How To Use Tretinoin

As a topical medication, tretinoin is very easy to use. Topical tretinoin is designed for use once per day and is generally most effective when applied late in the evening, shortly before you go to bed.;

  • Before you apply tretinoin, wash your face thoroughly. The best way to prepare your face for tretinoin is to wash it with warm, soapy water. Choose a mild soap that doesnt irritate your skin and avoid harsh scrubs and cleansers that leave your skin red and/or itchy.

  • After youve finished washing your face, rinse away any soapy water and gently dry your face using a clean towel.

  • Apply a pea-sized amount of tretinoin to your finger, then gently rub it into your face. Use tretinoin only on the areas of your face affected by acne scarring and avoid applying any of the topical solution to your eyes, lips or nostrils.

  • Rub the tretinoin into your skin, making sure its evenly applied to all areas with visible acne scarring. Aim for an even, consistent application without any overly wet areas or clumps of tretinoin cream.

  • If you have tretinoin cream on your hands, wash it away with antibacterial soap. Topical tretinoin can cause your hands to feel dry and irritated, making it important to make sure you wash away all of the cream after applying it to your face.

  • Like other topical scar treatments, tretinoin doesnt produce immediate results. On average, it can take anywhere from two months to one year before youll see a significant improvement in the color and texture of your skin.;

    Are you dealing with unwanted skin conditions such as acne or rosacea and have had no luck with treatment options? If this is this case, tretinoin may be the answer. This medication is known to do wonders for the skin, and even provide anti-aging benefits.

    Read on to learn how to get the most out of using tretinoin for acne.

    How Long Does Tretinoin Take To Work

    Tretinoin starts working as soon as its absorbed by your skin. However, this doesnt mean that youll notice improvements in your acne right away.;

    Like other acne medications, tretinoin needs time to have a noticeable impact on acne. For the most part, scientific research shows that it typically starts to produce improvements after about 12 weeks .

    In one study from 2009, people with acne who used a .05% or .1% tretinoin cream experienced a significant decrease in visible acne lesions after 12 weeks of treatment.

    Interestingly, although the .1% cream contained twice as much tretinoin, it was only 12 percent more effective at reducing acne.;

    However, the stronger tretinoin cream was significantly more likely to cause side effects.

    In another study, patients given a combination of tretinoin cream and clindamycin 1% gel saw a reduction in facial acne lesions from an average of 13.70 ± 4.80 to 1.30 ± 2.95 after 12 weeks of treatment.

    Although a mild improvement was visible after four and eight weeks, the combined tretinoin and clindamycin treatment produced the biggest improvements after 12 weeks.;

    Its important to understand that 12 weeks is a general timeline for the results of tretinoin use to become visible.;

    Many tretinoin users experience improvements sooner, while others may need to wait for slightly longer than 12 weeks for optimal results.;

    Several different factors may affect the amount of time it takes for tretinoin to clear acne lesions and improve your skin:

    If you want to use tretinoin to treat acne, start by choosing a cream or gel that has a low amount of the active ingredient tretinoin. If needed, you can work up to higher amounts as your skin becomes accustomed to the treatment.

    To apply tretinoin safely and effectively:

  • Clean your skin with warm water and pat dry before using any topical acne medication. Wash your hands before applying any cream or lotion to your face. Wait a few minutes to make sure your skin is completely dry before you use the medication.
  • Apply just enough of the medication to lightly cover the affected area. You dont need to build a thick layer of the medication on your face. A dime-size amount of the medication should be enough to spread across your whole face.
  • Using the tips of your fingers, spread the medication away from sensitive areas such as your eyes, your nostrils, and your lips. Rub the cream or gel into your face lightly and let it absorb completely.
  • For best results, apply tretinoin once at bedtime so that it can absorb completely into your skin while you sleep. Its best not to apply makeup in the hours immediately following this treatment.

    If, after 8 to 12 weeks, you dont see any improvement in your skin, speak with a dermatologist about prescription-strength tretinoin or other treatment options.

    Below, weve explained how tretinoin works, as well as how it can make your acne scars flatter, lighter and less visible.;

    RETIN-A SKINCARE ROUTINE | HOW I USE TRETINOIN TO TREAT ACNE MARKS

    Cystic acne is a severe form of acne. While regular acne develops when a hair follicle becomes clogged with a mixture of oil and dead skin, cystic acne forms when a clogged hair follicle becomes infected with bacteria.

    When bacteria makes its way inside the follicle, it can cause inflammation. Infected pimples can become red, swollen and filled with pus.;

    They may become itchy, irritated and can be painful if accidentally bumped or touched.

    Worse yet, cystic acne can spread easily. If one infected pimple bursts, the bacteria can easily get stuck under your fingernails or trapped inside other hair follicles, causing a major outbreak elsewhere on your face or body that can affect your skin for months at a time.

    Just like regular pimples, cystic acne is most common in teenagers and people in their early- to mid-twenties. However, it can affect people of all ages, and in adults its called adult-onset acne.

    Prep Your Skincare Routine

    The best thing you can do before you start using tretinoin is make sure you are using gentle skincare products.

    The absolute worst thing you can do is use products with irritating, drying ingredients that will only make your skin angry.

    Tretinoin will make your skin extra sensitive during the adjustment phase. This is why its important to stop using certain products. I will talk about ingredients and products to avoid in a little bit.

    Simplify your skincare routine by using less products and products that are gentle and designed for sensitive skin.

    • A gentle, sulfate free cleanser
    • A bland moisturizer

    Yes, that is really all you need.

    You can use other products, but I recommend sticking to a very simple routine for a few weeks. If you do want to use other products, just make sure the ingredients arent irritating.

    Are Retinoid Skin Care Products Worth The Trouble

    Scientific studies and my medical experience give me so many reasons to be a big fan of retinoids, including tretinoin. Skin has special receptors just for retinoids . Through these receptors, tretinoin transform skin!

    • It has proven itself to reduce, reverse, and prevent wrinkles. The younger a person starts , the more benefit they receive, but it’s never too late!
    • It helps lighten and prevent age spots.
    • It builds collagen to thicken and increase the structural strength of treated skin.
    • It helps reduce crepey skin.
    • It turns off the collagen destruction that happens from UV ray exposure.
    • Skin is proven to just look better and younger when a person uses tretinoin.

    Tretinoin For Hormonal Acne

    While almost all acne is technically hormonal, the term hormonal acne usually refers to acne that occurs as a result of fluctuations in your bodys production of androgenic hormones.

    Androgens like testosterone stimulate your bodys production of sebum — a natural oil thats vital for keeping your skin hydrated and healthy.;

    When your body secretes too much sebum, excess sebum can collect inside your hair follicles, creating blocked pores that can develop into acne.

    Sebum isnt the only component of hormonal acne. Another factor that can contribute to hormonal outbreaks is the presence of dead skin cells on your skin, which can become stuck inside open pores.

    When dead skin cells combine with sebum inside a pore, the result is a blockage. Blocked pores can be partially open or completely closed .;

    They can even become infected and inflamed, leading to the development of painful, uncomfortable acne lesions.

    While hormonal acne affects both men and women, its slightly more common in women. It usually becomes visible in the days immediately before and during your period, as this is when your bodys testosterone levels are at their highest.

    Unless otherwise specified by your dermatologist, it is important to avoid certain topical medications when using tretinoin, as they can cause severe adverse reactions. These include benzoyl peroxide, sulfur and salicylic acid.;;

    For those who are pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant, this medication must be avoided. Lastly, ensure your dermatologist is aware of any other skin conditions such as eczema or dermatitis to avoid exacerbating irritation.

    How To Use Tretinoin To Reduce Acne And Improve Your Skin

    Tretinoin is a popular ingredient in several anti-acne products. Though these products may have similar characteristics, the methods of application and the time of treatment may differ. Tretinoin, in its virgin form, is a potent substance. In over-the-counter medications, tretinoin is available only in minute concentrations. Higher concentrations warrant a doctorâs prescription.

    Here are the most common forms one may use tretinoin in for treating acne.

    • Exfoliates: “Tretinoin increases cellular turnover and chemically exfoliates the top layers of our skin,” dermatologist Anna Karp explains.
    • Calms inflammation: “Tretinoin lessens the shedding of dead skin cells into the pore/hair follicle and decreases inflammation,” says Karp.
    • Unclogs pores: “Acne is a multi-factorial disease with increased dead skin cells filling up in our pores causing comedones and inflammation. Bacteria often colonize the pore, leading to worse acne,” says Karp. Tretinoin helps break down those comedones.
    • Fights signs of aging: “Decades of research confirm tretinoin as the ‘gold standard’ in topical treatment for fighting acne and clogged pores, as well as reducing fine lines, mitigating unwanted pigmentation, and improving skin texture,” says Lortscher.

    Tretinoin starts working as soon as you apply it to the affected area of your skin. However, it can still take a few months before you start to see noticeable results. Thatâs because youâll typically go through the purge first and then your skin will begin to improve. Studies show significant improvement in acne after using Tretinoin once daily over 12 weeks.

    So if youâre just starting with Tretinoin, keep at it! Once you get through the purge, the new fresh skin cells should reveal clearer, younger-looking skin.

    Use A Buffer If Needed

    If your skin is still becoming irritated and dry, try applying your moisturizer before applying the tretinoin. This will essentially decrease its strength so that its less irritating.

    Still use the 30 minute rule after washing your face if you do this.

    This is a great way to help get your skin used to the tretinoin and really help with the side effects. Especially if your skin is dry.

    Eventually you will be able to skip this step and just apply the tretinoin cream to bare skin. Or, if it works better for you to buffer it, then by all means keep doing it!

    This will not decrease the efficacy, I promise! Youre simply making it more tolerable for your skin, and your skin will be happier for it.

    How Does Tretinoin Treat Cystic Acne

    While there arent any studies that specifically look at tretinoin as a treatment for cystic acne, tretinoin is widely used and thoroughly studied as a conventional acne treatment.;

    Its also a widely prescribed medication by healthcare providers for treating cases of cystic acne.

    Because cystic acne is caused by a combination of acne and bacteria, most healthcare providers use two medications as part of a treatment program: a retinoid in conjunction with an antibiotic to help reduce inflammation and kill bacteria.

    On its own, tretinoin does not kill bacteria, meaning that, while its effective in combination with an antibiotic, its usually not enough to completely treat cystic acne independently.

    Some common antibiotics used in combination with tretinoin to treat cystic acne are tetracycline antibiotics like doxycycline, minocycline and tetracycline.;

    Some healthcare providers also prescribe topical antibiotics like clindamycin and erythromycin, particularly for young people.

    On the whole, healthcare providers often recommend a combination of tretinoin and an antibiotic.;

    For most people, antibiotics are prescribed for a short period of time to kill bacteria and clear up cystic acne, while tretinoin is usually prescribed for long-term acne treatment and prevention.
