How Long Do Acne Scars Take To Heal

This Is How You Really Get Rid Of Acne Scars

How Long Will it Take for Acne Scars to Clear, Accutane Side Effects, How to Clear Acne | FAQs

Dr. Caren Campbell, MD, in her San Francisco office

Acne scarring plagues the pores of so many who have long-since recovered from active acne. With the recent advent of laser technology and dermatological research, much progress has been made in understanding how to best care for patients while undergoing treatment and in improving treatment efficacy itself.

I recently discussed the subject with leading San Francisco dermatologist Dr. Caren Campbell, M.D., a physician who has treated many Millennial professionals in the area struggling to remove acne scars. Below, she shares the recent, notable progress that has been made in acne-scarring treatment options, how to know if scars will fade on their own, when to seek medical intervention and the questions to ask your physician.

First, what causes acne scars?

Campbell: Acne scars result from cystic, inflamed acne lesions. When the clogged, inflamed pore ruptures, the skins attempt to repair the broken skin isnt as flawless as the original skin. Depending on the depth of the ruptured pore, varying types of acne scars can be producedatrophic, icepick, boxcar, rolling. When the body overshoots the wound healing response keloids or hypertrophic scars can form, which represent excess scar tissue formation.

Will they ever fade on their own?

Are There Any Tests Performed To Diagnose The Type Of Acne Scar

A visual examination by a dermatologist is enough to determine a diagnosis. Your dermatologist may also determine how severe your acne scarring is. One measurement system has four grades of acne scarring: macular, mild, moderate and severe. Grade one, macular, is a scar thats red but flat. Grade two, mild, is a scar that can easily be covered by makeup or facial hair. Grade three, moderate, is obvious at a social distance. It is not as easily covered by makeup or facial hair. Finally, grade four, severe, is scarring that is very evident at a social distance greater than 50 centimeters . It is unlikely that facial hair or makeup will completely cover up these scars.

Are Acne Scars Permanent

Now time for some good news. Christenson says there are definitely things you can do to reduce acne scarring once you have it.

“The best course of treatment depends on the type of scarring you have, with indentation scarring often requiring more advanced treatment,” says Christenson.

For discoloration acne scarring, start by trying the at-home retail topicals aimed at counteracting hyperpigmentation, such as brightening serums or retinol-containing products.

“The one watch-out about using retinol is that it can make your skin more sun-sensitive. It’s always important to use sunscreen to protect your skin, but be even more diligent about applying sunscreen while using a retinol product,” warns Christenson.

For hyperpigmentation that doesn’t respond to retail products, and for the deeper indentation scarring, Christenson recommends the more advanced treatment options a medical aesthetician can provide, including:

  • Chemical peels
  • Microneedling
  • Prescription brightening products

“Chemical peels are great for both discoloration and indentation scarring, and these peels can also help with what’s called ice pick scarring very deep indentations that form due to severe acne lesions,” explains Christenson. “Microneedling, which uses tiny needles to stimulate your skin’s healing process, works incredibly well to reduce indentation scarring and make your skin look smoother.”

Three Types Of Acne Scars

So, what are acne scars exactly? Its best to think of acne scars like a footprint left in the sand. Generally, most acne scars leave a depression or a spot of darker pigment on the skin, which marks the smooth, even-toned appearance of the skin. Acne scars generally form while your skin is healing from acne.

Not everyone will form the same type of acne scars. In fact, depending on your genetics and your skin type, some people are more prone to forming certain types of scars. As a note, while its more common for people with chronic or severe acne to develop scars, people with sensitive skin types can also more easily form scars, even with mild acne.

  • Don’t let the affected area remain dry for a longer period of time.
  • Avoid having oysters, as they have high level of iodine which worsens the case.
  • dot-circle-o Don’t touch the affected area with dirty hands.
  • dot-circle-o Do not squeeze the acne. This is one mistake which almost all of us make, but DON’T DO IT.
  • dot-circle-o Stick to one treatment or DIY method to treat your acne at a time, don’t change it every day.

  • Start Acne Treatment Ahead Of Time

If you break out once a month or in a predictable cycle, start treating your skin early.

The type of acne treatment that works best varies from person to person, but consider applying your acne serum, retinol product or antibacterial topical before the breakout even begins.

“In addition to these topicals, wearing sunscreen can help prevent any hyperpigmentation that may occur as a result of acne,” adds Christenson. “Just be sure to choose a sunscreen that’s appropriate for your skin. A sunscreen that clogs your pores can make your acne worse, causing more chance for scarring.”

The bodys largest organ might seem barely more than cellular wrapping paper, but skin has roles that range from fending off microorganisms to regulating body temperature. It also has a considerable flaw: severely damaged skin can heal, but it cant regenerate. Instead, it forms scars. These marks are not just cosmetic defects. Scar tissue can inhibit a persons movement and, because it lacks sweat glands, prevent the body from cooling off. Although scars seem to be thicker than normal skin, the tissue is actually weaker.

Scarring seems to be an inevitable part of being human. But three decades ago, it became clear that the youngest patients dont scar. When Michael Harrison, a paediatric surgeon at the University of California, San Francisco, began to perform the first ever surgeries on fetuses, he noticed something curious about the babies who survived. Incisions he had made in them in the womb seemed to heal without scarring.

Over-the-counter or nonprescription products may also help minimize the appearance of acne scars.

Even though dark spots may fade over time on their own, an over-the-counter medicated dark spot remover with hydroquinone may help these scars fade quicker, notes Yoram Harth, MD, a dermatologist and the medical director of MDacne in San Francisco.

In addition, acne treatments with alpha hydroxy acids can stimulate the growth of new skin, minimizing the appearance of old scars while simultaneously preventing the formation of new acne, says the Mayo Clinic. When shopping for an acne treatment, look for products that contain alpha hydroxy acids like glycolic acid and lactic acid.

If over-the-counter products dont fade acne scars, concealer and foundation can help camouflage discoloration.

Acne Scars And How Long They Take To Heal

How to get rid of acne scars? | Answers Dr. Jaishree Sharad

ByHarry Wallett | Submitted On January 25, 2009

Acne scars are generally one of the most distressing factors of having acne, they can even be worse than having acne itself, as they take longer to heal and can look worse then a mundane pimple. Sufferers with acne scars usually have low self-esteem and confidence directly because of these scars.

Naturally, they want to get rid of them as quickly as possible, but how do you go about getting rid of acne scars?

First of all you must look at what causes them and in turn you can target this cause and treat it at its core. When the pimples appears, the body releases many white blood cells, these white blood cells form the scars you see on your skin.

One of the best proven and effective way to get rid of acne scars is quite simple time. All acne scars will heal and fade over time, but this may taken months of even years, and nobody wants to wait that long for something that visible to be treated, you want to speed it up as much as possible.

There are many factors affecting healing period, such as the type of acne – nodule or pimple and if you picked/squeezed it before it was ready to be popped. You must also be aware that all acne scars will not heal completely, the skin has been seriously damaged and that is something that can be very hard to heal.

Ways to speed up the healing process

-Apply vitamin E cream to acne scars, this will help speed up the process and moisturise the skin.

-Apply tea tree oil every night.

How To Use Tretinoin Cream For Acne Scars

Using tretinoin is a simple process. Tretinoin is sold as a cream, gel or liquid, all of which are designed to be applied directly to your skin. Our Complete Guide to Using Tretinoin for Acne covers the entire process of using tretinoin for acne prevention or acne scar healing.

When youre using tretinoin for acne scar flattening, removal and healing, keep these key tips in mind:

    • Talk to your doctor before using tretinoin. Tretinoin is a prescription medication, meaning youll need your doctors approval before using it. Your dermatologist can provide expert advice on whether tretinoin is the right option for your acne scars.

    • Consider starting with a low to moderate strength of tretinoin. Tretinoin cream, gel and other products come in several concentrations, with the lower strength options the best bet for minimizing side effects during the first few weeks of treatment.

    • Avoid excessive sun exposure while using tretinoin. Tretinoin can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight, meaning its best to avoid long periods of sun exposure and use an SPF 30+ sunscreen for the first few weeks of using topical tretinoin.

    • Consider using a moisturizer with tretinoin. Tretinoin can dry out your skin and even cause peeling, flaking and itchiness. Using a moisturizer with tretinoin is one of the most effective ways to mitigate and manage these side effects.
