Everyday Health

Pimples on your buttocks are unsightly, annoying … and, believe it or not, typically are not considered acne. True acne on the buttock is rare, says Joshua Zeichner, MD, a board-certified dermatologist and the director of cosmetic and clinical research in the department of dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City.

Another board-certified dermatologist, Jamie MacKelfresh, MD, an associate professor of dermatology at the Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, concurs. Acne on the buttocks is not like the true acne you get on your face, chest, or back, Dr. MacKelfresh says.

In general, acne is defined as plugged pores, pimples, and cysts that occur on the face, neck, shoulders, upper arms, and upper back or chest. Acne is caused by a buildup of oil trapped within the follicles, leading to overgrowth of acne-causing bacteria and subsequent inflammation, says Dr. Zeichner. There are high levels of oil glands on the chest, back, and upper arms, and that explains why acne may develop there, he adds.

Butt acne is similar to the acne that occurs on the body like on our back as it is caused by inflammation around hair follicles and by bacteria penetrating the skin in these areas, says Dr. Green. In general, acne on the buttocks is caused by trapped hair follicles which get infected, leading to folliculitis, which is generally caused by bacteria, predominantly Staphylococcus aureus, or staph bacteria.

When there is a break in the skin, staph can cause an infection, in the form of acne papules, acne pustules , cysts or painful boils, explains Dr. Green.

Don’t Use Physical Exfoliants

Exfoliating is helpful for clearing butt breakouts, but you’ll want to stick to chemical players. A light massage with a washcloth here and there is likely fine, but perhaps steer clear of any scrubs or tools that can irritate the area. “Stay away from rough granular exfoliating products,” Shamban says. “No brushes, mitts, or other types, which can exacerbate the area with inflammation and additional discomfort.”

Using The Right Moisturizer

It is essential to keep the skin moist, but some moisturizers may do more harm than good by clogging the follicles and making pimples worse.

Non-greasy moisturizers that contain compounds, such as lactic acid, may prevent folliculitis in some people.

Lactic acid is a similar compound to salicylic acid, which is present in some acne treatments. It may help keep the skin moist while loosening and getting rid of dead skin cells.

Coconut oil may also make a good natural moisturizer to help soothe irritated skin.

So, yeah, that’s gonna be a no for me, dog, and it should be a no for you, too.

1. Its caused by tight clothing: Buttne is not caused by a hereditary skin condition, its actually a result of wearing tight clothing, and unbreathable fabrics, like spandex or gym clothes.

2. There are two types of acne: The most common buttne is not really acne, its a condition called folliculitis. It occurs when a hair follicle becomes inflamed, infected or blocked, resulting in a buildup of dead skin cells. The friction from the tight clothing, mixed with sweat creates an irritant reaction that causes bumps and redness it kinda looks like a rash. The other form of buttne is carbuncles, these are the more painful ones that look a bit like cystic acne, and it occurs when the folliculitis is so severe, the infection goes deeper into the skin, and a boil or cyst forms.

3. Touching it will only make it worse: Literally, the worst thing you can do to your buttne is scratch or pop it, as this will exacerbate the issue, as the bacteria will spread and so will the infection. It may also cause the buttne to scar, leaving small red marks on your booty. Instead, treat it with products that will kill off the acne bacteria, exfoliate, and cleanse the skin.

Folliculitis and acne are easily confused, because they really do look similar to the untrained eye , but there are a few key differences a dermatologist can easily spot:

That said, there are instances where patients do get real zits on their butts, which is why both Dr. Idriss and Dr. Rabach agree that you should see a derm to find out exactly whats really going on and treat it the right way.
