How To Get Cleared Of Acne Scars
After your acne has gone, it is common to experience scarring or hyperpigmentation. Acne scarring usually goes away on its own, but when dealing with cystic acne scars it can often take up to six months before your scars fade. Some scars are more stubborn, and treatment is a necessity to ensure they disappear.
The best serum for acne pigmentation scars is the Vitamin C Brightening Drops. This serum combats hyperpigmentation with vitamin C. Vitamin C increases the collagen production in the skin and brightens your complexion. This reduces the appearance of pigmentation and gives you an even skin tone. This product also contains hyaluronic acid which supports collagen in your skin, minimizing the appearance of pigmentation. This product is perfect for treating acne pigmentation scars, giving your brighter even skin.
The best acne scar treatment is the Retinol Reface. This product contains a retinol-like peptide and retinol microspheres to stimulate collagen production. This speeds up the healing process diminishing the appearance of acne scars on your face. Retinol Reface is gentler than a typical retinol, making it perfect for treating sensitive cystic acne as well as visible scarring on your skin.
Wash Your Makeup Brushes
Make sure to wash your makeup brushes regularly with brush cleanser or baby shampoo. If you use makeup sponges, wash those too. These tools can accumulate bacteria, which can lead to breakouts. Dirty brushes can make the most expensive skincare routines go to waste.
Here’s how to properly wash your face brushes.

The 3 Things That Actually Cleared My Acne
Sometimes I think Ive shared a post on here when Ive actually just written it in my head. Or maybe it was all just a dream? Who knowsBut what I do know is that after almost 6 years of dealing with adult acne, Ive finally figured out what works for my body.
Now I just want to preface this post by reminding you that this is what worked for me. It may not work for you. How do I know this? Because if someone has written anything about clearing adult acne then there is a 99% chance that Ive read it. And of this advice Ive only taken 3 things away. The 3 things that actually cleared my acne. The rest of it was all just a waste of time and money.for me.
So take this all in with a grain of salt but also just remember that experimentation is totally fine but if its not working for your body, let.it.go.
Another quick thing to discuss Im okay with getting a zit here and there. I have zero expectation of perfect skin. But years of chronic acne definitely haunted me and knocked my confidence so if youre struggling, I get it. That being said, no one has perfect skin so release any expectations of a perfectly clear canvas.
Okay lets discuss
Why Am I Suddenly Getting Hormonal Acne
During the menstrual cycle, hormone levels fluctuate in the body, which can trigger acne breakouts and the appearance of blackheads. Pregnancy also causes changes in hormone levels, as progesterone and estrogen are produced at higher levels, which can result in hormonal acne. Equally, if you have stopped taking the contraceptive pill, you are very likely to experience acne due to the changes in estrogen and progesterone levels in your body. It is very common to experience cystic acne or see the appearance of whiteheads and blackheads as the change from synthetically regulated hormone levels to your natural hormones will cause a hormonal imbalance immediately after you stop taking the pill. As your skin adjusts to your hormones, you may experience acne. This process equally occurs during natural changes in hormone levels such as puberty and menopause.
High stress levels are another common cause for hormonal acne, as increased cortisol causes acne. This means that if you have been experiencing a prolonged period of stress you may see the effects on your skin with the appearance of hormonal acne

I Stopped Picking My Face
This was the hardest one for me to do out of everything on this list. Honestly it took me a year to break my habit of pimple popping. What finally got me to stop? I had to stop looking at my face in the mirror every time I went to the bathroom. So when I wash my hands, I force myself to ONLY look down at my hands and not look up in the mirror.
Another thing that makes it easier to resist popping pimples is setting up appointments for a doctor or esthetician to do it for you. This way you only have to hold out until your next appointment. An esthetician or doctor is more likely to do an extraction properly and make sure that your pimple doesnt become inflamed and turn into a huge cyst the size of a marble that squats on your face for a month. And when acne is extracted properly, its also less likely to scar.
Key Learning #9: the less you touch your face at all, including popping pimples, the clearer your skin will be. And weirdly, the less you pay attention to and obsess over your face, the easier it is to not touch it.
Skin Care 101the Best Skin Care Products For Acne
But taking a break from makeup never seemed like a viable option. I have places to go and people to see! So over the years, Ive done everything short of packing away my makeup bag in hopes of helping my skin. I’ve tried every topical option out there, not to mention cosmetic procedures like facials, chemical peels, cryotherapy and face massages . Ive tried eliminating food in hopes the acne would calm down. But it never fixed the underlying cause of my acne, which dermatologists over the years have diagnosed as hormonal and stress-related, and worsened by wearing too much makeup and not washing it off properly.
When all else failed, I was left with nothing else in my arsenal but to part with the makeup bag I held clutched to my chest.
Taking a break from makeup can help the skin repair itself. Removing physical blockages from the surface of the skin can help clear pores and improve any makeup-related acne, says Zeichner. If you have a condition where the skin barrier is disrupted, for example in severe dryness or eczema, not wearing makeup can allow the skin to heal itself.
So I finally decided to spend two weeks going sans make-up, putting all of my favorite concealers and foundations in a bag and hiding it in the back of my closet. Heres what happened to my skin during those two weeks.

Ice Your Acne To Bring The Swelling Down
If you really must do something about your pimple beyond washing your face and spot treating, ice or a cold compress can help reduce inflammation. Wrap an ice cube or the compress in a soft tissue or cloth and apply it to your zit for 20-30 seconds at a time, a few times a day. In case of an emergency , you can also see a dermatologist for a cortisone injection, which can help shrink the cyst down quickly in a day or two.
Be Consistent With Your Treatment
If you want great skin, care for it each day. Sporadic care won’t do it. And don’t expect any overnight miracles. It takes time for skin-clearing ingredients to kick in. Starting a skincare routine now will give you plenty of time for your skin to adjust by the time you walk through those double doors.

You Aren’t On The Right Program
The best over-the-counter products to combat acne are salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide. Salicylic acid acts as an exfoliant, cleansing your pores and clogged follicles of excess sebum while calming down irritation. Benzoyl peroxide is proven to kill the bacteria that causes acne. Used in tandem, these 2 ingredients can help some clear up skin in a matter of weeks.
Benzyl alcohol is a fruit-derived aromatic alcohol primarily used in product formulation as a preservative to stop microorganisms from overgrowing in products, which might later lead to an infection.
There is a host of cleansers, pads, and gels you can use to treat your skin. Follow the directions so you don’t abuse your skin. Get the full scoop on my favorite acne products, a 3-punch system, and aspirin mask recipe in Best Treatment Options for Acne.
Try To Keep Your Hands Off Your Face
One of the most basic tips for how to get rid of acne is simply to keep your hands to yourself. Your hands arent always clean, and dirt under your fingernails and improper squeezing can cause acne to spread or lead to further infection, Dr. Hammerman says. Plus, popping can lead to pitted scars, which stick around much longer than that pimple would.

I Cut Dairy Out Completely
When I first started seeing Kim at skinSALVATION she asked me how often I ate gluten, soy, dairy, and refined sugar. I told her I almost never ate gluten, soy, or refined sugar but would eat dairy about twice a month when it was on pizza, which is my favorite food. She advised me to cut dairy out completely for at least 3 months to see what would happen with my acne because she said that dairy is one of the biggest acne triggers with her clients. Telling me not to eat pizza was like telling me not to breathe. But fortunately my vanity won out, so I listened to her.
Also, why did I have to cut dairy out for at least 3 months? Why not a few weeks? Because as I learned from Kim, acne seeds form beneath the skin after you eat something that creates them, and these acne seeds dont create pimples visible to your eye until about a month later. This is why people have a hard time figuring out which foods give them acne. They think that if they see a pimple it was from something they ate the day before. This isnt actually the case.
Key Learning #4: when a food gives you acne, eating even tiny amounts of it may still cause massive breakouts. You never know how sensitive your body truly is to something until you cut it out completely to give your body the chance to heal.
Key Learning #5: because acne seeds take so long to become pimples, you have to cut acne-triggering foods out for a few months to really see the benefit of the diet change.

How I Naturally Healed My Acne My Story
Ive been to many dermatologists, and tried a countless number of creams, ointments, washes, antibiotics and spironolactone. Unfortunately, all these products did was cost money, and destroy my skins microbiome as well as my gut microbiome .
Over the years Ive done tons of research, read many books, and listened to a lot of podcasts about acne. And, of course have my own experience with acne over the past decade.
Below I will share with you my experience with acne, and what worked for me to heal my acne AND body. Keep in mind that this is my story, and that it will not work for everyone. I am not a doctor, and this post is not to be treated as medical advice. At the end of this post I will have a list of resources that have helped me along the way. I encourage you to view the resources and do your own research.
After The Experiment: Time To Clean Out My Makeup Bag
When the experiment ended, I was happy to be able to grab my makeup bag and rummage through it. But this time I didnt quickly load on concealer, instead I took inventory.
Zeichner says that its important to look at the makeup were using and if we dont want to go makeup free entirely, we should switch from a liquid foundation to powder-based makeup.
Powder or mineral makeup tends not to block pores or be as heavy on the surface of the skin, says Zeichner. Alternatively, stick to a tinge of moisturizer that can help improve skin hydration while offering some degree of cosmetic coverage.
Jaliman recommends using lighter products like BB or CC creams or just an under eye concealer to help minimize the appearance of circles and dark bags if you want to try going makeup free. Dr. Peterson Pierre of the Pierre Skin Care Institute says to choose oil-free and non-comedogenic products so you don’t clog pores and possibly cause breakouts.
I decided to toss out products that were old or had ingredients that are known to clog pores. I also vowed to myself that when I was wearing makeup, I would work extra hard to make sure I was taking it off properly and cleansing at the end of the day.

In The Process Of Never Giving Up I Finally Figured Out What Works To Keep My Skin Clear
Sharing about my skin struggles is nothing new, and I know many of you can relate. For the first time ever, I have a positive relationship with my skin. What worked for me is a combination of things, not just one thing. It has nothing to do with supplements because this is way bigger than one magic pill.
Trust me, Ive tried every pill and supplement out there from Accutane, antibiotics, DIM, milk thistle, zinc, adaptogens, apple cider vinegar the list goes on and my bank statements can verify. I wont even list the hundreds of products Ive tried since junior high that gave me high hopes but never addressed the actual problem.
Do Certain Foods Cause Acne
For the most part, hormonal changes in the body drive acne. There is some evidence that skim milk, whey protein and diets high in sugar may cause acne breakouts, although this remains controversial.
Eating a balanced, nutritious diet with plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, especially those rich with vitamin C and beta carotene, helps reduce inflammation. There is also some evidence that eating fish can help.

The Aftermath: Healing Acne Scars & Maintaining Clear Skin
Once my acne was at bay, I, unfortunately, was left with some scarring and pigmentation. Here are some natural ways that I reduced that:
- Osmia Organics Spot Treatment if a pimple starts to form
- Continue eating healthy and living as much of a non-toxic life as possible, as well as maintaining a consistent skincare ritual from above
Remind Me What Causes Breakouts
At the root of all acne is a clogged pore. Your pores, which are the opening that surrounds each hair follicle, are an important part of your skin because they also house your sebaceous glands.
These glands secrete sebum through the pore opening, which helps keep your skin soft and protected. But if the pore gets clogged by dirt, dead skin cells, excess oil, and possibly bacteria, youve got a recipe for a pimple.
Sometimes, just taking better care of your skin by cleansing or exfoliating regularly can be enough to prevent acne. For many others, though, the situation is more complicated. And, especially when youre an adult, trying to figure out whats causing your acne can get pretty frustrating.

Can Acne Cause Scars
Acne does sometimes result in scarring. It happens when the acne penetrates the skin and damages the deeper layers. Inflammation makes the acne pores swell and breakdown occurs in the wall of the pore. Scarring can, of course, be a source of anxiety, which is normal. But before it can be treated, your healthcare provider will determine what type of acne caused the scars.
There are several available treatment options. Chemical peels, dermabrasion, laser resurfacing, microneedling and surgery can all be used to treat acne scars.
