Increase Alkaline Foods And Decrease Acidic Foods:

In general, acne is considered to be hormone-related if it :
- Occurs on the lower part of the face, such as the chin and jawline.
- Flares up before your period, during menopause, during pregnancy or other phases of life when theres a significant shift in hormones.
- Becomes worse as you go on or off hormone therapies .
In addition to the above, hormone-related conditions like PCOS can also cause acne to worsen.
This is mainly due to the fact that high androgens and insulin resistance are quite common in PCOS patients. And as weve seen, imbalances in both of those hormones contribute significantly to inflammation and hormonal acne.
NOTE: the tips in this section are general guidelines. The only way to know for sure if your acne is hormone-related to get your hormones tested by a doctor.
The Cause Of Hormonal Acne
Changes in the body hormonal levels can cause acne which is why teenagers typically experience acne as they go through puberty.
In women, specifically, hormonal acne often occurs around the menstrual cycle. During menstruation, the hormonal levels in the body fluctuate, and due to this, the formation of acne is typical among many women.
Another cause for hormonal acne is specific issues like PCOS, menopause, and increased androgen levels. Menopause occurs most commonly when women reach the age of 45 and above. Every woman is different and some may experience it early and some much later. These hormonal changes in the body can be a contributing factor to acne.
Menopausal acne occurs because of a drop in estrogen levels and or an increase in androgen hormones like testosterone. Many women take hormone replacement therapies to help with menopausal symptoms, so they are still likely to experience hormonal acne. This is because HRTs use the hormone progestin to replace the estrogen and progesterone hormones in your body. Using this hormone may even be what causes acne in your body.
The rise or fall in hormones can cause excess sebum production that accumulates with dirt into the pores and causes acne and skin cells can also become clogged in the pores.

Is Menopausal Acne A Form Of Hormonal Acne
Many women begin to experience menopause in their 40s and 50s. This causes a natural decline in your reproductive hormones, resulting in an end to menstruation.
Some women experience acne during menopause. This is likely due to a drop in estrogen levels or an increase in androgen hormones like testosterone.
You may still experience menopausal acne even if youre using hormone replacement therapies to ease your menopause symptoms. This is because some HRTs use an influx of the hormone progestin to replace the estrogen and progesterone your body loses. Introducing this hormone to your system can cause your skin to break out.
In most cases, prescription medication can clear up menopausal acne. Some women may find success using natural treatment methods. Talk to your doctor about which options may be right for you.
Inhibitors Of Ovarian Androgen Production
OCPs containing ethinyl estradiol combined with progestins with antiandrogenicactivity are recommended for the treatment of mild to moderate AFA. Although theevidence is limited and somewhat conflicting, combinations containingcyproterone acetate may be slightly more effective than those containing newerprogestins, such as desogestrel, gestodene, levonorgestrel, or norgestimate.Drospirenone-containing OCPs are effective in reducing inflammatory andnon-inflammatory acne lesions. Clinicians should be aware of the absolute andrelative contra-indications of OCPs prior to prescription. According to a systematic reviewin 2014, the risk of thromboembolism with OCPs is related to both estrogen andprogestin type. Thus, the higher the estrogen concentration the greater therisk, and for the progestins it was concluded that the second generation have a lower risk than those of the third and fourthgenerations.

Risks And Side Effects
While you can begin by tackling hormonal acne on your own at home, you may want to visit a dermatologist if your condition is reoccurring or worsening. Your doctor/dermatologist can help pinpoint any underlying conditions that might be contributing to our breakouts, such as PCOS, high testosterone or cortisol levels, a thyroid condition, or another hormone issue.
If the treatments above dont seem to be doing enough to reduce your breakouts, speak with your dermatologist about other options such as antiandrogen drugs, which block androgen receptors to decrease the actions and effects of testosterone, or stronger topical prescriptions to fight acne-causing bacteria.
When treating hormonal acne yourself, theres potential to experience some side effects depending on the specific products and treatments you use. Some topical products might cause dry, red, flaky, painful skin at first, so make sure to follow directions, and remember that less may be more when it comes to improving your skins appearance.
If you have sensitive skin, such as eczema, dermatitis or rosacea, some products, such as retinoids and certain cleaners, may be too harsh. Certain products are also not safe when youre pregnant, so get your doctors advice if this applies to you.
How To Prevent Hormonal Acne During Pregnancy
Though a surge in hormones during pregnancy can also lead to a “pregnancy glow,” it is also what causes acne. “It is a double-edged sword,” explains Dr. Gohara. “Some women are glowing and some women are more predisposed to acne. Some women have zero acne before and then acne during pregnancy. Some people have acne before then no acne in pregnancy.” In other words, there is no rhyme or reason for acne during pregnancy. “You can’t predict whether it is going to happen to you,” she says. Which means it can be nearly impossible to prevent.
You also can’t predict what type of acne you will have, or where it will occur. “I have seen it occur both on the chin, and everywhere, and also in different forms,” says Dr. Gohara. She has seen pregnant people experiencing everything from whiteheads and blackheads, to deep cystic acne and inflammatory acne. “It is all acne at the end of the day,” says Dr. Gohara.
The good news is that the lifestyle changes many people make naturally when they become pregnant, like eliminating alcohol and highly processed foods and drinking more water, also decrease your likelihood of acne and inflammation during pregnancy, says Dr. Gohara.
