What Causes Small Acne Bumps On Face

Are Bumps Ever A Sign Of Something Serious

Why those tiny bumps ARENT fungal acne!

Most of the time your bumps are nothing to worry about, but they can be a sign of something more serious. For instance, skin cancer can sometimes present as a bump or pimple-like lesion called nodular melanoma. If you get a raised bump that wont go awayespecially if its asymmetrical, multicolored, or unevenly borderedits time to call the dermatologist. Dont ignore a bump like this. If caught early, melanoma is highly treatable through surgical removal, but in its later stages, it can be deadly.

Other, more serious conditions of the skin include staph infections, bacterial infections, basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, allergic reactions, and shingles. If you worry you may have a significant medical condition, dont hesitate to speak to your doctor.

What Are Skin Growths

Skin growths are bumps on the face, neck, and body. They are usually benign and often begin as small flat or rough bumps. At first, these growths might be mistaken for clogged pores or breakouts, but they will never come to a head and cannot be extracted since there is no oil in them. Treating them with harsh, breakout-focused products will only result in dry, irritated skin.

They typically start to appear around age 35 and become more numerous as we age. Over time, skin growths get thicker and larger, eventually turning into skin tags or a number of other skin conditions, including seborrheic keratoses, hyperkeratosis, actinic keratoses , and sebaceous hyperplasia, to name a few.

As you can see in the picture above, they can either be flesh-colored or darker than your skin tone. They can also assume a number of different shapes and textures. Skin growths are generally made up of excess skin or enlarged oil glands and appear as raised bumps that are impossible to hide with makeup.

As I mentioned, most of the skin growths I discuss here are benign. I have gotten many of these and my dermatologist has always confirmed this to be true. That said, its very important to keep an eye out for anything new or changing. Always schedule regular skin checks with your dermatologist. When in doubt, always get it checked out!

People with acne or acne-prone skin should look for oil-free, noncomedogenic sunscreens, says Yoram Harth, MD, a dermatologist and the medical director of MDacne in San Francisco. “Heavier” sunscreens, which arent labeled as oil-free, can clog the skin pores and cause more acne, he says.

Should I Squeeze Or Pop My Pimples

Popping pimples can be very tempting and satisfying. However, its best if you dont squeeze or pop your pimples. Squeezing pimples can cause several problems, including:

  • Introducing bacteria into the pimple opening. Bacteria can cause an infection.
  • Irritating your skin. Your skin is sensitive, and your nails are much stronger than your skin. When you use your nails to apply a lot of pressure to your skin to pop a pimple, you can cause inflammation. Pimple-popping tools can also damage your skin. Only a healthcare provider, medical aesthetician or dermatologist should use these tools.
  • Scarring your skin. You can draw blood and seriously damage your skin if you apply too much pressure. If pimples are deep in your skin, you may not even extract them.

Hairstyling Products That Touch Your Skin Can Contribute To Acne

Santi Nunez/Stocksy

Breakouts caused by hair-care products are so common that theres a name for them: pomade acne.

Styling products seep oil onto the forehead, which can trap acne-causing bacteria in your pores, says Richard Fried, MD, PhD, the director of Yardley Dermatology Associates in Yardley, Pennsylvania, and the author of the book Healing Adult Acne.

Clogged pores become inflamed, resulting in redness, pus, and ultimately blackheads and whiteheads along the hairline and forehead.

Small Bumps On Face Not Pimples

The white bumps on the face are not acne!

These small bumps on face not being pimples can either of the following:

  • Acne
  • It occurs when the pores on the skin become blocked with oil, dead skin, or bacteria since the follicle is made up of a hair and a sebaceous gland. The oil gland releases sebum , which travels up the hair, out of the pore, and onto the skin. A zit appears when bacteria grow in a clogged pore and the oil is unable to escape.

  • Warts
  • They are raised bumps on the skin caused by the human papillomavirus . They are generally not dangerous, they are ugly, potentially embarrassing, contagious, and they can be painful. Flat warts usually grow on the face, thighs, or arms. They are small and not immediately noticeable. They can be pink, brownish, or slightly yellow.

  • Chickenpox
  • It is a virus that often affects children. It is characterized by itchy, red small bumps on face and blisters that appear all over the body. It is very rare to have the chickenpox infection more than once. A rash is the most common symptom of the chickenpox and it is more contagious several days before the rash develops and will experience other symptoms.

  • Neurofibromatosis
  • It is a genetic disorder characterized by the growth of tumors on the nerves. The disease can also affect the skin and cause bone deformities. VRD affects the skin and the peripheral nervous system. Most cases of VRD are the result of a genetic mutation in the neurofibromin gene there are also acquired cases due to spontaneous mutations.

    How To Treat It

Begin using active ingredients like benzoyl peroxide and/or salicylic acid. is commonly recommended by dermatologist to treat acne. It acts as an effective antibacterial treatment that delivers oxygen into your pores unclogging them and killing bacteria. Salicylic acid acts as an anti-inflammatory agent and promotes the shedding of dead skin cells. Try using our original with benzoyl peroxide. Remember, skincare takes time so be patient and whatever you do, dont pick at your skin!

    Staph Infections Can Mimic Acne

Staph infections are caused by staphylococcus bacteria. These germs are usually harmless and normally found on the skin of healthy people, but can cause infection if they find their way into open cuts or scratches.

Dr. Soni told Insider that staph infections often cause pimple-like boils, bumps, and redness that can be easily mistaken for acne. Unlike normal pimples, staph infections can process to pus-filled blisters or large patches of irritated skin.

Though most staph infections are minor and will clear up on their own, some can lead to life-threatening conditions such as septicemia or an infection of the inner lining of the heart. If you suspect you have a staph infection or have a skin lesion that isn’t getting better, head to your doctor for a diagnosis.

How To Get Rid Of Closed Comedones

    • Clean Your Pores Through Manual Extraction. Ideally, you would see an experienced esthetician for a deep-pore cleansing facial with extractions. The key to successfully removing closed comedones is to pierce them with a lancet so the blockage can pop out of the skin. You can remove them at home, but it has to be done correctly. Follow these tips to safely remove closed comedones at home.
    • Use Exfoliating Acids. Once your pores are clean, start using a serum with salicylic acid . Since its oil-soluble, it can penetrate the pore lining better than other types of acids. I highly recommend the BHA Clarifying Serum.
    • Use Retinoids . While I dont recommend retinoids for inflammatory breakouts, they can be a good option for clogged pores. Thats because they speed up cell turnover, helping to keep pores clear. If you decide to go this route, read my beginners guide to retinoids to avoid unwanted side effects.
    • Dont Use Harsh Acne Products. Traditional breakout-focused products use strong ingredients that can leave behind loads of dry skin cells on the skins surface. This can trap impurities and lead to even more clogged pores over time . Swap overly drying products with gentle exfoliants and hydrating products. It will make a world of difference.

How To Get Rid Of Skin Growths

What Is This White Bump on My Face?

Skin growths tend to thicken over time, so its best to have them removed early on while theyre still manageable. Always have them checked and removed by a dermatologist. Dont try to get rid of them yourself. In my experience, some dermatologists may not want to remove benign growths since they arent life-threatening. If they do remove them, you may want to have your doctor remove just one to see how your skin heals. The method of removal will depend on the type of growth, but common methods include cryotherapy, electric cauterization, and manual removal with a scalpel.

Watch this video of me having my skin growths removed via electric cauterization.

Theres one more thing I want to mention. Since many of these growths are caused by a thickening of the skin, regularly using both exfoliating acids and retinol will help minimize their formation. UV damage can also be an underlying cause, so youll want to wear SPF every single day!

How To Get Rid Of Milia

Milia often resolve on their own and there is no medical reason to treat milia. Don’t try to extract them at home, but you can help speed up their disappearance.

One recommended at-home regimen for clearing up milia is to give yourself an at-home facial. Start by washing your face with a gentle soap. Rinse well then pat your face dry. Next, steam your face for 5 to 8 minutes then rinse with lukewarm water.

Exfoliating can also help milia resolve. Keep in mind that exfoliating can be harsh on delicate facial skin and should not be done too often. Try exfoliating once a week with a product that contains citric acid, glycolic acid, or salicylic acid.

If these at-home milia treatments do not work or you want faster results, see a dermatologist. Topical retinoids are also commonly prescribed to treat these white bumps. In addition, a dermatologist may be able to manually extract milia using special tools.
