How Do I Know Its Working
When topical vitamin C is effective, you should see a reduction in both the incidence and severity of acne. This is because vitamin C can prevent acne as well as treat it.
Vitamin C does so in two ways. First, by preventing and reducing inflammation of the skin that leads to blocked pores and acne. Second, by acting as an antioxidant to reduce damage caused by free radicals that can lead to and worsen acne.
Vitamin C For Cystic Acne
Cystic acne, the most severe type of acne, can leave you with painful, pus-filled cysts on your face and body. Leaving them alone go away naturally is not an option. Over–the–counter medications, prescription ointments and drugs as well as laser therapies are often used to treat cystic acne. Vitamin C may be an effective way to provide relief for cystic acne suffers.
Adverse Reactions Of Topical Vitamin C
Topical Vit. C is largely safe to use on a daily basis for long durations. It can safely be used in conjunction with other common topical anti-ageing agents such as sunscreens, tretinoin, other antioxidants and alfa hydroxy acids such as glycolic acid. Minor adverse reactions include a yellowish discoloration of the skin, hypopigmented hair and staining of clothes, which occur due to oxidative changes of Vit. C. Once applied, Vit. C cannot be fully washed or wiped off the skin. Rarely, stinging, erythema and dryness are observed after use of topical Vit. C. These can easily be treated using a moisturiser. Care must be taken while applying Vit. C around the eyes.
Urticaria and erythema multiforme, following the use of topical Vit. C, have been documented. The toxic doses of Vit. C that lead to cellular apoptosis under laboratory conditions are 100-200-times the daily recommended dose, giving Vit. C a very high safety profile.

Why Do Acne Scars Form
Acne scars form due to the healing of inflamed acne blemishes. When the acne is small enough, the scars are mild and heal quickly on their own. Other times, the blemish spills into the surrounding tissue and creates deeper scarring.
The two main types of acne scarring is indented and raised. Acne scars are indented when they form due to a tissue deficit, and they are raised when too much collagen is produced during the acne wound repair.
Those with darker skin are more prone to raised scarring, which is more likely to happen to darker skin types as a healing response whether that is to acne or other types of skin injuries.
How Does Vitamin C Help Indented Acne Scars
The Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology study by Al-Niaimi and Chiang goes on to explain how Vitamin C helps in the collagen and skin repair process:
The study found Vitamin Cs role in increasing collagen synthesis, stabilizing collagen fibers, and decreasing collagen degradation to have an anti-aging effect.
Vitamins role in the collagen formation process is why it can help give the skin what it needs to help indented acne scarring heal by forming new smooth collagen, especially when used in conjunction with micro-needling which also kickstarts the skins healing process at a deeper level and opens the skin to receiving healing ingredients.

Vitamin C Acne Scar Before And After Results
Ive suffered from very severe indented acne scars as well as some discolored acne scarring for years after I had deep cystic acne.
I tried a ton of creams and nothing worked for me for years until I finally worked up the courage to go to the dermatologist and get a professional opinion.
They recommended I do micro-needling as well as apply copper peptides and Vitamin C for skin healing.
I did one professional micro-needling session and saw some improvement. It was then I started researching more, and started at-home micro-needling 1-2X a month with the daily application of copper peptides for acne scars at night and Vitamin C serum for acne scars in the morning.
Every month I would see improvement in my skins indentations as damaged layers came off, and new skin repaired itself underneath.
Ive been treating my skin this way for over a year and my scarring has improved to the point it is either all the way gone in some areas or almost gone in the areas that were the deepest originally.
Here is a view of my forehead, which contained the deepest most severe scarring, before and after my year of at-home micro-needling, Vitamin C and copper peptide treatments:
Here is the side of my face, which had mild to moderate indented scarring as well as discolaration scarring, before and after as well:

How To Deal With A Biotin
According to both Lee and Herrmann, the first thing to do is immediately discontinue use of the product that’s causing your skin irritation or breakout. Then, settle into a less-is-more approach and religiously stick to a simple skincare regimen consisting of a gentle cleanser a gentle, oil-free moisturizer and high-quality SPF.
“Keep it basic,” says Lee. Give your skin time to heal because doing more will likely just aggravate the situation.

Does Vitamin C Lighten Your Skin
Vitamin C acts in many ways to help reduce dark spots and other forms of hyperpigmentation. More specifically, this super ingredient helps to treat skin pigmentation, acne blemishes, age spots, skin discoloration and blotchiness. Vitamin C acts preventatively through its antioxidant properties and can reduce the harsh rays your skin is forced to deal with when enjoying the sunshine! On its own, Vitamin C will work to lighten your skin. However, the improvements are drastic when Vitamin C serums are introduced with other key ingredients such as hyaluronic acid. With the combined anti-aging benefits of Hyaluronic Acid and the collagen growth inducing powers of Vitamin C, Kiehl’s Vitamin C Serums rank among the best for skincare.
Skinceuticals Phloretin Cf Serum
Campbell called SkinCeuticals “the gold standard” of topical vitamin C serums. She recommended the Phloretin CF serum for those with oily skin while the C E Ferulic serum is the “best option for all skin types,” especially those with dry and combination skin. She noted both serums are “effective” antioxidant treatments that “help prevent and treat oxidative stress. Phloretin CF serum received a 4.8-star average rating from more than 540 reviews on Dermstore.

What My Dermatologist Says:
“I have had so many patients mention this,” says board-certified dermatologist Jennifer Herrmann. “Although biotin deficiency can cause skin rashes, thin hair, and brittle nails, consuming more or an excess without a deficiency doesnât offer benefits of fewer rashes, thicker hair, or firmer nails when we look at quality scientific studies. Interestingly, biotin shares an absorption receptor in the gut with pantothenic acid. Taking too much of either biotin or pantothenic acid can cause a deficiency in the other as absorption receptors are all bound by whatever vitamin is in excess. Because pantothenic acid is believed to be important for healthy functioning of the skinâs barrier, in theory, a deficiency of this acid may lead to skin barrier disruption which may impact acne/inflammation.”
According to Herrmann, more studies need to be performed to better understand this connection, but this is one theorized explanation for why biotin can cause acne in certain cases.
How Does Vitamin C Help Pigmented Acne Scars
The Al-Niami and Chiang study found that Vitamin C decreases melanin formation, thereby reducing pigmentation. Vitamin C is the primary replenisher of vitamin E and works synergistically with vitamin E in the protection against oxidative damage.
The study concluded by saying that the topical application of Vitamin C helps the skin with a variety of anti-aging, anti-pigmentation and sun-protective properties.
The Pullar, Carr, Vissers study goes into detail to explain how Vitamin C derivatives work to treat skin hyperpigmentation such as the hyperpigmentation that occurs from certain types of acne scarring, Vitamin C derivatives, including the magnesium phosophate ascorbyl derivative, have been shown to decrease melanin synthesis both in cultured melanocytes and in vivo.
The decrease in melanin synthesis has an ability to interfere with the action of tyrosinase, the rate-limiting enzyme in melanogenesis.
Agents that decrease melanogenesis are used to treat skin hyperpigmentation in conditions such as melisma or age spots.
In simple terms, Vitamin C can interfere with an enzyme called tyrosinase which is responsible for the production of melanin, a natural skin pigment.
This process is what allows Vitamin C to help brighten skin dark spots and hyperpigmentation spots caused by acne scarring.

What is vitamin C?
Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant found in citrus fruits and leafy vegetables. Vitamin C is an important nutrient for healthy skin, bones, teeth and blood vessels. Vitamin C also goes by the name ascorbic acid and is commonly found in skincare products because it can help reduce the appearance of wrinkles & discoloration.
The two most common forms of Vitamin C are Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate and L-Ascorbic Acid.
What is vitamin C best for?
Vitamin C is an important component of a great skincare routine. This nutrient helps even out skin tone and reduce discoloration. Vitamin C as an antioxidant also protects skin from the negative consequences of pollution on our skin, such as wrinkles and dark spots. Vitamin C also acts as a hydration barrier, keeping your skin viable and pliable.
Using vitamin C for dark spots, age spots and post acne hyperpigmentation
Vitamin C is known to help reduce discoloration in the skin. Studies have shown that using vitamin C on hyperpigmented skin can reduce discoloration by up to 60% in time. As a naturally occurring antioxidant, vitamin C inhibits certain steps of melanin formation, therefore stopping hyperpigmentation from occurring at a cellular level.
What are the drawbacks to using vitamin C?
Vitamin C requires a low pH to be effective so it may be too irritating for sensitive skin.
First Off What Is Vitamin C
As far as your skin is concerned, vitamin C is “a potent antioxidant that can neutralize free radicals,” explains board-certified dermatologist Patricia Wexler. “Because of its antioxidant properties, vitamin C aids in your skin’s natural regeneration process, which helps your body repair damaged skin cells.”
So, in the same way that consuming antioxidant-rich foods aids your body in fighting off free radicals, topical antioxidants do the same for your skin by helping to offset daily aggressors like UV damage and exposure to air pollution. Quick refresher course on antioxidants: They prevent or reduce damage to our cells by neutralizing the production of highly reactive molecules called free radicals. In other words, antioxidants help keep our body and our skin cells healthy.
This free-radical-fighting power isn’t just important for helping to keep signs of premature aging at bay. In neutralizing these free radicals, vitamin C may also help protect skin from precancerous changes caused by UV exposure, Joshua Zeichner, the director of cosmetic and clinical research at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, previously told Allure.

How To Use A Vitamin C Serum For Oily Acne
Theres no proof that Vitamin C causes acne. In fact, it may even help treat it faster!
And yet, many of my clients with oily, acne-prone skin complain their acne got worse after introducing a Vitamin C serum into their skincare routine.
Science cant explain why. But I dont believe in waiting around doing nothing while science catches up with real skin problems.
Instead, lets find a way to make Vitamin C safe for you, too. Enter Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate .
Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate is a derivative of Vitamin C . When it sinks into your skin, enzymes come along to convert it into L-Ascorbic Acid.
A study published in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science shows that Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate can treat acne vulgaris. How?
Acne is caused by two major factors:
- Bacteria: Proprionibacterium Acnes, or P.Acnes for short
- Lipid oxidation: when your sebum oxidises, your skin becomes inflamed
Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate deals with both. 1% of SAP reduces the amount of P.Acnes on your skin, while 5% prevents lipid oxidation in the first place.

What Can Vitamin C Serum Do
Vitamin C is rich in antioxidant which helps neutralize the free radicals in the body resulting from UV rays or pollution. It is essential to have a balance between antioxidants and free radicals to prevent any oxidative stress. Besides, free radicals can even reduce the ability of the Skin to repair itself and decrease collagen production. Herein antioxidants like Vitamin C can help the body cope with stress and offer multiple benefits, which are as follows.
Vitamin C Clears Skin Redness
One of the most observable effects of taking Vitamin C when dealing with acne is its ability to reduce skin inflammation and redness. Theres a complex interplay of processes as to how and why this happens.
Namely, when the body is attacked by bacterial infection as the cause of acne, the body reacts by releasing specific chemicals to attack and destroy the bacteria. These chemicals are known as leukotrienes, but theres a catch – bacteria arent stupid. They have evolved just enough to sense the release of leukotrienes, and then surround themselves in a protective barrier. This barrier tricks the bodys immune soldiers, the leukotrienes, and redirects them to attack otherwise healthy skin. This causes further inflammation and redness, and it is exactly here that Vitamin C helps. Taken in sufficient doses, Vitamin C makes the immune system less reactive and calmer, so to speak. This makes your body actually fool the bacteria by not responding to its decoys, therefore making for clear, healthier skin.
