Things You Can Try If You Have Acne
These self-help techniques may be useful:
- Do not wash affected areas of skin more than twice a day. Frequent washing can irritate the skin and make symptoms worse.
- Wash the affected area with a mild soap or cleanser and lukewarm water. Very hot or cold water can make acne worse.
- Do not try to “clean out” blackheads or squeeze spots. This can make them worse and cause permanent scarring.
- Avoid using too much make-up and cosmetics. Use water-based products that are described as non-comedogenic. This means the product is less likely to block the pores in your skin.
- Completely remove make-up before going to bed.
- If dry skin is a problem, use a fragrance-free water-based emollient.
- Regular exercise cannot improve your acne, but it can boost your mood and improve your self-esteem. Shower as soon as possible once you finish exercising as sweat can irritate your acne.
- Wash your hair regularly and try to avoid letting your hair fall across your face.
Although acne cannot be cured, it can be controlled with treatment.
If you develop mild acne, it’s a good idea to speak to a pharmacist for advice.
Several creams, lotions and gels for treating spots are available to buy from pharmacies.
Products containing a low concentration of benzoyl peroxide may be recommended, but be careful as this can bleach clothing.
If your acne is severe or appears on your chest and back, it may need to be treated with antibiotics or stronger creams that are only available on prescription.
Tips To Prevent Shoulder Acne
Shoulder acne can be easily prevented with a few self-care measures, such as:
- Wearing suitable clothes: It is best to wear loose-fitting clothes, especially when exercising. Opt for clothes made of sweat-wicking fabrics such as cotton. Avoid using bleach to wash your clothes as it can irritate the skin and aggravate acne. Instead, use fabric softeners to avoid friction from clothes.
- Reducing pressure on the shoulders: Avoid the use of backpacks or shoulder pads that can put undue pressure on your shoulders and rub against them, causing acne.
- Avoiding irritating skin care products: Identify the products your skin is sensitive to and avoid their use. These products include soaps and body gels that contain artificial fragrances that irritate the skin.
Shower Immediately After A Workout
‘The bacteria responsible for causing acne thrive on sweaty skin,’ explains Dr. Kluk. ‘It’s important to remove your gym clothes and shower as soon as possible after a workout.’
Even if you haven’t had a hard core work out, cleaning off any sweat is key. ‘Shower immediately after sweating. Acne isnât related to cleanliness but we certainly know that sweat can aggravate the skin. Hair shampoos and conditioners can leave residue on your back which can clog pores and cause bacne. Take extra care when rinsing hair and gently wash the back after hair washing ‘ says Dr Danso.
That means no sitting on the end of your bed, scrolling through Instagram, trying to muster up the energy to jump in. We’re talking ASAP, people.

How To Treat Back Acne
You dont need a medical degree to tackle bacne, because the treatment for regular acne, folliculitis, and acne mechanica are pretty much the same. The same ingredients that help acne on your face, like salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide, can help on body acne, too. Keeping the area clean and exfoliated is a given as well.
As with most things, prevention is far more effective than treatment, Finney says. Always make sure to shower as quickly as possible after working out and change into dry clothes to prevent sweat from sticking around on your skin . Keep using skincare products, like body washes and exfoliators, even after your bacne has cleared up to keep it from coming back. Acne-focused skincare can work wonders on mild to moderate cases of bacne, but if you have severe outbreaks or notice that its not going away despite treatment, see a dermatologist. There might be underlying issues like hormones or diet at play. But for now, start with these 17 best back acne treatments to help get rid of annoying bacne and prevent it in the future.
Dexterity issues be damned, a spray containing salicylic acid can help you treat hard-to-reach areas like your mid-back or between your shoulder blades. This version is a leave-on treatment, which means you spray it on after your shower and let it go to work without washing it off.
Is Back Acne Hormonal

Your hormones might also be to blame for bad bouts of back acne. According to Medical News Today, high testosterone levels can contribute to acne by increasing the production of sebum, which may then lead to blocked pores. Falling estrogen levels related to the menstrual cycle can also trigger breakouts.

Try A New Laundry Detergent
Washing your clothes is a must for keeping germs at bay, but if you have oily skin, it can also help prevent acne. However, laundry detergent can sometimes have the opposite effect by causing acne.
This can happen from certain types of detergents that tend to irritate the skin. These include products with fragrances and dyes. When you wear a shirt thats been washed with allergenic detergents, you could put your chest area and other parts of your body at risk for a breakout.
Look for laundry detergents labeled as hypoallergenic.
Use Antibacterial Body Wash
If you work out regularly, you must use an antibacterial body wash or a non-drying, antibacterial soap. Look for a product containing tea tree essential oil as it is antimicrobial and gets rid of bacteria as well as fungi. Apply the soap to wet shoulders and back and scrub with a loofah or brush. Leave the lather on the skin for a few minutes before rinsing with warm water.

Steroid Acne On The Shoulders
Steroid acne is inflammation of the skin that occurs after injection of steroids. Both prescription and illegal steroid drugs can cause steroid acne. The greatest number of pimples and papules occur on the shoulders, but there are also breakouts on the torso, buttocks, hands, and feet, with less involvement of the face. Steroid acne usually clears up when steroid use is discontinued.
How Acne Is Formed
Inflammation caused by hormonal changes forms the red spots on our skin.
Acne is commonly found on your face, neck, chest, back and shoulders. Its because there are more oil glands on the skin of these areas. The function of oil glands is to excrete oil substance to lubricate your skin to make it look glowing.
When your body produces an excess amount of sebum and dead skin cells due to hormonal changes, the two can block your hair follicles and form soft plug, which is a favourable environment for bacteria to thrive. When the clogged hair follicles get infected and result in inflammation, the follicle wall will bulge and form a pimple.

What Is Back Acne
Back acne, or bacne, is acne vulgaris on the back, usually the upper back. Acne vulgarisor acne for shortis a skin condition that affects the pores. Pores have a hair follicle and sebaceous glandor oil glandat the bottom and an opening at the top. The oilcalled sebumflows up to the skin surface to moisturize the skin. As it travels upwards, it carries dead skin cells and debris with it out of the pore. Acne occurs when the oil, dead skin, and debris are trapped in the pore, forming a plug. The clogged pore can also trap bacteria, causing inflammation.
The upper back is an area with more oil glands than most other body sites. So, its a common place for acne to develop. Other commonly affected sites include the face, neck, chest and shoulders. Like these other sites, back acne comes in two forms.
The first type of back acne is non-inflammatory acne characterized by the following types of blemishes:
- Blackheads, which are clogged pores that remain open at the skin surface. The medical name for them is open comedones.
- Whiteheads, which are clogged pores that are closed at the skin surface. They are called closed .
Back acne can also be inflammatory. This type of acne includes the following types of blemishes:
- Pimples, which are raised, tender red or pink bumps. They are called papules when they dont have and a white tip. When they are pus-filled with a white tip, they are .
- Nodules, which are large, solid, painful lumps deep under the skin
What Is Body Acne

Body acne refers to any type of acne that appears on the back and upper half of the body, including the chest and shoulders. These breakouts are classified similarly to acne on your face, and are often accompanied by oily skin and scarring. While acne can appear anywhere on your body , it tends to concentrate on the back, chest and shoulders where there is a higher density of hair follicles and oil- and sweat-producing glands. To make matters worse, the pores and hair follicles on your body are much larger than those found on your face, and the skin on your back is extremely thick. These factors heighten the potential for dirt and oil to become trapped, block pores and cause breakouts.

Acne Mechanica On The Shoulders
The easy-to-treat form of shoulder acne is a condition known as acne mechanica. In this form of shoulder acne, the initial cause of irritation to the skin is the accumulation of sweat underneath shoulder pads, brassiere straps, or tight-fighting clothing. The skin responds to irritation by creating more sebum. The oily sebum builds up in pores that become clogged, resulting in whiteheads, blackheads, and pimples.
It is important to distinguish this form of shoulder acne from folliculitis, which occurs in hair follicles, especially after shaving the shoulders.
It can also occur after use of a hot tub or by wearing a wetsuit. Folliculitis is more likely to be painful than acne and is caused by a different microorganism. Folliculitis causes raised swellings with a yellow center, and acne does not. Consulting a doctor is usually necessary for treatment of folliculitis.
The treatment for acne mechanica on the shoulders is uncomplicated. All that is necessary is to stop the accumulation of sweat on the skin. This can mean placing cloth over shoulder pads or buying a better-fitting brassiere.
The best acne product for treating breakouts on the shoulders is benzoyl peroxide. Since the skin on the shoulders is tough and thick, benzoyl peroxide is less likely to cause inflammation or irritation, and more likely to kill the acne bacteria in pores. Just dont begin benzoyl peroxide treatment before changing the wardrobe malfunction that is keeping the skin of the shoulders irritated.
