How I Cured My Adult Hormonal Cystic Acne Naturally (no accutane)

Deep cleaning pores to remove sebum , skin cells and debris can help take your cystic acne removal to the next level and help prevent future breakouts.

At AMAE in the Troy, MI area we offer three treatments that can be customized specifically to treat cystic acne in adults and teens.

We offer the popular ZO Acne Intervention Facial, that contains specially formulated clinical-grade salicylic acid serums that treat cystic acne without irritating skin. Clinical grade acne medication is applied during the treatment that penetrates the pores and kills the pimple-causing bacteria, while necessary extractions are done by our skilled aesthetician or nurse as needed.

We also offer DiamondGlow that uses vacuum and high-pressure water jets to deeply clean out pores. Then salicylic acid and other proprietary bacteria-fighting ingredients are injected deep into the pores.

And, for patients for whom salicylic acid is not appropriate we also offer the Nordlys Ellipse IPL laser acne treatments at our Troy, MI area Med Spa. This advanced pulsed light device eradicates acne, by using a combination of fractional and infrared lasers in one comfortable procedure.

Cystic Acne Treatment: Antibiotics

If you see a dermatologist for cystic acneand experts agree that over-the-counter remedies are not sufficient for cystic pimplestheir first option will likely be an oral antibiotic, says Adarsh Vijay Mudgil, MD, a New York City-based dermatologist. Antibiotics attack the underlining bacteria that may be causing and perpetuating the acne.

The relief can be immediate. It works as an anti-inflammatory, says Mudgil. Tetracycline-type antibioticslike minocycline or doxycyclineare the most common choices. Some dermatologists also use topical antibiotics.

How Stress Affects Hormonal Acne

No matter what type of stress were talking about, they all activate our stress response system aka HPA axis .

Theres a lot that the HPA axis does, but for the sake of simplicity, were going to focus on just one aspect: the adrenals.

When were stressed, the adrenals release anti-inflammatory hormones, such as cortisol.

As cortisol increases a bunch of other processes are triggered. These processes can end up contributing to acne. Below is a brief overview of how that can happen.

1. Excess oil production

During stressful times, the adrenal glands stimulate the sebaceous glands to make more sebum.

This means more oil on your skin. Long term, this can worsen clogged pores, and make each pimple larger and more painful .

2. Gut Dysfunction

Blood flow to the gut is reducedwhen theres a lot of stress.

Since blood carries nutrients, this means that chronic stress leads to chronically reduced blood flow to the gut.

And with less nutrients going to the gut, inflammatory conditions like leaky gut and gut dysbiosis develop.

This is majorly important for acne because some studies show that people who struggle with acne have less diverse gut bacteria than people who dont .

3. Hormonal imbalances

When were stressed, we need more glucose in the blood as a source of energy.

And interestingly, as cortisol increases, it prevents insulin from doing its job .

This increase in androgens triggers inflammation which leads to increased sebum production, clogged pores, added stress and so on.

Cut Back On High Glycemic Foods

Consider cutting back on the amount of food you eat with a high glycemic index, such as honey, rice, cereal, and white bread. These foods digest quickly, so they spike your blood sugar and insulin levels. Studies show that a low glycemic diet can help to reduce inflammation, stabilize insulin levels and positively influence sebum production, so reducing your intake of these foods can help combat your hormonal acne.

Sulfur For Cystic Jawline Acne

Back to the fire and brimstone reference.. sulfur was originally called brimstone. It has been used to treat skin and health ailments for centuries. As for the fire, I use fire to sanitize my lancet, before removing a comedone.

When were talking about sulfur for acne, its not really break-through science, as NERDs marketing suggests. Others have been using sulfur for years to reduce inflammation and dry out acne. Sulfur is shown to be most effective on Asian skin, but it worked for my caucasian skin.

Sulfur is in fact an antioxidant and strong anti-inflammatory, so perhaps the theories we visited earlier about antioxidants helping rid skin of acne werent completely off-base.

But wait Sulfur is totally OTC.

Googled it: You can straight up buy 10% sulfur ointment for . Who knew?

Between ointments and balms, sulfur is actually really easy to get for a decent price.

If youre not down for weird thick ointments or solid bars , it turns out that luxury skincare brand Kate Somerville has their own sulfur treatment liquid for just $24.

Other stand-out products include Mario Badescus drying mask for $18, Peter Thomas Roths Sulfur Cooling Mask and Dr. Dennis Grossmans Clarifying Colloidal Sulfur Mask.

In retrospect, I remember trying an Alaskan Glacial Mud Mask the last time I went off BP and it did dry out my acne. Others have had the same experience when visiting Iceland. Its not because of the mud in the mask or the Iceland airits the sulfur.

What Not To Do And What Not To Buy

While topical products may help to keep acne-prone skin healthy, Dr. Kluk is keen to stress that serums and skincare alone wont bring severe cystic acne under control. However, she does recommend sticking to a few skincare principles while on your path to clearer skinâ¦

  • Never try to pick or squeeze cysts. This can lead to infection and increase the risks of scarring. Yes, we know itâs tempting, but you will not win.
  • Dont attempt to scrub or exfoliate the skin. This can increase swelling and redness.
  • Use a mild cleanser and moisturiser, and a sunscreen in the morning too. This may be all that is necessary whilst you complete your course of medication.

As Thomas adds, some products may actually contribute to the formation of blockages in the pores, ultimately exasperating your acne. She advises ditching the oils, balms and richer creams, looking instead for products both skincare and makeup marked non-comedogenic, . âAlso avoid overly drying products,â she says. âDrying out the surface will rarely affect a cyst, and really just causes more redness and irritation.â

Retinol Treatment For Acne

There is a lot of controversial talk in the clean beauty industry about retinol is it clean, or is it harmful? Its important here to remember that everyone is at a different place in their skincare journey and has the option to choose what is right for them. My doctor recommended for the type of acne I was dealing with to try using prescription-strength retinol. Retinol works by clearing clogged pores of dead skin cells and acts as an anti-inflammatory for cystic-type acne. I have been using this every other night for five weeks, and I do believe it is working. Im willing to give it a full 8 weeks before I reevaluate what I recommend every customer that tries a new product. If you are curious about over the counter retinol, there are a few cleaner options on the market.

Stop Touching Your Face And Chin

You probably already know the importance of cleansing your skin at night to remove acne-causing bacteria that may have manifested itself during the day, but you may not realize that minimizing the number of times you touch your face on a daily basis is also crucial. As Rouleau explained to me, because all blemishes are related to bacteria getting trapped in a pore, we should prevent unnecessary bacteria from making its way onto our chin by avoiding resting our heads on our hands or mindlessly picking at our skin while deep in thought.

Also important? Dont pick your face, says Ranella Hirsch, M.D., a Boston-based dermatologist. In many cases, picking is what takes a sterile wound without bacteria and introduces a portal for bacteria to enter, she explains. This is often the infection we see after picking so please dont.

My Own Experience With Hormonal Acne

How to get rid of #Acne? Hormonal, Cystic whatever type of Acne, # ...

Now, when I had acne I tried everything my doctor would give me. I was desperate to improve the way my skin looked, and the way I felt about myself. I imagine youve also gone through a list of potions and pills, hoping each would work for you. I personally tried a long course of antibiotics to stop the acne, which permanently stained my teeth slightly yellow and destroyed my gut microbiome so badly that I spent my entire freshman year of college with viruses, yeast infections and flu-like symptoms. I tried Retinol-A cream and Salicylic Acid and Benzoyl Peroxide thinking I could heal my skin from the outside and just fix the surface of the issue. Needless to say, they didnt work.

The problem with all of the treatments for acne that youve probably been offered, or tried already, is that they dont solve the most common cause of an adult womans acne issues her hormones. In fact, antibiotics and the birth control pill only worsen the hormonal imbalance that is triggering the hormonal acne. A combination of two health problems underpins the development of hormonal acne a damaged and depleted gut microbiome and a deficiency in key miconutrients for skin health. These lead to hormonal imbalance and the development of acne as a result. Once I figured out how to eat and live to support my hormones with the Flo Living protocol my skin cleared up, and its been beautifully clear ever since.

What Is The Best Hormonal Acne Treatment

Now that you understand all the ins and outs of hormonal acne, you can choose the best treatment to conquer it once and for all.

Drink Hot Lemon Water First Thing In The Morning

As soon as you wake up in the morning , Rouleau says youll want to head to the kitchen and whip up some hot lemon water, her personal skin secret. Why? It could help flush out and purify the body internally, potentially reducing toxins and bacteria in the small intestine where the cycle of acne may begin for some people.

Squeeze fresh lemon into a mug full of hot water and drink it when you wake up. If you dont have a fresh lemon handy, you can pour in lemon juice. Use enough so that the water tastes very lemon-y.

Keep It Clean + Simple

Best Remedy for Hormonal Cystic Acne Dr.Berg

Switching over to clean skincare has been a game changer for my skin. While the hormonal acne has been wreaking havoc on the lower portion of my face and neck, I can truly say the rest of my skin has never been clearer. My melasma has faded on my forehead and my cheeks glow, which I contribute to our Aloe + Willow Bark Vitamin C Serum. Even though it is great to use with normal breakouts I have not been using this on the inflamed / cystic areas right now , but I couldnt imagine depriving the rest of my face of it!

For the acne, I use our Aloe + Lime Purifying Facial Toner every day, multiple times a day. The alcohol-free witch hazel blend is gentle and hydrating but cleans out my pores and preps my skin for treatment. In the morning I apply a very light layer of my Hormonal Acne Custom Oil Blend. At night, I remove makeup with a custom mixture of Grapeseed + Sunflower Oil. I follow that with a simple gel cleanser + exfoliation with MMHs Masa + Honey Facial Polish. Im really careful, if any of the acne is inflamed I will avoid or go over *very lightly.* Exfoliation is important but aggravating the area, especially if cystic, can make it worse in the long run. After cleansing, I follow with the toner, treatments, and seal it all in with our Awakening Under Eye Oil and custom facial blend.

Traditional Treatments For Hormonal Acne

Unless your hormonal acne is mild, over-the-counter products usually arent successful.

This is because hormonal acne typically takes the form of cystic bumps. These bumps form deep under the skin, out of reach of most topical medications.

Oral medications can work from the inside out to balance your hormones and clear up the skin. Common options include oral contraceptives and anti-androgen drugs.

How To Know If Your Acne Is Hormonal

In general, acne is considered to be hormone-related if it :

  • Occurs on the lower part of the face, such as the chin and jawline.
  • Flares up before your period, during menopause, during pregnancy or other phases of life when theres a significant shift in hormones.
  • Becomes worse as you go on or off hormone therapies .

In addition to the above, hormone-related conditions like PCOS can also cause acne to worsen.

This is mainly due to the fact that high androgens and insulin resistance are quite common in PCOS patients. And as weve seen, imbalances in both of those hormones contribute significantly to inflammation and hormonal acne.

NOTE: the tips in this section are general guidelines. The only way to know for sure if your acne is hormone-related to get your hormones tested by a doctor.

What Is The Prognosis Of Cystic Acne

Immediate resolution of the acne, even with the best and most effective treatments, is unlikely. The skin cells have a six-week life cycle, and it usually takes a number of weeks before optimal results may be reached. The prognosis for eventual control is good, although there will always be some remaining scarring long after the condition has been treated or gone into remission.

Can Ice Provide Relief For Cystic Acne

If you have a more painful area of the skin, icing is never a bad idea. I encourage patients to ice their skin for a variety of reasons from itch to pain, to even a painful lesion of acne. Should you decide to ice your skin, dont put ice directly on it because you can end up burning the skin. Wrap your ice pack in a washcloth or even a thicker paper towel first. Gentle icing for 10 minutes or so isnt a bad idea. If its causing more pain or the area is starting to go numb, stop immediately.
