What Is Good For Acne On Your Face

How Do Face Masks Cause Acne And Skin Damage

How to wash your face properly to avoid acne- by Dr. Liv

Skin damage from wearing masks usually affects healthcare workers. But now that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend everyone wear masks in public, we are all at risk.

There are three main ways masks cause breakouts:

  • Rubbing: Masks can cause irritation through friction and chafing, almost like rug burn. The areas most at risk are the bridge of the nose and where elastic bands hit behind the ears. Over time, tightly fitting masks can put enough pressure on the skin to cause it to breakdown.

  • Irritation: The material of a mask absorbs the skins natural oils. For some people, this leads to dryness and sensitivity. Residue from detergents and fabric softeners also gets stuck underneath the mask and can cause irritation. When irritation becomes inflammation, you see redness, dry patches, peeling, or dark marks. If you have a skin condition like rosacea or psoriasis, the inflammation can make it flare.

  • Occlusion: Occlusion from a mask also causes issues. Pores get clogged and can become pimples or acne cysts. Your breath trapped beneath the mask makes the skin surface warm and moist. Besides regular acne, this environment can lead to a breakout called folliculitis, which is when yeast or bacteria infect hair follicles.

Are Acne Face Washes Worth It

If youre dealing with pimples, then yes, an acne-prone face wash is worth investing in because non-acne face washes might contain pore-clogging or acne-causing ingredients like oils, according to Garshick. She added that your favorite hand soap isnt a worthwhile alternative to an acne face wash because hand soap is typically formulated to remove pesky bacteria which might cause dryness or irritation if used on your face.

Overall, medical experts say that an acne face wash is an effective at-home skin care product, but visible results wont happen overnight. Ortiz said regardless of what anti-acne treatments you use, itll take about four to six weeks to see a noticeable difference in your skin. Beyond being patient, you might experience skin purging, which is when the pimples come to the surface and clear house.

While purging is normal, Ortiz noted some patients will get discouraged by the acne flare ups, which is actually a sign the acne products are working. Most patients will start a product for acne, and then notice that they’re getting worse, and then they stop right when they are about to get better, she said. And because those patients stop their routine due to purging, they have to restart the skin care regime again, Ortiz noted. So if youre incorporating an acne face wash into your skin care routine, be diligent and patient before giving up on your skin care journey.

Lemon for Acne

It is a myth that women get acne because they don’t wash enough. Too much washing or scrubbing the skin harshly can make acne worse. And washing away surface oils doesn’t do much to prevent or cure acne, because it forms under the skin. The best way to clean the face is to gently wash it twice a day with a mild soap or cleanser. Be careful to remove make-up without harsh scrubbing.

Dont Overdo Face Washing

It may seem intuitive that washing your face more can help get rid of those pesky zits and blackheads, but you may just make things worse.

Remember to not over-wash as this can strip away the natural oils from your skin and sometimes leave your skin feeling tight, red and dry, Dr. Thompson said. Instead, just stick to washing in the morning, at night and after you sweat.

Dont Over Examine Your Skin

Warning: Objects may be larger than they appear. Be careful with mirrorsespecially those over-magnified makeup mirrors.

No ones skin looks normal with this degree of magnification, Dr. Thompson said. These types of mirrors often lead people to spend more time picking, squeezing and damaging their skin.

Applying Coconut Oil To Your Skin Can Moisturize It And Help With Healing

Many people with acne suffer from skin damage, which can lead to scarring.

Moisturizing your skin is an important step in keeping it healthy. Thats because it needs adequate moisture to fight infection and heal properly .

Research shows that applying coconut oil to skin can help relieve dry skin while fighting bacteria .

In fact, studies show that using coconut oil as a moisturizer is as effective or more effective than using mineral oil .

Additionally, coconut oil may help heal your skin and prevent it from scarring.

In one study, rats with wounds treated with coconut oil experienced less inflammation and increased production of collagen, a major skin component, promoting wound healing (

As a result, their wounds healed much faster.

Keeping your skin moisturized may reduce the risk of developing acne scars .

The fatty acids in coconut oil may also fight acne-induced inflammation.

Multiple test-tube and animal studies have demonstrated the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of coconut oil .

These findings suggest that eating coconut oil may help reduce the redness and swelling of inflammatory acne. However, this effect needs to be confirmed in studies including humans.

Eating coconut oil isnt problematic for most people.

However, some people apply it directly to the skin as a facial cleanser or moisturizer.

This may be beneficial against acne, but its not recommended for people who have very oily skin.

Try A Product With Salicylic Acid

If your breakouts are frequent and you’re tired of battling them, you may want to consider switching up your skincare routine. “Pick a cleanser that has salicylic acid in it, which you can get over the counter,” Dr. Peredo recommends. “Those with acne-prone skin may need an astringent to degrease the skin, too I like salicylic or glycolic acid, because they can help with the scarring that could occur, as well.” Try La Roche-Posay Effaclar Medicated Gel Cleanser for Acne Prone Skin, made with 2% salicylic acid along with lipo hydroxy acid, which also exfoliates and helps reduce oil production.

“Salicylic acid is also very potent when it comes to getting rid of blackheads it helps by removing dead cells and excess oil from the surface of the skin,” Dr. Zeichner says. Another way to bust blackheads is using a vitamin A derivative, like adapalene, which is the main ingredient in dermatologist-favorite Differin Gel. “Think of it like a pipe cleaner for your pores, to keep them clear so oil does not get trapped,” he explains.

Are Essential Oils Bad For Acne Clearing Up Some Misconceptions

Many believe that treating oily skin with an oil-based product is counterproductive.

In reality, its not. Essential oils actually replace and remove the greasy and oily acne-causing compounds in your skin, so your body no longer has to take excessive measures to produce oil. As a result, the unsightly, oily shine that develops on your face throughout the day is diminished thanks to essential oils.

Best of all: you dont need a prescription for essential oils, and you dont need to visit a pharmacist to buy something over the counter. Just check out the health section of your grocery store, or shop online at Public Goods for essential oils.

People who wear hats often develop scalp acne because of pore blockage and contaminants. Throwing your hats in the wash more frequently, cleansing the area your hat touches like the hairline, and taking breaks from hat-wearing can help prevent scalp acne.

You should also wash your hair after every exercise and whenever it begins to feel oily, says Courtney Rubin, MD, board-certified dermatologist and co-founder and chief medical officer at Fig 1. Additionally, avoid picking at the acne on the scalp and hairline, even though it could be tempting. This can potentially lead to scarring, hair loss, skin discoloration, and the spread of bacteria, she says.

Maintaining a frequent wash schedule if your hair is greasy, washing your hats, cleansing the face and skin near the scalp are all great ways to make sure the skin is clear and prevent scalp acne. How Is Acne Diagnosed

Your healthcare provider can diagnose acne during a skin exam. They may also ask if youre undergoing significant stress or if you have a family history of acne, all of which are risk factors. Teenage girls and women may also be asked about their menstrual cycles, as breakouts are sometimes related. Sudden, severe acne outbreaks in older people can sometimes signal another underlying disease that requires medical attention.

Keep Your Hands Off Your Face

All dermatologists agree that you should never, ever pick at your pimple. We repeat: Do not pick at your pimple. “It may seem tempting, but remember that once you’ve picked at an acne lesion, it will take longer to heal and is more likely to scar,” warns Doris Day, M.D., a dermatologist in NYC and author of 100 Questions and Answers About Acne.

And other derms agree, especially when trying to get rid of a pimple overnight. “Whatever you do, don’t pick your pimple before bed,” says Joshua Zeichner, M.D., Director of Cosmetic & Clinical Research in Dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in NYC. “When you are tired you will inevitably cause more harm than good.” Trust us on this one.
