I grew up having nearly perfect skin. Dont get me wrong, I got occasional pimples but they were nothing my trusty couldnt handle.

When I was around 20, my skin turned on me and erupted with cystic acneIm talking big, deep, painful, recurring cysts. As someone who has always been diligent about skincare, I freaked out, naturally. Then I called my dermatologist, who recommended I get cortisone shots for my acne.

Is A Cortisone Shot Right For Me

If you have a pimple that you cant treat at home, is painful, or youre prone to scarring, the cortisone shot may be a good choice for you. Cortisone acne injections are ideal for flattening, softening, and sinking deep cysts or nodules.

Cortisone shots are only effective for pimples when you cantpop them. Acne spots that are appropriate for a cortisone shot treatment appear as a bump and are cystic in nature. Unless cortisone is injected, you would typically have to wait several days to weeks for these bumps to shrink on their own.

What Is A Skin Graft

If a healthy flap of skin cannot be used during surgery, the surgeon may opt to do a skin graft. During this procedure, the surgeon detaches a section of skin completely from one part of the body and uses it to cover the affected area.

A skin graft requires special techniques that will encourage new blood vessels and soft tissue to form again.

How Is Scabies Treated

After exposure, it can take up to six weeks for scabies symptoms to appear. The most common sites on the body for scabies to appear include the:

• Wrist
• Waist
• Buttocks

To treat scabies, the infestation must be removed using prescription ointments, creams and lotions. In some cases, your doctor may recommend an oral medication. In order for the medication to work, you will likely need to put it on the affected area at night when the mites are most active. The medication can be washed off the next morning.

To help with some of the other symptoms that are associated with scabies, your doctor may recommend that you take additional medication such as an antihistamine, antibiotic or steroid cream.

Its important to note that scabies symptoms often appear worse before they get better however, you should notice less itching after the first week of treatment. If your symptoms havent gone away after four weeks of treatment, you should revisit your doctor.

Minor Surgical Treatments That Urgent Care Centers Offer

1. Burn Treatment

• First-degree burn.Known as a superficial burn, this burn impacts only the epidermis, or outer layer of skin.
• Second-degree burn.Known as a partial thickness burn, this type of burn affects both the epidermis and the dermis, or the outer two layers of skin.
• Third-degree burn.Know as a full thickness burn, this type of burn destroys the epidermis and the dermis and may also affect the subcutaneous tissue, or innermost layer of skin.
• Fourth-degree burn.This type of burn destroys nerve endings and affects every layer of skin, sometimes even the muscle and bone.

2. Cyst Removal

• Epidermoid.These slow-growing cysts usually under the skin on the face, neck, and back are from a buildup of a type of protein called keratin.
• Sebaceous.These slow-growing cysts are usually on the torso, neck, or face and can be become very large and painful.
• Ganglion.This fluid-filled lump of tissue is usually on the hands, feet, wrists, and ankles.
• Chalazia.A small painless lump on the upper or lower eyelid is from a blocked oil gland.

Can You Prevent Scarring

Unfortunately, scarring is an important part of the healing process.

When you are caring for your wound, its important that you keep it clean by using soap and water. Do not use hydrogen peroxide as this can further damage the skin and cause the scar to worsen.

Wounds that are deep or large may need stitches to ensure that the skin heals properly and minimizes scarring.

If you need surgery, your surgeon can help to minimize the appearance of a scar by planning the excision. This allows the scar to stay camouflaged by hiding it near other anatomical structures or within wrinkle lines.

As long as the wound doesnt become infected, the appearance of the scar should be minimal.

Heres What Happened After My Cortisone Shot

The cortisone shot and pimple-draining procedure collapsed the cyst within hours and restored my confidencebut back home in Boston, a week later, I was shocked to find a pretty severe indentation on my chin where my cyst had been injected. Panicked, I began Googling everything there was to know about cortisone shots for acne and their side effects. The term ice pick scar kept coming up, and I worried Id be left with this minor gouge for eternity.

In most urgent care settings, the doctor will be able to diagnose a skin infection and may prescribe antibiotics and creams to treat the infection. Often, the patient is then referred to a dermatologist for follow-up care. It may be preferable to see a dermatologist directly, eliminating a long wait in an ER or urgent care medical practice. Even patients who go to their primary care physician may be immediately referred to a dermatologist.

Not all skin problems can be evaluated in an emergency room or urgent care facility. Generally, a trip to the ER or urgent care will not be necessary when you can schedule an appointment with a board-certified doctor dermatologist. So, how do we define a serious skin infection?

For cysts that are very swollen or painful, or don’t seem to be healing on their own, steroid shots are quick fixes for those embarrassing blemishes. But these injections are really meant for emergency use, Ciraldo says, not as part of your regular acne treatment plan.

“These are best for people who have just one or two lesions that are much more advanced than the rest of their acne,” she cautions. “For people who have more widespread cystic and inflamed acne lesions, a more systemic or global therapy is necessary.”

Heres What To Know Before You Go

This short procedure can easily and quickly improve your acne, but there are some caveats and risks associated with it.

First off, not every pimple is a candidate for cortisone. Its not meant to be a regular staple in your skin-care routine, but rather an occasional treatment for painful lesions that might lead to a scar, Dr. Bhutani explains. Sometimes, if you have an event coming up, your dermatologist may still treat you for something thats less severe, but you need to have that conversation with dermatologist, she says.

Your dermatologist will also need to be careful not to inject too much cortisone into a single spot, even if your pimple is truly out of control. There is a limit to how much steroid we can inject into the skin, Dr. Bhutani says. If more than the limit is injected, it could be absorbed into the bloodstream, which might result in systemic effects from the steroid.

The other issue is that if too much cortisone is injected into one spot, or if too high a concentration of medication is used, your pimple could shrink too much, leaving a depression in the skin. Although these depressions are usually temporary, Dr. Massick says, they can still last a while . If you get a depression after a cortisone shot, Dr. Massick says that injecting normal saline into the dent might reverse itbut its better to take precautions beforehand.

When you are sick, injured and in pain, and seeing your primary physician right away is not an option, feel hopeful to know there are other alternatives. Despite what youve likely read, cortisone shots do not get rid of your pimple overnight, or even within a day or two. In general, cortisone shots will cut your acnes lifespan in half, usually over the course of 4-7 days .

So, for example, if your cystic zit tends to throb for a week before hardening and slowly healing over the next three weeks, a cortisone shot can cut that timeline in halfbringing your total zit time down from four weeks to two weeks. And the less time your skin spends inflamed, the less intense the hyperpigmentation and scarring will be. For someone like me, whose skin is left with a year-long red mark after every single zit, thats a huge plus.

What Increases Your Risk

The tendency to develop acne runs in families. You are more likely to develop severe acne if your parents had severe acne.

The risk of developing acne is highest during the teenage and young adult years. These are the years when hormones such as testosterone are increasing. Women who are at the age ofmenstruation also are more likely to develop acne. Many women have acne flare-ups in the days just before their menstrual periods.

Acne can be irritated or made worse by:

• Wearing straps or other tight-fitting items that rub against the skin , as well as using equipment that rubs against the body . Helmets, bra straps, headbands, and turtleneck sweaters also may cause acne to get worse.
• Using skin and hair care products that contain irritating substances.
• Washing the face too often or scrubbing the face too hard. Using harsh soaps or very hot water can also cause acne to get worse.

• Having hair hanging in the face, which can cause the skin to be oilier.

Which Shots Are Used For Knee Arthritis

The most common shot for arthritis knee pain is a steroid shot. It’s also called a cortisone or corticosteroid shot. Arthritis pain is caused by inflamed tissue, and the steroid shot can help to reduce the inflammation.

Steroid shots can give quick pain relief. For some people, the relief lasts only a few weeks. Others get relief for 6 months or longer. And for some people, these shots don’t help at all.
