Feb. 8, 2011 — What your mother always told you may be true after all: Chocolate may make acne worse, a small preliminary study suggests.
Young men who ate up to 8 ounces of chocolate saw their average number of pimples skyrocket from fewer than four to as many as 70.
And the more chocolate they ate, the more they broke out — a finding that further supports the idea that the worsening of acne was due to eating the chocolate, says study researcher Samantha Block, a second-year medical student at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.
Still, the study doesn’t prove cause and effect.

“What I tell patients with acne is that for some, chocolate plays a role, and for others it does not,” he says. It can be a little tricky figuring out if chocolate is causing you to break out as pimples may not appear until hours or days after eating the candy.
The researchers are now planning a study of 28 people with acne in which some will be offered up to 6 ounces of pure chocolate and others will be given no chocolate at all.

It was thought that acne sufferers had an impaired tolerance of glucose, the sugar which our bodies convert carbohydrates into for distribution in the bloodstream. Popular textbooks of the 1940s and 1950s counselled against sugary food and drink – including chocolate – as part of acne treatment.
But a very influential 1969 study by JE Fulton and his colleagues G Plewig and AM Klingman appeared to scotch any association between chocolate and acne.

Milk And Dairy Products
“One of the other myths, which perhaps has a grain of truth behind it, is milk and dairy products,” Miller told HuffPost Australia.
While there has been some research conducted to support this claim, other research cannot confirm their findings.
“All the research has come from one centre in the U.S. so you’ve always got to be a bit sceptical. But it seems that the strongest association is in skim milk products in females.
“The thought behind this is, in the process of skimming the milk you get a concentration of the hormone ingredients in the milk, and that may be contributing to the acne.”
Tying in with the milk claim, whey protein supplements — a by-product of cheese production — could cause an issue, according to Miller.
“The convention is to advise people to use soy-based protein supplements, rather than whey. I’ve personally not been able to find scientific evidence to back that up, however,” he said.
Fodmaps Link Between Chocolate And Acne
Its not exactly clear why cocoa causes, or I should say aggravates acne. My own experience shows it may have something to do with gut health. For the past few months Ive been going to the gym actively and taking whey protein shakes. I often mix whey protein and cocoa powder into a green smoothie. For the past 6 weeks my skin has been worse than normally and Ive had mild constipation. I suspect its due to cocoa powder as I have no problems with whey protein itself.
Cocoa powder has moderately high amounts of FODMAPs, and can cause gut problems and in people with FODMAP intolerance. Other studies show people with acne have much higher rates of gut problems than people with clear skin. This may explain the connection between cocoa and acne, but we have to wait for further research to confirm it.
Earlier I also wrote about a study that showed chocolate aggravates the immune response against acne bacteria. This causes more inflammation at the skin and can also aggravate acne.

Does Cocoa Powder Cause Acne
So maybe eating that chocolate bar wont lead to a breakout over the weekend. So what about cocoa powder? After all, cocoa powder is in chocolate, so could that be the culprit? Again, the answer isnt that black-and-white. For men with acne-prone skin, one study showed that regularly eating 99% dark chocolate led to an increase in acne. However, its worth noting that they already had regular acne breakouts prior to this.
However, most studies that have so far focused on just cocoa powder and its possible link to acne have had relatively small sample sizes, increasing the likelihood of errors. This means that, just as with chocolate, more studies need to be done to come to a conclusive answer.
Foods That Cause Acne
It’s no surprise that a healthy diet has a positive impact on your entire body, but don’t forget that includes your skin. When it comes to the role diet plays in acne, the old adage “you are what you eat” holds especially true. “In the last decade there’s been a lot of convincing scientific research confirming a link between what you eat and how your skin behaves,” explains Whitney Bowe, M.D., associate clinical professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai Medical Center.
While Dr. Bowe is quick to note that dietary changes alone won’t clear up your skin, diet is an essential component in a holistic acne treatment plan, particularly if topicals alone don’t seem to be doing the trick. Just be patient: “It takes one to three months for the effects of any changes in your diet to show up on your skin,” she says.
