How Does Hyperpigmentation Develop

Hyperpigmentation and dark spots are the result of a local overproduction of melanin. Melanin is a dark brown to black pigment that is responsible for our skin color and also for giving us a summer tan. When exposed to UV light, the skin increases production of melanin in the melanocytes to protect itself from sun damage. Melanocytes are highly specialized melanin-producing cells located in the bottom layer of the epidermis.

Vitamin C

When it comes to brightening dark hyperpigmentation, vitamin C should be a key weapon in your skincare arsenal. “I absolutely love it for many reasons. Its benefits are endless, including revitalising and brightening the skin while stimulating your bodys natural production of collagen,” says Dr Gross. “Not only does it help to lighten and break up pigmentation you might already have, but it also prevents dark spots from forming in the future.

Light as water, this potent vitamin C serum is ideal for layering.

When To See A Doctor

If you find that youre developing dark spots frequently, or if the appearance of these dark spots is affecting your day-to-day life, its time to speak to your healthcare provider.

If youre concerned about your dark spots and dont already have a dermatologist, you can view doctors in your area through the Healthline FindCare tool.

Creating a treatment plan with your dermatologist can give you a realistic perspective of dark spots caused by pimples. Having a plan and a professional to call on can make all the difference.

Acne Scars Or Hyperpigmentation

Acne scarring and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation can both occur after a breakout, but the two are actually very different and thus a different approach is required when it comes to fading them.

“Acne scars occur when too much collagen forms in a particular spot while a wound is healing,” explains dermatologist Dr Dennis Gross. “The scar often develops within the dermis, where the original acne-induced inflammation formed.”

When someone has cystic acne, there’s a higher probability of having rolling or boxcar scarring especially if they are picked at before they are ready, or too aggressively,” says Marshall. Aesthetic practitioner and ambassador for Filorga, Dr Philippe Hamida-Pisal agrees. “Acne scarring is due to touching and squeezing spots. This damages small veins, glands and tissues surrounding the spots which creates scarring,” he says.

Unlike acne scarring, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is simply a form of skin pigmentation , which occurs as a result of trauma to the skin. As it doesn’t damage the follicle, it isn’t considered a true form of scarring.

According to Ayodele, certain skin types and tones are more likely to experience this post-acne redness. “Darker skin tones are more prone to hyperpigmentation because of the higher levels on melanin in the skin. This means that whenever there is any trauma, the melanin cells quickly leap into action to produce more melanin to defend and protect against that trauma,” she says.

Stop Picking Your Pimples

HOW TO GET RID OF ACNE SCARS

I know its really tempting sometimes, but it never does any good to your skin. Popping or picking pimples is relatively the biggest culprit behind post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation . And it often doesnt just stop there. Picking pimples is also an excellent way to invite acne scars to ruin your face.

But if youre dying to pop a pimple, however, theres a way you can avoid or at least minimize this damage. The video below shows how to do that:

What You Can Do

Acne-related hyperpigmentation occurs when dark patches develop after a blemish has healed. Although hyperpigmentation is harmless, it can be frustrating to deal with.

If youre experiencing acne-related hyperpigmentation, you arent alone. Talk to your dermatologist about your options for over-the-counter and professional treatment.

The exact treatment you choose will depend on the severity of your condition, as well as your skin type and tone. Your dermatologist can help you find the best option for your skin.

Vitamin C: Helps To Fade Hyperpigmentation

While most people are familiar with the various health benefits of incorporating vitamin C into your daily diet, not many people understand how this powerful antioxidant can help the appearance of your skin. A topical vitamin C serum works to brighten the overall skin tone, shield the skin from environmental impurities, and reduce the look of fine lines and wrinkles. Most skincare products use vitamin C in the form of ascorbic acid. Because vitamin C is unstable, most products that use this wonder ingredient begin to break down when exposed to too much light and air.

Acne Scar Treatment No: Dermal Fillers

Not just here to make you look like a contestant on Love Island, fillers can be used to help an array of skin problems, one of them being acne scars. A tiny amount can temporarily plump and smooth over any skin craters left behind from acne.

‘Dermal fillers are very good for indented scars’, says Dr. Anjali Mahto, Consultant Dermatologist and British Skin Foundation Spokesperson. ‘However, depending on the type of filler used, the treatment will need to be repeated at regular intervals – most probably every six months – to maintain the results.’

Your skin’s initial reaction may be to bruise, swell up and go red but be patient and wait for the magic to happen. As acne scarring treatments go, this one isnt the priciest and is relatively non invasive and pain free. Hooray!

What Can Cause Hyperpigmentation

How To Get Rid Of Pigmentation, Sun Tan, Dark Spots & Acne Scars | Treatments & Expert Advice

The list of factors that can lead to hyperpigmentation is endless because any irritation can cause it. Acne, cuts, scrapes, waxing, and rashes are just a few. Dr. Battle says the main culprit of hyperpigmentation is sun exposure, because it can cause irritation to the skin or darken an already present mark. This is why SPF is so important, but well get into that later.

According to Dr. Battle, an acne lesion is slightly swollen because it is inflamed and infected, leading to a series of events that lead to hyperpigmentation.

Any squeezing or picking of acne can cause further trauma to the skin, and therefore, dark spots, which is why we need to learn to keep our hands off our faces.

If topical solutions aren’t fixing the problem, you may want to talk to your dermatologist about more aggressive ways to banish discoloration, such as chemical peels, microdermabrasion, or dermabrasion, or, according to the International Association for Physicians in Aesthetic Medicine, a laser or a light-based procedure.

How Can I Reduce Or Remove Pimple Marks

Thankfully there is a range of treatment options available that can help fade or reduce pigment marks and, in some cases, remove them completely. These include brightening or exfoliating creams that can be bought over the counter at a pharmacy. More intense treatments such as chemical peels and laser therapy need to be carried out by a dermatologist or a beautician who specializes in this area.

If your acne marks are bothering you, consult your doctor who will be able to give advice on the best treatment options for your skin. Here are those most commonly used:

How To Treat Acne Hyperpigmentation

If you want to get rid of your hyperpigmentation from acne, treating it as soon as it onsets can accelerate the natural fading process. Without treatment, some hyperpigmented areas may heal on their own, but it could take up to 6 to 12 months.

Keep in mind that if your spots are blue or purple, theyre likely deeper in the skin and will be more difficult to treat. Because of the nature of pigment, treatments typically involve lightening the skin.

Word of warning: Always do a patch test on your wrist to see how your skin reacts, before putting anything on your face! And, consider chatting with your dermatologist about whats right for your skin type, some options will require a derm anyways.

The spots that linger after a pimple has healed are caused by inflammation that has disrupted the skin’s natural healing process. “When your skin is opened up and then closes back together, you can get abnormal pigmentation, texture, and tone that looks different from the rest of your skin. Sometimes the broken blood vessels that remain after an acne lesion fades can result in a mark,” says Dr. Bowe. For a number of people who are able to refrain from picking, inflamed pimples or blemishes can still leave a dark brown or red mark but these naturally fade over the course of a few months, notes dermatologist Heather C. Woolery-Lloyd, MD.

Since it’s pretty difficult to determine what causes one person to scar more than another, the best way to avoid scarring is to treat acne with a great skin care routine and that means you need to resist picking, poking, or touching a pimple.

Some acne marks and scars are completely within your control while others are pre-determined. Aside from genetics, there are several lifestyle habits that can make dark marks and scars worse. Spending time in the sun is a big one, and, to reiterate one last time, every dermatologist agrees that picking or squeezing pimples creates further inflammation and can ultimately lead to more damage.

Now that we know where acne scars and dark spots come from, let’s dive into how to treat themstarting with acne scars.

How Long Does It Take For Acne Hyperpigmentation To Fade

The good news is that pigmentation will eventually fade. The time it takes to fade depends on the intensity and depth of trauma. Some spots may disappear within a month, while others take up to a year.

To get a feel of recovery time, think of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation caused by acne as a wound that scars over time.

Your skin changes every day. Every day you grow new skin cells that push the old ones out. The average cycle of this process is 30 days, and hence, depending on severity, acne-induced hyperpigmentation has the potential to fade in just a month.

Remember, even if skin renews itself in 30 days, it retains around 20% of its old character. With 20% of your pigmented cells remaining, it takes longer to correct the pigmentation.

  • Dermatologists recommend avoiding prolonged sun exposure or tanning beds. These are among the most common causes of dark spots on the skin.
  • Wear a hat or other clothing to provide additional sun protection for your face and neck.
  • Support your skin with high-quality dark spot corrector products to get rid of dark spots and get hyperpigmentation under control.
  • Genetics are a major factor. Have you noticed that hyperpigmentation runs in your family? If that is the case, you should take special care of your skin and use suitable skincare products to prevent skin pigmentation from becoming worse.

What Is Hyperpigmentation Exactly

How To Get Rid of Acne Scars Hyperpigmentation In 1 Month

Hyperpigmentation is a common condition where dark spots form on your skin. The darkened spots can be the result of the overproduction of melanin, the brown pigment responsible for our normal skin color. Although we all have different levels of melanin in our skin, the process that creates melanin is melanogenesis, and it happens to all of us. Melanin gives hair and eyes their color as well.

The time it takes to get rid of these dark spots varies from person to person. It typically takes months to see results, Dr. Battle says. Youll also need to keep up with regular treatments or hyperpigmentation may return.

How you should go about treating a dark spot can depend on the kind of mark left from scarring, superficial or deep. A dark spot is superficial if its less than three to four months old, and deep if older than that, existing on the second layer of the skin . For deeper, older marks, prescription creams or clinical treatments may be a better choice, says Dr. Battle.

One misconception about hyperpigmentation is that the harder you scrub, or more potent the product, the quicker it will fade. But the opposite can be true. The fact is, being too aggressive will just further irritate the spot, says Dr. Battle, leading to it getting even darker and taking longer to go away..

As you get older, hyperpigmentation becomes harder to treat because natural exfoliation is slowing down.

Acne Scars Vs Hyperpigmentation

Often, people confuse the term post-acne hyperpigmentation and acne scarring. Acne scarring is used to describe any disturbance to the skin post-spot.

While it’s true that both post-acne hyperpigmentation and acne scarring can occur after a breakout, the two are very different.

An acne scar occurs when there’s a physical alteration in the texture of the skin. Unlike acne scarring, post-acne hyperpigmentation is simply a form of skin pigmentation, and it doesn’t disrupt the skin’s texture.

What Is Hyperpigmentation And How Do You Get Rid Of Dark Spots An Explainer

“Teen Vogue” is celebrating its annual Acne Awards this week with a series of stories on all things acne. From knowing when to pop a pimple to understanding why some people get breakouts and others dont, weve got you covered. Read all of the stories here.

Having hyperpigmentation means constantly trying not to touch the acne, cuts, or pimples on your face and hoping they dont leave dark marks.

I was reminded of this during my most recent attempt to wax my lip.

One night, out of a pang of anxiety, I decided it would be a good idea. I hadnt gotten by eyebrows threaded in over a month because I liked the way they were naturally growing out. But this also meant I wasnt getting my normal, painful lip threading. I relived moments Id spent in the chair, my head back, tears rolling as I felt the pain of the thread run across my lip. I did not miss it, but something needed to be done. So I drove around the corner to CVS, picked up a box of small waxing strips, and planned to do it myself.

This left me with two small scratches, almost twinlike, at the top of my lip. I looked at myself in my bathroom mirror and said, You knew better. I didnt pick at it, and I convinced myself they were small scratches that would go away in a few days. The scratches did disappear within four days, but they left scars I was sure would not appear since I hadnt picked. Right? Wrong.
