Approximately 85% of all teens deal with acne to one degree or another.XResearch source Contrary to popular belief, no link has been found between diet and acne.XResearch source The actual cause is due to hormonal changes in teenagers, which produce additional facial oils. Most of these cases are basic and can be cleared up with a daily washing regimen that combats the extra facial oil. However, some cases may be severe or persistent enough to warrant a trip to the dermatologist.

Teenage Acne Home Remedies

Dr Anil Abraham says, “Home remedies for acne are of three types: Evidence-based, eminence-based, and eloquence-based. Evidence-based is decided by research. For example, steaming plays an important role in removing blackheads as this process opens up the pores of the oil-secreting sebaceous glands. The focus should be on using evidence-based methods to tackle the problem.”

1. Use steam: The most simple acne treatment at home consists of using steam. It softens the skin, opens the pores and in the process, gets rid of oils and toxins. To do this, bring water to a boil in a small container. Ask your teen to hold her face a few inches above the water. For more effective steam therapy, ask your teen to cover her head with a towel and let it drop down to cover the container. Let her sit in this position for some time, after which she can gently wipe her face with the towel.

2. Use a toner: A toner is an extremely useful product in fighting acne breakouts and controlling excess oil production of your skin. After your teen has used steam, ask her to apply a toner. It helps remove any remaining impurities and unclogs the pores. Your teen can use apple cider vinegar in the morning and evening to tone the skin.

“Eat sensibly, cut down on high glycemic food that contain a lot of sugar. Avoid smoking and get regular exercise,” says Dr Anil Abraham.

Tips To Prevent Teenage Acne

Apart from depending solely on medication for teenage acne, preventing further acne is also possible with the help of the following tips:

  • Use a cleansing agent consisting of benzoyl peroxide or as prescribed by the dermatologist. Do not over wash the face or scrub it too hard. Remember that dirt does not cause teenage acne. Washing the face for two times in a day will prevent triggering of the glands to produce excessive oil.
  • Use oil-free products or greasy substances that are common across several types of cosmetics to prevent teenage acne.
  • Do not pop a pimple. Doing so will cause the bacteria to penetrate further into the skin, and bloom at different parts. It can also cause pain and leave behind a permanent scar.

In most cases, your family doctor will recommend treatments that go on the skin . Some of these are available from the pharmacy without a prescription. Acne treatments don’t do much for existing pimples – their job is to help prevent the next round. As a result, treatments can take weeks or months to show improvement. Your teen should try any new cream or lotion on a small area first, in case it irritates their skin. They can then put it on their face, shoulders and back rather than just the individual spots. Teen Skin Problem No : Oily Skin

Although oily skin and acne often go hand-in-hand, this isn’t always the case. Some teens suffer from oily skin alone.

If your complexion is oily but you’re not breaking out, there are two treatment approaches.

“You can use topical treatments to ‘mop up’ the oil, or you can get to the root of the problem which is excess oil production, and shut it down – and both methods can work very well,” says Charles E. Crutchfield III, MD, clinical associate professor of dermatology at the University of Minnesota Medical School Medical.

To mop it up, Crutchfield says, choose products containing alcohol, such as a “drying solution” that soaks up excess oil on the surface of the skin. You can also use a blotting product — sheets of specially treated paper that you touch to your face to absorb oil.

Resnik often recommends an “oil inhibitor” like OC 8. “It utilizes an absorbent technology to reduce shine and it’s very effective and suitable for all skin types,” he says.

If none of these do the trick, Crutchfield says, professional laser treatments can help. He notes that the Aramis laser, for example, is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of oil production in acne.

“It actually interacts with the oil glands themselves to get them to be less active. In a sense, it causes them to ‘go to sleep’ for up to a year, so oil production is dramatically down,” says Crutchfield.

What you don’t want to do is wash your face excessively, trying to get rid of the oil.

Why Do Some Teenagers Have Acne While Others Do Not

It is unclear why a few teenagers acquire acne in their younger years while a few do not have it at all. However, the reason behind the occurrence of acne is due to androgen hormones. These hormones, released by the body, are responsible for secretion of oil through the glands that lie beneath the skin. The generation of these hormones by the body happens during the teenage period.

If you find yourself stuffing your hands in your pockets every chance you get, you may be trying to hide warts. These fleshy colored, or sometimes dark, lumps and bumps can grow under fingernails, on your fingers, on the backs of the hands, or on the soles of the feet. Caused by a virus, doctors say warts seems to impact teens the most.

“Warts are very common in teen years, and happen at a time when even a minor imperfection can seem to cause major problems,” says Schlessinger.

There are many treatments for warts, says Schlesinger. They include freezing the growths with liquid nitrogen, or burning them off with a laser or a chemical treatment. While the treatments sometimes work, warts can come back.

The best way to avoid getting warts is to avoid biting your nails or injuring your hands. Skin that is injured appears to be more susceptible to the wart viruses.

Most warts go away without any treatment within about two years. And warts are not dangerous. But if you have warts that disturb you, your primary health care practitioner can discuss various treatment options with you.
