Is Vitamin C Good For Acne

What Is The Extent Of Vitamin Cs Benefit For Acne

Vitamin C serum for acne prone skin

Sodium ascorbyl phosphate , a precursor to vitamin C, has been shown to be effective in treating acne by acting both as an antioxidant and as an antimicrobial agent.

One study demonstrated the efficacy of 5% SAP cream used daily, with a majority of subjects showing significant improvement of their acne, with little to no side effects. In this study, 76.9% of patients ranked this creams efficacy as excellent or good, a higher ranking than a prescribed acne treatment of benzoyl peroxide. The results indicate that vitamin C is an effective acne treatment for a wide variety of patients.

Another study found sodium L-ascorbyl-2-phosphate , a derivative of vitamin C, to be an effective acne treatment on its own, providing a statistically significant decrease of both inflammatory and noninflammatory acne lesions.

A Few Ways To Help Fight Acne

Skin is the largest organ on the human body. Skin serves as a protective barrier, regulates body temperature, and allows for the elimination of sweat and oils. A persons complexion will change with age and time. Sickness and environmental factors can also affect the look and feel of skin. Changes in sex hormones, cortisol, and the thyroid will directly impact skin health, function, and appearance. Vitamins and minerals can help rebalance hormone levels, fight acne, and lead to clearer skin. Topical and oral medications have shown to be highly effective in the fight against acne. 4 of the most popular acne-fighting vitamins and minerals include vitamin A, vitamin D, zinc, and vitamin E.

The Antioxidant Property Of Vitamin C

L-ascorbate is a very potent reducing agent. It quickly mops up harmful free radicals such as reactive oxygen species. In the process, L-ascorbate is oxidized to L-dehydroascorbate.

This oxidized form can be converted back to L-ascorbate. The reduction process of L-dehydroascorbate back to L-ascorbate is managed by glutathione and certain other enzymes in the body.

This reaction also produces semidehydroascorbic acid which can potentially create reactive oxygen species.

However, semidehydroascorbic acid reacts poorly with oxygen. Instead of producing superoxide which is a harmful free radical, two molecules of semidehydroascorbic acid combine to form L-ascorbate and dehydroascorbate which is then reconverted to L-ascorbate by glutathione.

All of these reactions mean that the antioxidant activity of each molecule of vitamin C is amplified because the byproducts of its antioxidant reactions are reconverted back to the active form of vitamin C.

Although this is typical of reversible antioxidants, vitamin C overcomes the limitation of this ability because it does not produce superoxide or any other harmful free radicals which can harm cells.

«0Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant for treating acne. It can also help reduce the side effects of tetracycline antibiotics used in acne treatment.

Use Vitamin C Serums In The Morning

Theres certainly no law against using vitamin C products in the evening, but you may get the most benefit from using them in the morning. In general vitamin C products should be applied in the morning before heading out for the day, when UV radiation is at its highest, Dr. Hogan says.

But vitamin C becomes less effective when exposed to light, so its important to give it time to absorb into your skin before going outside, SELF explained previously. You dont need to wait a specific amount of timeas long as its absorbed, youre good to go.

First: Why Is Therapeutic Dose Important

Is Vitamin C Serum Good For Acne Prone Skin?

Cant we just get all the vitamins and minerals we need from a balanced diet? .

While its true a balanced diet is important, the truth is 1) who even knows what a perfectly balanced diet is and 2) who can stick to it?!

What is really important is therapeutic dose:

Definition of therapeutic dose from The Medical Dictionary: the quantity of any substance required to effect the cure of a disease or to correct the manifestations of a deficiency of a particular factor in the diet

In other words, yes you can get Vitamin C from eating an orange. But its hard to get enough to effect a deficiency. And anyway, taking a pill is a lot easier than eating 5 oranges right??

Do You Get Enough Vitamin C

It used to be standard procedure for nutrition experts to recommend very large doses of vitamin C. Daily doses of 1000, 5000, and even 25,000 mg of vitamin C were supposed to be thing to activate the immune system. Some people even tried to persuade their customers that the diarrhea and dehydration that come with taking huge doses of vitamin C was a good thing, a signal that the vitamin C was working. But the old advertising pitch for vitamin C was based on at best a faulty understanding of how the nutrient actually works in the human body.

Getting enough vitamin C to avoid scurvy really only requires an orange or an apple once or twice a week.

Getting enough vitamin C for optimum health of your skin really isnt especially hard, either. You can be just fine on as little as 100 mg per day if you are sure to get it from natural sources.

Some of these food choices provide more vitamin C than that in a single serving. All serving sizes in this list are 3-1/2 oz, which is roughly 100 grams.

Just one to four servings of the foods on this list provides all the vitamin C you need for the health of your skin.

There are other conditions that require more vitamin C, but 100 mg per day is enough for acne.

Of course, some people just arent going to get their vitamin C from fruits and vegetables. If thats you, then there are two ways you need to get your vitamin C.

Take vitamin C with bioflavonoids or Acerola with Vitamin C USP. One capsule or tablet per day is enough.

Three Steps To A Good Routine Cleanse Treat Protect

There really are three steps to a good routine. Cleanse, treat and protect. First you cleanse by taking off the makeup, oils, and dirt from the day off your face . Then you will treat any symptoms you would like to individually focus on with active ingredients. And lastly, you will use products to protect your skin from the sun, external environment, or help lock moisture in from your treatment phase.

Every skincare product can be organized into these three categories. You can go really minimalistic and just stick to one product within each step or do a few more. Its all up to you! I would start simple and then build up as you research more about skincare and what you like.

What My Dermatologist Says:

“I have had so many patients mention this,” says board-certified dermatologist Jennifer Herrmann. “Although biotin deficiency can cause skin rashes, thin hair, and brittle nails, consuming more or an excess without a deficiency doesnât offer benefits of fewer rashes, thicker hair, or firmer nails when we look at quality scientific studies. Interestingly, biotin shares an absorption receptor in the gut with pantothenic acid. Taking too much of either biotin or pantothenic acid can cause a deficiency in the other as absorption receptors are all bound by whatever vitamin is in excess. Because pantothenic acid is believed to be important for healthy functioning of the skinâs barrier, in theory, a deficiency of this acid may lead to skin barrier disruption which may impact acne/inflammation.”

According to Herrmann, more studies need to be performed to better understand this connection, but this is one theorized explanation for why biotin can cause acne in certain cases.

What Exactly Is Vitamin C

When talking about skin, vitamin C is a water-soluble antioxidant and an essential nutrient that protects your skin against free radical damage and improves your skins health. Vitamin C is also required for the growth and repair of tissues in your body. The human body does not naturally produce vitamin C but sources it from vitamin C rich fruits and vegetables. Vitamin C skincare products are a way of topically supplying vitamin C directly to the skin. Even if you eat all the vitamin c rich foods, your skin reaps the biggest benefits when vitamin C is applied topically in its most potent and concentrated form.

How To Deal With A Biotin

According to both Lee and Herrmann, the first thing to do is immediately discontinue use of the product that’s causing your skin irritation or breakout. Then, settle into a less-is-more approach and religiously stick to a simple skincare regimen consisting of a gentle cleanser a gentle, oil-free moisturizer and high-quality SPF.

“Keep it basic,” says Lee. Give your skin time to heal because doing more will likely just aggravate the situation.

Notice If The Product Has Changed Color

Your vitamin C serum should be colorless or a light straw color, Dr. Hogan says. If it is oxidized, it becomes yellow or brown and is likely going to be less effective.

You can still use it if you want, but it wont do as much for your skin and, very rarely, oxidized vitamin C products can even cause slight yellow discoloration of the skin, Dr. Hogan says.

So consider getting rid of any vitamin C products that have dramatically changed color since you bought them. Especially if it is brown, I would say to toss it, Dr. Lamb says.

Provides Your Skin With Hydration

Its no surprise that vitamin C is very hydrating for your skin. A popular vitamin C derivative, magnesium ascorbyl phosphate can help keep your skin hydrated for days. It helps in decreasing transepidermal water loss, which allows your skin to better retain moisture. Moreover, the more hydrated your skin is, the younger and smoother it looks.

Does Vitamin C Serum Cause Acne

Do you have oily acne-prone skin that can break out if you so much as sniff a new skincare product? Are you looking to incorporate a vitamin C serum into your skincare routine but worried that it will break you out? Is vitamin C good for acne-prone skin? Or does vitamin C serum cause acne?

Lets explore the research behind vitamin C serums in order to answer these questions.

But first, why should you consider introducing a vitamin C serum into your routine in the first place?

How To Use A Vitamin C Serum For Oily Acne

Theres no proof that Vitamin C causes acne. In fact, it may even help treat it faster!

And yet, many of my clients with oily, acne-prone skin complain their acne got worse after introducing a Vitamin C serum into their skincare routine.

Science cant explain why. But I dont believe in waiting around doing nothing while science catches up with real skin problems.

Instead, lets find a way to make Vitamin C safe for you, too. Enter Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate .

Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate is a derivative of Vitamin C . When it sinks into your skin, enzymes come along to convert it into L-Ascorbic Acid.

A study published in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science shows that Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate can treat acne vulgaris. How?

Acne is caused by two major factors:

  • Bacteria: Proprionibacterium Acnes, or P.Acnes for short
  • Lipid oxidation: when your sebum oxidises, your skin becomes inflamed

Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate deals with both. 1% of SAP reduces the amount of P.Acnes on your skin, while 5% prevents lipid oxidation in the first place.

What To Look For In A Vitamin C Serum For Acne

Not all vitamin C serums are created equal. There are some guidelines to follow when choosing one in general, but when choosing one for acne consider the following:

  • Vitamin Cs antioxidant properties are most effective when found in a concentration between 8% and 20%. A higher concentration is more potent, and more appropriate for oily skin.
  • Vitamin C will be more potent as an antioxidant when combined with other antioxidants such as ferulic acid and vitamin E.
  • Other ingredients, such as witch hazel and aloe vera, can be combined with vitamin C to soothe the symptoms of acne-inflamed skin.
  • Vitamin C is best absorbed topically at a pH under 4, so ensure that additional ingredients are also effective at a low pH. For instance, salicylic acid is an active acne-fighting ingredient that also functions at a low pH .
  • For dry skin, use products with a lower concentration of vitamin C. One study found that an application of a 5% vitamin C cream effectively increased skin hydration.
  • Serums containing other hydrating ingredients such as HA, glycerin or dimethicone are also effective in managing dry, acne-prone skin.

The coloring of a vitamin C serum will indicate its effectiveness. The serum should appear slightly yellowish in tone, almost clear, and should not have any odor. With time, and exposure to oxygen, it will begin to show discolorationusually dark yellow and eventually brownish orange.

What Should You Look For In A Vitamin C Serum

Getting a high level of vitamin C to boost collagenwithout bringing on redness and irritationis the key to vitamin C products, Klein says. Her recommendation is to use a serum that has between 15 and 30 percent vitamin C. Vitamin C should be one of the first ingredients listed on the label, Jaliman adds.

Vitamin C is unstable and will degrade over time, losing its efficacy. Interacting with heat, light, and air speeds up the process, which is why you should look for serums in opaque, airtight bottles.

There are many different derivatives of vitamin C, including ascorbic acid, magnesium ascorbyl phosphate, and sodium ascorbyl phosphateso if one derivative is too irritating, you can always try another. L-ascorbic acid is one popular form of vitamin C, and although its more unstable than other forms of vitamin C, its also less irritating. Look for vitamin C serums that contain ferulic acid, which helps stabilize the vitamin and creates an ideal pH level.
