How To Get Rid Of Chest Acne Using Facial Acne Treatments

Your chest acne probably wont respond to the acne treatment products you use on your face because the skin on your face is so much more delicate than that on your chest. Chest acne typically needs products that can get through thicker skin to cleanse the whole pore, meaning it has to be stronger than something you would use on your face. However, you want to be cautious of jumping to something much stronger right away.

A good rule of thumb is to use your facial treatments on your chest for 6 weeks.

Then if theres no improvement, check the active ingredient concentration on each of your products, and purchase other face washes or serums that have a slightly higher concentration. Repeat the 6 week trial and continue upping the active ingredient if you still dont see results.

If you find yourself using products with a 5% concentration and your acne still isnt improving, you might want to speak with a dermatologist to develop a plan for how to get rid of chest acne.

What To Do About Chest Acne

Acne is a skin condition that nearly everyone deals with at some point in their lives. It’s caused by the accumulation of dead skin cells that block your pores and leads to an abundance of a specific type of bacteria present on the skin called propionibacterium acne. As a result, your skin becomes inflamed and causes whiteheads, blackheads or pimples to form.

Unfortunately, acne has no boundaries. It’s more common for teenagers, but it can affect people of all ages, and about equally between men and women. Acne also can appear anywhere you have oil glands in your skin, so it can occur on your back, face, stomach or chest.

Chest acne develops the same way as other acne, but some factors can affect its formation, including:

  • Using skin care products that prevent or hinder water loss
  • Friction from clothing
  • Excessive sweating

Chest acne isn’t the result of poor hygiene. It’s not caused by dirty skin and can actually be made worse with harsh soap or chemicals and rough scrubbing.

Other factors that worsen acne include:

There are many treatments available for chest acne to help you avoid skin scars, make acne less noticeable and lower the emotional stress caused by the acne. Use gentle scrubs and noncomedogenic creams so skin pores dont get clogged. Over-the-counter body washes that include salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide can provide some relief of mild inflammatory acne. Avoid coarse or rough body scrubs, since they’re traumatic to the skin.

Not Washing Your Clothes After Sweating

Sweat, dirt and other bacteria can stick to your clothes if you dont wash them after a workout. Make a habit of tossing your dirty laundry directly into the wash and also bring a change of clothes with you to exercise, especially if you sweat profusely. Sitting in your sweaty clothing for too long can cause body acne to form. Get out of gym clothes or anything sweaty as soon as possible, Dr. Houshmand says. The faster the sweat evaporates, the less likely you are to develop bumps.

Shaving Your Chest Can Also Lead To Chest Acne

If you shave your chest, similar advice applies: avoid extra chemicals in shaving cream, or use shaving gel, and shave in the shower and be sure to rinse thoroughly. Another important way you can prevent acne is always using a sharp razor. More serious chest acne can develop if you use a dull razor rather than cleanly cutting the hair, a dull razor will often push the hair back into the hair follicle so it grows inward, and the skin will grow over it and form red bumps. These red bumps make up what is typically called razor burn and is not a type of acne, but it can lead to a very serious form of acne, acne keloidalis nuchae .

AKN, which is common among Hispanic, black, or African American men, is a chronic inflammatory condition where the immune system attacks the hair follicle, resulting in raised, keloid-like acne. If your razor burn looks more like large bumps or raised scars, you should see a dermatologist. They can provide antibiotics, prescription acne medication, or even surgical removal of the keloids.

What Are The Risk Factors For Back Acne

Several factors increase the risk of developing back acne. However, not everyone with risk factors will have a problem with acne breakouts on their back. Risk factors include:

    • Age: Teenagers most commonly get acne, including back acne, but it can affect anyone.
    • Certain medications: Examples include corticosteroids, anabolic steroids, lithium and phenytoin.
    • Diet: High-carbohydrate or high-glycemic diets may contribute to acne breakouts, according to some study results.
    • Heredity: When a parent has had problems with back acne, you are more likely to have the same problem.
    • Skin environment: Contributors to back acne breakouts may include greasy or oily skin care products, tight or occlusive clothing, high humidity, heavy , and friction or pressure from equipment, such as sports pads or straps.
    • Stress: Stress can increase breakouts in people who already have back acne.

Research also suggests smoking may be linked to acne breakouts in general.

Reducing your risk of back acne

You cant prevent or avoid back acne breakouts altogether if you are prone to them. But you may be able to lower or reduce your breakout triggers by:

    • Cleaning your skin with gentle cleansers and lukewarm water. Hot water can irritate the skin and worsen acne. Avoid irritating skincare products, including antibacterial soaps, abrasive scrubs or scrubbing tools, and alcohol-based products, including astringents. Instead, use fragrance-free, oil-free, non-comedogenic products.

    Try A Mask And Exfoliate

The use of acne and purifying masks, once or twice a week, is another great way to clean and soothe breakouts on the chest area, says Aguilar. Additionally, exfoliating products on the chest area are just as vital to use as on the face. This will help to remove dead skin cells and congestion, and help maintain uniformity from the head to the décolleté.

    Do Pancakes Cause Acne

Dairy products, such as the milk and butter found in pancakes, spike hormone production which causes clogged pores and acne, while sugar spikes our blood sugar levels which exacerbates inflammation in our skin. If youre currently reconsidering your breakfast, just know everything is okay in moderation.

Is Cystic Acne Caused By Hormonal Imbalance

Due to the fact that cystic acne is only caused by a change in hormones, genetics, and the oil production level in the skin, it must be treated by a dermatologist. Home skin care remedies as well as over-the-counter topical treatment and medication rarely work and can take a very long time to show any sort of result.

Laundry Detergents With Dyes Or Perfumes

Wearing clean clothes can typically help prevent acne because they help prevent dirt and other contaminants from getting stuck in the pores. Some people may find that certain laundry detergents, particularly ones with dyes and perfumes, cause an acne breakout. A person who traces their outbreaks to laundry detergent should look for dye and perfume-free detergent.

    Keep Your Chest Clean

Cleanliness is key to fighting the bacteria that is the root of acne. You want to keep the skin on your chest clean. Showering post-workout is ideal but if you cant, I highly recommend carrying portable toner wipes, says Fernandez. Also, avoid using harsh soaps or scrubs on the chest as they can aggravate your skin over time. It is better to use scrubby gloves or a loofah once a week to keep skin exfoliated more gently.

Skin Thickness Contributes To Chest Acne

How to cure back & chest acne

In some ways, facial and chest acne are similar: both are caused by a combination of oil and dead skin buildup, acne-causing bacteria, and inflammation. But your skin sheds dead skin cells faster than your chest, meaning exfoliation is more important for facial skin care, and your chest has larger pores, meaning it is usually more vulnerable to bacteria. The biggest difference between how to improve facial acne and how to get rid of chest acne depends on the thickness of your skin in both areas.

Skin is made up of three main layers: the deepest is the hypodermis, or the subcutaneous layer the middle layer is called the dermis, and the thin top layer is the epidermis.

The overall thickness of these layers is significantly thinner on your face, making it more sensitive. This is why you should use a gentle skin care system, like Exposed Skincare. This 3-step skin care routine cleanses, treats, and moisturizes your skin with the perfect combination of benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, and soothing natural productsfor your face that is.

For your chest, youll want to try an acne treatment with a higher concentration, like Exposed Skincares full body acne treatment.
