Many teens and young adults who experienced acne back in the day were told to stop eating certain foods such as chocolate and crisps. This is because it was commonly thought that a bad diet was a key cause of acne and blemished skin. Studies have debunked this somewhat, as the role of surging hormones as a cause of teen and adult acne is more understood.

However, diet does play a role in the cause, severity, and management of acne, as it does in every facet of our health. While its not as simple as put the chocolate down!, there are acne food causes to be wary of. There are also some skin-loving foods you can eat to reduce the risk and severity of acne.

Lets start with the no list before discussing the yes list.

According to board-certified dermatologist Dr Jennifer Chwalek, it can be beneficial for those who are having an acne flare-up to avoid high glycemic index foods because the subsequent spike in blood sugar levels can trigger a cascade of effects to produce oil and clog pores that can set the stage for acne.

Dr Joshua Zeichner, dermatologist and director of cosmetic and clinical research in dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital, also suggested limiting high glycemic index foods from your diet if you are experiencing a breakout, as these foods may promote acne breakouts in predisposed individuals.

The high sugar load activates messengers in the bloodstream that in turn promote skin inflammation, he told The Independent.

In addition to high-sugar foods, dairy can also have a negative impact on acne breakouts, according to Dr Zeichner.

Cows milk, particularly skim milk, has been associated with acne breakouts, he said. It is thought to be due to a high-sugar content within the milk and perhaps due to circulating hormones from the lactating cow.

Interestingly, yoghurt, and cheese have not been associated with acne flares.

However, as pointed out by Dr Chwalek, while some studies show a tendency for worse acne in susceptible individuals who consume more dairy, it is not true for all people.

Overall, as Dr Palm points out, generally speaking, food elimination diets are not recommended for the vast majority of acne patients.

But What About The Sugars In Fruit And Veggies

The Role Of Pure Chocolate

Previous studies looking at chocolate and acne used sweetened chocolate that contained sugar, milk, and other ingredients that themselves can aggravate the skin condition, says researcher Caroline Caperton, MD, MSPH, senior clinical research fellow in dermatology at the University of Miami.

The fact that the current study used unadulterated chocolate, made of 100% cocoa, is a major advantage, she says.

Some of the ingredients in pure chocolate that might exacerbate acne are caffeine and its cousin theobromine, which is known to have pore-clogging properties, Caperton tells WebMD.

American Academy of Dermatology President Ronald L. Moy, MD, professor of dermatology at the University of California, Los Angeles David Geffen School of Medicine, tells WebMD it’s way too soon to make suggestions to patients based on such a small study.

“What I tell patients with acne is that for some, chocolate plays a role, and for others it does not,” he says. It can be a little tricky figuring out if chocolate is causing you to break out as pimples may not appear until hours or days after eating the candy.

The researchers are now planning a study of 28 people with acne in which some will be offered up to 6 ounces of pure chocolate and others will be given no chocolate at all.

Why Chocolate Causes Acne

Nobody knows for sure why cocoa causes acne. In an earlier post, I talked about a study that shows eating chocolate primes the immune system to have a stronger reaction against P. Acnes bacteria .

In this study, the researchers asked people to eat 50g of chocolate for 4 days. The researchers then drew blood from the participants and exposed it to P. Acnes bacteria. They showed that 4 days after eating chocolate the immune system released far more inflammatory cytokines in response to the bacteria.

In English, this means that exposure to the bacteria caused more inflammation, which can trigger acne.
