How Do You Know If You Have Fungal Acne

Oral Fluconazole To Treat Fungal Acne

How to tell if you have FUNGAL ACNE | Malassezia Folliculitis

Fluconazole is a prescription oral medication that can be used to treat fungal and yeast infections. This oral medication is needed when topical medications have been ineffective in fully eliminating the fungal acne. Fluconazole is commonly paired with a ketoconazole topical cream. The treatment can be undertaken in one week with a 100mg daily dose of the medication or over the course of three weeks with a 200mg daily dose.

So Really What Causes Fungal Acne

Taking antibiotics: If youve recently gone through a round of antibiotics, that could be what triggered the fungal acne. Healthy skin needs a balance of bacteria and fungus. Taking antibiotics causes the bacteria to go away, so theres nothing there to keep the fungus in check, thus creating an overgrowth.

Wearing tight, sweaty clothes:We get it. Sometimes life gets busy, and theres not much time to change, take a shower, and wash your workout gear after every sweat session. However, this bad habit may be costing you healthy, clear skin. Fungi thrive in moist environments. So to prevent it, be sure to change and shower after a workout and not re-wear dirty workout clothes.

Genetics, sadly: Some folks are just more predisposed to an overgrowth of yeast than others, making them more susceptible to getting fungal acne. Chronic conditions that impact your immune system such as diabetes can also increase the likelihood of having fungal acne.

What Are Closed Comedones And Comedonal Acne

Comedones are a specific kind of acne. Unlike inflammatory acne, comedonal acne doesnt cause cysts and nodules, making it a milder form of acne.

There are two kinds of comedonal acne: open comedones , and closed comedones .

Despite the myth, blackheads arent black due to dirt. Since the acne is open, the blackness you see is the oxidation of the debris clogging your pores.

Whiteheads also arent always white. They can often present themselves as red bumps, making closed comedones and fungal acne very similar.

Medications Which Cause Fungal Infections

Uncontrolled yeast growth, or an imbalance between the amount of yeast and bacteria that occur on your skin, can also be a side effect of certain medications. Oral antibiotics, for example, are prescribed to kill bacteria in your body that are making you sick. However, antibiotics can also kill the good bacteria that is serving a positive purpose, like the bacteria on your skin. When this good bacteria is reduced, there is an imbalance between the bacteria and the yeast on your skin which can lead to Malassezia folliculitis. Using skincare products that contain high amounts of oil, such as coconut oil, can further feed the growth of fungal acne and clog pores.

How To Cure Fungal Acne At Home

There are several habits that you can change at home to reduce the likelihood of developing fungal acne. The first major factor in preventing fungal acne is improving hygiene. If you shower more regularly and remove sweaty clothes immediately after a work out, you are removing yourself from the moist environment in which yeast thrives. As a part of your shower, you can include washing your body with Nizoral dandruff shampoo which can help reduce the amount of yeast on your body. It is also helpful adjust your clothing choices and wear loose clothing when you exercise and a more breathable, cotton, face mask. There are also over-the-counter anti fungal creams that are typically used to treat other fungal conditions like athletes foot that you can use easily at home to address fungal acne. It is important to look for creams that contain ketoconazole or clotrimazole.

Skin Conditions Associated With Malassezia

Unfortunately, pathogenic malassezia isnt limited to just pityrosporum folliculitis. Research has shown that this fungus may play a role in all the following skin conditions:

  • Atopic dermatitis a.ka. eczema .
  • Dandruff .
  • Psoriasis .
  • Seborrheic dermatitis .
  • Tinea versicolor a.k.a. pityriasis versicolor .

And of course..

  • Malassezia folliculitis .

Because there is a lot of overlap between all these skin conditions, the treatment guidelines I will list in this blog post for pityrosporum folliculitiscan be applied to treat many of the other diseases with success.

Fun fact #1: M. furfur is a combination of pityrosporum orbiculare and pityrosporum ovale.

Perhaps you noticed that M. globosa and M. furfur are found in all of the skin conditions above. Youll want to remember these asswads. For many of us, eradicating these suckers will do the trick and cure us of our skin woes.

NOTE: I say many of us because thats not always true. The pathology of malassezia is very complicated, and varies tremendously according to geographical location and ethnicity.

For example, Iranians with seborrheic dermatitis have very high levels of M. globosa and almost no M. restricta, and M. sympodialis, whereas South Koreans with seborrheic dermatitis show the opposite predominantly high levels of M. restricta, and M. sympodialis, and a lot less M. globosa.

The differences in what species cause the problem probably has to do with climate. We will discuss this more later.

What Is Fungal Acne Anyway

We all have a magical ecosystem of microflora living on our skin. What is that? Bacteria, yeasts and fungi! The good, the bad and the ugly living in harmony together on your skin. Untildysbiosis occurs. How does this happen? Well, there are a number of possibilities which may lead to the skin responding in a way that shows up as red, itchy acneic looking skin. This fungus then feeds on oil on our skin and inside our pores including other oils or oil-rich ingredients that are applied to the skin. Yes! Your products that you thought were helping solve the problem could very well be perpetuating it.

Thank you so much for this extremely important contribution!!! As with so many of your other posts, it is so well-researched, thorough and helpful! There is just so much amazing information that I have read it at least 10 times!

It seems that many people, like myself, are still struggling with reading the ingredient list of products, especially when it comes to esters that comes in so many forms. Maybe this is just a drop in the bucket, but I decided to go through all the comments and pulled out all the problematic ingredients mentioned and put them in alphabetical order. If I made any mistakes, please correct me! Hope this helps!

What Causes Pityrosporum Folliculitis

Malassezia, the yeast responsible for fungal acne, lives on everyones skin. Its only when its balance is thrown out of whack that an outbreak occurs. Pityrosporum folliculitis stems from a range of imbalances.

Your skin microbiome, the balance of beneficial and troublesome microorganisms on your skin, can shift from changes in your diet, environment, medication, workout regimen, skincare routine, or dozens of other reasons. Sometimes it will rebalance itself, and other times, youll need to step in to help it along. Yeasts love warm, wet environments, so keeping skin dry and clean during workouts and after can help. Yeasts also love sugar and carbs, so you may notice improvement after cutting back on sweets.

Not every instance of fungal acne gets scientifically investigated, but folliculitis that follows specific medical conditions grabs scientists attention. Researchers also have observed fungal acne crop up:

  • After taking antibiotics
  • If you have HIV and AIDS
  • After spending time in intensive care
  • After transplant surgery, Note: patients take immunosuppressants after transplants so the common thread seems to be a weakened immune system

Or, you could have fungal acne without having experienced any of these. There are plenty of conditions that create the ideal environment for fungal acne that scientists havent investigated yet.

High Levels Of Mercury In The Body

Candida has the ability to live and even flourish in environments that contain heavy metals like mercury. Mercury may be a naturally occurring element in our environment, but that doesnt mean it’s harmless to the human body. It can contribute to anxiety, cognitive problems, and depression besides helping the yeast. Unfortunately, there are many environmental sources of mercury exposure. We can ingest mercury from contaminated water or from fish that lived in contaminated water. We can breathe it in from air pollution. Vaccines are a source of mercury, as are amalgam dental fillings.

Whats The Link Between Candida And Psoriasis

Several studies suggest that people with psoriasis are more likely to have Candida colonize in their body. Its thought that substances called superantigens and toxins from species of Candida can worsen psoriasis symptoms.

Psoriasis is a genetically linked autoimmune disorder. Most people are diagnosed with this chronic condition between the ages of 12 and 30.

Psoriasis causes skin cells to turn over too quickly. This results in raised red patches and a silvery white buildup on the skin. It can appear as other types of rashes, and it can progress to psoriatic arthritis.

A found that the colonization of Candida in people with psoriasis was significantly greater than the colonization in people without psoriasis.

An earlier study in Mycoses found that people with psoriasis had significantly more occurrences of Candida in their saliva and stool than people without psoriasis.

Both studies suggest that people with psoriasis are more likely to have Candida in their bodies. This may cause worsening psoriasis symptoms. The study in Mycoses suggests that doctors should consider prescribing antifungal medications when treating psoriasis.

Can I Prevent Fungal Acne

Fungal acne unfortunately can reoccur and can take months of persistent treatment to really manage it. However, there are ways to help keep fungal acne or Malassezia folliculitis at bay by simply following these dos & donts.

  • Keep skin dry and clean during and after workout session
  • Use an anti-fungal body wash at least once a week
  • Use products containing salicylic acid or glycolic acids
  • Cycle in anti-fungal shampoos to prevent development of fungal acne
  • Shower twice a day during hot humid days

  • Wear tight clothing that traps the sweat
  • Re-wear sweaty clothes
  • Using products that contain benzoyl peroxide, oils, fatty acids, linoleic acid

Ive recently self-diagnosed myself with fungal acne as I have never had small red closed comedones all over my forehead despite not having many changes in skin care, diet, and lifestyle. I began learning about the causes and discovered fungal acne. Then I started using over the counter anti-fungal products to see if they made a difference and my bumpy skin returned to normal after only a few weeks. I am still continuing with the ketoconazole shampoo and the occasional clotrimazole cream to try to completely eradicate the fungal infection before I add more products into my skincare routine.

Differentiating fungal acne from regular acne can be quite tricky so it’s best to check with a dermatologist if you can. Delaying with the proper treatment could cause fungal acne or acne to worsen.

What does fungal acne look like?

Fungal acne can be eliminated with the right treatment plan. It is important to remember that you need to control the environmental conditions which first lead to the outbreak of fungal acne, in order to prevent your condition from returning. In order to prevent fungal acne and keep these outbreaks in check, you can incorporate using a body wash with a dandruff shampoo such as Nizoral Shampoo or Selsun Blue. Dandruff shampoos contain Ketoconazole, which reduces the amount of yeast growing on the skin. These special shampoos help to maintain a balance between the bacteria and the yeast that live on your skin. It is best to use this Shampoo once or twice a week, when you shower. Simply apply the shampoo to your skin and leave it on for 30 seconds before rinsing it off. By incorporating this shampoo weekly into your skincare regime, this process should help to control and prevent future fungal acne.
