What Is The Extent Of Vitamin Cs Benefit For Acne
Sodium ascorbyl phosphate , a precursor to vitamin C, has been shown to be effective in treating acne by acting both as an antioxidant and as an antimicrobial agent.
One study demonstrated the efficacy of 5% SAP cream used daily, with a majority of subjects showing significant improvement of their acne, with little to no side effects. In this study, 76.9% of patients ranked this creams efficacy as excellent or good, a higher ranking than a prescribed acne treatment of benzoyl peroxide. The results indicate that vitamin C is an effective acne treatment for a wide variety of patients.
Another study found sodium L-ascorbyl-2-phosphate , a derivative of vitamin C, to be an effective acne treatment on its own, providing a statistically significant decrease of both inflammatory and noninflammatory acne lesions.
Skinceuticals Ce Ferulic Acid Serum
One of the best things about this serum is that it is long-lasting since it is effective for up to 72 hours. It contains 15% pure Vitamin C, which is combined with other skin-loving ingredients, which include ferulic acid and Vitamin E. It will neutralize the free radicals present on the skin to avoid the damages they can cause.
Vitamin C Clears Skin Redness
One of the most observable effects of taking Vitamin C when dealing with acne is its ability to reduce skin inflammation and redness. Theres a complex interplay of processes as to how and why this happens.
Namely, when the body is attacked by bacterial infection as the cause of acne, the body reacts by releasing specific chemicals to attack and destroy the bacteria. These chemicals are known as leukotrienes, but theres a catch bacteria arent stupid. They have evolved just enough to sense the release of leukotrienes, and then surround themselves in a protective barrier. This barrier tricks the bodys immune soldiers, the leukotrienes, and redirects them to attack otherwise healthy skin. This causes further inflammation and redness, and it is exactly here that Vitamin C helps. Taken in sufficient doses, Vitamin C makes the immune system less reactive and calmer, so to speak. This makes your body actually fool the bacteria by not responding to its decoys, therefore making for clear, healthier skin.

The 20 Best Vitamin C Serums For Acne
Many people suffer from acne during their teenage years, but your acne problems can persist even into adulthood. Luckily for you, we’ve done the research on the best Vitamin C serums for acne prone skin.
Serums will be a great way to make your complexion brighter and to prevent breakouts. Especially when it is infused with Vitamin C, it can deliver skin-nourishing benefits. If you have acne, be careful of what you choose, making sure that it has ingredients that wont trigger the problem.
Looking for vitamin C serums that will work for your acne-prone skin? Keep on reading and learn from some of our recommendations.
Go On A Product Elimination Diet
If you’re able to pinpoint which product triggered the breakout, just stop using it. It’s unlikely that your skin will “get used to it” if you continue to apply it. Rather, you could cause serious skin damage from inflammation, sensitivity, and deeper acne that may create scars.
If you introduced more than one new product at the same time, and aren’t sure which one caused the breakout, you’ll need to go on a “product elimination diet” like Dr. Sandy Skotnicki recommends in her book, Beyond Soap. Stop using the problem products and switch to a basic, gentle routine until your skin clears up. Then, you can reintroduce one new product at a time. Give your skin at least a week to see how it reacts before adding the second product. This is the only way to determine what is working for your skin .

Your Skin Is Irritated
It’s normal to experience some irritation when starting a new, active skincare product like an acid or retinoid. However, if you’re not using an active product and your skin becomes irritated as well as broken out, it’s a bad sign. This would indicate that your skin is having a reaction, not a purge. Fragrances, essential oils, sulfates and witch hazel are some of the most common skin irritants. The reason they can sometimes break you out is because irritation damages your skin barrier, letting in acne-causing bacteria.
Dont Use Vitamin C With Certain Other Ingredients
Vitamin C is generally pretty safe and well tolerated, but if you have sensitive skin, it might sting a little bitespecially if you use it in the same part of your routine as exfoliating scrubs or acids.
The one ingredient you should steer clear of when using vitamin C is benzoyl peroxide, which can oxidize the vitamin C and, therefore, make it less potent, Dr. Hogan says. You can still use your benzoyl peroxide products, just not in the same part of your routine as the vitamin C. Try using vitamin C in the morning and benzoyl peroxide in the evenings, or use them on different days.

A Closer Look At Antioxidants And Skin Health
The beauty world loves antioxidants, and its easy to see why. Each and every day, your skin experiences oxidative stress caused by free radicals, also known as reactive oxygen species .
These free radicals are unstable molecules that form in the skin due to a number of different factors everything from UV rays to pollution to certain cosmetic ingredients can lead to free radical formation.
Once in your skin, these free radicals cause some serious damage. They attack healthy skin cells, destroying everything from collagen and elastin to cell DNA.
As a result, the more free radicals you have in your skin, the more likely you are to experience wrinkles, dark spots, skin cancer, and other forms of skin damage.
The only way to neutralize these reactive oxygen species is with the use of antioxidants. With this in mind, youd be forgiven for thinking that when it comes to the health of your skin, the more antioxidants the better!
However, new research shows that things may not actually be quite so simple

Most of us are accustomed to taking vitamin C to boost immunity. However, the vitamin, also referred to as ascorbic acid, can seriously benefit your skin in topical form as well. Nazanin Saedi, M.D., Director of Jefferson Laser Surgery and Cosmetic Dermatology Center in Philadelphiaexplains that vitamin C is a key ingredient in many skin care products and is used for a variety of conditions, including acne scarring, fine lines, and uneven skin tone. A good Vitamin C serum can help improve skin complexion, minimize hyperpigmentation, minimize sun damage, and help improve skin texture.
So what should you look for when on the hunt for a vitamin C infused skin treatment? There are two important elements when it comes to an effective product, she says. You need to look for the percentage of vitamin C and also the other ingredients added to the mix. Look for ascorbic acid because it is a stable and effective form of topical vitamin C, she urges. Also, THD ascorbate is a very stable form that is oil-soluble. Some formulations have vitamin E as well and that is another potent antioxidant.

Use Your Vitamin C Products At The Right Point In Your Skin
The right moment to use your product depends on what kind of product it is, Dr. Hogan explains. For serums, you want to apply your vitamin C product to freshly cleansed skin, but before you moisturize. But antioxidant-containing moisturizers are also becoming more common, Dr. Lamb says, and youd want to use those at the end of your routine.

In turn, this will make your skin healthier and younger. There is also Vitamin E, which will destroy the free radicals that can cause skin damage.
Side Effects Of A Vitamin C Serum
Like with any product, there may be side effects. Generally, vitamin C serums are safe, however the risk may be caused by other ingredients in the serums. But it is also important to note that in a study in 2015 published in Clinical, cosmetic and Investigational Dermatology stated that 6% of the studys participants experienced itchiness which was likely caused by the acidic property of the vitamin C. So, if you have sensitive skin I would recommend you consult a dermatologist before investing in a vitamin C serum.
It is also important to note that different vitamin C serums contain a wide variety of vitamin C. They can range from 5% all the way to 30%. According to Sara Hogan, M.D., dermatologist at UCLA Medical Center, she says that this ingredient can have different effects at those concentrations. When it comes to dry or sensitive skin, it is better to go with a lower dose of vitamin C. The reason for this is because as mentioned before, vitamin C is acidic so it is better to start with a lower dose.
Some side effects may include:
- Skin irritation
If any of these side effects are prolonged, go see a dermatologist.

What Can Vitamin C Serum Do
Vitamin C is rich in antioxidant which helps neutralize the free radicals in the body resulting from UV rays or pollution. It is essential to have a balance between antioxidants and free radicals to prevent any oxidative stress. Besides, free radicals can even reduce the ability of the Skin to repair itself and decrease collagen production. Herein antioxidants like Vitamin C can help the body cope with stress and offer multiple benefits, which are as follows.
Protects Against Sun Damage
The suns harmful ultraviolet rays are the biggest enemy of your skin. The sun damages your skin through molecules known as free radicals. According to the composition of these molecules, they lack an electron that they often try to snatch from your skin.
Some effects of sun damage include premature aging, sagging, loss of collagen, dark spots, and hyperpigmentation. Since vitamin C is loaded with antioxidants, it helps protect your healthy skin cells by supplying these free radicals with the electron they need.

What Should You Look For In A Vitamin C Serum
Getting a high level of vitamin C to boost collagenwithout bringing on redness and irritationis the key to vitamin C products, Klein says. Her recommendation is to use a serum that has between 15 and 30 percent vitamin C. Vitamin C should be one of the first ingredients listed on the label, Jaliman adds.
Vitamin C is unstable and will degrade over time, losing its efficacy. Interacting with heat, light, and air speeds up the process, which is why you should look for serums in opaque, airtight bottles.
There are many different derivatives of vitamin C, including ascorbic acid, magnesium ascorbyl phosphate, and sodium ascorbyl phosphateso if one derivative is too irritating, you can always try another. L-ascorbic acid is one popular form of vitamin C, and although its more unstable than other forms of vitamin C, its also less irritating. Look for vitamin C serums that contain ferulic acid, which helps stabilize the vitamin and creates an ideal pH level.
How To Fix The Oxidative Damage Vitamin C Serums Caused
A majority of customers who have come to us with damaged skin, including acne, redness and bacterial issues had one thing in common: The use of vitamin C serums.
If your skin has been inflamed from use of vitamin C serums due to their oxidizing effect, the solution is the following:
First, stop using vitamin C serums.
Give your skin a one week break and then follow an anti-inflammatory skin care regimen.
OUMERE products do not contain any ingredients that would cause oxidation to the skin, which is why our products act as anti-inflammatory agents and have been reported to reduce redness, inflammation and improve the signs of rosacea and other inflammatory skin ailments.
I advise just using the UV-R serum for a couple days because its high concentration of anti-inflammatory extracts will calm you skin down and reverse the oxidative damage caused by the vitamin C serums. After your skin looks like it has improved, follow the following routine:

The Best Forms Of Vitamin C For Skin
Not all vitamin C serums are created equally.
The land of vitamin C is vast. Many different forms exist now, and I’m going to be outlining the most effective and safest ones available.
There’s L-ascorbic acid, and then there’s everything else known as vitamin C derivatives.
There are a plethora of vitamin C derivatives, which are created with a compound added as alternatives to L-ascorbic acid in hopes of preventing its degradation and irritation.
This is because certain forms of vitamin C derivatives are much more stable than L-ascorbic acid.
The downside of derivatives is they’re often less effective than L-ascorbic acid, and they must be converted into L-ascorbic acid in the skin for them to provide similar skin properties.
Im going to be listing the most proven derivatives, and talking about the benefits and side effects of L-ascorbic acid.
For each ingredient listed, Ill also recommend where you can buy them.

Vitamin C Acne Scar Before And After Results
Ive suffered from very severe indented acne scars as well as some discolored acne scarring for years after I had deep cystic acne.
I tried a ton of creams and nothing worked for me for years until I finally worked up the courage to go to the dermatologist and get a professional opinion.
They recommended I do micro-needling as well as apply copper peptides and Vitamin C for skin healing.
I did one professional micro-needling session and saw some improvement. It was then I started researching more, and started at-home micro-needling 1-2X a month with the daily application of copper peptides for acne scars at night and Vitamin C serum for acne scars in the morning.
Every month I would see improvement in my skins indentations as damaged layers came off, and new skin repaired itself underneath.
Ive been treating my skin this way for over a year and my scarring has improved to the point it is either all the way gone in some areas or almost gone in the areas that were the deepest originally.
Here is a view of my forehead, which contained the deepest most severe scarring, before and after my year of at-home micro-needling, Vitamin C and copper peptide treatments:
Here is the side of my face, which had mild to moderate indented scarring as well as discolaration scarring, before and after as well:
