Summary Adapalene Gel For Acne Scars
Pitted acne scars are a common skin concern caused by the loss of collagen when inflammatory acne heals. Adapalene gel can help improve acne scars by boosting collagen production and increasing skin cell turnover, as well as by preventing inflammation and further acne scarring.
However, adapalene gel is not a quick fix for acne scars and it is likely to be at least six months before any improvements are seen.

Why Does Acne Leave Scars
Acne is an inflammatory skin condition that affects up to 80% of 18-30-year-olds and 5% of people over 30 years-of-age , 90% of whom experience some degree of acne scarring.
Acne scars are caused by an imbalance in certain enzymes that regulate the amount of collagen produced during the healing of inflammatory acne. This leads to either too much or too little collagen being produced.
When too much collagen is produced it causes raised acne scars which are known as hypertrophic scars, however, when too little collagen is produced it causes pitted acne scars which are known as atrophic scars.
In 80-90% of cases, acne scars are atrophic and this is where adapalene gel for acne scars comes in.

Types Of Acne Scarring
To help you identify which type of acne scar you might be dealing with, we also put together a quick at-a-glance view of common acne scars. While they all vary in appearance, Hartman highlighted these names are just descriptors for the different shapes of acne scars. Theyre all the same thing and just come about from different severities of acne breakouts and lesions, he said.

How Fast Can Acne Scars Go Away
It usually takes 3-6 months for the marks to disappear. However, if you have a scar, youre dealing with permanent skin damage that needs treatment in order to disappear. An acne scar changes the texture of the skin. If acne has left indentations, or raised spots, the damage has occurred at a deeper level in the skin.
Clogging Pores With Excess Oil
Like bacteria, oil doesnt inherently cause acne. In fact, our skin needs a thin layer of oil to protect itself from irritants. However, too much oil can cause bad skin because it can easily clog pores.
Excess oil can be produced for a variety of reasons, but one of the most common is hormonal changes. When typical hormone levels fluctuate, as they do during the teenage years , those changes can trigger an increase in oil production. Once hormone levels even out, excess oil typically becomes less of an issue, but it can still cause acne for someone with an oily skin type, or if the skin is irritated.
Most people with acne fall into one of three basic categories of skin types: dry, combination, or oily. Surprisingly, all three of these skin types can be affected by excess oil. Unsurprisingly, oily skin can produce too much oil, which then combines with dead skin cells to clog pores, or combines with bacteria to create pimples.

Give Your Skin A Deep Exfoliating Clean With Salicylic Acid
Salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy acid that is lipophilic, which means it likes to mingle with oils. This property allows it to penetrate deep into pores and clean them out. Alpha hydroxy acids, like glycolic and lactic acids, are hydrophilic, so they dont penetrate pores as well, but they are effective at exfoliating dead skin and preventing pores from clogging. Camp suggests cleansing with this gentle face cleanser by CeraVe, which contains salicylic acid and can be used to treat acne on the face, shoulders, and back.

How To Use Retinoid Products Every Day
Normally, low-concentration adapalene is safe for use in all skin types. Here are the steps on how and when to use Differin for acne, as advised by the manufacturers:
- After washing with a non-medicated soap, pat dry your face. Then apply a thin layer of Differin gel to the affected area every evening. Adapalene is safe to use once every day, but no more. This includes lower concentrations such as adapalene gel 0.1%. Increased use doesnt automatically mean increased efficacy, and it may be harmful.
- Avoid application to the skin around the eyes and lips , and on the inside of your mouth and nose.
- Dont apply to sunburnt skin.
- Be careful when using any adapalene product with other acne treatments.
- A mild sensation of warmth or slight stinging may occur shortly after application, but this should be transient.
- Avoid direct sunlight during the day and use an SPF 30 or higher sunblock when going out. Retinoid products can make the skin more sensitive to harmful UV rays .
- Apply a good moisturizer if the affected area gets dry.
- It may take up to 12 weeks for the product to work, but if no significant improvement is noticed by then, you should reevaluate the use of Differin.
The manufacturers also advise that you should stop using the product and consult with a doctor or dermatologist immediately, if you find that any side effect persists or worsens.

So If You Dont Have Acne Can You Still Use Differin
Theres nothing that says I cant. There are only one or two studies that show that adapalene is effective for anti-aging as of this posting. Thats mostly because all other studies only concentrated on adapalenes effect on acne. Any evidence that adapalene works for anti-aging was purely coincidental.
Even though Im in my mid-40s, I still get a couple of spots here and there. When I do, I want them gone. However, thats not my primary goal for using Differin. I want to use Differin for its skin smoothing and re-texturing properties.
Dont You Know Differin Is For Acne Not Anti
Yes, I know. Differin is the first new over-the-counter acne medicine available in over 30 years. The active ingredient, adapalene, is a retinol and is related to tretinoin . The main difference is that adapalene is not as harsh on the skin as tretinoin, and apparently works with different receptors in the skin than tretinoin.
However, adapalene does still do some of the same things that tretinion can do, like smooth and re-texture the skin. Of course, what adapalene does best is get rid of acne.

What Causes Acne Scarring
According to Dr. Bae, acne scarring happens when there’s an increase of inflammation and bacteria on your skin and the tissue underneath it, along with atypical formation of keratin on the outermost layers of your skin and overproduction of a naturally occurring, oily substance called sebum that can clog your pores. The three most common types of acne scarring include ice pick , rolling and boxcar scars.
A few other factors can increase your risk of acne scars, including a family history of scarring and acne cysts or nodules or delaying medical treatment for severe acne. Picking or squeezing your pimples during breakouts could also contribute to long-term scarring.
Dr. Bae also mentioned that patients often confuse acne scarring with dyspigmentation. Dyspigmentation is the pigmentation associated with previous acne and can look like red, pink or brown spots on your skin. “The brown dyspigmentation is technically not scarring,” says Dr. Bae, “so it’s important to make this distinction for clear communication about treatment.”

In some cases, a doctor or dermatologist may suggest a chemical peel or microdermabrasion to help improve the appearance of scarred areas. These milder treatments can be done right in the office. For serious scarring from previous bouts with acne, several types of treatment can help: Laser resurfacing.
Consider A Subcision Procedure To Break Up Scars
Performed in-office by a dermatologist, a subcision procedure involves breaking up the cord of scar tissue responsible for tethering the skin down and making a depression . During this procedure, a needle is inserted into the skin to break the collagen cord. Camp warns it can be associated with bruising, though.

Adapalene Gel For Acne Scars: The Research
Recent research has demonstrated that 0.3% adapalene gel can improve pitted acne scars after 24-weeks of use. In this study, adapalene was applied once a day for the first 4 weeks, then twice a day for the following 20 weeks, which differs to the usual recommended use of once-daily use.
Another clinical study investigated a combination of 0.3% adapalene gel and 2.5% benzoyl peroxide for the treatment of acne scars. After the 24-week study period, patients experienced a 30% reduction in the number of pitted acne scars.
Lower concentrations of adapalene gel are effective at preventing further acne scarring but do not appear to have much effect over existing acne scars after 24 weeks of use. However, lower concentrations tend to take longer to work and it is unclear whether any benefit would have been seen with a longer study period.
With all of these studies, adapalene gel was well-tolerated with patients experiencing little irritation throughout the study period.

How To Tell If You’re Suffering A Reaction
Because of the Differin purge causing the acne to return, it can be difficult for a Differin user to tell when they’re suffering an actual reaction to the treatment. There are four situations in which you should have your symptoms inspected by a medical professional:
- You break out in new areas. The Differin purge will only bring existing blockages to the surface, not create new ones.
- The acne gets significantly worse than ever before. A resurgence of your acne shouldn’t be markedly worse than it was before you began treatment.
- Major side effects become apparent. Aside from your original acne, the development of pain or swelling on the application area, or irritation, redness, itching or swelling of the eyelids.
- You see no improvement after 2 months. A purge shouldn’t pass 2 weeks, so if there are zero improvements after 8 weeks, you should discuss other options with your doctor.
If we’ve prescribed you Differin and you’ve found yourself in such a situation, let us know. We’ll take a close look at your symptoms and find a better alternative.

How Do You Plan On Using Differin For Anti
As I mentioned above, Im starting out using Differin every other night. Adapalene may be gentle, but its still a powerful retinoid. So far, Ive been using this for about a month.
On the nights I use the Differin gel, I double cleanse to remove all my makeup and get my skin really clean. After cleansing, I pat my skin dry and use a gentle, hydrating toner. Then I smooth on a light moisturizer. I let that sink in for a few minutes, then I apply the Differin gel all over my face, concentrating on areas that have large pores, texture, and wrinkles. I use slightly more than the recommended pea-size dollop, but I am also putting it on my neck and chest. I then let the Differin gel sink into my skin for a few minutes, and after that I follow up with a heavier night moisturizer.
How To Use Differin Gel
Prior to applying Differin to the skin, you should wash your face with a mild and non-irritating cleanser. After that, you can apply a thin layer of Differin Gel to dry skin and follow up with a moisturizer.
You shouldnt use Differin Gel more than once per day, but it can be applied in the morning or at night. If you decide to integrate it into your morning skin care routine, allow it to dry before applying SPF. You should also try to apply it at the same time every day.

How Is Differin Affected By The Sun
Avoid exposure to sunlight, sunlamps or sunbeds while using this medication, as it increases your skin’s sensitivity to UV light. If exposure to sunlight cannot be avoided, use sunscreens or protective clothing over treated skin.
If your skin is sunburnt, you should not use this medication until your skin has fully recovered. Severe irritation may result.
Differin Gel And Cystic Acne
Cysts are primarily caused by P. acnes bacteria, and retinoids are not bactericidal. Thats the purview of acne treatments such as benzoyl peroxide and tea tree oil, but these can be too abrasive with adapalene. Read on for more about this .
Yet, thats not to say that adapalene cant play a role in limiting the bacterial spread.
Without intervention, excessively high skin cell turnover can help the infection to spread faster and further. So it makes sense to reason that, with the help of Differin gel or another topical retinoid, these skin cells can be replaced more quickly. In this way, a retinoid product could potentially be helpful in halting the spread of the pathogen, especially if P. acnes is limited to a small area. It may even keep an infected follicle from forming a cyst.

When Should I Stop Using Differin Gel
Full improvement should be seen within 12 weeks, especially if you use the medicine every day. You should not stop using adapalene if your acne seems worse at first, unless irritation or other symptoms become severe. Check with your doctor if your acne does not improve within 8 to 12 weeks.
