Eliminate Pressure On Your Back
Anything that results in increased sweating and friction on your back, such as backpacks, sports gear, and back braces, can cause back acne, which is often referred to as acne mechanica, says Dr. Shah.
Shah recommends choosing a backpack thats lightweight and fits properly to minimize friction and irritation.
If you wear sports equipment that puts pressure on your back, dont wear the item for longer than you need to, or wear a clean cotton T-shirt underneath to reduce prolonged pressure and friction.
Skin And Hair Care Products
Shampoos and conditioners are particularly notorious for causing back acne, especially if theyre formulated with occlusive ingredients such as oil, butters, or other comedogenic substances. Hair conditioner is meant to be very occlusive, so your hair is hydrated and moisturized, Dr. Sobel says. However, if its not rinsed off, it can lead to bacne flare-ups.
The Fix: To curb bacne, wash your body after shampooing and conditioning to rinse away these pore-clogging ingredients. Alternatively, seek out hair care products that are specifically made to prevent body acne, such as SEEN or Vanicream.
Swap Out Your Shower Products
Start with a benzoyl peroxide body wash:
Nearly all of the dermatologists cited benzoyl peroxide body wash as their top suggestion for clearing bacne, since it aggressively kills the bacteria that cause you to break out back there. But be warned: It can stain your towels and clothing, so rinse thoroughly when done, and maybe wear a white t-shirt to bed afterwards.

Causes Of Acne Vulgaris
Acne vulgaris is usually caused due to hormonal changes in the body that forms clogged pores, dirt, and bacterial accumulation that leads to pimples in large numbers. Generally, it is said that acne occurrence is the outcome of puberty but acne vulgaris develops anywhere on the body at any age. Some face acne formation during the menstrual cycle begins.
When you are at the start of puberty, the hormone causes androgen hormone to increase in large amounts causing your skin to be more oily and accumulating sebum production along with first and bacteria. This sebum, dirt, and bacteria altogether clog the pores thus causing acne production.
When you age-old and enter your adulthood the hormones that cause acne may decrease with age and so the acne will also not develop on the skin. But many people especially women continue production of those hormones and some face hormonal changes due to PCOD or PCOS that causes acne in their adulthood too.
Acne vulgaris can also be caused due to hormonal changes in the body during pregnancy or during the menstrual cycle, due to medications, due to the application of makeup products and creams, or due to some hormonal changes in disease.
What Causes Back Acne
There are many reasons people get acne, so its important to know why and how pimples form.
Your body produces an oil called sebum. Its made in the glands connected to your hair follicles. Sebum moves up the hair follicles to add moisture to your skin and hair.
Pimples form when extra sebum and dead skin cells build up. This buildup blocks skin pores and bacteria. When the hair follicle wall swells out, it forms a whitehead pimple. When the clogged pore gets exposed to air, blackhead pimples form.
Some common causes of acne are:
- Genetics. Trouble with acne can run in your family.
- Medications. Acne can develop as a side effect of some medicines like certain antidepressants.
- Hormones. Hormonal changes in the teenage years are often the cause of acne. But for women past puberty, pimple outbreaks can be linked to hormonal changes that happen during menstruation and pregnancy.
- Sweat. Sweat, especially if its trapped under tight clothing, can make acne worse.
- Stress. Stress isnt a direct cause of acne, but it could be a contributing factor.
Some research shows that foods you eat could be linked to acne.
According to the American Academy of Dermatology, there is some evidence that certain carbohydrates known to increase your blood sugar levels can also contribute to acne. For some, dairy products might also be a trigger.
In most cases, you can get rid of acne by making some lifestyle changes and using at-home remedies. Here are some things you can do to get rid of back acne:

Cleanse With The Appropriate Ph
A cleanser with the appropriate potential Hydrogen level, which refers to the amount of acid in a substance, is what you should clean your back with. The pH scale ranges from one to 14, and, according to Penford, you should look for a soap which has a pH in line with your skin, around 5.5. The lower numbers are acidic, while the upper levels are considered alkaline, or non-acidic.
A wash like Sebamed is a good option, as it creates a mild lather that will cleanse without stripping the skin. For even further penetration, keep the cleanser on your back for at least five minutes, almost like you would with a mask for your face.

How Do You Treat Back And Chest Acne
If youre experiencing severe body acne with deep, painful cysts, its best to partner with a dermatologist so you can develop a unique plan for ongoing care. That being said, for mild to moderate body acne, some of the basic treatments used to treat acne on the face can be used for the back and chest. Heres how to get rid of body acne for good:
1. Use an acne cleanser
While any gentle soap or body wash can help remove dirt and oils, there are specific products geared toward fighting body acne breakouts. Dr. Thompson suggests starting with products that include benzoyl peroxide.
Normally, I favor milder benzoyl peroxide washes as stronger washes can cause more dryness and skin irritation for the face. Fortunately, the trunk tends to be less sensitive with treatment, Dr. Thompson said.
2. Try a topical retinoid
Whether a prescription agent or over-the-count adapalene gel, this is another great option for treating body acne. Products like Differin gel and Retin-A play a crucial role in the treatment of acne by regulating skin cell turnover and reducing inflammation deep in the skin to not only clear but prevent future pimples.
3. Remember sun protection
4. Develop good workout habits
Its great to put in the time for workouts, but dont hang out too long in your sweaty clothes. Make sure you shower and change clothes right after working outor doing anything that gets you sweaty.
5. Resist the urge to pop, pick or scrub acne
6. Modify your diet

Clean Your Skin Gently
Its tempting to scrub your back hard, especially since that skin is thicker than some other areas of your body. However, this additional friction can irritate your skin and leave you vulnerable to breakouts. You especially want to avoid scrubbing hard when you have acne on your back as you can cause further irritation. This irritation can cause your acne to take longer to heal.
If youre currently experiencing back acne, use gentle cleaners designed for acne. The American Academy of Dermatology Association recommends letting the cleanser sit on your skin for a couple of minutes to help the medicine better treat the backs thick skin. However, keep the instructions on the cleanser in mind as well.
If you want a gentle cleanser that uses natural ingredients, Innate Skins Clear Skin AHA/BHA Exfoliating Cleanser works well for the face, neck, or can be used on your upper back. It can help unclog pores and treat blackheads and whiteheads.

Tight Clothing Or A Heavy Backpack Could Also Be The Culprit
“Tight clothing mixed with friction and excess moisture, such as sweat, can lead to the development of acne. The combination of friction, heat, and covered skin may result in the development of a form of acne called acne mechanica. The friction can irritate the skin and disrupt the surface, which can clog the pores with dead skin cells and lead to inflammation,” Dr. Jeremy Fenton of Schweiger Dermatology Group in NYC told Byrdie. “In my case, this is a perfect explanation, since the super-hot NYC summer weather was causing me to sweat, which, coupled with rubbing bra straps, led to a spattering of breakouts.
To prevent acne mechanica on you back, make sure your clothing and undergarments aren’t too tight and try not to carry heavy loads in backpacks or purses for extended periods of time. Wearing a clean cotton t-shirt beneath your regular clothes or sports uniform can also help keep your skin protected.
