Why You Shouldnt Try To Treat Cystic Acne On Your Own
Instead of taking the drugstore route to battle cystic acne, Dr. Braue strongly suggests starting with a dermatologist. Over-the-counter products can work when combined with a comprehensive treatment plan, but he says that a dermatologist can step in way before scarring or skin pigmentation problems set in.
If you are living with true cystic acne, get a good dermatologist and dont mess around with over-the-counter products. Now, there are certain over-the-counter solutions that I do recommend to patients in addition to their treatment plans, but the problem with messing around with cystic acne is that it can lead to scarring and dyspigmentation most of the time.
Dr. Braue adds that this is quite common with skin of color. People with more melanin in their skin tend to experience more hyperpigmentation or discoloration because of the inflammation thats associated with cystic acne.

If youve ever suffered an acne cyst, we understand your pain. Acne cysts, or cystic pimples, arent just painful and unpleasant theyre stubborn, too. Sometimes called blind pimples , they can be frustratingly difficult to get rid of. So whats the best way to deal with them? Lets find out.
Whats an acne cyst?
Acne cysts are more than your average pimple: theyre deeper, more swollen, and they hurt, too! They usually look like a raised red bump without a whitehead or pustule at the surface. Sometimes they stay under the skins surface and dont come to a head .
Why do they hurt so much?!
All that inflammation creates pressure under the skins surface and on the nerves around it, which is why touching it will cause a painful throbbing sensation.
Can I pop it?
Nope. Picking, squeezing, or popping a cystic pimple is the LAST thing you want to do! First of all, it wont workits too deep beneath the skin. Secondly, messing with it only worsens the inflammation and the pain.
When the opening of a pore gets plugged by dead skin cells, the cells start to accumulate inside the pore instead of being shed in the skins usual renewal process.
Sebum builds up inside the pores, too. Mixed with the dead skin cells, sebum turns into sludge that P. acnes bacteria likes to hang out in.
Trapped under the surface of the skin with nowhere to go, that sludge spills out into the skin tissue around the pore.

Drink Hot Lemon Water First Thing In The Morning
As soon as you wake up in the morning , Rouleau says you’ll want to head to the kitchen and whip up some hot lemon water, her personal skin secret. Why? It could help flush out and purify the body internally, potentially reducing toxins and bacteria in the small intestine where the cycle of acne may begin for some people.
Squeeze fresh lemon into a mug full of hot water and drink it when you wake up. If you dont have a fresh lemon handy, you can pour in lemon juice. Use enough so that the water tastes very lemon-y.
Heres The Deal With Cystic And Nodular Acne Treatment
If a drugstore treatment hasnt cleared up acne after two weeks, then you need to see a dermatologist for a prescription treatment, Dr. Engelman explains. And of course if you have any pimple that doesnt heal after a few weeks or months, its important to get it checked out because that could be a sign of skin cancer, Dr. Renati says.
Sadly, you are very unlikely to see improvement of nodulo-cystic acne with over-the-counter treatments. Usually topical medicines arent effective in treating these lesions because they are so deep and topical medicines cant penetrate that far, Dr. Khorasani says, noting that cystic acne treatment is typically more of a tailored, multistep approach from a derm.
While youre waiting for your dermatologist appointment, avoid the temptation to pop or pick a cyst or nodule youre probably not going to be able to actually pop something that deep, but you are likely to develop scars from these pimples. So especially with these types of pimples, resist the urge to mess with them.
Depending on your exact situation, your dermatologist might also suggest blue-light therapy, which works by killing bacteria within the pores, Dr. Engelman says. This treatment can be more effective than topical treatments, because it works to eliminate acne at the source , as opposed to treating the symptoms .

Microneedling For Cystic Acne Scarring
To complement the treatment of the early stages/causes of cystic acne, Microneedling can be used to again help reduce inflammation, severe cysts and scar tissue on the skin. Microneedling works by utilising hundreds of tiny needles that pierce the skin tissue, again inducing a skin regeneration action through collagen. In doing this, the collagen reduces swelling, evens out the skin and reduces cystic acne scarring over time.
Cystic Acne Home Remedies
You can take some steps to help prevent acne or keep it from getting worse:
- Wash your skin twice a day and after you sweat. Use your fingertips and a gentle cleanser. Rinse with lukewarm water.
- Donât scrub your skin or use irritating products like exfoliants.
- Donât touch cysts or pick at blemishes. You might push the infection deeper and make it spread. Let blemishes heal on their own, instead of popping or squeezing them, to lower your risk of scars.
- Stay out of the sun and away from tanning beds, which can damage your skin.
- Try to relax. Stress can make your body release more hormones, which can make acne worse.
- Keep a healthy lifestyle. Get plenty of sleep and exercise. Some research suggests that a low-glycemic diet, which limits sugar, can help ease symptoms.

What Products Am I Using
The first one is La Roche Posay Effaclar Duo. I found this very helpful in reducing the appearance of cystic acne. The product contains benzoyl peroxide which really great for fighting cystic acne, because benzoyl peroxide can kills the bacteria that caused the inflammation. It also contains LHA which is a very mild chemical exfoliator. Full review on this product is available in here.
The second product is chemical exfoliator. Im using AHA and BHA interchangeably. Salicylic acid is really great for treating cystic acne, salicylic acid can penetrate deep down into the pores, so it could target the dead skin cells that trapped inside the pores . Meanwhile, I use AHA to treat the PIH that the cystic acne left behind.

What Is Cystic Acne And How Is It Different From Normal Acne
Cystic acne is the most severe type of acne skin condition. It is an uncommon form of acne in comparison to standard acne, however, due to its effects, it causes both physical and emotional stress. Cystic acne develops as a cyst underneath when bacteria, oil, and dry skin cells build up within your pores.
Traditionally, this specific type of acne is more common for people with oilier skin or those with an imbalance of hormones. This can affect teenagers going through adolescence and hormonal changes, which is often why severe cases of acne are often experienced within the ages of 13-21.
What Is The Prognosis For People Who Have Cystic Acne
Most people with cystic acne can prevent severe breakouts or quickly treat acne cysts to prevent scarring. Often, but not always, cystic acne clears up or diminishes with age, as hormones settle down.
Severe or untreated cystic acne can affect how you feel about your appearance, making you anxious or depressed. If cystic acne bothers you, talk with your healthcare provider about getting help with fostering a positive self-image.

When To Seek Medical Care
A doctor should be contacted in the following situations:
- A cyst becomes painful or inflamed.
- A cyst grows or changes color.
- Removal is desired for cosmetic reasons.
Typically, removing a dermoid cyst is not an emergency procedure. If a dermoid cyst ruptures, becomes inflamed, or causes pain or fever, a person should seek immediate medical advice. Depending on the severity of pain or discomfort, a person might also consider visiting a hospitalââ¬â¢s emergency department.
Difference Between An Acne Cyst And Acne Nodule
Though both are caused due to acne deep under the skin’s surface, there is an important difference between the two.
Acne cysts, as discussed above, are soft and filled with pus.
On the other hand, acne nodules harden over time and their content remains under the skin. The latter also doesn’t have distinguishable pus-filled heads like cysts.

Our digestion can be affected by stress, which shifts our inner microbial systems, leading to inflammation, Rouleau says. This, in turn, changes the type and number of bacteria that live in the gut to unhealthy bacteria.
“Eventually the gut lining becomes leaky and toxins are released into the bloodstream causing inflammation throughout the body,” she says. ” can result in a flare-up of breakouts due to the shift in gut bacteria, and subsequent inflammation.”
How To Deal With Cystic Acne
Acne is a very common skin disorder that is usually experienced by young individuals. It is caused by bacteria that form follicles in the skin, usually on the face. Though it is not really serious, acne can cause a lot of discomfort and shame because of its unattractive appearance.
There are many kinds of acne and they range from the simple to the very severe. More commonly known as pimples or zits, acne takes shape in many forms.
The most common of course are white heads and black heads. This type of acne are very easy to treat. Usually, all you need to get rid of white heads and black heads is a good facial wash or soap.
Then there are the more sever type of acne. Cystic acne is one of them. Cystic acne is a form of acne characterized by a proliferation of cysts and nodules, hence its name. This nodules or cysts are filled with pus can become very painful aside from the fact that they can be very unsightly.
This is why individuals with cystic acne are usually under huge physical, emotional or psychological stress. The worst thing about cystic acne is that it can form scars in your face, especially if its squeezed or picked.
What are the causes of cystic acne?
Like other forms of acne, cystic acne is caused by an over production of oil glands by the skin. When the skin, particularly facial skin, produces excess oil the skin erupts. And when there are bacteria, follicles are formed in the skin resulting to acne.

When Do Most People Get Cystic Acne And How Long Does It Last
Cystic acne is strongly linked to hormones an estimated 85 percent of the time it hits around hormone-heavy puberty and tends to stick around until your 20s. But I certainly see women and men in their 40s who have cystic acne, even for the first time, Ferris says. In fact, a growing number of women in their 30s, 40s and 50s are getting acne, according to the AAD.
In women, hormonal changes that happen during pregnancy can trigger cystic acne later in life. PCOS, a hormonal imbalance where the body makes more testosterone-like hormones behind cystic acne, is another common cause. Because fat cells can convert female hormones into weak male hormones, Robinson notes, obesitywhich is also linked to PCOSups the odds of cystic acne. Even menopause rarely causes cystic acne due to hormonal fluctuations. Its a big trigger for some women. Thats usually when youll see another peak, says Robinson. Hormonal-linked acne usually appears around the jawline and the mouth, he adds.
More from Tonic:
If you get cystic acne for the first time in your 30s or 40s, your doctor will usually work with a gynecologist or endocrinologist to test for hormonal imbalances and work together to treat it. There are even more rare syndromes that can be associated with acne, so if someone suddenly got bad acne later in life we look for another underlying cause, Ferris says.
