What Are The Benefits Of Activated Charcoal For Acne

Besides, preventing pores from clogging because of its cleaning and oil-diminishing capabilities, activated charcoal can also help to unclog the inlets as it removes the sebum, dirt, and dead skin from the pores.

It will smoothen the skins appearance Just as in the stomach, activated charcoal will bind any positively charged enzymes, dirt, chemicals, or heavy metals that are present on the skin which will be removed when you rinse it off.

Bacteria are naturally present on the surface of the skin. For people that are prone to oily skin and breakout, the bacteria can flourish in the anaerobic environment of the oily skin.

It will bind bacteria that are present on the skin and thus, positively affect acne. For bacteria that are deeper inside the skin, it is not clear and scientific studies must tell. However, activated charcoal will likely draw out bacteria and any enzymes that lie underneath the skins surface due to its negatively charged structure.

The Ph Of Bentonite Clay

Bentonite clay, like other clays, is naturally alkaline. Its pH normally falls somewhere between 8 and 9, or just slightly higher than 9, which makes is more alkaline than some other clays that are used for facial masks.

For that reason, some people with sensitive skin find that mixing bentonite clay with water, or anything with a neutral or alkaline pH, can be irritating to their skin.

Distilled witch hazel has a slightly acidic pH, somewhere around 5, so it helps to neutralize the alkalinity of the clay. If you dont have witch hazel on hand, and dont want to buy it, you can use plain distilled water instead.

If you have sensitive skin, and find that this DIY charcoal clay mask irritates your skin if mixed with water, you can try using apple cider vinegar or aloe juice as the liquid. Both aloe juice and apple cider vinegar have an acidic pH that will also help neutralize the alkalinity of the bentonite.

Charcoal masks that provide exfoliating effects may offer results in reducing the appearance of acne scars. Therefore, it is best to use a charcoal-based scrub or wash-off mask.

Once again, there is no solid scientific evidence to show that these masks can be used effectively as a treatment for acne scars. Instead, you should opt for products containing glycolic acid, a chemical exfoliant scientifically proven to reduce the appearance of scarring.

Why Use Witch Hazel

Witch hazel is one of my favorite alternatives to distilled water in natural cosmetic recipes. It helps fight against acne, and can also help with skin inflammation, healing sores, killing bacteria within your pores, etc. In this recipe, it also helps to neutralize the alkalinity of the clay which helps make the mask more mild for those with sensitive skin.

I use a distilled witch hazel, rather than one with alcohol in it, and I find it works really well in this facial mask. If you find that witch hazel is irritating to your skin, for whatever reason, though, you can replace it with distilled water, aloe juice, or apple cider vinegar.

What Is Charcoal In Skin Care

Lets start with the basics. What even is charcoal when its in your skin care products? The most important thing to know is that the charcoal thats in your face wash isnt the same as the kind you use to grill burgers in the backyard, so dont go raiding the Char-Griller. Typically, when you see this ingredient listed on your products in your shower, its referring to activated charcoal.

What is activated charcoal? Also known as activated carbon, activated charcoal is a substance made from burning a carbon material like coconut shells, peat, olive pits, sawdust or wood, which leaves behind a highly porous fine black powder. The process also purifies the charcoal so its safe for use on your skin. While its being processed, activated charcoal develops a ton of tiny pores all over it, which makes it work amazingly well at adhering and binding to other surfaces.

Since its so porous and can bind to other substances, activated charcoal is great at detoxifying by pulling out dirt, dead skin cells, bacteria and odors. Its chemical structure is also beneficial because it carries a negative electrical charge, which allows it to pull positively charged toxins and gases out of the pores. Its kind of like those little magnetic flakes in an Etch-a-Sketch.
