How To Get Rid Of Chest Acne

Whatever You Do Dont Try To Pop It

We know youve heard it before, but well say it again: As satisfying as you think it might feel, do not try to pop your pimplesespecially if they are cystic. The hardest thing for me to communicate with my patients is that often, around age 20, women experience a major change in their acne, New York City board-certified dermatologist Scott Dunbar has told Allure. No longer are the zits the juicy whiteheads that explode with a satisfying pop. By the mid-20s and 30s, acne is made of deep pockets of white blood cells, and these cant be popped.

Maryland-based board-certified dermatologist Ife Rodney says they not only cant be popped, but that an attempt to can cause damage. Unlike pustules little pus-filled pimples and blackheads, under-the-skin pimples usually do not contain a core of dead skin or pus, she tells Allure. When you try to squeeze a cystic pimple, the result is trauma and more inflammation, leading to scarring and skin discoloration.

How To Avoid Irritation Caused By Shaving

Its obvious that shaving can irritate the skinafter all, we shave by pulling a razor blade across our skin. Thats why many people use shaving cream, but that may not be enough to prevent acne. If you shave your chest, your shaving habits could be contributing to your chest acne.

Although shaving cream is meant to reduce irritation, for some people, it may actually make irritation worse. Shaving cream contains chemicals that make the cream foam up into a nice lather, and those chemicals can cause irritation. Not all chemicals are badif you break it down, everything is made of chemicals. But the chemicals that make shaving cream foamy are too harsh for some peoples skin.

To prevent this irritation, we recommend switching to a fragrance-free shaving gel. Shaving gels dont contain the foaming chemicals that make shaving creams too harsh for some people, and a fragrance-free gel avoids the same irritating fragrance chemicals found in some laundry detergents.

Shaving Your Chest Can Also Lead To Chest Acne

If you shave your chest, similar advice applies: avoid extra chemicals in shaving cream, or use shaving gel, and shave in the shower and be sure to rinse thoroughly. Another important way you can prevent acne is always using a sharp razor. More serious chest acne can develop if you use a dull razor; rather than cleanly cutting the hair, a dull razor will often push the hair back into the hair follicle so it grows inward, and the skin will grow over it and form red bumps. These red bumps make up what is typically called razor burn and is not a type of acne, but it can lead to a very serious form of acne, acne keloidalis nuchae .

AKN, which is common among Hispanic, black, or African American men, is a chronic inflammatory condition where the immune system attacks the hair follicle, resulting in raised, keloid-like acne. If your razor burn looks more like large bumps or raised scars, you should see a dermatologist. They can provide antibiotics, prescription acne medication, or even surgical removal of the keloids.

Do Not Pop Your Pimples

I know its super tempting, but whatever you do, dont pop! As dermatologists we never recommend popping any pimples because that can lead to scars, more inflammation, and hyper-pigmentation, says Dr. Vega Gonzalez. A mix of the treatments above should be enough to stop your chest breakouts, so do yourself a favor and just leave that whitehead alone. Youre welcome!

This method may sound intense, but Goldenberg recommends it as an at-home remedy. “Fill a bathtub with water and pour a cap of Clorox bleach,” she instructs. “Sit in the water for about 20 minutes two times a week.” This soak “will help kill off bacteria that may be contributing to the development of chest acne.” Keep your soak from five to 10 minutes to avoid over-drying your skin, and follow with a light moisturizer to replenish hydration. Always check with your dermatologist before attempting this on your own.

What Is Chest Acne

Essentially, chest acne is the term used to describe widespread or long-lasting breakouts on the chest area, and it works just like any other types of acne. Acne is a disorder of the pilosebaceous unit of the skin, says Dr Mahto. This consists of a hair follicle and its associated sebaceous or oil gland. Blockage or inflammation of the pilosebaceous units will result in acne. Oil glands are found in highest density on the face, back and chest so these are the commonest sites of acne development, she adds.

What Causes Back Chest & Shoulder Acne

Eminence OrganicsLead Skin Care Trainer Natalie Pergar tells us that the primary causes of body and facial acne are alike: Body acne is caused by the same factors as facial acne – bacteria, overactive oil glands and excess dead skin cells. As with facial acne, oil and dead skin cells block a pore, mix with acne-causing bacteria and trigger an immune response that presents as one of the five types of acne. There are a few additional factors that contribute to breakouts on your back, chest and shoulders. These include:

When To See A Doctor

It is recommended to consult your doctor in the following cases:

  • If the acne doesnât clear in 6 weeks
  • If you develop acne scars
  • If the over-the-counter treatments do not improve the acne
  • What treatments do you suggest for my chest acne?
  • Can the chest acne cause any complications or cause scars?

How Do You Treat Back And Chest Acne

If youre experiencing severe body acne with deep, painful cysts, its best to partner with a dermatologist so you can develop a unique plan for ongoing care. That being said, for mild to moderate body acne, some of the basic treatments used to treat acne on the face can be used for the back and chest. Heres how to get rid of body acne for good:

1. Use an acne cleanser

While any gentle soap or body wash can help remove dirt and oils, there are specific products geared toward fighting body acne breakouts. Dr. Thompson suggests starting with products that include benzoyl peroxide.

Normally, I favor milder benzoyl peroxide washes as stronger washes can cause more dryness and skin irritation for the face. Fortunately, the trunk tends to be less sensitive with treatment, Dr. Thompson said.

2. Try a topical retinoid

Whether a prescription agent or over-the-count adapalene gel, this is another great option for treating body acne. Products like Differin gel and Retin-A play a crucial role in the treatment of acne by regulating skin cell turnover and reducing inflammation deep in the skin to not only clear but prevent future pimples.

3. Remember sun protection
4. Develop good workout habits

Its great to put in the time for workouts, but dont hang out too long in your sweaty clothes. Make sure you shower and change clothes right after working outor doing anything that gets you sweaty.

5. Resist the urge to pop, pick or scrub acne
6. Modify your diet

Consider A Chest Facial

Celebrity esthetician and skincare expert Renee Rouleau says that sometimes its necessary to have a professional perform extractions if theres an abundance of non-infected clogged pores or bumps on your chest. Keeping the pores cleared out by removing debris stops new breakouts from forming, she explains. Extraction is usually partnered with a chemical peel that exfoliates the skin and loosens clogged pores so that blemishes are easily removed by the esthetician. That being said, if you can’t make an appointment with a pro, skip the extractions altogether and opt for a just chemical peel. I love to use a 20 percent salicylic acid peel on my clients that can help lift away discoloration from old acne scarring while helping to keep pores clear, Rouleau says. There are plenty of at-home peel options in the form of resurfacing pads and dropper solutions, just don’t go overboard and use them more than once a week.

Book Yourself In For A Professional Extraction

How to treat body acne

Extractions are a common treatment for stubborn pimples on the face, and they work just as well on the chest too. They involve your dermatologist using special tools to pull any blockages and unwanted substances out of your pores, which helps to prevent new spots from developing.

While you may see a few at-home extraction tools available, this is a procedure thats always best carried out by a professional. Performing an extraction incorrectly can result in inflammation being pushed deeper into the skin, which would then make those pimples even worse. Plus, extractions arent suitable for everyone it all depends on the type of acne you have, which is why professional guidance in this area is crucial.

How Do Doctors Diagnose Chest Acne

A dermatologist can typically diagnose chest acne by looking at it. There is no specific test. A dermatologist has the expertise to rule out other skin conditions that can look like acne, such as rosacea or acne inversa.

Your doctor may ask you several questions related to your chest acne breakouts including:

  • When did your chest acne breakouts start?
  • What other areas get acne breakouts?
  • Are you experiencing any other symptoms, such as itching or visible blood vessels?
  • What, if anything, seems to trigger breakouts or make them worse?
  • Have your breakouts left dark spots or scars?
  • What treatments have you tried?

How To Use Aloe Vera Gel For Acne

  • Scrape the gel out of the aloe leaves with a spoon.
  • Apply the gel to your skin when you apply other acne treatments. You may want to try mixing it with your other treatment, and then apply this to your skin. Or, you can apply the other acne treatment first, adding the aloe gel over it.
  • Repeat 12 times per day, or as desired.
  • You can also purchase bottled aloe vera gel online, but make sure its pure aloe and does not contain added ingredients.

Applying aloe to the skin can help treat burns, heal wounds, and fight inflammation. It has been shown to increase the anti-acne effects of other treatments, but more research is needed on its effects when used on its own.

    Chest Acne Vs Facial Acne

In general, acne is the same no matter where it is found. Its caused by inflammation, bacteria, and oil production, and combatting those causes is the best way to get clear, healthy skin, whether that skin is on the chest or on the face. Although acne is the same everywhere, skin is not.

The skin on the chest is typically much thicker than the skin on the face, and its pores also tend to be larger. This affects the type of acne that typically occurs on the chest, and how difficult it is to treat. Unlike facial acne, which can be any mix of blackheads, whiteheads, and pimples, chest acne is much more likely to be primarily made up of pimples. This is because of the size of the pores. It takes a lot more oil to clog the large pores on the chest and create a blackhead or whitehead, but the small pores on the face can easily be clogged by a slight excess of oil. Instead of being clogged by excess oil, these large open pores are more susceptible to bacteria.

Dermatologist’s Additional Tips To Control Chest And Back Acne:

People Of African Or Asian Descent Could Be More Affected By Chest Acne

Although they arent sure why, some studies show that people with an African or Asian heritage are more likely to seek solutions on how to get rid of chest acne. These skin types appear to be more prone to a condition known as dermatitis, which is typically caused by friction and causes the skin to become irritated and inflamed. This can then cause the skin to produce more sebum which can clog pores and produce acne.

One potential explanation for this increased sensitivity might be the clothes youre wearing. If you previously lived in Japan and only started developing chest acne after moving to the US, you could be allergic to formaldehyde. This isnt a problem in Japan because the standard amount of formaldehyde allowed in clothing is very low there. However, this amount is much higher in the US. You may have always had this allergy, but were never exposed to enough formaldehyde to be made aware of it until you moved to the US. If you think that the increased skin sensitivity is because of what you are wearing, you can find a variety of formaldehyde-free clothing online.

What Should I Do About Chest Acne Cysts

Acne cysts are deep enlarged sebaceous glands. They are usually painful and inflamed and are very hard to eliminate with topical treatment alone. People with many acne cysts on their chest would need to refer to their local dermatologist and consider adding oral antibiotics or Accutane to their topical treatment routine. In addition, acne supplements rich in pantothenic acid *vitamin B5 and vitamin A can be a good addition to topical treatment for people with acne cysts on the chest and back.

Look Out For A More Severe Version Of Chest Acne: Acne Conglobata

Acne conglobata is a relatively rare, extreme form of acne that can cause significant scarring. Acne in general is caused primarily by bacteria, causing minor infections that result in blackheads, whiteheads, and pimples. With acne conglobata, this infection becomes much more severe. The infection burrows deeper into the skin, creating cystic acne, keloid-like scars, and pimples that fill with pus even after draining.

Steroids, oral antibiotics, and retinoids like isotretinoin have all been shown as possible treatments for acne conglobata. These treatment regimens often last 20 weeks or longer, and once the acne has subsided, surgical improvement of scarring is available. Seeking treatment early can prevent some of the more severe scarring.
