Cut Down Sugar From Your Diet
Sugar is one of the major culprits that promote inflammation. High sugar intake coming from a diet based on white bread, sweets, white rice, pasta, etc. increases your insulin levels. The whole process of digesting these sugars triggers a hormonal cascade in your body leading to inflammation and acne. Stay away from sugar as much as possible and opt for foods that have lower glycemic index. Moreover, reach for complex carbs such as those found in sweet potato, whole wheat, wild rice, etc.
Erins Journey To Get Clear Skin
Most of my life I was a makeup kind of gal because I didnt have good skin. It was sensitive, prone to breakouts, and splotchy. I tried every cleanser, soap, mask, and more to try and tame my face, shoulders, and arms, yet nothing worked.
After trying one of Jens green smoothie recipes, I was intrigued, but a total newbie. Yet its amazing how quickly I changed:
- I swore Id never drink a green smoothie without dairynow I use water or almond milk as the base.
- Then I said Id never blend kale now I literally have a 4×4 ft container garden of kale. Thats 18 kale plants that I treat like my own offspring!!!
- Finally, I said Id never leave the house without makeup. These days, youll only find me in makeup on date night. Why? Because I discovered the secret of the clear skin diet, and Im never going back.

What Is Acne And Why Do You Get It
Most of us have been there: Among our peers at school or at work, suddenly dealing with an eruption of embarrassing blemishes that appeared out of nowhere as if on a mission to steal our confidence.
Acne is a skin condition in which pores usually on your face, chin, chest, or back become blocked.
So, what causes acne?
The sebaceous glands of your skin create an oily substance called sebum. An overabundance of sebum, in cahoots with an overgrowth of normal skin cells called keratinocytes, can clog your pores.
Both of these substances can promote excessive amounts of the bacteria that normally live on your skin, which can compound the problem.
Pores dont like to be clogged. And when they are, the skin around them becomes red and irritated. This results in what we see as pimples, blackheads, and whiteheads.
But, what causes your skin to make the sebum and keratinocytes that clog your pores in the first place?
Both male and female bodies make hormones called androgens, which are known to trigger the production of both keratinocytes and oily sebum. Androgens increase during puberty, and womens bodies also produce more of them during and after pregnancy, as well as with oral contraceptive use.
But above all else, the food you eat seems to be the biggest factor in fueling, or fighting, acne.
Keep Your Cell Phone Clean
Another small simple change that can make a world of a difference. Like touching your face, cell phones are not the cause of acne, but they can potentially make acne worse due to the presence of bacteria on your mobile device, experts say.
Be sure to wipe down your phone daily to avoid unnecessary bacteria from getting onto your skin and contributing to cystic acne.

Fake Cheese Is The Worst
I was really dreading cutting out dairy. BecauseI love dairy. Cheese was a regular part of my diet .
But because I wanted acne-free skin so badly, I forced myself to make it work. And after a few weeks, I discovered that the foods I was eating werent so bad. Heres an example of a day in my diet:
- Breakfast: Instead of my usual latte and Greek yogurt, Id eat eggs with smoked salmon and capers on an English muffin with an English Breakfast tea.
- Lunch: Instead of adding cheese to my soup or sandwich, Id go without. Or Id try takeout from Asian and Mediterranean restaurants, where the cuisine isnt so focused on dairy.
- Dinner: This was the easiest meal to tweak, because I found that coconut milk did a good job at replacing cows milk. I discovered a dairy-free, creamy smoked salmon pasta recipe that called for coconut milk and nutritional yeast instead of heavy cream, and I could barely taste the difference between the dairy-based and dairy-free alternative.
The hardest part: eliminating cheese. There arent a lot of great alternatives. Yes, there are soy- and nut-based cheeses available on the market, but theyre either too hard to find or just taste weird and rubbery. I usually preferred to just order pizza without the cheese than to get one that had the fake stuffthats how much I dislike cheese substitutes.

Swap Sugary Drinks For Water Or Green Tea
Sweetened drinks, specifically sodas, tend to be loaded with sugar were talking up to 30 grams of sugar per serving.
Avoid blood sugar spikes by switching out that can of soda every day for an 8-ounce glass of water.
If you need an energy boost and a little more flavor, try making some green tea. To subdue a sweet tooth, consider addinghoneyas a sweetener instead of sugar.
Studies show thatpolyphenols found in green teacan reduce the sebum produced by the sebaceous glands perfect for preventing and treating hormonal acne.

My 30 Day Reset And Transformation
Two years ago, I learned about The Whole30, a diet where you only eat whole, unprocessed foods. The goal is to help you discover food sensitivities and improve health. I originally decided to take on this diet to get to the bottom of some stomach aches that plagued me. I was eating mostly what I thought of as healthy foods , but they were still affecting me.
Magic happened during this month of eating whole, unprocessed foods. I made another fascinating discovery as I reintroduced the foods Id eliminated. A day after having some cream in my coffee and cheese with my dinner, I could feel a deep infection beginning to form around my chin and decided to do some research. Over the next few hours, I pored over articles and studies, first about the relationship between acne and dairy, and then the relationship between acne and food.
I found largest studies , researchers asked 47,355 women to recall their dietary habits and the severity of their acne in high school. Those who reported drinking two or more glasses of milk per day were 44 percent more likely to have suffered from acne. Suddenly everything made perfect sense.
Of course my skin reflects the quality of the things I put in my body. It may have taken far longer than 30 days for my skin to clear up completely, but those 30 days gave me the freedom to understand the relationship between my diet and body.
Cystic Acne Whats The Cause
Cystic acne is basically caused by too much inflammation and hormonal imbalances in the body.
It is formed when the skin reacts to a cascade of hormonal fluctuations by causing its oil glands to overproduce oils.
Because of this, the oil glands get swollen with excess oils, then become inflamed and eventually burst, leading to infection and pus-filled bumps beneath the skins surface.

Trying To Extract Cystic Acne At Home Will Only Make It Worse
Dr. Braue has stressed this a number of times so its worth repeating dont mess with cystic acne. It doesnt matter if youve watched hours of pimple extraction videos. If you need an area drained, leave that to a professional.
Picking or popping cystic acne can lead to scarring and that can lead to dyspigmentation. Also, when you do this, not everything comes out and you end up spreading some of the inflammation around which isnt ideal either. If youre considering draining an acne cyst at home, I definitely dont encourage it.

Can You Pop Cystic Acne
Cystic acne is the most severe type of acne. Like other types of acne, you shouldn’t try to squeeze out a cyst in order to pop it. But there are things you can do at home that can help work the cyst out from deep in your skin so it comes out on its own. This process takes time, so be patient as you await the results.
Eat For Optimal Blood Sugar Control
Avoiding blood sugar fluctuations by following a low-glycemic-index diet to control acne is one theory that has gained momentum in the science world.
The glycemic index is a measure of how slowly or quickly a food spikes your blood sugar levels.
Choosing foods with a high GI, such as soda, white bread, candy, sugary cereals, and ice cream, cause dramatic fluctuations in blood sugar and can exacerbate acne .
Eating sugary foods increases levels of insulin, which is a hormone that shuttles sugar out of your blood and into your cells where it can be used for energy. This stimulates the release of other hormones, such as insulin-like growth factor 1 .
This increase in hormones leads to hyperkeratinization and excess sebum production, which can worsen acne (
Therefore, cutting out sugary foods and beverages, as well as refined carbs, such as white pasta, pastries, and white bread, may improve your acne symptoms.

Who Gets Cystic Acne
Cystic acne is most likely to appear in teens, but this is not always the case. There have been reports of the cysts appearing in children as young as 8 years old, as well as in older adults. In the older population, it is more likely to appear in men, but women get it too. Different people get cystic acne for different reasons.
What Doesnt Cause Cystic Acne
You have probably heard that certain foods cause acne, so you might be wondering what foods cause cystic acne? or does dairy cause cystic acne?
Unfortunately, there are a lot of myths and confusion out there about what causes cystic acne and what doesnt. So, I wanted to clear up some confusion about certain things that do not have a proven correlation to acne.
Here are some cystic acne causes that have not been proven:
- not washing face often enough
Now, its true that eating healthy is good for your body and your skin, but having pizza for dinner tonight is not going to make your face breakout.

Bacteria & Oil Buildup
Cystic acne is the result of a buildup of bacteria and sebum, but this does not occur because someone doesnt wash their face enough. Instead, cystic acne can be triggered by other environmental factors, including the products we use on our skin.
Wearing makeup or tight clothing for long periods of time can exacerbate cystic acne by trapping moisture, sweat, and oil.
Effective Acne Treatment Includes Skin Care And Medication
While diet may play a role in causing your breakouts or worsening your acne, keeping your skin clear requires more than a diet change. Using acne friendly skin care and acne medication helps to prevent new breakouts.

Is Apple Cider Vinegar Good For Cystic Acne
Because ACV contains acetic acid, malic acid, and lactic acid, which are often used in skin care products, natural healers often suggest using ACV as a cystic acne treatment to help exfoliate dead skin and kill bacteria. Although ACV does contain acids that can be effective in treating acne, studies are inconclusive.

Struggling To Cook Healthy Meals At Home
Forks Meal Planner is here to help.
We tried everything, including top dermatologists, antibiotics, special facials, blue light therapy, and prescription skincare products. The doctors we saw all eventually recommended the powerful acne medication Accutane, since the acne wasnt responding to any other treatment. We had friends who had taken Accutane, so we knew about its reputation for bad side effects and wanted to avoid using it if possible. We were raised vegan, ate healthy, and already didnt eat dairy , so we mostly didnt think our diet could be causing our breakouts.
We were at a loss for what to do until our father suggested that we look at research by Dr. John McDougall. Years ago, our mother had been cured of an autoimmune disease after following Dr. McDougalls advice, so we already trusted him and knew he was capable of doing the impossible. We immediately read this article and took notice of a few of his points, including this:
Multiple studies of people living on their traditional native dietsalmost all of which are low-fat diets have found these people have little or no acne.
He went on to say that it does not take much fat on the skin to plug the pores, feed the bacteria, and cause acne in susceptible people.

What These Research Findings Mean For You
While more research is needed to know whether certain foods can worsen acne, there is something that you can do right now if you think your diet affects your acne.
Dermatologists recommend that you pay attention to your breakouts, and ask yourself these questions:
Does any food or beverage seem to trigger a breakout or worsen your existing acne?
If something seems to trigger a breakout, what happens when you dont have that food or beverage for a day, a week, or a month?
