Talking Therapy For Skin Picking Disorder
Talking therapy is currently thought to be an effective treatment to help change skin picking behaviour.
If you’re offered this, it’ll usually be given through community mental health services.
The most common type of talking therapy offered for skin picking disorder is cognitive behavioural therapy, and may include a technique called habit reversal training.
Habit reversal training works by helping you:
- recognise and be more aware of your skin picking and what’s triggering it
- replace skin picking with a less harmful behaviour

How Do I Know If I Have Dermatillomania
If you have the occasional urge to pick at a scab, it doesnt always mean you have dermatillomania. However, if you find that you want to stop picking at scabs but seem unable to do so, you may be experiencing this disorder.
The next time you find yourself picking at a scab, try to take a moment to assess how youre feeling. Do you feel stressed, anxious, or on edge? How do you feel while youre picking at the scab? What about afterward?
It might be helpful to keep track of these feelings and urges on paper. If you find that your picking is usually triggered by some kind of stress or brings on a sense of relief, you may have dermatillomania.
There are some things you can try on your own to break the habit of picking at your scabs. Most of these focus on keeping your hands and mind busy.
The next timed you feel the urge to pick or find yourself unconsciously picking, try:
- popping bubble wrap
- going for a quick walk around the block
- using fidget cubes or spinners
- squeezing a stress ball
- talking to a close friend or family member about what youre feeling in that moment
There are also things you can do to reduce the temptation to pick, such as:
- making a conscious effort to protect your skin from minor cuts and scabs whenever possible
- throwing away tweezers or other tools you might use to pick at scabs
- placing lotion on scabs to relieve itching
- placing bandage over the scab
- wearing clothing that covers the scab

Use Visualization To Rehearse Life Without The Habit
Every morning when you wake up, take a few minutes and let your imagination go in detail through the day to come. Think of all the times that youd spend performing your bad habit, but in your visualization, show yourself resisting and performing a new healthier habit . Soon your brain will act in accordance because it doesnt know the difference between reality and mental rehearsal.
Why Picking Your Acne Is Bad
You dont have to take our word for it. According to the American Academy of Dermatology Association, popping your own pimples can cause a multitude of problems, including acne scars, more pain, making the acne more noticeable, or even an infection.
Popping the pimple may seem like its expressing the contents out of your skin, but doing it wrong can actually force the zits contents deeper into your skin, which can create inflammation and increase the chances of infection not to mention permanent scarring.

Dont Get Too Close To The Mirror
Have you ever notice that if you go really close to a mirror it automatically makes you want to pick blackheads and pimples?
Theres really no need to get that close to a mirror and if youre trying to stop picking your face, youve got to put some space between you and the mirror.
Starting now, make it a habit to stay at least 1 to 2 feet away from all mirrors. It doesnt mean you have to avoid mirrors, just dont get so close.

I’ve always been a picker pimples, scabs, nails, you name it.
Sometimes I’ll spend what feels like an eternity in front of the mirror, squeezing any bump or blackhead I can find. Even when I’m not consciously trying to pop something, my hands will wander to my face, searching for something to pick.
I thought once I outgrew my acne I’d be able to kick the habit. But it’s become clear to me that my picking is prolonging my years of bad skin.

Heal Your Pimples Faster With Anti
We get impatient with our pimples and want to squeeze them in hopes that they will go away faster. I know this because I used to suffer from the worst cystic acne that would take months to get rid of .
My diet at the time was horrendous. I lived off of coffee, sugar, processed foods, and a lot of dairy products. No wonder my skin was so bad and pimples would just sit on my face forever.
It was only when I started improving my diet by cutting out the junk and processed food, and replacing it with a lot of anti-inflammatory foods did the pimples start to heal so much faster. And when I say faster, Im not talking a week or two for pimples to heal and disappear, but days. Some pimples and spots would disappear over night.
The foods that made the most difference in my skin were vegetables, especially green leafy vegetables. Also, reducing anything that would stress or irritate my skin , helped tremendously too.

Eating a healthy diet makes such a difference in your skin. And you will see, the better your skin gets, the less youll want to mess with it. Picking pimples is not worth the scars and marks it leaves behind.

How Do You Treat Excoriation Disorder
Excoriation disorder can be treated with medications, with psychotherapy, or a combination of both. However, long-term results of treatment have shown mixed and sometimes unimpressive results.15
Medications that can treat excoriation disorder include:
- Antidepressants, especially SSRIs and TCAs
- Opiate antagonists, such as naltrexone
- Atypical antipsychotics, such as olanzapine3,4,15
Medications do not always work. When they do work, they can require patience. For example, antidepressants often take two to six weeks to start working.
Antidepressants, which are most commonly prescribed, can have unpleasant side effects such as nausea, diarrhea, significant weight gain, insomnia, sedation, and loss of libido.3
Finally, medications do not address psychological factors that may contribute to excoriation disorder. For this reason, medications should ideally be prescribed along with psychotherapy.15
There are several different psychotherapy approaches that can help with excoriation disorder:
All three of these therapies can be effective in treating excoriation disorder, at least in the short term. However, results have been inconsistent in the long term.4,15

Excoriated Acne More Than Skin Deep
Acne may be a physical problem, but its origins sometimes lie in an emotional disorder. Excoriated acne is caused by an uncontrollable urge to pick at the skin, which can leave deep acne scars.
You may be tempted to squeeze or pick at a particularly large pimple that erupts on your nose or cheek or chin. But when the urge to pick and pop is overwhelming, and you spend hours scrutinizing and picking at your skin, excoriated acne can result.
Excoriated acne is a type of acne with a unique cause. The word excoriate means to tear or scratch off the skin. Excoriated acne is characterized by an intense, uncontrollable urge to squeeze and pick at every pimple on the skin even a tiny, barely noticeable blemish. Squeezing the occasional pimple isn’t considered excoriated acne it occurs only when the habit becomes constant and uncontrollable.
People with excoriated acne may spend hours gazing into a mirror, inspecting and picking at their blemishes and skin. All that picking and squeezing only makes acne worse, causing red marks and scarring. If its constant, deep acne scars can result and even be permanent.
Open wounds on the skin where a pimple or blemish has been squeezed or picked are typical symptoms of excoriated acne. Those with excoriated acne may use tools to help them pick at their skin, including:
- Knives or pins
- Nail files

Once in a while, you might pull at a hangnail or pick at a scab. But some people pick at their skin repeatedly and constantly. The irritation damages their skin and can lead to sores and scars. Theyre distressed, but they cant seem to stop. They may have trouble tackling their everyday activities.
This condition is called excoriation disorder, and its also known as dermatillomania, psychogenic excoriation, or neurotic excoriation. Its considered a type of obsessive compulsive disorder.
Skin-picking is quite common, said Divya Singh, MD, a psychiatrist at Banner Behavioral Health Hospital in Scottdale, AZ.
The condition is relatively rare and typically begins around the start of puberty. Its more common in females than males, and people with skin-picking disorder often have skin conditions like acne or eczema.
It sometimes starts with a small scab or rash and picking at it means it never heals. Or it could start with picking at the skin around the nails as a way to relieve stress. For some people its a nervous habit. Others are trying to remove a perceived skin flaw. It can come and go over time.
