When oral antibiotics are discontinued, control should be maintained long-term by continuing topical therapy.

Can Food Or Other Things Cause Cystic Acne

According to Dr. Braue, the foods that are often associated with acne havent been scientifically linked to cystic acne.

Sugar, chocolate and fast food always get a bad rap, but I havent seen any great scientific data that links them to cystic acne. So, I cant say that if you eat fast food three times a week or eat too much chocolate, your acne is going to be much worse. There isnt enough proof that these foods are direct causes.

However, if you notice that your acne flares up when you eat certain foods, your healthcare provider or dermatologist might encourage you to avoid them.

The one thing that Dr. Braue has noticed is a connection between acne and skim milk.

From the available data that we have, there seems to be a link between the severity of acne and the ingestion of skim milk. I do always ask patients if theyre drinking a lot of skim milk or if theyre taking whey protein. If they are, I counsel them on finding an alternative.

What Causes Back Acne

There are many reasons people get acne, so its important to know why and how pimples form.

Your body produces an oil called sebum. Its made in the glands connected to your hair follicles. Sebum moves up the hair follicles to add moisture to your skin and hair.

Pimples form when extra sebum and dead skin cells build up. This buildup blocks skin pores and bacteria. When the hair follicle wall swells out, it forms a whitehead pimple. When the clogged pore gets exposed to air, blackhead pimples form.

Some common causes of acne are:

  • Genetics. Trouble with acne can run in your family.
  • Medications. Acne can develop as a side effect of some medicines like certain antidepressants.
  • Hormones. Hormonal changes in the teenage years are often the cause of acne. But for women past puberty, pimple outbreaks can be linked to hormonal changes that happen during menstruation and pregnancy.
  • Sweat. Sweat, especially if its trapped under tight clothing, can make acne worse.
  • Stress. Stress isnt a direct cause of acne, but it could be a contributing factor.

Some research shows that foods you eat could be linked to acne.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, there is some evidence that certain carbohydrates known to increase your blood sugar levels can also contribute to acne. For some, dairy products might also be a trigger.

In most cases, you can get rid of acne by making some lifestyle changes and using at-home remedies. Here are some things you can do to get rid of back acne:

What Strategies Should I Use To Combat Maskne At Home

Many of the strategies we typically use to combat acne can be further irritating or inflaming for people struggling with acne mechanica aka maskne. The treatments we may normally recommend may not necessarily be the right choice for these patients. Even if breakouts clear up, very drying or harsh treatments may leave you extremely dry skin, eczema flareups, or sores from the mask rubbing against skin. If you struggle with acne, your regular treatment plan may not be effective, so its important to talk to your dermatologist to adjust your daily skincare routine to combat maskne.

Some recommendations for combating maskne at home include:

Cystic Acne Could Be A Sign Of Other Health Conditions

How to Get Rid of Back Acne

Another reason Dr. Braue recommends seeing a dermatologist or even your healthcare provider first cystic acne could be a sign that something else is going on.

Its important to get checked out by a dermatologist, or at the very least, your primary care physician who can appropriately refer you to a dermatologist. Sometimes, people who have significant inflammation may have another underlying condition. For example, its not uncommon to see younger women or teens who have polycystic ovary syndrome and cystic acne. If youre attempting to treat cystic acne with over-the-counter solutions, youre not going to take into consideration that there could be an issue with your menstrual cycle or an issue that could lead to a metabolic disorder.

What Are The Different Types Of Acne

Acne can take several forms. They include:

  • Blackheads: Open bumps on the skin that fill with excess oil and dead skin. They look as if dirt has deposited in the bump, but the dark spots are actually caused by an irregular light reflection off the clogged follicle.
  • Whiteheads: Bumps that remain closed by oil and dead skin.
  • Papules: Small red or pink bumps that become inflamed.
  • Pustules: Pimples containing pus. They look like whiteheads surrounded by red rings. They can cause scarring if picked or scratched.
  • Fungal acne : This type occurs when an excess of yeast develops in the hair follicles. They can become itchy and inflamed.
  • Nodules: Solid pimples that are deep in your skin. They are large and painful.
  • Cysts: Pus-filled pimples. These can cause scars.

All of these forms of acne can affect your self-esteem. Its best to seek help from your healthcare provider early so they can help determine the best treatment option for you.

Get A Cortisone Injection

A cortisone shot involves injecting a low-dose steroid directly into your zit to drastically decrease the pain and inflammation within a few days, says Dr. Marchbein. Itll still take a few days to a week for the cyst to resolve itself completely, and if its monstrous, you might want another injection a few weeks later. It sounds intense and painful, but as someone who has had a dozen zits injected in my life with zero issues, I can assure you its really, truly not a big dealit takes about three seconds , and its usually covered by insurance, so its cheap.

The only potential side effect? Denting. Accidentally injecting too much cortisone can leave a slight depression where your zit used to be, but 1) its rare, especially if its being administered by a board-certified dermatologistwhich, um, is the only person you should be allowing to do it, 2) your derm can fix it fast with a bit of saline solution, and 3) your body usually fills out the dent on its own after a few months anyways.

Isotretinoin And Birth Defects

Back Acne : How to Treat Back Acne

Isotretinoin will damage an unborn baby. If you’re a woman of childbearing age:

  • do not use isotretinoin if you’re pregnant or you think you’re pregnant
  • use 1 or, ideally, 2 methods of contraception for 1 month before treatment begins, during treatment, and for 1 month after treatment has finished
  • have a pregnancy test before, during and after treatment

You’ll be asked to sign a form confirming that you

  • understand the risk of birth defects
  • are willing to use contraceptives to prevent this risk, even if you’re not currently sexually active

If you think you may have become pregnant when taking isotretinoin, contact your dermatologist immediately.

Isotretinoin is also not suitable if you’re breastfeeding.

What About Alternative Therapies

Herbal therapies such as tea tree oil, and topical and oral ayurvedic compounds seem to be well tolerated however, there are limited data about their efficacy and safety in treating acne. One clinical trial showed that topical tea tree oil was effective but had a slower onset of action than traditional topical agents. The Cochrane Collaboration is undertaking a systematic review of the effects of treatments in the management of acne that are currently considered complementary or alternative.

Otc Treatment For Back Acne That Works

OTC stands for over-the-counter. Its medical jargon that means any treatment that you can buy without a prescription.

Studies show that the following OTC acne products can help clear mild back acne when used along with acne-friendly skin care:

Benzoyl peroxide : This helps to kill the bacteria that cause acne. Used daily, it can help control back acne and reduce flares.

Benzoyl peroxide needs time to work

Studies show that benzoyl peroxide works best if left on the back for two to five minutes.

Letting the benzoyl peroxide sit on your skin for a few minutes has two advantages.

  • This approach helps the medicine penetrate your skin. Skin is thicker on the back than on the face.

  • Rinsing it off prevents bleached clothes, sheets, and towels. Benzoyl peroxide is known to bleach fabrics.

  • Youll find OTC benzoyl peroxide foaming washes in different strengths. Using a product that contains 5.3% benzoyl peroxide is less likely to cause irritated skin, dryness, or peeling.

If you feel that you need stronger medicine, you can start with a foaming wash that contains 10% benzoyl peroxide. Thats the strongest concentration of benzoyl peroxide that you can buy without a prescription.

Retinoid : Using this along with benzoyl peroxide can improve your results. This OTC retinoid can help unclog pores, which will help the benzoyl peroxide work better.

Dermatologists recommend applying adapalene after you shower or before going to bed. Again, you want to apply it daily.

    Otc And Prescription Medications

Chin pimples caused by oily skin or poor hygiene can usually be addressed with commercial products. These products contain active ingredients to reduce sebum production and inflammation and kill acne-causing bacteria.

    Salicylic acid cleanser

Salicylic acid reduces both inflammation and sebum production in the skin. Its commonly found as an active ingredient in facial cleansers but is also available in higher concentrations as a spot treatment in the form of a gel or cream.

    Benzoyl peroxide ointment

Benzoyl peroxide kills acne-causing bacteria by releasing oxygen inside clogged pores. Because of its mechanism of action, it does not cause bacterial resistance a problem associated with oral antibiotics.

Available in concentrations of 210% as a cream or lotion, benzoyl peroxide can be easily applied to a pimple on the chin as a spot treatment.

Benzoyl peroxide is most effective when used in tandem with another product such as salicylic acid that will help dry out pimples on the chin.

    Adapalene

Adapalene is a retinoid, a derivative of vitamin A, available OTC at a low concentration and by prescription in concentrations up to 0.3%. It is available as a cream, lotion and gel, and is often used alongside other acne treatments to increase their penetration and efficacy.

Adapalene prevents the formation of microcomedonestiny blocked pores that eventually turn into full-fledged blemishesand helps reduce inflammation inactive lesions.

    Isotretinoin

    What Is Fungal Acne

According to dermatologists, fungal acnes name is misleading because this skin condition isnt actually a type of acne. Its in fact a skin problem caused by yeast that leads to small breakouts that look similar to acne.

This makes it different from other types of acne, which are caused by bacteria.

Fungal acne is actually an infection of the hair follicles. Its technically called pityrosporum folliculitis or Malassezia folliculitis.

Why is it called fungal acne if its due to overgrowth of yeast? Yeast is biologically a type of fungi.

Acutevs Chronic : How To Tell The Difference And What To Do About It

First things first: whats thedifference? To put it simply: when we refer to acute acne, were speaking ofshorter-term breakouts, while chronic acne typicallyrefers to acne symptoms that last for two years or more. Both types beginforming days before a breakout will appear on the surface of the skin, and canoften become triggered by certain types of food, seasonal changes, andespecially hormonal fluctuations, such as pregnancy or menstruation. Somepeople may even have certain genetic predispositions such as higher levels oftestosterone that may trigger the formation of acne.

Despite whats going on under thesurface, acute symptoms may appear suddenly and without much warning, whilechronic symptoms can seem to stick around way past their welcome, whether mildor severe. Whatever the underlying cause, the best way to see results is totreat each type accordingly. Steams, toners, and drying masks tend to be good choices for anyone experiencing acuteacne symptoms as they work to clear pores while shrinking pimples without overdrying. Chronic acne can really benefit from longer-term lifestyle changes, such as implementing an acne-friendly diet, makinghygienic practices a priority and sticking to your skincare regimen no matter what.

Why You Shouldnt Try To Treat Cystic Acne On Your Own

Instead of taking the drugstore route to battle cystic acne, Dr. Braue strongly suggests starting with a dermatologist. Over-the-counter products can work when combined with a comprehensive treatment plan, but he says that a dermatologist can step in way before scarring or skin pigmentation problems set in.

If you are living with true cystic acne, get a good dermatologist and dont mess around with over-the-counter products. Now, there are certain over-the-counter solutions that I do recommend to patients in addition to their treatment plans, but the problem with messing around with cystic acne is that it can lead to scarring and dyspigmentation most of the time.

Dr. Braue adds that this is quite common with skin of color. People with more melanin in their skin tend to experience more hyperpigmentation or discoloration because of the inflammation thats associated with cystic acne.

    Can I Prevent Maskne

When people know the cause of their breakouts, the easy answer is to say stop doing that, but thats not an option for many people right now. If you can spend more time at home and limit your mask wear, thats great, but if not, there are still steps you can take to prevent breakouts or at least reduce the severity. Your first step should be to contact your dermatologist to schedule a checkup and discuss your treatment and prevention options, and generally, to ensure maskne is your concern and not something else.

In addition to working with your dermatologist to develop a care plan, you should keep the following maskne prevention tips in mind:
