How To Cover Acne With Makeup Naturally

Properly Prepare Your Skin

How to Cover Acne & Pimples Naturally using Organic Makeup

Whether you choose to cover your acne scars with makeup or not, starting with clean, properly moisturized skin is a must to keep your skin healthy. Focus on gentle cleaners that wont irritate your skin. You may also want to incorporate a balancing toner depending on your skin type. Lastly, make sure your skin is adequately moisturized and include sunscreen that doesnt clog your pores if youll be outside.

Use A Treatment Product

Any good beauty routine designed to make acne less noticeable begins with treatment. Your daily skincare process should target both individual blemishes and even the appearance of your complexion overall. After cleansing your skin, we recommend using a product such as , especially if you also have an oily skin type. Formulated with kaolin clay and silk, it helps absorb excess oil and control shine for a matte finish.

is another great addition to your morning or nighttime regimen if youre dealing with hyperpigmentation.

This formula is your secret weapon to fight skin discoloration, says Dr. Dara Liotta, a board-certified plastic surgeon and IT Cosmetics Advisory Board member. With 4% niacinamide and ethyl vitamin C, it helps visibly reduce dark spots and improve skin clarity.

Prime For Smooth Skin

According to Chaney, this is the most important step in using makeup to cover acne scars. Primers have many uses: they even out your skins surface, prep your skin for makeup, control excess oil, hold makeup in place and some even fill in acne scars. If you have indented scarring like acne pock marks or icepick or boxcar scars, I love using Dermaflage Topical Filler, says Chaney. It fills in the indented area to eliminate the shadowing caused by uneven skin. Dermaflage creates a thin covering that is completely smudge-proof and friendly to sensitive skin.

When It’s A Flaky Dried Out Mess

Sigh. Thanks to the overzealous use of acne meds, your blemish now looks like it has dandruff double gross. The first step should be to hydrate your skin right away, with a small amount of moisturizer, says Joshua Zeichner, New York City-based dermatologist. But according to Roncal, you can also remove flakes as gently as possible before putting on makeup. I am a fan of soaking flaky blemishes with a warm, wet washcloth and then using a tweezer , working it around the zit, gently pulling and trimming. Dont reach for the concealer just yet: In order to make your skin look as fresh as possible, you want to keep the area hydrated with an oil-free moisturizer, says Moultrie. You also can use a hydrating mist that has essential oils to make your skin look dewy. Both products will prep your skin before your regular concealing routine.

Acne Tip #: Color Correctors

Pimples may come in various sizes, but one thing they all have in common is their tell-tale redness. Regular concealer alone may not do the trick. This is where color correction comes in. To neutralize the appearance of redness, youll want to reach for a green color corrector. We like the Maybelline New York Master Camo Color Correcting Pen. The precision tip makes application easy and the full-coverage formula camouflages signs of redness. Pat the pigment gently on the affected area and then reach for your foundation. No concealer necessary.

Ashleys Experience With Microneedling For Acne Scars

Once Ashleys blemishes were under control, she started looking for a solution to the scars her pimples had left behind. She tried microneedling on June 25, a day after taking the final after photo in her skincare journey. Although Ashley didnt experience any negative side effects from her treatment, she also didnt see much of a positive change.

My skin felt a little bit tighter afterwards, but I didnt really see a massive difference and wasnt over the moon about the results, Ashley said.

While microneedling is a great treatment for indented or pitted acne scars, I wouldnt generally recommend it for the dark marks pimples often leave behind. The reason is because PIH is already caused by overactive pigment cells that have been woken up by the trauma of a zit. Microneedling could potentially keep those pigments cells activated longer by inflicting even more trauma on already injured skin. The goal is to get pigment cells to settle down and go to sleep, so its not ideal to keep them stimulated. Learn more about my thoughts on if microneedling for acne scars is worth it.

When It’s An Oil Slick On Top

If you have grease-prone skin, then you should stay away from oil-based makeup, says Moultrie. Get an oil-free foundation, concealer, and moisturizer. Yes, you still want to add moisture to your slick-ass face. Even if youre in your teens the peak of your oily acne years your skin still has to be hydrated before you put on that dry makeup, otherwise you face will look like a concrete sidewalk.

Generally, after you cover a zit, you should stay away from it, but some oily zits will not be denied a touch-up. If its oozing a clear liquid, press a tissue against it to suck up what you can. Then pull out an emergency zit kit of drier, putty-like concealer and a clean brush. After every use, you want to clean the brush with brush cleaner or rubbing alcohol, says Roncal. The last thing you want is to add more bacteria to this zit.

Dab green concealer on breakouts to tone down the angry red color. Do not rub rather, pat gently with your finger or clean makeup sponge to blend. The green color should be blended out thoroughly.

An Unexpected Change: I Felt More Confident Being My Natural Self

One of the biggest downsides of this experiment was how I felt about myself at the beginning without my usual makeup routine. I felt self-conscious and people noticed, asking me what was different. A few people asked if I was sick. Others wanted to know if everything was okay. I looked paler than usual. I felt like I looked tired and dull. One person even commented that they never knew I had acne. I grunted with frustration because my makeup tricks were working so well and now my secret was out.

This feeling lasted for half the experiment, but by the start of week two, I started feeling confident in my natural skin, which was less dull and looked fresh and clearer than ever.

Yes, I still had acne and my decade-old acne scars didnt go anywhere, but my skin didnt have as many nasty breakouts or sudden spurts of pimples. I had my usual hormonal acne on my chin and cheeks, but less than usual. When my confidence came through, people started to comment less on my skin and lack of makeup and I started to hardly notice my face wasnt painted.

How A Makeup Artist With Acne Cleared Her Skin

HOW TO COVER ACNE SCARS | how to cover acne with makeup

During our call, I asked Ashley a few questions about her breakouts to better understand what had gotten her to this point. We spoke about acne treatments shed tried , the routine that finally cleared her skin and which Renée Rouleau product she considers her holy grail.

Renée Rouleau: When did you first start experiencing breakouts?

Ashley Landry:I started getting regular breakouts about a year ago. It was the first full year of my business, so I think stress was definitely a factor. I had a few cystic breakouts on my right cheek almost all the time. Because Ive always been a makeup person, Ive also always been a huge skincare personthe two really go hand in hand. If your skin doesnt look good, your makeup wont either.

RR: Did you try any treatments for your acne?

AL:Yeah, I tried out an all-natural line after I bought a bunch of stuff during their Black Friday sale. That was kind of a turning point for me. The products really didnt agree with my skin, and between that and the hormonal acne I was already having, my breakouts ended up getting worse than ever. I tried using Proactive to fix it, but that made my skin so, so dry to the point where it hurt. Thats when I decided to start trying Renée Rouleau products.

When It’s A Whitehead

Start with a clean, dry face . Its really important that your concealer has a dry, thickish consistency almost like a putty, says makeup artist Mally Roncal, founder of Mally Beauty. The wetter and more slippery a concealer it is, the harder it is for it to adhere to that mound/bubble. This kind of concealer is usually going to be found in a pot or tube, not in a wand that type is too thin. Once youve found your spackle, use a small brush, like a precision eyeliner brush, to cover both the whitehead and the red, inflamed area surrounding it. Be as targeted as possible. You could even use a magnifying mirror, says Roncal. You dont want to cover any of the good skin around the pimple or youll create a look at my zit bulls-eye. After application, give the zit a gentle pat with a finger so it doesnt look tall. Translucent powder can make a whitehead look shiny and white instead set your concealer with a fluffy brush dipped in a powder foundation that matches your skin tone.

If the zit refuses to be covered by concealer and is in a favorable place a chin or where Cindy Crawfords mole is I have been known to take a black eyeliner and make it a mole, says Roncal. When I first met my husband, I had a mole, and a month later he asked me, What happened to your beauty mark?

  • 1Apply blush. Blush keeps your face looking rosy. When used correctly, it gives the appearance of looking sun kissed and happy, and helps you avoid looking too pale, which could give the impression you are ill or nervous. Start at the apples of your cheeks and move up toward your temples using a blush brush. Blend using your fingers so you do not see an obvious line where you applied.XResearch sourceXResearch source
  • If you are fair skinned, stick with soft pinks, peaches or light corals and apply lightly in order to keep a natural look. Applying too darkly or using a darker color will look too dramatic.
  • For a medium skin tone, use pinks and peaches and avoid applying too darkly. Refrain from using colors with a blue undertone, as those could create a bruised look rather than the naturally sun-kissed you are going for.
  • If your skin tone is dark, use deep reds, oranges, or browns to highlight your cheeks.
  • 2Finish with your lips. For a natural yet lasting look, use lip balm, lipliner, and lipstick. Make sure your lip balm has an SPF of 15 or more to protect your lips. Your lip liner and lipstick should be a softer shade that resembles your natural lip color. We are enhancing your natural beauty, not changing it!XResearch source
