How To Get Rid Of Baby Acne

The Dos And Don’ts Of Treating Baby Acne

How to Get Rid of Baby Acne Fast

If your baby does develop acne, you can follow these suggestions to help manage it:

  • If your baby first develops acne after they are six weeks old, be sure to schedule a check-up with your pediatrician to rule out any other skin condition.
  • Only use warm water and mild soap for cleaning.
  • Don’t scrub or pick at the acne, because that can cause a skin infection.
  • Do not use any oils on your baby’s face.
  • Don’t use any over-the-counter medications without asking the pediatrician, as some of the products may do more harm than good to the baby’s skin.

In most cases, baby acne will clear up on its own. And even if your baby does require medical treatment, Gagin says that infantile acne should disappear by the age of two.

Newborn Acne Occurs Before Six Weeks Of Age

As its name implies, neonatal acne usually develops in the neonate period, which is the first four weeks of a baby’s life. It typically pops up around two weeks of age, but can occur anytime before six weeks.

It looks like small superficial pustules, which usually appear on a baby’s cheeks, chin, and forehead, and more rarely on the neck and upper body. You can identify neonatal acne because it’s usually very mild and doesn’t have any whiteheads or blackheads.

“It gets better on its own within a few weeks or months, usually no treatment is necessary,” Gagin says. And according to the American Academy of Dermatology, it won’t usually leave any lasting scars.

About 20%, or one in five, healthy newborns will develop neonatal acne.

Be Overly Gentle On Their Face

Another factor that comes into play when caring for the skin of infants is sensitivity. Because they are babies, their skin is a lot more sensitive in general to products and virtually anything.

This means that you have to take extra care so that you are extremely gentle on their face. This is applied to not only products but general touch as well.

Parents should make sure to use gentle motions when cleaning their babies face, and not press down hard with a rag or washcloth, so the skin doesnt become irritated.

But additionally, using products specifically made for babies skin is important to ensure not to strip the skin of necessary oils.

Normal skin products and soaps will be too harsh. Specific products made for baby skin are the best and safest option.

Breast Milk And Baby Acne

A great, natural remedy for treating the appearance of baby acne is breast milk.

Breast milk contains anti-infective and anti-inflammatory properties that are beneficial to your babys skin cells.

To treat baby acne, simply dab some expressed milk on the affected area a few times a day and allow it to air dry.

This can help to reduce the amount and severity of acne.

The True Cause Of Baby Acne

How to get rid of baby acne in 2021

Babies get acne due to the maternal hormone that passes from placenta to child during pregnancy. This maternal hormone remains with the baby for the first six months of life. As the hormone targets and stimulates the oil glands, this may lead to breakouts on the babys skinincluding the scalp, which is known as cradle cap. Even after the hormone is metabolized, some babies oil glands may stay enlarged, allowing oil to clog pores, known as infantile acne, Dr. Joyce Teng, Everedens Chief Scientific Officer, and Director of Pediatric Dermatology at Stanford Medical School, adds. Infantile acne can last longer than baby acneuntil two years of age, and the more serious instances can lead to scarring.

How To Differentiate Baby Acne From Eczema

Infantile acne is different from eczema, which is why it’s important to take your baby to a doctor if they develop redness after 6 weeks of age. That way a pediatrician can rule out any other skin or medical conditions.

One key difference between eczema and infantile acne is that eczema will not have any pustules. Instead, eczema will look like rough areas of dry, scaly, or inflamed patches of skin.

If your baby does have eczema, the treatment will be different, so it is important to determine the cause of your baby’s acne before getting treatment. “Eczema treatment requires thorough daily moisturizing and sometimes medicated creams which are different from topical medications used for acne,” Gagin says.

Baby Acne Remedy : Use An Adult Soap With Certain Restrictions

As we mentioned earlier, a babys skin is very delicate. Using an abrasive substance on their skin can cause irritation, redness, or even a rash. There are plenty of products out there which can help ease your babys acne without causing any of these extra uncomfortable, and sometimes even painful, side effects. Theres no excuse to use an adult soap on your baby that is too abrasive and will cause them unnecessary discomfort. Worse case scenario, you can use the first remedy we talked about in this article which is to do nothing.

That being said, there are some adult products which may be mild enough for your baby.

As far as adult products go, using a mild moisturizing adult face wash is often safe enough for your babys sensitive skin.

What Causes Newborn Baby Acne

Doctors dont know for sure why newborn baby acne develops but one of the most popular theories for the cause of newborn acne is that hormones passed from mother to baby through the placenta and also breastmilk are to blame.

These hormones aggravate the sebaceous glands causing pimples to break out on the newborns face, usually on the cheeks, nose and forehead, but sometimes on babys neck, back and chest too.

What Is Baby Acne

As noted above, baby acne is a harmless and very common condition among infants that closely resembles acne in teenagers or adults.

The American Academy of Dermatology divides acne into two categories:

  • Newborn acne . This affects 20 percent of newborns and typically develops between the ages of two and six weeks. In some cases, a baby may be born with acne.
  • Infantile acne. This condition typically arises between the ages of three and six months. This type of acne may be slightly more complicated than newborn acne. In some cases, parents may mistake another condition for baby acne. For these reasons, its a good idea to consult your pediatrician or a pediatric dermatologist if your child develops acne after the age of three months.

Just like in older populations, newborn acne manifests as breakouts on a babys skin. Most commonly, these breakouts will show up on a newborns cheeks, nose, and/or forehead. They tend to look like small red or white bumps, and the skin around these bumps may appear reddish. The acne may become more inflamed when your baby is fussing or crying. In some cases, baby acne may appear on the back, scalp, chest, or other parts of the body.

While it can be a little alarming to see breakouts on your infants face or body, its helpful to remember that newborn acne is generally a harmless and temporary condition. The acne will typically clear up on its own within a few weeks or months, and it rarely causes scarring.

How Can Breast Milk Help

Using breast milk to treat baby acne might seem a little far-fetched, but some people swear by this remedy.

To be clear, theres no science or research to support this claim. However, breast milk does have antimicrobial properties. This means it may reduce or destroy some microbes, like bacteria.

So if bacteria on your babys skin triggers acne, cleansing their skin with breast milk may help kill the bacteria and other impurities that block pores. This, in turn, can also reduce skin irritation and inflammation caused by acne.

How To Distinguish Baby Acne From Other Skin Conditions

Sometimes baby acne can be difficult to identify.

Here are some general guidelines for distinguishing baby acne from other skin conditions that can often look very similar:

Allergic reaction

These rashes usually appear quickly, sometimes in as little as 10 minutes. The main difference between acne and allergic rashes is localization. With acne, the rash is usually on the face. With allergies, the rash can be located all over the body. Often, allergic reactions manifest as hives, while in acne, the rash will include pustules .

If youve recently started using a new skincare product for your child or introduced new foods to your childs diet, and now a rash is starting to appear, an allergic reaction is likely to blame.

Heat rash

Heat rash, as the name suggests, usually occurs when its hot outside. It also forms in the hottest areas on the babys body, such as the armpits, feet, wrists, and neck. At the same time, acne is characterized by pimples on the face.

Eczema is a condition that causes dry, flaky skin. Although redness is associated with both eczema and baby acne, eczema usually doesnt cause pimples. Acne results in oily skin, in contrast to the dry, flaky skin that babies with eczema typically experience.
