Oysters Benefits For The Skin
Zinc-rich foods are great for helping to reduce spotty skin and oysters are one of the best sources around.
Our bodies store almost 6% of total body zinc levels in the skin.13 This essential micronutrient is involved in a large number of cellular processes.
It plays an important role in skin health, supporting the following processes that are key to healthy skin:14
- Cell division
- Omega-3 metabolism
- Building keratin
Collagen and keratin are both essential for building and maintaining healthy skin, and without adequate levels of zinc, the body can struggle to synthesise them.
If you dont like oysters you could try to increase your zinc intake by eating mushrooms, beef, lamb, pork or pumpkin seeds instead.
Is There A Correlation Between Food And Breakouts
All of that said, we cant talk about acne without talking about food. Diet matters. In fact, certain foods can promote inflammation throughout the body, thus triggering acne outbreaks. While the current research only detects an association between diet and acneand not a causationtheres still plenty of anecdotal evidence to suggest the correlation between food and breakouts. Most of us have been there: We eat more processed or sugary foods than normal, and two days later, we wake up with blemishes.
Interestingly, a relatively new study found a correlation between the chances of having acne and the consumption of the following foods:
- High-fat foods
- Sugary foods and beverages
To summarize: a higher intake of high-fat, high-sugar foods was associated with a higher incidence of acne. That said, its important to note that dietary records can be faulty. Its also possible that other factors were at play as well .

Risks And Side Effects
While you can begin by tackling hormonal acne on your own at home, you may want to visit a dermatologist if your condition is reoccurring or worsening. Your doctor/dermatologist can help pinpoint any underlying conditions that might be contributing to our breakouts, such as PCOS, high testosterone or cortisol levels, a thyroid condition, or another hormone issue.
If the treatments above dont seem to be doing enough to reduce your breakouts, speak with your dermatologist about other options such as antiandrogen drugs, which block androgen receptors to decrease the actions and effects of testosterone, or stronger topical prescriptions to fight acne-causing bacteria.
When treating hormonal acne yourself, theres potential to experience some side effects depending on the specific products and treatments you use. Some topical products might cause dry, red, flaky, painful skin at first, so make sure to follow directions, and remember that less may be more when it comes to improving your skins appearance.
If you have sensitive skin, such as eczema, dermatitis or rosacea, some products, such as retinoids and certain cleaners, may be too harsh. Certain products are also not safe when youre pregnant, so get your doctors advice if this applies to you.

The link between sugary foods and acne has been illustrated by various studies.
The glycemic index indicates how quickly a food will be processed and metabolized into glucose. Foods with a high glycemic index include but are not limited to white rice, white and wheat bread, sweetened snack foods, and some fruits.
When ones body processes a high glycemic load, the insulin that is created can stimulate androgens, which leads to increased production of sebum. This in turn can contribute to the development of acne.
