Which Ingredients Should I Look For
Lactic Acid is my favorite acid because it is both an exfoliant and a humectant. Its also less irritating than glycolic acid. Lactic acid belongs to the alpha hydroxy acid group, which work on the surface of the skin and gently dissolve the bonds between dead skin cells so that they can be removed.
Salicylic Acid is a beta hydroxy acid which helps to dissolve pore clogging plugs and has both anti-inflammatory and skin exfoliating properties. One word of advice is to avoid leave-on treatments with salicylic acid in, as these can feel drying.
Azelaic Acid is a super star ingredient. This naturally occurring acid has anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory and skin exfoliating properties, but make sure to use in moderation as it can also cause some dryness.
How to use acids? Apply a thin layer to a clean face. Remember to introduce acids into your routine slowly and not to over-exfoliate. Choose a safe concentration and make sure you dont experiment with lots of different acids at once.
When will I see the results? If you stick to your routine, you will start seeing results within 35 – 40 days.
Pro tip: If you wear makeup, exfoliation can help you to apply it more smoothly and help your makeup to last longer.
Then Stop The Swelling
If the bump is swollen, using a cold compress can constrict the blood vessels helping to reduce the size of the spot. Use an ice cube wrapped in a clean cloth to to help reduce inflammation, advises Dr Shetty. Hold this onto the skin for a few minutes, every few hours. But, if the spot has already developed and is ready to burst, apply a warm compress to consolidate the pus, she adds.

Hi! I discovered this blog site recently and find it interesting and informative, definitely learned some new things here
I am wondering, since you mentioned you had some previous breakouts, did you get scarring afterwards and how might you have dealt with that? Because your skin looks so smooth and I have some scars after a bad breakout last year, and I didnt know if it may be possible to heal!
Thank you for any tips
Happy to help, Reese Yes, I did get some very shallow scarring. But it is not very visible thankfully. Mostly I got red marks that stayed for quite a while, but it got better with time. Have patience And use SUNSCREEN every day of the year. That will help prevent them from getting permanent. Also, I found that manuka honey is better than any cream or serum for pigmentation issues like these
I agree with B12, when I first started taking it I notice bumps on my forehead and then I research that it cant be taken daily as it can trigger pimples! Agh those stubborn pimples, lol. Thanks for this article very informative on how to treat cystic pimples
Thank you for your comment, Jeannie! Yes B12 sure is tricky for many of us. I have learned that for me the best option is to take small doses of methylcobalamin. I actually open up the capsules and pour out just a bit of it in a glass of water. That way I can take it daily
Ask Your Doctor About Prescription Meds

If you have regularly occurring blind cysts or regular cysts, internal prescription treatment is the best treatment option, although its more of a long-term solution than a quick fix. There are four categories of internal treatments: antibiotics, birth control pills, Accutane, and spironolactone, Dr. Schultz says. The root cause is excess oil stimulated by hormones, and all of these treatments in some way reduce the production of oil or the effect bacteria has on that oil.

Cystic Acnethe Most Severe Form Of Acne You Can Have
Cystic acne appears when cysts develop deep within your skin. This can happen as a result of dry skin cells, oil, and bacteria getting trapped in your pores. While anyone can get cystic acne, it’s most likely to occur within teenagers and adults with hormonal imbalances.
It’s more serious because it produces much larger bumps than what you get with regular acne. It can also be quite painful, which is why you should speak with your dermatologist promptly.
How Do I Prevent Cystic Acne
According to Waldorf, Cysts can be avoided or at least recurrence avoided by not picking or popping, which can make a smaller acne papule or pustule into a cyst.
In addition to keeping your hands off your acne, she recommends keeping your phone surface clean with regular alcohol wipe swipes and not holding it too firmly against your face.
Oh, and Wash. Your. Mask!

Cocktail A Spot Treatment
K, dont get too excitedno topical product will get rid of your cystic zit at home, aside from time . BUT, a cocktail of benzoyl peroxide and 1 percent hydrocortisone cream can help flatten the zit faster, says Dr. Gohara. Both are anti-inflammatories that will help calm the bump, and the less inflammation you have now, the less hyperpigmentation and scarring youll have when the zit heals, she says. So once a day for one week, dab benzoyl peroxide on the cyst, let it dry, and then tap on a thin layer of hydrocortisone cream.

What Causes Cystic Acne
Ugh, bad luck? Just kidding. Maybe. Fundamentally, everyones skin is the sameeveryone has hormonal fluctuations, oil productions, and acne-causing bacteria in their skin that could cause a huge breakout at any time, says Mona Gohara, MD, associate clinical professor at Yale School of Medicine. But, BUT! The sebaceous glands in some people are just naturally more sensitive to these triggers, causing a larger and more frequent inflammatory response.
And if youre someone with cystic acne, heres what that inflammatory response looks like: Your follicle gets pissed off and clogged, trapping the oil and bacteria deep within your pore and causing intense inflammation. That inflammation then ruptures the sides of the pore and leaks bacteria into the surrounding skin, resulting in a big-ass, super-painful cystic zit with no escape route. Honestly, your risk of developing cystic acne only partially has to do with how you take care of your skin, says Dr. Gohara. Translation: Its not your fault.
Is There Hope For Cystic Acne
Absolutely there is hope for getting rid of cystic acne. It is a long road but you can take control! Do not be embarrassed or ashamed about seeking the best treatment for your skin. We know how frustrating a cyst can be, whether your issue is cystic acne, a sebaceous cyst, or a blind pimple that just wont come to a head. You probably already know that squeezing or popping these types of lesions can make things a lot worse. Here are some methods you can try at home to help shrink a cystic acne lesion .
When Is It The Right Time To Visit The Dermatologist To Treat A Cyst

“Immediately! Cystic pimples respond very well to injections when done early,” Nazarian suggests. “If you can see the small bump forming, or the area feels tender, call your derm!” The injections, administered directly into the cyst, contain a dilute corticosteroid. Levin also suggests seeing a derm for an injection if your cyst is painful. “Cortisone is an anti-inflammatory that shrinks the swollen wall of the cyst,” she explains. “Cortisone shots don’t work for the pus-filled pimples and are often reserved for cystic blemishes.”
While they are not long-term solutions, an injection will make the cyst go away within one to two daysor quicker. “Even after the pimple goes away, the little marks may be scar tissue which will still respond to the injection,” Nazarian adds.

How Is Cystic Acne Managed Or Treated
Acne cysts can be difficult to treat. Because they can scar, you should seek help from a dermatologist instead of trying over-the-counter acne products. A dermatologist can teach you how to treat cystic acne.
It can take three months or more to clear up acne cysts. Treatment often involves taking oral antibiotics and applying prescription-strength topical gels or creams to the skin.
Cystic acne treatments include:
- Antibiotic creams, gels solutions and lotions to kill bacteria and decrease inflammation.
- Azelaic acid or salicylic acid to kill bacteria and get rid of excess dead skin cells.
- Benzoyl peroxide to reduce the number of bacteria on the skin.
- Retinoids , vitamin A derivatives that help slough dead skin cells.

Why Essential Oils Are Good For Cystic Acne
Benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, and keratolytic soaps are known conventional acne treatment regiments. These, although producing a positive effect on acne outbreaks, are not without side effects. The science behind how these substances really work is also not known.
However, several observations made using essential oils for acne treatment shows how different compounds of selective oils work on acne. For example: The main constituent of tea tree oil, Terpinen-4, creates an antimicrobial action that works against the bacteria that causes acne. To supplement, once used in appropriate dilution, side effects from essential oils are low, in comparison to conventional acne treatment.
What Are Cystic Pimples
Cystic pimples are a severe form of acne.
These pimples occur when cysts develop deep in the skin. They are often painful, and present as hard bumps on the skin. Typically, cystic pimples are red in color, and there can be swelling in the skin around the actual bump.
Beyond the pain, perhaps the most frustrating aspect of cystic acne is the time it takes for the pimples to clear up. It can take 1 to 4 weeks for a cystic pimple to clear sometimes even longer.

Who Is Most Likely To Get Cystic Or Nodular Acne
Some people are more prone to nodulocystic acne. Acne-related cysts and nodules are usually due to chronic inflammation of the hair follicle and sweat gland, Sruthi Renati, M.D., a dermatologist at Michigan Medicine, tells SELF. Multiple factors can influence this form of acne, including increased oil production by the sweat glands, proliferation of acne-causing bacteria on the skin, or hormones.
Unfortunately a lot of the predisposition for cysts and nodules is simply genetic, Dr. Engelman says. Your skins tendency toward oil production, for instance, is not something you can control. Theres also the influence of stress: These bumps are often caused when there is a hormonal imbalance or during periods of stress, when your body responds by producing more cortisol, Dr. Engelman says. Both hormones overstimulate the sebaceous oil glands, making your body produce more oil that gets stuck in your pores, thus trapping bacteria.
If youve had several large inflamed bumps recently, talk to your doctor about whether hormones might be playing a role in your acne. They might recommend trying a form of hormonal birth control to manage those fluctuations and prevent this type of acne. And although you cant necessarily control every stressful situation in your life or your bodys reaction to them, you can develop some stress management and self-care strategies to make things a little less disruptive.
Are There Supplements You Can Take For Cystic Acne
Studies have shown that there are links between certain vitamin or mineral deficiencies and acne. These include Vitamin A, Vitamin E, Omega-3, Zinc, and Antioxidants. It is important to note, however, that someone switching over to a diet full of fresh vegetables and fruits, will be getting more of these naturally.
Studies into Pantothenic Acid and its effectiveness against acne are beginning to be performed. This study followed participants on a 12-week course of pantothenic acid. In it, it states: One agent that has shown promise in reducing facial acne lesions is pantothenic acid . Pantothenic acid is a water-soluble member of the B-vitamin family that is converted into 4-phosphopantetheine, which is then converted to coenzyme A via adenosine triphosphate . Pantothenic acid regulates epidermal barrier function and keratinocytes differentiation via CoA metabolism.
So Pantothenic Acid is Vitamin B5, which is a water-soluble vitamin. This means any excess in your body does not get stored but is removed
I do not recommend looking for Vitamin A supplements and consuming high doses of them. Isotretinoin is a Vitamin A derivative and you can see from the chart above what high doses can do. Vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin, so whatever you take is absorbed by fat and stored in the liver. Too much can cause liver damage.

Trying To Extract Cystic Acne At Home Will Only Make It Worse
Dr. Braue has stressed this a number of times so its worth repeating dont mess with cystic acne. It doesnt matter if youve watched hours of pimple extraction videos. If you need an area drained, leave that to a professional.
Picking or popping cystic acne can lead to scarring and that can lead to dyspigmentation. Also, when you do this, not everything comes out and you end up spreading some of the inflammation around which isnt ideal either. If youre considering draining an acne cyst at home, I definitely dont encourage it.
S To Getting Rid Of A Cystic Pimple Fast

There are few things more frustrating than going to bed with clear skin and waking up with a mammoth zit on your face. And if it’s a cystic blemish the kind that’s super sore and swollen and never comes to a head it can be especially maddening, since it seems like all you can do is wait, spackle it with concealer, and tell people it’s a mosquito bite. While it’s true that nothing short of a dermatologist-administered cortisone shot will get rid of a deep zit, there are some at-home steps you can take to bring down the swelling and redness.
