil cleanser and while the lotion did not clear out her skin, it has definitely kept it hydrated without causing any breakouts. The non-comedogenic claim is not just a claim and definitely comes through.

Seeing how she had been having a lot of issues with her skin, Im pretty sure that the lotion is going to stay on her shelf for a while.
