These three oral contraceptives have been approved for treating moderate acne in women who:
- Are at least age 14 or 15
- Have already started menstruating
- Need contraception
In actual practice, doctors prescribe birth control for the full spectrum of acne, from mild to severe.
In addition, doctors may prescribe additional birth control products for acne. For example, the oral contraceptives Yasmin and Alesse have both been clinically shown to improve acne. But neither one has been approved by the FDA for this use.
If youre already taking an oral contraceptive thats working well in treating acne, theres no need to switch brands. But if you are taking birth control pills for acne for the first time, its best to use one of the three types now approved for acne treatment.
You may need to take an oral contraceptive for a few months before your skin starts to clear. And an initial flare-up of acne is common when a woman first starts taking birth control pills.
Birth control pills work on only one acne-related factor excess sebum. Doctors often prescribe other forms of acne treatment topical medications or antibiotics to be used alongside them for best results in clearing the skin.
If you have severe acne along with irregular periods, excess facial hair, or obesity, your doctor may do further testing for a medical condition called polycystic ovary syndrome or other hormonal condition.

Because of the Differin purge causing the acne to return, it can be difficult for a Differin user to tell when they’re suffering an actual reaction to the treatment. There are four situations in which you should have your symptoms inspected by a medical professional:
- You break out in new areas. The Differin purge will only bring existing blockages to the surface, not create new ones.
- The acne gets significantly worse than ever before. A resurgence of your acne shouldn’t be markedly worse than it was before you began treatment.
- Major side effects become apparent. Aside from your original acne, the development of pain or swelling on the application area, or irritation, redness, itching or swelling of the eyelids.

How Long Does It Take For Skin To Purge
Unfortunately, purging can be a lengthy process and it can take up to three or so months before results start to show, especially if the treatment is an acne medicated treatment. “If you have just started a new treatment for your spots and get a bit of a breakout to start off with, be patient as it is likely to just be a blip and should settle down once the benefits of the treatment have had a chance to kick in”, says Dr Justine.
“If things arent heading in the right direction after a few weeks of starting a treatment, or if they are continuing to get worse, it is a good idea to consult a dermatologist to ensure that the choice of treatment is still appropriate.” And if you are experiencing something more severe, such as cysts, scars or feeling unwell, it is important to seek more urgent attention as your treatment may need to be adjusted sooner.
