Cystic Acne Home Remedies
You can take some steps to help prevent acne or keep it from getting worse:
- Wash your skin twice a day and after you sweat. Use your fingertips and a gentle cleanser. Rinse with lukewarm water.
- Donât scrub your skin or use irritating products like exfoliants.
- Donât touch cysts or pick at blemishes. You might push the infection deeper and make it spread. Let blemishes heal on their own, instead of popping or squeezing them, to lower your risk of scars.
- Stay out of the sun and away from tanning beds, which can damage your skin.
- Try to relax. Stress can make your body release more hormones, which can make acne worse.
- Keep a healthy lifestyle. Get plenty of sleep and exercise. Some research suggests that a low-glycemic diet, which limits sugar, can help ease symptoms.

Wash Face With A Gentle Cleanser Twice A Day And After Sweating
Sweating, especially while wearing a hat can make acne worse, so wash your skin as soon as possible after sweating. Not washing your face and leaving buildup of oil and dirt will cause new acne and exasperate current ones.
Use gentle face washes that are alcohol free containing active ingredients like salicylic acid. Avoid cleansers with harsh ingredients like sodium laureth sulfate. Products with harsh chemicals will further irritate your skin.
How Dermatologists Treat Severe Acne
When a patient has severe acne, a dermatologist often recommends treating it with one of the following.
Antibiotic + medicine you apply to the acne: This is often the first treatment recommended for severe acne. Taking an antibiotic can reduce the redness and swelling of acne. The medicine you apply to your skin works on reducing bacteria and clogged pores.
If this treatment fails to clear your skin, your dermatologist may switch your antibiotic or talk with you about isotretinoin .
Isotretinoin: This is a potent medicine that attacks all four causes of acnebacteria, clogged pores, excess oil, and inflammation . About 85% of patients see permanent clearing after one course of isotretinoin.
Due to possible side effects, you will need to carefully consider whether you want to take this medicine. If you decide to take isotretinoin, you must enroll in a monitoring program.
Birth control pill : A birth control pill can be an effective part of an acne treatment plan. When treating severe acne, a birth control pill may be used along with an antibiotic or a medicine called spironolactone to get the acne under control.
Give treatment time
Give your acne treatment time to work. It can take two to three months to see improvement.
If the pill may be an option for you, its important to tell your dermatologist about all of your medical conditions, including heart disease. Your dermatologist must weigh the risks of using a birth control pill to treat acne against the benefits.

Best Products For Cystic Pimples
Unfortunately for people looking at how to shrink a cystic pimple , topical products dont cut it for deeper cysts.
While a consistent and well-rounded skincare routine is essential for those dealing with acne, when it comes to deep cystic pimples, products applied to the skin typically arent able to do enough to fully treat the issue.
Because acne cysts are deep in the skin, topical acne treatments do not penetrate well enough to manage them, explains Dr. Shainhouse. She explains that over-the-counter salicylic acid and retinoid products wont penetrate deep enough into the pore, and that theyll likely just dry the skin. Benzoyl peroxide products may calm inflammation, but also typically cant penetrate deep cysts.
She does note that some patients suffering from cysts might benefit somewhat from topical steroids.
Topical steroids can help reduce the overlying inflammation, she says. These are all great options at the first sign of a lesion, but deeper, persistent and recurrent cysts respond best to professional and prescription medication options.
Can You Pop A Cystic Pimple
No, you cannot and should not attempt to pop a cystic pimple. Cystic pimples are deep in the pores, and would be practically impossible to pop. Plus, squeezing them can lead to scarring on the skin. It is best to seek the help of a dermatologist if you are trying to figure out how to shrink a cystic pimple.
The cystic component to acne is particularly concerning because these lesions not uncommonly can lead to scarring, says Dr. Robin Evans, a board-certified dermatologist based in Stamford, Connecticut. Squeezing and manipulating these lesions is not helpful and can lead to further scarring.

What Is Severe Acne
Severe acne causes breakouts that often extend deep into the skin. Called cysts and nodules, these breakouts tend to be painful. When severe acne clears, acne scars often appear.
You may also see many blackheads, whiteheads, or both when acne is severe.
Anyone who has severe acne knows how stubborn it can be. You cannot clear it with acne treatment that you buy at the store. To see clearing, you either have to wait it out or see a dermatologist. Waiting out severe acne can take years.
The Best Cystic Acne Treatment
At-home treatments for cystic acne do exist, though and they can be pleasingly effective when it comes to mild-to-moderate cases.
Like most experts, Thomas considers topical retinol the most powerful and proven ingredient when it comes to treating acne but you must use it correctly, and be patient.
‘Retinol can now be bought over the counter at a 0.5% strength, or you can get a prescription from your doctor for 1% or higher. You need to use retinol consistently and regularly for 6-12 weeks to see the results,’ she says. Its best to introduce your skin to this ingredient slowly: try applying it every third night for the first fortnight, and monitor any redness and irritation you experience. If it feels sore or inflamed, scale things back until your skin acclimatises more.
Another option is salicylic acid. ‘Its oil-soluble, so it can penetrate much deeper than other acids, and is also slightly antibacterial and anti-inflammatory,’ says Thomas. Again, this pore-clearing beta-hydroxy-acid can be drying, so remember that less is more, and always layer a light hydrator on top.

Are Aspirin Masks Good For Cystic Acne
This one worries me because it encourages people to crush up aspirin to make a face mask and they could end up with a higher concentration of it in one area versus another. We use salicylic acid, which is somewhat a cousin of acetylsalicylic acid to treat acne, but its a low percentage. I definitely wouldnt crush up a bottle of aspirin and put it on my face.
What Is Scalp Acne
Scalp acne, like other forms of acne, occurs when pores or hair follicles in the scalp become clogged. While acne pimples can develop on any part of the scalp, these bumps most commonly occur along the hairline. Without proper care, scalp acne can develop very deep into the hair follicles, which can be painful and more difficult to treat. According to Dr. Gustovich, If you notice scalp acne, you should take steps to treat this condition as soon as possible. In the early stages, scalp acne can be treated using simple, over-the-counter products, but in the more severe stages, youll need to work with a dermatologist to receive more advanced treatment.

Do Home Remedies Work For Cystic Acne
Home remedies may be most effective in treating cystic acne in its earliest stages. Research into the use of medicinal plants, such as tea tree oil and aloe vera, has produced mixed results, including some positive findings that may support their use, at least in the short term.
However, home remedies may be best suited as complementary therapy for a more comprehensive treatment plan supervised by your dermatologist. Typically, oral antibiotics and other prescription medications are needed to reverse a cystic acne breakout and clear up your skin.
What Is The Prognosis Of Cystic Acne
Immediate resolution of the acne, even with the best and most effective treatments, is unlikely. The skin cells have a six-week life cycle, and it usually takes a number of weeks before optimal results may be reached. The prognosis for eventual control is good, although there will always be some remaining scarring long after the condition has been treated or gone into remission.

Trying To Extract Cystic Acne At Home Will Only Make It Worse
Dr. Braue has stressed this a number of times so its worth repeating dont mess with cystic acne. It doesnt matter if youve watched hours of pimple extraction videos. If you need an area drained, leave that to a professional.
Picking or popping cystic acne can lead to scarring and that can lead to dyspigmentation. Also, when you do this, not everything comes out and you end up spreading some of the inflammation around which isnt ideal either. If youre considering draining an acne cyst at home, I definitely dont encourage it.
What Not To Do And What Not To Buy
While topical products may help to keep acne-prone skin healthy, Dr. Kluk is keen to stress that serums and skincare alone wont bring severe cystic acne under control. However, she does recommend sticking to a few skincare principles while on your path to clearer skin…
- Never try to pick or squeeze cysts. This can lead to infection and increase the risks of scarring. Yes, we know it’s tempting, but you will not win.
- Dont attempt to scrub or exfoliate the skin. This can increase swelling and redness.
- Use a mild cleanser and moisturiser, and a sunscreen in the morning too. This may be all that is necessary whilst you complete your course of medication.
As Thomas adds, some products may actually contribute to the formation of blockages in the pores, ultimately exasperating your acne. She advises ditching the oils, balms and richer creams, looking instead for products both skincare and makeup marked non-comedogenic, . ‘Also avoid overly drying products,’ she says. ‘Drying out the surface will rarely affect a cyst, and really just causes more redness and irritation.’

Whitehead: A hair follicle thats blocked by dead skin cells piling up after the follicle opening gets blocked, but its smaller and less inflamed than a Cyst. You should never pop a white head but instead, apply a topical spot cream combined with retinoid cream.

Pimple: An overgrowth of bacteria which stimulates an immune response that creates redness, swelling, pain and sometimes pus. DIY: Lightly press a hot flannel onto your skin, then dab tea tree oil or a piece of fresh ginger onto the blemish. .
Cyst: Cysts tend to be more painful, larger, redder and raised than a white head.
