How To Cover Up Acne Scars

Primer: Your Skins Trusty Sidekick

How To: Cover Up Acne Scars/Dark Spots

When covering acne scars, you might be tempted to head straight to foundation and concealer. But prepping your skin with a primer can improve your results.

A post shared by MAKE UP FOR EVER on Jun 18, 2020 at 8:02am PDT

After you apply your serum and moisturiser, reach for your primer. Priming products are mostly used to help makeup last longer, smooth the skin’s surface, and even out skin tone. This means the primer does some of the heavy lifting to hide acne scarsneutralising any redness and evening out the dips to pave the way for your foundation and concealer.

When it comes to choosing a primer, a great option is one specifically formulated to target redness and correct colour. A green-tinted product might look strange at first! But by cancelling out redness, it helps you conceal pimples and scarring.

This professional-quality, lightweight primer utilises green Spectraflex pigments to neutralise the redness of acne scars. The result? Nothing remotely witchy only a more even skin tone. When applying a colour corrector primer, use a small amount for the most natural look. Place it precisely on and around the acne scar. Then blend carefully.

Try a soft blending brush like the M.A.C Cosmetics 224S Tapered Blending Brush for seamless coverage. Remember: you want to neutralise redness, not turn your whole face green . Apply your primer and then use the blending brush in circular or windshield-wiper motions to completely blend.

What Causes Acne Scars

Inflammatory acne can cause painful, swollen, red, and deep skin lesions that damage the skin and underlying collagen. As these lesions heal, the body produces collagen. Too much or too little collagen production results in acne scars that dont look like the surrounding skin.

A few factors can increase the risk of scarring, including:

  • genetics
  • delaying treatment for inflammatory acne
  • picking or popping acne
  • severity of the acne, which usually correlates to the amount of scarring a person will experience

Hyperpigmentation is a darkened patch where skin has healed. It occurs when inflammatory acne increases the amount of melanin in skin. This pigment gives skin its color. Dark spots usually affect people with darker skin.

How The Pros Cover Up Scars

Using makeup to cover acne scars may take a bit of practice, but professional makeup artists break it down into the basics:

  • Only color correction makeup for under eye circles should be applied after your foundation. This method keeps the coverage from being wiped away or smudged during your foundation application.
  • Color correction makeup to cover acne scars and other discoloration should be applied before your foundation and regular concealer. Once youve neutralized the color issue, you may not need to use as much of your other coverage products.
  • Give color correctors time to set after you apply them. Let it dry for a couple of minutes, then apply your foundation and concealer on top, if you still need it. Dabbing your other products on with a sponge or stippling brush will keep you from wiping away the corrector underneath.

Acne Scar Treatment No: Chemical Peels

Whenever chemical peels are mentioned, an image of Samantha from Sex And The City turning up to Carries book launch party with red raw skin and a black veil immediately comes to mind. But, peels have come a long way since then and, thankfully, veils are no longer required.

The best update? You can now use them in your own bathroom. AHAs and BHAs have become a staple in most skin lovers routines because they tackle an array of issues. From whiteheads to blackheads, acids are a top problem solver if you choose the right one.

Glycolic acid is the most popular when it comes to AHAs. Its the most potent when it comes to exfoliating, which means its incredibly efficient but can be too strong for sensitive skin types.

Lactic acid actually comes from lactose in milk, rather than fruit acids like other AHAs which means its particularly effective when it comes to erasing signs of ageing.

When it comes to BHAs, salicylic acid is the most commonly used. Good news for sensitive skin sufferers, this one’s for you. It helps calm down redness and inflammation, which also makes it super useful when it comes to getting rid of any blemishes.

  • 2Exfoliate your skin with a chemical exfoliator to remove dead skin cells. Choose a product that contains salicylic acid or a similar exfoliator. Apply a dime-sized amount to your face and scrub it into your skin. Rinse with cool water to close your pores.XResearch source
  • The exfoliator will scrub away dead skin cells so your skin feels smoother and your pores are less likely to get clogged. Additionally, it will help fade your acne scars.
  • You can use your exfoliator once a day until your skin looks clear. After that, it’s best to use it just 2-3 times a week so you don’t damage your skin.
  • 3Moisturize your skin with a lightweight, hydrating product. Again, follow your dermatologistâs recommendations for the right daily moisturizer. It should contain SPF to prevent your acne scars from sun damage. Select something that melts into your skin and doesnât leave a greasy residue.XResearch source
  • It’s also a good idea to moisturize your face at night. Just make sure you’re using the lightweight, oil-free moisturizer recommended by your dermatologist.
  • You can also apply your serum at night before you go to bed.

How To Get Rid Of Acne Scars For Good

Put down the colour correcting concealer, this is how to get rid of acne scars for real.

Whether youve tackled your acne once and for all, or you’re still going through the long-winded battle, there is one thing thats inevitable: acne scarring. It doesnt matter if youre a picker or leave them well enough alone, theres still a dark mark left behind every spot.

‘One common mistake I have seen acne patients make is to start treating the acne scarring while still suffering with active breakouts. Before even thinking about treating potential acne scarring, all active acne lesions must be completely cleared’, explains Dr Stefanie Williams, dermatologist and medical director of EUDELO Dermatology & Skin Wellbeing.

Weve all been through the trials and tribulations of experimenting with what works to get skin clear and even. A natural reaction may be to reach for a rough scrub to brush the spots away but an abrasive take often leaves skin angry and red – not ideal. Dont even get us started on the toothpaste myth.

    Stay Hydrated Out There

You might think that moisturizing with body acne is a cardinal sin, but think again. “Use a very lightweight, hydrating body lotion to plump up the skin,” says Rachel Short, director of training at Dermablend. “The key to covering body acne is all about how you treat your canvas. You can get great results as long as it’s clean and hydrated,” she adds. But heed the advice of celeb makeup artist Nick Barose and stay away from lotions that are too rich, or else you’ll deal with unflattering greasiness. Oh, and never forget the most important step: SPF. “Without it, you’ll just make the scarring worse,” says Short.
