How To Repair Skin From Acne Scars

Tea Tree Oil + Aloe Vera

HOW TO REPAIR ACNE SCARS & HYPERPIGMENTATION

Tea tree oil/aloe vera gel/organic aloe vera gel

This is one of the greatest and my favorite duos. Aloe vera gel is one of my favorite cosmetic products because of its several advantages, including combating acne, calming irritated skin, and removing dark spots and acne blemishes. It includes polysaccharides and gibberellins, which aid to increase the skins healing capacity and level out your complexion, while the antioxidant qualities help to repair damaged skin cells and stimulate collagen synthesis.

And who doesnt appreciate the benefits of tea tree oil? It is, after all, one of the top Ph.D. holders in the field of acne treatment. It has antiseptic, antifungal, and antibacterial qualities that may help prevent acne and treat inflammatory acne in as little as two nights.

Now, aloe vera gel alone may assist with acne and its scars, but when combined with tea tree oil, the combination can help protect the skin against more severe pimples that can lead to acne scarring. Also, dont try using tea tree oil on its own. Although you may not notice immediate effects, it is quite powerful and drying to your skin over time.

What is the best way to utilize it? Combine 2-3 drops of Tea Tree oil with half a spoon of aloe vera gel and apply the mixture to a clean face as a spot therapy. If you wish to, leave it overnight or for at least 30-60 minutes. If you have access to an aloe vera plant, fresh aloe vera gel is preferable.

Are There Any Tests Performed To Diagnose The Type Of Acne Scar

A visual examination by a dermatologist is enough to determine a diagnosis. Your dermatologist may also determine how severe your acne scarring is. One measurement system has four grades of acne scarring: macular, mild, moderate and severe. Grade one, macular, is a scar thats red but flat. Grade two, mild, is a scar that can easily be covered by makeup or facial hair. Grade three, moderate, is obvious at a social distance. It is not as easily covered by makeup or facial hair. Finally, grade four, severe, is scarring that is very evident at a social distance greater than 50 centimeters . It is unlikely that facial hair or makeup will completely cover up these scars.

Give Microneedling With Radio Frequency A Try

Microneedling creates small, narrow, superficial areas of mechanical injury that work to stimulate the repair response, increase collagen production, and improve scar appearance. When combined with radio frequency, it becomes a bit more aggressivewith energy being released deeper within the skin to trigger a more robust inflammatory and collagen response.

Luckily, there’s a bevy of gels, creams, and treatments that can bring blemish-induced discoloration down. Dr. Sarkar says that collagen-building ingredients will generally help acne scars, so she looks to retinoids, vitamin C, and alpha hydroxy acids when treating her patients.

“Retinoids, a vitamin A derivative, help to increase collagen, even out skin tone, and prevent future acne,” she explains. “Vitamin C is a brightening agent and an antioxidant, and it has been shown to build collagen as well. Glycolic, lactic, and mandelic acids help to resurface the skin to even out skin tone.”

Up Your Vitamin C Intake

Vitamin C helps rebuild collagen, which can help reduce the appearance of facial scars. Kitchen Cures, a Readers Digest book, recommends the vitamin because it strengthens cell walls and can help protect your skin from scarring that blemishes can cause. Try to incorporate these foods that are rich in vitamin C into your diet. Aim to get 250 to 500 milligrams of vitamin C per day. You can also look for products that contain vitamin C that you can apply directly to the scar.

One of the best automatic remedies for removing tracers is the use of lemon juice, as lemons have skin bleaching properties that help lighten the marks of artificially individualized results.

You can combine lemon and water with equal amount, then apply this lemon juice directly on the surface stains, wash off the surface after about 15-20 minutes. However, you should avoid applying to the surrounding area. You need to remember to moisturize immediately after rinsing off the lemon juice, because the citric acid in lemons can make you dry.

How Does Acne Cause Scars

Your skin is your largest organ. It has three main layers. They are, starting with the outermost, the epidermis, the dermis and the hypodermis. The layers protect your fragile insides from the elements, from UV rays and bacteria, and they also help produce vitamin D thanks to sunlight. Any area with sebaceous glands is prone to acne especially the face, back and chest.

Acne scars are the result of inflammation of acne blemishes. The acne pore swells and a breakdown occurs in the wall of the pore. Some acne blemishes are small and the scars created are shallow and heal quickly. Sometimes the contents of blemishes spill into the surrounding tissue and cause deeper scars. The skins response is to repair the scar by forming new collagen fibers.

Acne scars take on two main forms: either a scar develops when there is a loss of tissue, resulting in an indentation in the surface of the skin or, a scar develops that is raised on the surface of the skin. This type of acne scar, in fact, is a sign that your skin is doing its job but, perhaps, too well. Your skin creates collagen to help heal the wound the acne but, if it makes too much collagen, raised scars form.

Keep in mind that just because you have acne, that doesnt mean youll get scars. And if you do , the good news is that not all acne scars are permanent! Treatments are available. Some treatments nearly remove the scars while others help the skin heal itself with its own collagen.

Why Do Acne Scars Happen

Scarring occurs as a result of injury to the skin and excess oil production, bacteria, and inflammation.

Zeichner explains, Inflammation in the skin tells our pigment producing cells to become overactive, explaining why pimples leave behind dark spots.

The hyperpigmentation that remains isnt permanent, but it can be uncomfortable for some people. It can also present differently, depending on your complexion.

is more common in patients who have darker skin tones, he adds. Whereas, fair skinned patients are often left with pink or red spots in areas where there used to be pimples. This post-inflammatory erythema heals on its own over several weeks.

Although most superficial breakouts heal on their own without leaving a significant mark, there are others that leave a more noticeable scar behind.

This is why its advised to avoid picking pimples. It can lead to more injury to the skin, which can lead to a greater chance of a scar, Garshick says.

What Are Acne Scars

A generalised term, acne scarring can be used to refer to a multitude of different marks that a breakout may leave behind. “Acne scars come in different forms, including rolling, boxcar and ice-pick scars,” explains Pamela Marshall, clinical aesthetician and founder of Mortar & Milk.

While most types of scarring can be treated via various methods, there is one subset that requires specialist treatment, as aesthetician and founder of West Room Aesthetics Dija Ayodele explains. “Be wary that keloid scarring, which darker skin can be prone to, can make you contraindicated to treatment that works on the basis of inducing a mild trauma to the skin, such as chemical peels and microneedling. If youve got this type of scarring, it’s best to see a doctor or dermatologist that can provide steroid shots or advise on removing with surgery.”

Can I Permanently Remove Acne Scars

Dr. Garshick says the potential removal of acne scars typically depends on the type of scar and the extent of the scarring. “For example, faint discoloration may fade with time and can certainly be improved with topical treatments alone, while deep ‘ice pick’ scarring won’t go away with topicals,” she says.

It’s best to approach acne scars with multiple different treatment modalities that address the different components, so work with your dermatologist to sort out the best regimen for your level of scarring.

In addition to the aforementioned ingredients that you should add to your scar-reducing regimen, Miami-based board-certified dermatologist Annie Gonzalez, M.D., puts equal emphasis on what to avoid when treating acne scars. She steers her patients clear of cleansers and toners containing alcohol, which, she says, can dry out the skin and make the sebaceous glands produce more oil to compensate, thus causing acne and potentially resulting scars.

“It’s also important to note that using too many treatments at once, using extraction tools by yourself, and over-exfoliating can make acne scars worse,” says Gonzalez. “Doing these things could cause inflammation, which may lead to a new acne outbreak. In addition, the skin may become red, which may highlight the appearance of an acne scar.”

What Can I Expect If I Have Acne Scars

Acne is very common. Its likely that most people you know either have or have had it at some point, probably when they were teenagers. Expect to have to make choices choices about if you will or will not get treatment and choices about the type of treatment. Expect to have the scars for most if not all of your life if you decide not to get treatment. Even with treatment, acne scars are difficult to heal. Theres no 100% guarantee that the acne scars will be completely gone. But most treatments reduce the size of the acne scars and make them less visible.

What Causes Pitted Acne Scars

Pitted acne scars are caused by severe acne. As the most common type of acne scarring, they are a result of the inability to regenerate tissue.

Severe acne flare-ups that continue over time will increase the chances that this scarring takes hold.

Thus, the best way to prevent acne scarring is to actually prevent acne from occurring in the first place.

Dealing with acne can be frustrating, to say the least. And when you throw acne scars into the mix, it can get even more complicated. As with most scars on the body, there’s no magic serum or tonic to make acne scars magically disappear overnight. The same is true for pitted acne scars, the ones that tend to leave behind a hollow, “pit-like” impression in the skin.

Despite being among the most common skincare conditions, both acne and acne scars can look, feel, and respond to treatments differently for each individual. So, we’ve tapped double board-certified dermatologist Brendan Camp for expert insight into managing, treating, and eliminating the pitted acne scars that breakouts can leave behind.

Below, Camp shares 11 recommendations for treating pitted acne scars.

Use Retinoids To Boost Collagen Production

Retinoids treat acne by regulating or normalizing the process of cell turnover, which prevents blocked pores and the formation of acne bumps.”The long-term use of retinoids is thought to help with collagen production,” explains Camp. He recommends Differin gel, which used to be a prescription adapalene product but is now available to purchase in stores.

Natural Remedies For Acne Scars

There arent any guaranteed natural remedies to eradicate your acne scars completely.

Your own unique skin type will determine which remedies work. There are a few measures that can be taken to reduce your acne scars severity and prevent future scarring. For stronger, more permanent solutions, consider consulting a dermatologist.

Over-the-counter creams and gels

There are a number of OTC creams that can help with your skins irritation and discomfort. Some creams may reduce the swelling of acne scars and reduce their color to make them less noticeable.

Such creams are not single-use remedies. They must be used consistently to have any noticeable effect.

There are also OTC medicinal creams that can kill bacteria on your skin and reduce oiliness. Look for creams that contain the following:

  • Retinoids
  • Antibiotics
  • Salicylic acid

These aim to reduce irritation of the skin, which may also reduce the redness of the acne scars.

Research your topical creams thoroughly. Some lotions contain chemicals that can dry out your skin. This may further irritate your acne scars.

Expensive moisturizers with lots of fragrance and additives can actually make your scars redder and make them more noticeable.

Kitchen treatments

If you dont want to try over-the-counter creams, you may already have a few things in your kitchen that can be repurposed into acne scar treatment.
