Prenatal vitamins typically contain folic acid , calcium, iron, iodine, zinc, and vitamins A, E, and C. The ingredients in prenatal vitamins vary depending on the product. Your doctor will recommend the right type of prenatal vitamin or prenatal supplement based on your specific needs.

  • Iron: Iron is an important nutrient for the development of the placenta and fetus. Iron also is important for increasing the number of red blood cells in the mother. Pregnant women should take about 30 mg/day of iron during pregnancy to prevent iron deficiency anemia.
  • Calcium and vitamin D: Calcium and vitamin D are used for developing your babys skeleton. The recommended amount of calcium is 1000 to 1300 mg per day for pregnant or lactating women.
  • Folic acid: Folic acid is used in the development of your babys spinal cord and brain. The CDC recommends that all women of childbearing age consume 0.4 mg of folic acid daily.
  • Zinc: Zinc helps your baby develop normally and it may increase birth weight. Zinc deficiency may cause slow growth.
  • Iodine: Iodine is needed for proper development and functioning of the thyroid gland. Iron deficiency can cause hypothyroidism in the mother or baby. Women who pregnant or breastfeeding should take of 220 to 290 mcg of iodine daily.
  • Vitamin A: Vitamin A is needed for proper eye development. Vitamin A deficiency can lead to night blindness. Pregnant women should take 770 mcg per day of vitamin A.
  • Can You Take Prenatal Vitamins If Youre Not Pregnant

One of the top questions on a patients mind is: Can you take prenatal vitamins if youre not pregnant?

If youre planning to get pregnant you can start taking folic acid supplements. Half of the United States pregnancies are unplanned, so prenatals can protect your pregnancy from complications, as some defects can appear in the early stages of the pregnancy.

However, if you dont want to get pregnant, its best to follow a healthy diet and get the nutrients you need from food. Prenatals can cause adverse effects if you take more than you need to.

Most of these vitamins are water soluble, meaning you’ll just pee out any excess, Dr. Ruiz says. There is one exception to this rule, however: iron, which can be toxic in large doses.

Pregnant women need 30 to 60 milligrams of iron each day, according to the guidelines from the World Health Organization . Most prenatal vitamins come fortified with extra iron, so as long as you’re sticking to what’s in your daily prenatal , you’ll be fine, Dr. Ruiz says.

    Do Prenatal Vitamins Cause Acne

Acne during pregnancy is a common problem due to an increase or imbalance of certain hormones. Although some people may blame prenatal vitamins as the cause of their acne, this idea is purely a myth and there is no scientific evidence to support the claim. Prenatal vitamins are nothing more than regular daily multivitamins in slightly higher than normal doses and will not affect cause breakouts.

What Are The Benefits Of Prenatal Vitamins

Prenatal multivitamins differ from the regular multivitamins you may be taking in that they have higher doses of vitamins and minerals geared specifically toward a babys growth.

They contain certain nutrients such as iron, calcium, and folic acid that are crucial for fetal development, and their intake requirements increase during pregnancy, saysCarielle Nikkel, MS, RDN, the director of nutrition at Persona. Thats why its so important to supplement with a high-quality prenatal if you are pregnant or trying to become pregnant.

Prenatal vitamins are no substitute for a healthy diet, however, stresses Adeeti Gupta, MD, a board certified OB-GYN. I still recommend a regular balanced diet with the right proportions of protein, fat, carbohydrate intake, and continuing a daily exercise regimen and drinking water, she says.

Another thing to note: Prenatal vitamins do not increase fertility in womenthey simply aid in better outcomes for the baby and help keep the mother healthy during pregnancy.

    Acne Related To Dietary Supplements

When treating patients with acne, obtaining an accurate medication history is recommended to determine if these therapies are potential causes of acne. In addition to certain prescription medications, certain dietary supplements have also been linked to acne. A number of case reports and case series have described the onset of acne with certain dietary supplements, explains Rajani Katta, MD. Dietary supplement use is common in the United States, with multiple surveys showing that about half of American adults consume some type of supplement. Unfortunately, many patients are unaware these supplements are not FDA approved. Furthermore, side effects may be underreported because there are no post-marketing surveillance programs required for dietary supplements.

Dr. Katta and colleagues have published a review article in the Dermatology Online Journal that described clinical findings reported in the literature on supplement-induced acne. Our goal was to collect information on which dietary supplements have been reported as a cause of acne, Dr. Katta says. Specifically, the authors reviewed dietary supplements containing vitamins B6 and B12, iodine, and whey protein as well as muscle building supplements that may potentially be contaminated with anabolic-androgenic steroids . The review also presented data on specific mechanisms of actionknown or hypothesizedfor each supplement.

Unexpected Beauty Benefits Of Prenatal Vitamins

You often hear that pregnant women have a glow about them. While this isnt a scientific term, several physical and lifestyle changes that are common among pregnant women may contribute to a newfound sparkle or enhanced beauty thats perceived by others.

For starters, a womans blood volume increases by nearly 50% during pregnancy.1 This can give the skin a warm, flushed appearance. There are also hormones released in the body during pregnancy that cause increased oil production in the skin. These same hormones may also be responsible for thicker, faster-growing hair that many women report during pregnancy.

There may be other reasons a woman gains a healthy glow. Many women who are pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant eliminate toxins from their lives, whether by cleaner eating or cutting out smoking and alcohol. By detoxifying and eating healthier, women are naturally supporting the function of their organs, including the skin. Women who are pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant also should take daily prenatal supplements. These contain vitamins and minerals that have unexpected beauty benefits.

    Foods To Reduce Or Avoid

    • Cow milk and cheese: the proteins in cows milk when digested can trigger breakouts and further aggravate acne. Replace these with oat or nut milks, vegan cheese, goat cheese, etc.
    • Iodine: Excessive amounts of seafood as well as table salt and garlic salt can increase iodine levels. Iodine is turned into iodide, which can irritate the skin and pores when excreted. Try sticking with freshwater finds like bass or catfish and replace your salt with sea salt.
    • Soy: soy contains phytoestrogen, a type of plant estrogen that can interfere with the bodys hormone receptors, and excessive amounts may lead to an increase in estrogen and possibly hormonal acne.

    Increased Risk Of Prostate Cancer

While most prenatal vitamins include only vitamins and essential minerals, some include omega supplements as well. Omega 3 is derived from flax oil and has been shown to increase the risk of prostate cancer in men. Omega 3 derived from fish oil, on the other hand, has been shown to inhibit prostate cancer, so it is important to determine what type of Omega 3 is in prenatal vitamins before taking them.

Heres Why Vitamin D Supplements Are Ineffective For Treating Painful Ibs

Vitamin D supplements are not an effective treatment for easing painful symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome , a new study from the University of Sheffield revealed.

The findings of the study appeared in the European Journal of Nutrition.

Scientists from the Universitys Department of Oncology and Metabolism in conjunction with a health supplement company, BetterYou carried out trials on participants who suffer from the chronic condition of the digestive system to assess whether vitamin D reduced the severity of their symptoms and whether it could improve their quality of life.

Results of the study found that despite an improvement in vitamin D status in the participants in response to a vitamin D3 oral spray supplementation over a 12-week trial, there was no difference to their IBS symptom severity over the same period, nor a reported change in the participants quality of life.

IBS is a common functional bowel disorder, characterised by chronically relapsing perturbed bowel habit. It causes symptoms such as stomach cramps, bloating, diarrhoea and constipation.

For some, symptoms will come and go, but for others, it can severely affect their quality of life, often causing embarrassment leading to many living with the condition undiagnosed, affecting both mental health and wellbeing.

Better Alternatives To Multivitamins The Best Supplements For Acne

Rather than taking a single multivitamin for healing acne, I recommend supplementing with specific, high-quality, bio-available forms of a handful of the most important acne-fighting nutrients.

But before we even get started on the topic of supplements, let me just say this:

Supplements do not make up for an unhealthy diet

Whenever possible, I recommend getting your nutrients through whole-food sources. As youll see here, most the of the supplements I recommend are derived from food. If youre eating a diet that triggers the root causes of acne, the supplements you take arent going to matter much in the long-run.

If youre looking for a good starting place when it comes to diet and acne, the GoodGlow Diet Blueprint is a great first step. It has everything you need to start eating an acne-free diet, all on one page.

As I discuss in my book Unmasking Acne, After you cleaned up your diet, there are a few supplements that most people can benefit from. Again, if youre eating a diverse range of foods, including organ meats and seafood, and not a whole lot of antinutrient-rich foods , you may not need these supplements. For the rest of us, they can be powerful tools for clear skin.

    Are Multivitamins Dangerous

Best Minerals and Vitamins for Acne Treatment

Anything that is one size fits all can be dangerous. Because multivitamins assume that we all need the same specific nutrients in the same specific ratios, you could personally be getting too much or too little.

Being consistently overloaded with vitamins and minerals can hurt you. Ingesting inappropriate doses becomes even more dangerous when you consume them every day. You could accumulate a buildup of vitamin C or zinc and experience nausea, diarrhea, or stomach cramps. You could get too much selenium and experience hair loss, GI issues, fatigue, or even mild nerve damage. Folic acid can also wreak havoc, especially if you already suffer from cancer, depression, anxiety, or other cognitive impairments. You can read more about that here.

Unfortunately, I still see many practitioners prescribing multivitamins based on faulty testing methods such as MTHFR, which will make a patient worse over time. Before I found my current doctors, my naturopath put me on a multivitamin as well as 5-HTP for depression and a B-vitamin complex. They all contained folic acid . Since I was already undermethylated with copper overload, these nutrients made me feel worse. I spent another two years suffering from massive depression and oxidative stress due to this inappropriate prescription.

    Hormones In Men And Women

Hormones will affect men and women differently. Many of the changes in skin are directly tied to the production of sebum, the skins natural oil. The sebaceous glands are highly sensitive to changes in sex hormone levels, specifically testosterone. Increased testosterone often leads to the overproduction of sebum. During puberty, testosterone levels rise in both females and males. As men get older, testosterone levels even out. For women, testosterone levels increase right before the menstrual cycle. Changes in testosterone levels and increased production of sebum are the leading causes of acne.

What Do I Really Need In A Prenatal Vitamin

Sifting through drugstore shelves or Amazon suggestions is super intimidating. And don’t worry, it’s not just youall of those options don’t just start to sound alike, they really are very similar, says Wendy Goodall McDonald, MD, a Chicago-based ob-gyn.

These are the recommended daily amounts of essential nutrients you should be getting when you’re pregnant, and what a basic prenatal should have:

    • Folic acid: 400 milligrams
    • Vitamin D: 600 international units
    • Calcium: 1,000 milligrams
    • Iron: 27 milligrams
    • Omega-3 fatty acids: 200 milligrams

Other vitamins you should look for in your prenatals:

    • Vitamin A
    • Vitamin C
    • Vitamin B6
    • Vitamin B12

One thing to note: Getting enough vitamin D is especially important for BIPOC women, as they’re more prone to having a deficiency, says Lucky Sekhon, MD, an ob-gyn, infertility specialist, and reproductive endocrinologist at Reproductive Medicine Associates of New York.

Vitamin D is important for bone health and a healthy pregnancy, and not getting enough has been linked to conditions like preeclampsia and preterm delivery. “Vitamin D is derived from sun exposure and skin absorption, which is limited in melanin-pigmented skin,” says Dr. Sekhon. “The average prenatal vitamin contains 400 IU of vitamin D. A woman whose levels are known to be deficient will require more than this daily amount to replenish it.” If you do need more vitamin D, there are ways to get it from your diet .
