While back acne can be irritating, painful and embarrassing, various treatments and lifestyle changes relieve this common skin problem.

Choose The Right Body Moisturiser

You don’t have to give up the moisturiser to keep breakouts at arms length – just make sure you choose the right one – that means ditching the thick creams.

‘Applying a moisturiser will soothe and repair your skin barrier, but make sure that any products you leave on your skin are labelled ‘non-comedogenic,’ advises Dr. Kluk. ‘This means that they wonât clog your pores.’

It’s also important to be aware of oils. ‘Some oil based products can cause acne, switching to âlighterâ creams is beneficial. Benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, glycolic acid containing products are recommended treatments,’ explains Dr Danso.

  • Hormones: A common cause is puberty or any hormonal change or a familial genetic predisposition.
  • Perspiration: Pressure on the back combined with excessive sweating, poor hygiene, and closed coverage of the skin without “breathing,” can result in back acne.
  • Bacteria: High growth levels of bacteria on the skin can be a culprit, which can occur on the face or body.
  • Steroids: Another force at work could be steroid usage. With increased androgen levels from steroids, the sebaceous glands on the skin secrete more oils. This is most common on the back and shoulders or chest than the face.

How Do You Get Rid Of Back Acne Overnight

While there is no magic cure for back acne, there are methods that can be implemented to reduce the severity. Washing your face with a gentle cleanser and applying spot treatment can be very effective. Additionally, a warm compress helps reduce swelling, which in turn, makes blemishes less noticeable.

Does Testosterone Cause Back Acne

Excessive testosterone and cortisol levels can both lead to an increase in acne and back acne. It is because they both contribute to the production of sebum – oil produced by glands within the pores of your skin.

Sebum isnt all bad. Its actually designed to remove dead skin cells away from hair follicles. However, having high levels of testosterone and cortisol can cause these glands to become overactive. This causes the glands to produce too much sebum, which blocks the pores and results in bacne.

How To Get Rid Of Back Acne

The surface area on the back is considerably larger than the face. It is also harder to reach, obviously. We can wash our face multiple times a day whenever we feel the need to. But same cannot be done with this area of the body.

Treating back acne although difficult, it is still very similar to the treatment of acne on other areas of the body.

Along with my acne on my face, I have experience bouts of acne on my upper back and chest. I still do. When they do pop up, I find a mask and body exfoliation gets the job done for me.

  • Wear Breathable Fabrics: Always look for workout clothes that have sweat-wicking capabilities. You can find plenty of sports apparel that helps wick the sweat away from your skin. Ladies, be sure to steer clear of cotton sports bras they can trap the sweat to your skin and lead to breakouts.
  • Shower Immediately: The sooner you can take off those sweaty clothes and hop into the shower the better. The longer the sweat and bacteria sits on your skin, the more likely you are to break out.
  • A Change of Clothes: If you take part in long workouts that contain both cardiovascular and strength training portions, change outfits between the two. It may seem like a pain, but it can make a huge difference. If you can, wipe down in the locker room before throwing on that fresh shirt. Getting as much sweat off as you can before beginning your strength training routine will help you combat that tenacious bacne.

Why Does Acne Occur On The Back

Like the chest and face, the back has a high density of sebaceous glands. These produce sebum, a waxy substance that keeps the skin healthy.

Sebaceous glands are attached to hair follicles, or pores. If sebum or dead skin cells clog a pore, it can cause a blockage. This blockage may lead to inflammation or trap bacteria in the pore. This is how acne lesions develop.

A type of yeast, Malassezia, can also cause lesions that look similar to acne. The yeast tends to overgrow in humid, sweaty environments. Because the back is often covered by clothing, backpacks, slings, and other thing, it can be an ideal environment for this microbe. If the yeast gets into the hair follicles, it can cause a condition known as pityrosporum folliculitis. And if antibacterial treatments have not worked for back acne, the person may have pityrosporum folliculitis instead.
